WEEKEND OF APRIL 30 - MAY 1
KENSETH WINS THE ASAMT 3RD ANNUAL "JOE SHEAR
CLASSIC" AT MADISON INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY
ASAMT PR (Kari Shear-Carlson)

May 1, 2011 - 17 year-old, Ross Kenseth won the
3rd Annual "Joe Shear Classic" at Madison
International Speedway this afternoon. This event
was the American Speed Association® Kwik Trip
Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power
Equipment and GrandStay Hospitality season
opener.
Twenty-eight cars started the 136-lap event. Bryan
Reffner of Wisconsin Rapids, WI was the fast
qualifier. However, with the inversion, Kenseth
started on the pole. He did not remain there for the
entire event however. Another young driver,
Michael Bilderback was able to take over the top
spot and remained there for much of the remaining
first segment. Kenseth took the lead back prior to
the lap 100 break.
Last year's winner and 2010 ASAMT Champion,
Steve Carlson did not start out his season as well
as the last. Carlson was involved in the first
caution of the afternoon, sending him to the pit
area for repairs. He did return and continued, but
was struggling from that point forward and
eventually pulled off, finishing 92 of the 136 laps.
The first thirteen laps of the event carried with
them, five caution flags. A lot of great cars were
involved, including; Tim Schendel, Carlson, Kyle
Calmes, and Chris Weinkauf. Most were able to
return and Schendel pulled out an eighth place
finish, missing his hood and all.
The ASA Midwest Touring Stars had a great
showing this afternoon. At one point in the race,
fourteen out of the top seventeen were all Touring
Stars. The top eight finishers were all ASA Midwest
Touring Stars.
The "Joe Shear Classic" is a unique event as it has
a break after 100 laps and a 36 lap shootout for
the victory. During the ten-minute break, teams can
make minor adjustments on their cars. Cars line-up
as they completed the first segment.
Ross maintained his lead while the #2 of Michael
Bilderback and the #39 of Andrew Morrissey fought
for second. The final laps of the event saw a lot of
great battles. Griffin McGrath and Nick Murgic
battled for fifth as Wimmer followed. Nathan
Haseleu was waiting patiently for things to shake
out.
Michael Bilderback finished second followed by
Andrew Morrissey, Jacob Goede and Nathan
Haseleu who had a tire going down on the last lap.
The ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour also opened
its season at MIS. Bobby Wilberg took home the
victory after a dominating performance. He was
followed by John Wood and Scott Hansen.
Chris Marek won the ASA Midwest Sunoco
Sportsman Tour event. Eric Melby and Scott Null
rounded out the top three.
The next event for all three divisions of the ASA
Midwest Tour is in two weeks at Wisconsin
International Raceway in Kaukauna, WI on
Sunday, May 15th.

