Call for
anecdotes
Eagle Days glides into Mound City on Saturday, ducks out on Sunday
In the grassy plot in front of the Squaw
Creek National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters,
cars parked diagonally, their tires crunching
over frozen blades of grass. Several groups of
men, all decked out in camouflage and sporting warm caps and gloves, stood outside,
shooting the breeze. The temperature was 10
degrees Fahrenheit.
“It’s a record cold,” volunteer Daryl Walker
said, his breath puffing out in wispy clouds.
“We don’t have [quite] the crowd of last year.”
Despite the reduction in visitor numbers —
and the fact that Eagle Days was canceled for
Sunday, Dec. 8, due to snowy weather — the
birds themselves were out in good numbers
(around 145), and vendors and guests, as a
whole, were happy.
“We’ve seen a lot of people so far,” Andrea
George of the Remington Nature Center of St.
Joseph, MO, said. “People are excited to be
here.”
In the Visitor’s Center, families toured informational and craft booths while the movie,
“Where Eagles Soar,” played. The gift shop
bustled with those clamoring to buy wildlifethemed Christmas presents.
“It’s going great,” gift shop worker Ed Mc-
Cullough said between ringing up items. “It’s
the biggest day of the year.”
Eagle Days is one of the biggest days of the
year for the majestic eagles of Dickerson Park
Zoo from Springfield, MO, as well. Each year,
zoo employees shuttle Phoenix, a bald eagle,
and Aquila, a golden eagle, as symbols of the
dangers, such as DDT and wind turbines, affecting bird populations.
Inside a cavernous space where eager viewers twittered among themselves waiting for
the appearance of the birds, Phoenix and Aquila waited in covered cages. Before the two
could be released, Dickerson Park Zoo Conservation Education Director Pam Price engaged the audience in eagle knowledge.
“From this little egg,” she began, holding
up a smooth white egg to the crowd, “an eaglet will hatch. Thirty-five days after, the second egg is laid, [and] an eaglet will hatch. If
the third egg is laid, 35 days after that...an
eaglet will hatch. They are full grown at 12
weeks. They grow rapidly. So, that first eaglet
is much larger than that third eaglet. Typically, the third eaglet will not survive in the wild.
There usually is not enough food for that third
eaglet.”
“You’re my family.
Everyone is so good to me.”

Any Mound City resident
with a memorable (even miraculous) story about Christmas, please contact the Mound
City News at (660) 442-5423.
Written stories are not necessary, but those with an interesting holiday anecdote
should anticipate an interview
with the news writer.
The Mound City First
Christian Church Circle of
Ruth will be hosting a cookie
and candy walk on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. to
11 a.m. to help those with no
time to make sweet treats for
the holiday season. A wide
variety of homemade cookies
and candies will be available
for purchase and will cost $5
per pound.
Phoenix, Price explained, was one of those
eaglets who struggled to survive in the wild.
The Dickerson Park Zoo decided to adopt the
female bird; she has now been an ambassador
for bald eagles, a species endangered until the
last few decades, since 1989.
When Phoenix emerged from her cage,
her claws clamped onto a two-layered, thick
glove worn by Jan Carter, a Dickerson Park
Zoo volunteer, the crowd collectively gasped
in awe.
Beyond the building and deep in the refuge,
however, visitors could see the eagles in their
natural habitat. Viewing stations were set up
for eagles’ nests and other refuge creatures,
but the real show was the eagles, many of
whom swooped from tree to tree, ignoring the
train of cars kicking up dust down the gravel
road. Outside of car windows, drivers and
passengers, enthralled by the eagles at Eagle
Days, poked out camera lenses.
For first-timer Jan Abbey of Overland Park,
KS, Eagle Days was a fascinating event, regardless of the frigid weather.
“It is pretty chilly out there,” she said,
“[but] it’s really fabulous.”
Lucille Kunkel - Posed in a photographer’s booth to capture this moment. ““It was the most beautiful coat,” she said.
“The collar was more important than anything else.”
In the cozy living room of her
daughter, Nida Messick’s, home
in Mound City, Lucille Kunkel
sat back in her cushy recliner,
her hair lit from a nearby lamp
as if a halo, as she told the story
of her birth.
