The Topeka Newsletter wil be celebrating its 10 year anniverary this year! I am
excited to be working with Umbrella Creative to enhance your experience! Stay
tuned for more hints as I begin to build something really cool to help our Home
Grown and locally owned businesses!
Kim's Excellent Adventures
New Year’s Day Dillards Sale: I am not a shopper! This year, I was in Kansas City for New Years Eve so in the morning, Frankie and I headed out to Dillards
to take advantage of their 50% off clearance sale. It wasn’t all that bad. I found a quilt bed spread for one of my bedrooms! We also did more shopping and
found some other great deals! Then we went to see Daddy’s Home at Fork N Screens! It was a pretty funny movie!
Kim’s Hair: I have never waited this long to get a perm. My hair was horrible. After 3 hours, I got
my curl back!! Thanks Kristy Kuenzi for giving my hair some hope!!
Substitute teaching: Well sense I don’t work at Kansas Trucking anymore, I am able to teach again! I know once my new website is built, my time will be
limited but until then, I get to teach! I have missed the kids!
Mudane Mondays: Ryan and I still go every Monday to have a beer and talk about our week! We have been doing this now for 2 years! Which seems amazing
but I really do enjoy our Mondays. We have made some really good friends with wait staff all over Topeka. I think we entertain them sometimes!!
Krazy Karaoke at Pig Skins: This is my neighborhood bar! I always have a great time with awesome people there!! Druex Doty is the DJ for
karaoke and this month was his birthday! If you ever want to do something fun on a Friday night, stop by Pigskins and enjoy some fun karaoke!
PJ Party: After our 30th class reunion a few of us girls decided to try to get together a few times a year. I took the first step and planned a PJ Party at my
house! It might sound crazy but you are never too old to hang out with friends! It wasn’t a wild and crazy night but it was so much fun hanging out with the
same girls I use to 36 years ago! We already planned out next adventure!!

Day with Kolton: These are always one of my favorite days! This month we started out eating breakfast at Hanover Pancake House! Then we
came home to watch the movie I got for my birthday from Chelsea, Aladdin! Then we went shopping at Walmart where he somehow swindled me
into getting him 7 cars instead of 3. Next time, I will need to be clearer when I say you can pick 3. A pack of 5 cars was his number 3 pick. Then
back to the house to play with his new cars and eat lunch!

Chief. Curtis was born January 25, 1860 to Captain and Mrs. Oren Curtis.
His mother was of Native American ancestry and when she died, when
Charles was three years of age, Charles was raised by his mother's
people on the Kaw Indian Reservation.

The rich beauty and history of the Flint Hills
through the art form of Barn Quilts
On display in the Fink Exhibit Gallery
January 29 - April 30
Welcome to the Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail!
Driving through the countryside anywhere in the world you will likely
come across many barns. They drape the country in a multitude of
designs, colors and architecture. Some barns are painted to display
advertisements. However, a woman named Donna Sue Groves, from
Adams County, Ohio wanted to honor her mother by hanging a
colorful painted quilt block on her barn. Instead of just one quilt
block, she began a community project with twenty quilt blocks being
displayed along a driving trail to encourage visitors to travel through
the countryside. This was the start of the first quilt trail in America.
Quilt trails are organized all across the country. Quilt blocks are
displayed on barns around the countryside and mapped out for
tourists to follow these amazing works of art.
Join us on a scenic journey through the Flint Hills countryside to
celebrate the piecing together of beautiful quilt patterns, agricultural
heritage, agricultural history and culture, and promoting agritourism
and rural pride.
In celebration of Kansas Day, on January 29, all guests will receive free
admission to the museum to view the exhibit!

Kansas Museum of History - Special exhibit What's Cooking, Uncle Sam?
Food. We love it, fear it, and obsess about it.
We demand that our Government ensure that it is safe, cheap, and
abundant. In response, Government has been a factor in the production,
regulation, research, innovation, and economics of our food supply. It has
also attempted, with varying success, to change the eating habits of
Americans.

First Friday Art Walk
We will be featuring the thought provoking artwork by artist Ptr Sponseller
who uses reclaimed items to make stunning sculptures. The show title refers
to not only Ptr's use of matertials but also a tongue-in-cheek proclamation
after several of his works were recently deemed worthy of theft.
Artist often face many uphill battles in their quest to express something to
and for the world. Ptr is no exception. Not down or out, he will continue to
put his unique vision into the world. Come out and visit with Ptr and see for
yourself!!
Artist Statement:
My childhood was not filled with wealth or stability. As far back as I can
remember, my parents were junkers, AKA pickers. As a teenager, unfortunate
circumstances lead me to become a gutter punk. In other words, I lived on
the streets of Charleston, South Carolina. My "home" was under bridges or
squatting in abandoned warehouses. One positive to this lifestyle, is that I
learned to utilize everything, because I had nothing.
At the age of 20, I left Charleston, South Carolina, with nothing but a
backpack and my dog. Together we walked and hitchhiked from the east
coast to the west coast. Eventually I ended up in Portland, Oregon. Portland is
where I met my wife, and for awhile, we sat down our roots. Then my life
took another fork in the road, and we decided to move to my wife's family
farm in Berryton, Kansas.
The farm's tree lines are still filled with scrap metal and tractor parts.
Originally I obtained my materials for my art projects from the scrap metal
and bones that I found on the farm during walks with my family.
I have always considered myself to be artistic, and have worked in multiple
mediums. During the past few years, I have become inspired by reclaiming
materials, or up cycling. I see a type of beauty in decay. From decay there is
birth. Whether the decay is urban, industrial or organic, I see potential. What
others call trash, I see as pieces to a new puzzle. I see their potential to
become part of something new, to begin again.
That is why I take scrap metal and bones, or whatever I may find, and I give it
a new life, a new purpose. It becomes...reclaimed.