GOUGH BREAKS THROUGH FOR EAST
BAY WIN
By: Jack Fordyce
April 30, 2011 –A familiar face in Victory Lane joined
those who have already scored their early season wins in
East Bay Raceway Park action. Former champion
Forrest Gough claimed the Q Auto & Injury Attorney
main for his first triumph of 2011.
With a different paint scheme (blue versus the traditional
white), but familiar sponsors, Gough powered ahead of
the field early on. It proved to be beneficial when a lap
six accident wiped out the cars from second through
eighth behind the leader. Prior to that, challenger Daniel
Woody rode the turn one wall for 80 feet while running
second. As the race neared the end, a great battle
between J.R. Prather Jr. and Ricky Land for second was
exciting. Prather ended up with the spot and Land, who
had come from the tail, would settle for third. Jason
Pope claimed fourth with Tim Gay rounding out the top
five. Heat winners were Pope and Woody.
Austin Sanders captured his fourth win of the 2011
season in the pursuit of defense of his championship in
the Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel Modified class.
Sanders grabbed the lead from Kevin Bryant, who would
find himself dealing with Buzzie Reutimann for position.
Reutimann was able to slip by, only to have the spot
taken away by a caution. He made it stick a few laps
later and resumed his pursuit of Sanders. No one could
catch the eventual winner, who added to his current point
lead. Reutimann was followed by Roger Crouse, Bryant
and Thomas Pratt. Reutimann and Pratt scored heat
wins.
Roberto Morfin Jr. added his name to the short list of
Outlaw 4 winners. He jumped out front and had to deal
with the challenges from Raymond Rogers Jr. in his first
start of the season. The race was full of drivers moving
forward for best finishes of the season. Chad Rose, also
in his first start, came from the rear of the field after
repairing the car that did not run the heat, claiming third.
Eric Knight posted a career-best fourth and Kyle Worden
rounded out the top five. Morfin Jr. and Chris
Zimmerman were heat winners.
Jim Baker led the early stages of the Street Stock feature
until Jeff Rodgers came calling on lap 10. Rodgers
hustled to his third feature of the year. Baker’s second
place finish was his best of the season. Donnie Reed held
off Curtis Book for third. Roy Woodhouse collected
fifth. Rodgers and Reed started their nights with heat
victories.
A field of 24 motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers started
off on a 15-lap adventure with Patrick Fiore the early
race leader. Fiore appeared on his way for his second
feature win until the car lost its muffler on lap 12, an
automatic DQ. The incident gave the lead to Johnnie
Alexander, who made the best of the situation, claiming
his second win. Bubba Puyear had his best finish of the
year with a second. Point leader Thomas Burnside
helped his cause by finishing third, ahead of Gene Gross
and Mathew Odell. Mark Pickelsimer was the B feature
winner. Roberto Morfin Sr., Fiore and Alexander were
best of class in the heats.
ASA sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway
Park on Saturday, May 7, 2011. The program will
include Late Models, east Bay Sprints, Street Stocks,
motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers, Dirt Daubers and
Fan Participation. motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers.

POST-RACE EVENTS TRANSPIRE TO
MAKE HEATH HORNET 100 CHAMP
By: Jon Brown

Hull didn’t keep the lead long as Josh Parkkila went to the front at
the race’s midway point only to lose the lead when he slammed into
a water barrel in Turn 2 trying to avoid the spinning lapped car
driven by Charlie Atkinson.
Tuttle eventually found himself back out in front and survived two
more restarts – including a three-wide run to the green flag with
Jonathan Hull and heath -- until Heath completed a seven-lap charge
from fourth to first with a pass with 12 laps left.
The Street Stocks return next week for the College of Western Idaho
Professional Truck Driving 50, which caps a Saturday night of
racing that also will include a double feature for the ESI Express
ASA Modifieds as the drivers pursue points in the Joe Gibbs Driven
Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship.
Also on the card are the Pepsi Sprintcars, the Edmark Mini Stocks
and the season opener for the Jr. Stingers.
Children who attend the races will be able to take part in the Penny
Gold Rush for Kids.
MERIDIAN, Idaho — The Animal showed his softer side Saturday
night at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.
A fan favorite, Art “The Animal” Heath gave half of his $1,000
winnings to Middleton, Idaho’s Rick Baldwin, the man whose car
was destroyed when Heath’s Ford Escort plowed into it in a last-lap
wreck in the Tates Rents Hornet 100.
The Nampa, Idaho driver’s journey from leading with a half-lap left
to being wrecked to being declared the winner was something that
can only happen in the wild and wacky Hornet division. He never
crossed the finish line, but got the win after the top five race car
owners refused to give up their machines when speedway officials
invoked a $500 claim rule.
In other main events, Melissa Weaver of Nampa, the defending
champion in the College of Western Idaho Professional Truck
Driving Street Stocks division, opened the season with an easy
victory; and IP Freely Too, driven by Nick Forsea of Richland, Ore.,
captured the paint-to-pass debut of the Thunder Dogs.
Heath, who late last season surrendered a winning car on a similar
claimer, went from sixth to first after the race when the top five
drivers as declared after a post-race review were all stripped of the
race win, one-by-one, as they refused the car claim.
The 2011 series leader who is 2-for-2 in main events now, Heath
had been put in sixth place when post-race penalties were handed
out following a wild final lap. Heath was in front on the backstretch
when Kuna, Idaho’s Donovan Parker spun him out while racing for
the lead.
After a post-race review, officials initially gave the win to Caldwell,
Idaho’s Brandon Johnson – a racer who always seems to find
himself in the middle of the excitement. But Johnson’s car owner
refused the claim, triggering the chain reaction that sent Heath back
to the top. Not bad for a guy whose car came to rest in Turn 3 after
colliding with Baldwin’s No. 8 racer.
Heath had led earlier in the race but lost his advantage to Hornet
rookie Jonathan Hull when he lost traction in a Turn 2 that was
soaked by ruptured water barrels from a previous crash.
Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7.50 for senior citizens and
military personnel with ID and $6 for children ages 7-11. Children 6
and younger always get through the gate free.
A family of two adults and up to four children can enjoy a night of
racing for $30.
Fans also can buy tickets online at www.meridianspeedway.com,
print them off at home and avoid the long lines on race night.