“My oldest brother, Lawrence,
and my dad went to the country
church at Richville,” she began.
“When Lawrence [went in], he
said, ‘Guess what happened at
our house last night? They left
Christmas [presents] in the dining room and a baby in the bed!’”
Kunkel chuckled as she relaxed into the welcoming folds
of the chair. The family’s two
dogs, Shocky, white blond, and
Taylor, dark brown with gray
strands of fur edging his muzzle, lay in repose on the floor,
curled to each other like a yinyang symbol. Bearcat, black and
chubby, purred from the back of
an adjacent sofa.
Kunkel was born Lucille Elizabeth Fink on Dec. 25, 1913,
just east of Oregon, MO, in Holt
County to German and Russian
parents. She grew up with two
older brothers, the aforementioned Lawrence and Clinton,
both of whom are the subjects
of several “Uncle Lawrence and
Uncle Clinton” anecdotes, and a
sister, Lorine.
Kunkel met her husband shortly after graduating from Oregon
High School in 1931.
“He lived in New Point, and I
lived in Oregon,” she said. “The
people were rivals [back then,
but] he asked me out on a date.”
The couple married in 1936
and lived on a farm in New
Point, MO, for almost 40 years
before retiring to Oregon, where
they stayed for 37 years. It was
only recently that Kunkel moved
in with Messick. In a nice twist,
it happens that the furniture Kunkel and her husband bought as
newlyweds has made its way to
Messick’s guest room — Kunkel’s new home.
“She’s sleeping in her marital
bed,” Messick said with a smile.
Not long after meeting her
husband,
Kunkel
attended
Northwest Teachers’ College
in Maryville, MO, then worked
as a teacher in one-room rural schools in Andrew County,
Lincoln and Marion. After nine
years Kunkel began teaching elementary school at Mound City
R-2; nine years after that, she
switched to teaching remedial
reading at South Holt R-1. In
1962 she earned a bachelor of
science degree, and in 1969 she
received the “Award of Merit”
by “Grade Teacher Magazine”
for outstanding teaching performance in elementary education.
At one point, Kunkel said,
both she and Messick worked at
the same school.
“I had an eighth-grade student
who, I think, Mom had in third
grade,” Messick said. “He said to
me, ‘You’re not nearly as nice as
your mother.’”
-Lucille Kunkel
Messick rocked back on the
couch in laughter, while Kunkel
blushed. She is, it seems, a most
beloved family member, and her
store of charming family tales
only endears others to her.
“Tell about your dad,” Messick urged.
“You can tell the story,” Kunkel said to her daughter.
“No, no, you tell it best.”
“I remember the first airplane
flying the area,” Kunkel said,
gazing away as if looking back
in time. “The neighbors called
and said there was an airplane
in the sky. You know how time
passes so fast? [But] I can still
see that silver metal thing in the
air. Dad said, ‘That’ll never be
successful.’”
“He was one of the first farmers to have a tractor, [but he]
wasn’t [always] very progressive,” Messick added while Kunkel reached for words.
Kunkel nodded in agreement
and gratitude for Messick’s help.
“I’m glad you’re my daughter.”
Messick beamed.
Later, after discussing Kunkel’s famous sugar cookies and
surprise holiday gifts for family members, Messick matter-offactly pointed out, “Her greatest
legacy to us is her prayer life.
She prays for us every day. It’s a
legacy no one else can replace.”
“You’re my family,” Kunkel
said with eyes shining. “Everyone is so good to me.”
Kunkel, with the company of
her loving family and friends,
will turn 100 years old on Christmas Day. Cards may be sent to
19405 Highway 59, Mound City,

Wednesday, Dec. 4, saw
residents discussing interesting events occurring during the
month of December. Those that
caught residents’ eyes the most
were the birthday of Scrabble
(Dec. 4, 1948), National Cotton
Candy Day (Dec. 7) and Bathtub
Party Day (Dec. 5). Residents,
of course, were already familiar
with the importance of Dec. 7,
the anniversary of the attack on
Pearl Harbor, Dec. 25, Christmas, and Dec. 31, New Year’s
Eve.