Henry A. Perkins, a mild mannered C.P.A., picks up the wrong briefcase one full of money. He assumes it is illicit cash and keeps it. Knowing
the owner of the briefcase must have his, he rushes home and tells his
wife to pack - they’re going to Bali! (In fact, they can buy Bali.) When
the police ring his doorbell, he freaks, only to find out they have
confused him with a dead man, accused him of soliciting in the men’s
room and more. Henry’s inept attempts to remove himself from the
impossible situation leads to increasingly hysterical situations.

journey. Winner of four Tony Awards including an original score with
music by Bon Jovi founding member David Bryan.

story by Edith Nesbit, this is a story of bravery, intelligence and
friendship.

Urinetown.. The Musical
Feb 11-Feb 14
A side-splitting send-up of greed, love, revolution (and musicals!), in a time
when water is worth its weight in gold.
Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critic's Circle Awards, two Lucille
Lortel Awards, and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is....Hilariously funny and
touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective of one of
America's greatest art forms.
In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought,
has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must
use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits
by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the
people, a hero decides he's had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them
all to freedom!
....Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be,

Rodgers' and Hammerstein's beloved classic, their first collaboration, comes
to life on the WRHS stage!
A charming cowboy, Curly, attempts to woo Laurey, but she's playing hard to
get, and might regret her choices very soon. Ado Annie can't make up her
mind between two of her own suitors, and her father insists on having his
say.
Set at the turn of the century in iconic Oklahoma Indian Territory, this
production remains a favorite because of its classic romances, unforgettable
characters, sing-along music, and portrayal of indomitable western settlers
who worked to carve their lives into a vast, unyielding, beautiful land.

Beethoven — Symphony No. 6 — Pastoral
Young Artist Competition Winner
Britten — Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes
2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the tornado which tore through Topeka. We
remember the storm at this evening’s concert of the World in Storm. We will
play Benjamin Britten’s stormy and dramatic Four Sea Interludes from the
opera Peter Grimes and offer perhaps the most famous of all storm music,
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, the Pastoral. The Pastoral features a musical
thunderstorm, including the calm before the storm, the raging storm itself, and
the quiet afterwards, and will provide us an opportunity to reflect on the storm
of 1966 and the years following as Topekans rebuilt. This will be a moving and
powerful evening for all.

The Merchant was started in 2009 by owner Lisa
Boyd. Lisa has done design and fashion on a
budget since she was 16 years old by hitting up
clearance racks, garage sales, and estate sales.
After spending most of her life doing this - she
realized that Topeka needed a resale shop that
specialized in eclectic fashion and great prices.
And that's what we are! The Merchant is all
about two things: Fashion and Price!
We spend our time looking for bargain fashion
items so you don't have to. Our inventory

This drought is causing many foundation and concrete slab
settlement problems!
KB Mudjacking LLC. of Perry Kansas has inspected many foundation
problems in our careers, and if only people knew how to care for
their foundations they could have avoided thousands of dollars in
repair cost or minimized their damage.
Cafe Holliday
800 SW 12th St
232-2188
The primary reason so many people have foundation problems lay
beneath their feet, its called “highly expansive clay soil”. Movement
of foundations is a common problem in northeast Kansas, due to
highly expansive clay soil and changing weather conditions. This
drought continues to plague us all. As the moisture content
reduces in the soil due to this drought the clay shrinks and your
foundation, walkways, and driveways settle.
Do you have windows and doors that won’t close? Does your
basement wall have cracks? Do you think your house is falling down
around you? Is money tight? Then you came to the right place!!
Whatever structure you need repaired, big or small KB Mudjacking
LLC a locally family owned and operated Mudjacking and
Foundation Repair Company will be there for your repairs at the
lowest possible cost, and help you regain your properties value.
There are no tricks up our sleeves, just good old fashion tried and
proven construction methods that have been time tested to fix
your foundation issues. So don’t put it off any longer that only
leads to further damage and costly repairs. Give KB Mudjacking a
call today and one of the Keating Brothers themselves will visit you
soon.

Photography is about reflecting who you are, at your best. You
want to share what's important to you with the whole world,
and I can make that happen. The photos you'll treasure your
whole life aren't the unnatural poses with faces pointed at the
camera. When you look through your memories years later,
what you want is something that will bring you right back to
how you felt that day. Your fingers brushing across your new
husband's face as you gaze up at him, the fire in your eyes the
day before your big game, the look that charmed everyone,
and the spark that just lights up the room. That's what you
need to capture, and for that, you need a photographer that
doesn't see you as just another shoot.