BRAD ROGERS WINS USAR DEBUT AT
DILLON MOTOR SPEEDWAY
by: Hunter Thomas
DILLON, SC, MAY 3RD, 2011: It was a
historical night at ASA-sanctioned, Dillon
Motor Speedway this past weekend as the
USAR Pro Cup Series made their inaugural
appearance.
The USAC Midgets, Late Models and the
brand new Mini Cup Stocks raced as well. It
was an epic night as every race had the fans on
their feet. All three races had breathtaking
finishes and surprise winners.
Everyone was highly anticipating the USAR
Pro Cup Series race. It was the first time that
the Speedway has ever seen live pit stops. The
pole sitter, Caleb Holman led the first 42 laps
until he was caught up in a crash with Mike
Williams and JP Morgan. Holman was forced
to make a pit stop and series veteran, Jeff
Agnew inherited the lead. On lap 53, Agnew
had to retire in the garage, and that opened the
door for AJ Franks to take over the lead. By
about lap 75, Tyler Young and Brad Rogers
were making their way through the field and
into the top five.
Brad Rogers claimed the lead on lap 134, and
never looked back. Rogers led the
remaining 116 laps in route to a victory. Caleb
Holman recovered from an early race incident
to bring the car home in second, and Blake
Jones captured his career best finish as he
crossed the line in the third position. Tyler
Young finished fourth, and AJ Franks rounded
out the top five.
Up next was the brand new Mini Cup Stock
division. Chris Conner led the first seven laps
until Larry Boyle took over the lead. On lap
18, the action was kicked up a notch whenever
the leaders bump drafted down the backstretch
and came out of turn four three-wide. A series
Larry Boyle held on for the win while Carl
Britt finished second. Chris Conner rebounded
from a late race crash to finish third. Bill Willis
finished fourth, and Steve Chauncey rounded
out the top five.
The USAC Midgets kicked off the main event
in style as the open-wheeled cars were three
deep coming around to complete the first lap.
Jarett Andretti led well over half of the main
event. The only two cautions came out when
Nick Drake and Chris Lamb got together on
two separate occasions. Drake rebounded from
the accidents to capture the checkered flag in
front of the packed house.
Jarett Andretti had to settle for second as he
just barely lost the race. Scott Hunter finished
third after wrecking in a heat race, and Eric
Cooms finished fourth. Steven Intravaia
finished fifth.
The last race of the night was the Late Model
feature. Ben Stanton led the majority of the
race with Jon Lane literally pushing him
through the turns. A series of cautions came on
lap 42 when Archie Adams Jr’s motor blew.
On the restart, Archie Adams Sr.’s throttle
stuck, forcing him to back the car into the wall.
Adams Sr. walked away under his own power.
It was still the Ben Stanton and Jon Lane show
in the closing laps. Every time Stanton went
into a corner, Lane would jack his back wheels
off the ground. Stanton was able to hold on for
the win with Lane literally pushing him across
the finish line. Ryan Hall rounded out the top
three and Jason Clark finished fourth. Chad
Webster finished fifth after having mechanical
issues during practice.
"I think we would got to him, but we would
have had to pass him," Hoffman said.
As it was, a yellow flag for three-car wreck in
Turn 4 on lap 14 set up a double-file restart.
Brown chose the bottom groove. Hoffman
wasted no time passing on the outside when
the green flag flew, but then Brown fought
back.

