Our Supporters
Playing our part in celebrating the Island’s culture
Welcome, dear reader, to Manx Litfest 2014. For the third year running, from Wednesday,
September 24th until Sunday, September 28th, we’ll be celebrating literature, poetry and
storytelling, and inspiring young and old to not just enjoy stories, but to create their own.
It doesn’t feel like 12 months since we did this last - but that’s a common comment from festival
organisers the world over. No sooner is one Litfest done, we’re turning our attention to the
following year, and we hope you enjoy the hard work the festival team has put in over the last
year in securing another first-class line up of visiting authors and poets, not to mention a host
of Isle of Man-based writers who will be involved with our National Story Day around Manx
schools on the Friday, and our Writers’ Day on the Saturday.
We’re again taking the festival out around the Island, including House of Manannan, King
William’s College, Castle Rushen, Laxey Glen Gardens and venues around Douglas. For
youngsters, there’s the Roald Dahl Family Day which promises to be absolutely whoopsysplunkers, and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Show. For those slightly older readers, it might be crime
duo Mark Billingham and Martyn Waites or Neil Spring’s The Ghost Hunters that appeals.
We are thrilled to have children’s author Sally Gardner with us, and Nicola Morgan’s talk on her
book, The Teenage Guide to Stress, will prove insightful for both teenagers and parents alike. For
lovers of poetry, the annual ‘Slam’ gets the festival underway on the Wednesday night, and UK
poet Mark Grist brings his Rogue Teacher show to town on the Friday night.
There are two very special projects launching during this year’s festival, and it’s fitting that both
are being born during 2014, while we celebrate our ‘Island of Culture’. The first is The Manx Bard,
which isn’t our initiative, but which we are proud to be involved with. The second is our ‘Manx
Litfest Island of Culture Writing Squad’, which we hope will inspire talented young writers. There
is more about each project within the programme.
Our thanks to everyone who has helped with this year’s festival, including our great team of
volunteers. Finally, a special thanks to all of our financial supporters and sponsors, who can be
seen on the page opposite.

National Story Day
The Ghost Hunters - author Neil Spring at Castle Rushen
On the Friday of each Litfest, we send a team of authors & poets out around
Manx schools, giving talks and workshops and inspiring children to read
and write. We work with the Department of Education & Children and are
indebted to the support of Isle of Man Bank. Among our team of authors,
this year we are delighted to have with us 12-year-old Harri Sansostri, who
published a book on his experiences of going to secondary school.
A fascinating ghostly walk and talk around Castle Rushen with
Neil Spring, author of The Ghost Hunters, joined by host for the night
Barry Quilliam, from Manx Macabre Tours. Neil and Barry will share
stories about the ghosts who are said to haunt the castle, while Neil will
talk about real-life ghost hunter Harry Price, whose investigations in the
1920s/1930s into Borley Rectory, reputedly the most haunted house in
England, were the basis for Neil’s debut novel, published last year.

Acclaimed author and illustrator Sally Gardner won the Costa Children’s
Book Award and the Carnegie Medal for Maggot Moon, which tells of
an alternate history in 1950s England during the space race, with the
country under the rule of the ‘Motherland’. She has written more than
25 books, many of which she has illustrated, and illustrated
several books for other writers. Sally writes for children of
all ages, and other books include I, Coriander and The Red
Necklace. Sally continues to be an avid spokesperson for
dyslexia, working to change the way it is perceived by
society. She is severely dyslexic and argues that it’s not
a disability, but a gift. Sally talks about her career to
author Sara Crowe, whose debut novel Bone Jack was
published earlier this year and was recently named
as one of the best young adult books of 2014 by The
Telegraph.

The Ghost Hunters - author Neil Spring
6.00pm-7.15pm - Embassy Room, British Hotel, Douglas
7.30pm-9.00pm - St Bridget’s Chapel (the Nunnery), Douglas
A must for parents, teachers and teenagers. Author Nicola Morgan has spoken
in schools and at conferences around the world on the subject of the ‘teenage
brain’. Her book Blame My Brain: The Amazing Teenage Brain Revealed was
shortlisted for the Aventis prize for science, and covered the internal upsets
and stresses of adolescence. Her new book, The Teenage Guide to Stress,
is written for teenagers but is essential reading for adults who want
to understand - tackling all the external stresses that teenagers face,
including feelings of anger, depression, fear and failure; changing
bodies and eating disorders; pressures of exams and schoolwork;
bullying and cyber-bullying; and how pre-existing conditions such
as OCD and dyslexia may be affected by adolescence.
In the beautiful setting of St Bridget’s Chapel in the grounds of the
Nunnery, author Neil Spring tells the story behind his novel The
Ghost Hunters, inspired by real-life ghost hunter Harry Price and his
investigations into Borley Rectory, long described as England’s most
haunted house, ‘where objects frequently fly through the air unbidden,
and locals avoid the grounds for fear of facing the spectral nun that
walks there’. The Ghost Hunters was recently optioned for a TV series, by the
team behind Midsomer Murders. Neil will also talk about Harry Price’s link to the Isle of Man - in
the early 1930s, he came to investigate the mystery of Gef the talking mongoose.

Two of the UK’s leading British crime authors, Mark
Billingham and Martyn Waites, team up for a night of
criminally-good entertainment. Mark is the author of
the award-winning Tom Thorne series, which began
with Sleepyhead and most recently saw the publication
of The Bones Beneath. The Sky TV series, Thorne, with
David Morrissey in the lead role, was based on the first
two books in the series. With Martyn attending, you’re
effectively getting three authors for the price of two. He
writes under his own name, including the hard-hitting
Joe Donovan series, and also penned the sequel to
Susan Hill’s ghost story, The Woman in Black. With his
wife, Linda, he writes as Tania Carver, with the sixth in
the Shannon & Esposito series, Truth or Dare, out now.
