Best Start For Spring Garden
Relies On Preparation & Patience
By Jeneen Wiche
B y the time March rolls
around gardeners are anxious to
get their hands dirty,
unfortunately this also means
we may be getting our feet wet,
literally. Every year I am
optimistic that the season will be a perfect one. Dry
weekends in the spring when we need to get the
garden prepared; average rainfall once everything is
planted; and perfect summer time temperatures with
just enough rainfall so that the tomatoes keep
blooming and I don't have to haul water. Every now
and then we do have these perfect seasons, but I never
bet the farm on it!
I remain optimistic about the perfect growing season
because we are planning our biggest vegetable garden
yet. I am equipped with canning pots and
paraphernalia, I now have a vacuum sealer for
freezing food, and a new book on how to preserve
foods using methods nearly lost to current generations.
I am ready to grow some food and preserve it beyond
the bounty of the summer months.
Our garden is a large one but we have designed it to
be manageable. An eight-foot deer-proof fence
encloses a collection of beds and rows that when taken
singly are easy to prepare, plant and cultivate. Loads
of well-composted horse manure are hand worked into
the beds each spring; during the winter pine needles or
leaf mold continue to enrich the soil and control
weeds. Wood chips cover paths and future planting
beds that have yet to be tapped. Our goal in doing this
is to improve and maintain soil structure. Healthy soil
does in fact mean healthy plants.
Soil structure is probably the most important thing
to consider if you want a healthy garden. There are
organisms in the soil that work symbiotically with
plants and help them flourish. Healthy soil is alive
with good bacteria, fungi, nematods, earthworms and
more. Bacteria and fungi found in the soil help break
down organic matter; what they do not consume is left
behind as a slow steady source of nutrients for our
plants.

Your Green Acres
From Hobby Horse To Champion
Jim & Brenda Strause
turn pastime into
business
By Raylene Blair
I
n the past you seldom heard of
city folk turning into country folk.
But now, you hear of more and
more people moving out of the city
to grab a little piece of land to call
their own. Such is the case for Jim
and Brenda Strause.
The Strauses’ of Crestwood,
Kentucky live on 10 acres. They
started out with two horses and now
have seven. Six of them are
American Saddlebreds and Fred,
who is a Tennessee Walking horse.
Fred is a recently ‘rescued’ horse.
He is an older horse whose owner
was going through a divorce and
could not take care of him anymore.
Although they are not sure how old
he is, Jim and Brenda stepped
forward and gave him a new home.
He is now living out whatever time
he may have left in the comforts of
a warm barn and a caring family.
How did the Strauses’ get
involved with horses?
It all began for Brenda when she
and her four sisters were growing up
in St. Matthews. At that time her
family could not afford a horse of
their own but they were encouraged
to take saddle seat riding lessons on
an American Saddlebred. This
developed into a passion for Brenda
that she brought into her marriage.
Jim, who grew up in Lyndon was
not accustomed to being around
horses but after he and Brenda
married, he was quickly
indoctrinated. As the Strauses’
moved to different locations
throughout the states with Jim’s
work, Brenda always owned a
horse. So Jim grew to love the fourhoofed friends and adopted
Brenda’s hobby. Fast-forward about
10 years, Jim and Brenda move to
Kentucky and purchase 10 acres.
What better use than to fill that land
with American Saddlebred horses.
The Strauses’ have now turned
the hobby into a business where
they raise, breed and show their
horses. Brenda takes care of the
horses throughout the week, while
Jim works as a Sales Manager. He
takes the weekend shift caring for
the horses. A typical day for
Brenda involves cleaning the stalls
and feeding the horses twice a day.
The chore of cleaning the stalls has
been made a little less back
breaking with the purchase of a
Kubota tractor with a front loader
and a manure spreader. It used to
Say You Saw It In Green Acres
be that the manure was put into
wheelbarrows and put into a pile.
Once the pile got large enough, they
would run an advertisement and
give the manure away to whoever
Fred and Micayla
would come and get it to spread on
their garden. Now the manure is
loaded up onto the manure spreader
and spread over the fields, no more
piles and no more wheelbarrows.
The manure is natural fertilizer that
keeps the fields growing for the
horses to graze and makes cleaning
the stalls, at least, a little easier.
Owning horses is not an
inexpensive “hobby” or business.
Horses have the usual vet bills,

Spring Garden -
continued from page 12
Earthworms gently aerate the soil and beneficial
organisms eat the less desirable. The white thread-like
bodies of mycorrhizal fungi just beneath the soil
surface help to fix nitrogen in exchange for
carbohydrates collected from root nodes; in exchange
they scavenge absorbable phosphate making it
available to our plants so we don't have to.
Our gardeing philosophies should be focused on
maintaining this healthy relationship between soil and
plant. If we continue to batter the soil with too
frequent and deep cultivation we disrupt the healthy
balance there in. We destroy this balance when we
regularly cultivate with roto-tillers, and when we use
synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Mechanical
cultivation once a year is okay but a regular sweep
between the rows does more harm than good, mulch
your rows with wood chips or other organic matter
instead.
This spring wait for your soil to warm up and dry
out, too. Working wet soil is like over kneading bread.
. .it won't rise. If we work wet soil we compact the
individual particles reducing the amount of oxygen
and its ability to drain well. Oxygen must be available
to roots so that they can then take in moisture and
nutrients.
Poor drainage means excessively wet soils; during a
typical spring this scenario will deprive roots of
oxygen resulting
in poor root development. Poor root development
means stunted plant growth which puts the plant at a
disadvantage when spring turns to a hot, dry summer.
Setting out seed or seedling when the soil is too cold,
or too hot will have lasting consequences, as well.
Sowing Bibb lettuce in the summer doesn't work
(believe me, I've tried) because the seed will not
germinate in the heat. Many of our traditional summer
crops like cucumbers, squash and eggplant will not
germinate in March when your spinach, onions and
potatoes are ready to go. Each plant has an optimum
soil temperature for germination and growth so pay
attention to the seed packets and believe what they
say. There are subtle but serious physiological
processes going on in relation to plant health and
growing conditions. Take, for example, the tomato.
They do not like their soil to be cold or soggy and
cool nights can wreck havoc on the circadian rhythm.
The circadian rhythm of a tomato is thrown off
when temperatures drop into the 50's at night. This
temperature drop triggers a delay in the plant's 24hour cycle. So what, you ask? Well, this is what
happens: photosynthesis, which happens during the
day, and nighttime activities like processing sugar
from starch start later in the cycle than they should. If
the photosynthetic metabolism is delayed until early
afternoon then the plant loses several hours of
collecting energy and it soon languishes. . .so if you
set your tomatoes out too early you may put them at a
disadvantage by throwing off their circadian clock.