Schererville, Ind. (April 30) - Eddie Hoffman
didn't have much of a front end left after a
particularly rough 30-lap late-model feature
Friday night at Grundy County Speedway.
Saturday, in a different car, he finished at the
front end of the field in the main event before
an Opening Night crowd at the half-mile ASAsanctioned Illiana Speedway.
It's nice to have more than one toy to play
with.
"Yeah," the Wheaton native said afterward
with a smile. "It helps you race a little bit
knowing that you have a couple of different
cars for different situations."
Hoffman took the lead from Blake Brown on
lap 15, held off a stern challenge by Brown
shortly thereafter, and wound up prevailing by
two car-lengths.
Saturday's opener drew 19 late-models. Brown
dominated early, taking the lead from Phil
Splant on lap 2 and opening up a substantial
gap between himself and the rest of the field.
By the time Hoffman took second away from
Splant on lap 8, he was chasing about 12 carlengths.
Had the race gone green to lap 30, catching
Brown might have been a tough order.
"The double-file restart made the passing
situation all different," Hoffman said. "But the
thing was, the longer we ran the better we got.
As you saw on the restart he was able to stay
with us."
Indeed, Brown got underneath Hoffman after
the initial pass, and the duo ran side-by-side on
laps 19 and 20. Hoffman eventually put a
couple of car-lengths between them and held
steady to the finish.
"I didn't know if we'd have anything for Eddie,
but our car was real good at the end there,"
Brown said. "I was able to stay with him for a
couple of laps. Hopefully we'll get him next
time."
Anthony Danta never challenged the leaders,
but worked his way steadily through the field
to post a strong third. Splant was fourth, and
Dean Patterson fifth.
John Nutley, who on lap five was involved in a
two-car crash in Turn 2 that ended D.J.
Weltmeyer's night, was able to return to the
race and finish sixth.
The 20-lap Legends feature saw 2009 track
champion Alex Arelano display quite a bit of
emotion after capturing Opening Night honors.
"My gosh, you have no idea how I wanted this
one so bad," Arelano said. "I can't believe it. A
huge weight has been lifted off of my
shoulders.
"Last year was really hard, but we did our best.
I fought through a lot of personal things. I did
my best to overcome everything. I'm so happy
now."
Arelano ran behind Craig Mahoney for several
laps before making what would be the winning
pass on lap 16. Mahoney held on for second
ahead of Matt O'Leary, Ryan Moore, Jimmy
Uteg III and Casey Martin.
It was smooth sailing in the 25-lap Turbo Stox
feature for Billy Jarrells, who grabbed the top
spot from Jim Gilbert on lap 8 and was
basically unchallenged.
"The car stuck, no slips," Jarrells said. "It was
great out of the box."
A good battle for second raged among several
drivers, however. Eddie Wolf emerged as the
winner there, ahead of fast qualifier Chris
Woodall, defending track champion Bill
Serviss, former track titlist Craig Amptmeyer,
and Cheryl Hryn.
The Pure Stocks main saw Chris Czaszwicz
face a stern challenge near the finish from
defending track champion Helen Nester, but he
held on by one car-length. Rich Dearborn was
third, followed by Neal Kerner, Jason
Moorehead and Brad Bush.

