Mosaic 2 – Week 5 – Day 1 – SOTW version
 Daily Checklist
 Read Chapter 11 in The Story of the World, "Kingdom of the Franks".
 Map Work: Use your globe to follow along with the instructions as you read through
the beginning of this chapter in Story of the World, as well.
 Read the next two sections of How to Be a Samurai Warrior, pages 18-21, "Could You
Survive on Campaign?" and "Will You Live in a Castle?"
 Begin memorizing "The Swing" on page 105 of A Family of Poems. Read through the
poem a few times, and then have your child recite with you as you read.
Mosaic 2 – Week 5 – Day 2 – SOTW version
 Daily Checklist
 Read Chapter 13 in The Story of the World, "The Great Kings of France".
 Knowledge Quest maps, page 16 - "The Empire of Charlemagne": Have the child point
to and identify familiar landmarks on the map. You could suggest Rome, Greece, the
Mediterranean Sea, etc. Then have the child color in the boundaries of
Charlemagne's empire.
 Read the next two sections of How to Be a Samurai Warrior, pages 22-25, "Will You Be
Part of a Siege?" and "Would You Visit a Town?"
 Continue memorizing "The Swing" on page 105 of A Family of Poems. Read through
the poem a few times, and then have your child repeat after you, as you read.
Mosaic 2 – Week 5 – Day 3 – SOTW version
 Daily Checklist
 Read pp 216-217 in The Usborne Encyclopedia of World History, "Charlemagne's
Empire" and “The Holy Roman Empire”.
 Knowledge Quest maps, Pg 18: The Holy Roman Empire 950-1300 – Compare this map
to yesterday's map, and show that the Holy Rooman Empire was formed from
remnants of the Eastern kingdom of Charlemagne's territory. Point out that much of
this land is today called Germany. Have the child locate and label Rome, and color
in the boundaries of the Holy Roman Empire.
 Timeline figures: “Charlemagne 771-841”, “Otto I of Germany 936-973”, “The new
Holy Roman Empire 962-1806”
 Read the final three sections of How to Be a Samurai Warrior, pages 36-40, "Do You
Want the Top Job" and "What Does the Future Hold" and “Your Interview”.
 Continue memorizing "The Swing" on page 105 of A Family of Poems. Read through
the poem a few times, and then have your child repeat after you, as you read.

 Daily Checklist
 Read Chapter 14 in The Story of the World, "The Arrival of the Norsemen".
 Knowledge Quest maps, Pg 14, Viking Expansion 750-1000 – Begin by having the child
identify familiar landmarks such as Rome and the Mediterranean Sea on the map.
Then follow along with your reading in SOTW.
 Read pp 12-25 in D'Aulaire's Norse Myths “The First Gods and Giants” and “The
Creation of the World”.
 Continue memorizing "The Swing" on page 105 of A Family of Poems. Read through
the poem a few times, and then have your child repeat after you, as you read.

 Daily Checklist
 Read pp 210-211 in The Usborne Encyclopedia of World History, "Vikings at Home".
 Read pp 26-35 in D'Aulaire's Norse Myths, “The Creation of Man” and “Yggdrasil, the
World Tree” pp 31-35
 Finish memorizing "The Swing" on page 105 of A Family of Poems. Have the child
practice a few times, and then perhaps recite the poem for a friend or family
member.