ST. MARY WINS SUPER STREET
SEASON OPENER AT YAKIMA
April 30, 2011 (Yakima Speedway, ASA Member Track,
Yakima WA) - Yakima Speedway hosted Saturday night at the
races. The Event included the H & H Furniture Pure Stocks,
EZ Credit Auto Sales & CWI Security Hornets and the Mel’s
Diner Bump To Pass and Ben St. Mary won the 2011 season
opener in the Tire Center Super Street Stock Series.
The night’s events got kicked off with the CWI Security & EZ
Credit Auto Sales Hornets. Julie Melville started on the pole
and led the first few laps until Joshua Henne passed for the
lead on lap 3. But he would not maintain the lead for long as
fast time qualifier and A Trophy dash winner Josh Washington
passed for the lead. Josh started to pull away from the rest of
the pack but a caution came out on lap 10 when the car of
Julie Melville lost power. On the restart Josh Washington and
Jesse Eaton battled for the lead but Jesse was not able to get
around the fast car of Josh Washington who went on to make
it two in a row winning his second main event in 2011
followed by Jesse Eaton, Joshua Henne, Michael Beck, Julie
Melville and Jeff Ball.
The H & H Furniture Pure Stocks made their second
appearance of the year. Tim Sutton and Daniel Coble started
in the pole positions. Daniel Coble took the early lead but Rob
Allen was able to drive under a pack of cars going three wide
into turn three and come out the leader. On Lap 2 Greg
Gargett hit Chris Marang, spinning his car into Joe Estep and
both cars went off the track bringing out the first caution of
the race. Greg Gargett was shown the black flag, came into pit
lane to serve his penalty and was sent to the back of the pack
where he restarted the race.
The next caution came out on the restart when Daniel Coble
spun out in turn two and went to the back of the pack. Rob
Allen was able to keep the lead until lap 13 when the fast car
of Greg Gargett made the pass after racing from the back of
the pack and became the new race leader.
On Lap 16 Cody Denton spun out in turn two bringing out the
third yellow flag of the race and the fourth caution came out
on lap 22 when Tim Breshears spun out collecting Daniel
Coble. Rob Allen who was running in second position blew
his motor with 5 laps to go and another caution flag came out
for track clean up. The field was reset for a 4 lap shootout.
Greg Gargett was not challenged again and went on to take
the checkered flag followed by Chris Marang, and Cody
Denton.
The Tire Center Super Street Stocks put on an impressive
show with Jack Mondor on the pole leading the field down to
take the green flag for the 40 lap main event. The cars were
racing side by side double file when race leader Jack Mondor
broke the rear end on his race car going into turn two on
bringing out a red flag for track clean up.
On the restart Tony Huffines took the lead followed by Ben
St. Mary and new track record holder Chuck Roberts. The
cars went on for the next 18 laps racing nose to tail each
waiting for the other to make a mistake. On lap 20 Ben St.
Mary was trying to pass Tony Huffines for the lead, but ran
out of race room and spun him out. He would receive the
black flag and go to the back of the pack and the incident
moved Chuck Roberts into the lead. On lap 25 pay back was
the name of the game when Tony Huffines spun Ben St. Mary
out. It was then Tony Huffines turn to receive the black flag
and go to the back of the field. The race got underway again
and Ben St. Mary started to pull away from the rest of the
field, led the last 15 laps and won the Tire Center Super Street
Stock Main event followed by Chuck Roberts and Tony
Huffines.
The wild and crazy Mel’s Diner Bump To Pass race was the
final main event of the evening. Dennis Clouse and Mark
Parmentier led the field down to take the green flag but the
race would soon be yellow flagged for a pile up on the back
stretch. The field was reset for a complete restart allowing
Ben Briggs to go into the pits to fix flat tire. He was able to
rejoin the field in the back of the pack. On the restart Wes
Heigh pulled out to take the lead followed by veteran racer
and last week’s winner Joe Stevens and Donnie Stevens who
had quickly raced his way into the third position. By lap six
Joe Stevens was the new race leader while the rest of the pack
piled into each other in turn two bringing out the yellow flag.
On the restart Joe Stevens led the field down to take the green
flag, Josh Parmentier was in second and Wes Heigh third
place. Joe Stevens went on to claim his second victory of the
season.
Yakima Speedway will host the next Saturday Night at the

Models, Northwest Pro 4 Truck Series, H & H Furniture Pure
Stocks, CWI Security & EZ Credit Auto Sales Hornets and

4/30/11 The fans certainly were treated to a thrill show
as the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series
finally got their 2011 campaign started as Mike
Kertscher somehow managed to squeeze between the
wall and leader Scotty Neitzel as the two drag raced to
the checker, and with contact and all Kertscher edged
Neitzel by maybe two feet at the line. The contact forced
Neitzel to spin wildly just past the lane forcing a yellow
checkered for the remainder of the field. Mike Reinke
charged from 17th to claim third. Kertscher piloted the
Capt'n Jim's Yacht Sales Kistler powered J&J to the IRA
season opening victory at Beaver Dam Raceway.