Dee Ann Heck provided lovely piano music the morning of
Thursday, Dec. 5. Theresa Jordan
also played an impromtu piece
to residents’ delight. During the
bingo session in the afternoon,
Gordon Robbins, Judy Howard,
Iva Tubbs, Kaye Johnson, Phyllis Heck, Barbara Hanlon, Mary
Lee Privett, Shirley Jackson and
Jean McCall volunteered. The
big winners were Judy Carney,
Mary Wilson, Carol Ball and Lucyle Benne.
Barbara Hanlon assisted with
glamour nails on Friday, Dec. 6.
During the morning, residents
also enjoyed a couple of chapters from the book Unpacking
Memories. In stepping outside
of the routine, residents explored
cooking options with turnips donated by Dorothy Egbert’s family. After a taste test, residents
determined that glazing turnips
was not the best idea; the leftover turnips will be served in a
more conventional way, most
likely mashed or in a casserole.
Residents rested and relaxed
during the weekend, playing
games of choice on Saturday,
Dec. 7. On Sunday, Dec. 8,
Larry Brickey and the Mound
City Baptist Church family provided morning services, and the
Mound City Methodist Church
conducted afternoon services.

Outpatient treatment
for opioid dependence
now available
Dr. Stuart Krein, a psychiatrist
at St. Francis Family Life Services
in Maryville, MO, is now offering
help to those addicted to opiates,
such as prescription painkillers. The
outpatient detoxification program
uses Suboxone (buprenorphine and
naloxone) to provide relief from
cravings and prevent symptoms of
withdrawal.
“This medication is for people addicted to opiates [who] can’t get off
them,” Krein said. “They want to,
but they don’t know how.”
Over the past several years, abuse
of pain medications has risen dramatically. Authorities are not sure
whether the increase is due to easy
access to drugs or a side effect of the
myth that prescription drugs cannot
be as harmful as street drugs, but
numbers show opiate addiction has
now reached an alarming level; it is
second only to marijuana as a drug
of abuse, according to the National
Institute of Drug Abuse.

William White
chapter meets
The William White chapter
of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) met
Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Mound
City United Methodist Church.
The SOS ladies of the church
served a festive Christmas dinner while members enjoyed a
program on the Good Citizen
winners.
Six students from area
schools were guests as winners
of the DAR Good Citizen program and scholarship contest,
which is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of
good citizenship. A student, as
a school representative, must
have the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and
patriotism to an outstanding
degree. The winning students
were chosen by their school’s
faculty and peers.
Good Citizen Chairman, Annamarie Hunziger, announced
the outstanding students:
Chandler Farmer from Rock
Port, MO; Makynlee Buckles
from Oregon, MO; Eryn Acton
from Mound City, MO; Kelly
Dougherty from Craig, MO;
John Lang from Tarkio, MO;
and Brooklynn Morris from
Fairfax, MO. Each student told
about his or her future plans
and introduced accompanying guests. The William White
Chapter winner was Eryn Acton. Her essay and school records will be sent to the Missouri State Chairman.
Regent Mary Lee Privett,
who first opened the meeting
with the pledge of allegiance
and the singing of the national
anthem, continued the meeting
with the DAR ritual. Chaplain
Faire Schoonover, who gave the
opening prayer, also read the
Christmas Story from the Book
of Luke in the Bible.
In additional meeting news,
members gave reports, and a
Christmas check was sent to
the Cameron Missouri Veterans’
Home for the activities fund.
Volunteer hours were collected
to be sent to National, and delegates were elected to the Missouri State DAR Conference in
May 2014. The April meeting
was scheduled to be hosted by
Mary Lou Knepper in Tarkio.
The next meeting will be at
12 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at
the United Methodist Church in
Mound City. For reservations,
contact Regent Privett. Those
interested in joining may contact a local member for more
information. The organization
is open to all women who can
prove an ancestor had an active
part in the establishment of the
United States of America.
While most Missouri citizens
were still enjoying Thanksgiving
leftovers and making plans for the
Christmas season, the General Assembly was meeting in a special
session to consider a legislative
proposal that, hopefully, would
entice Boeing to consider Missouri
as the site for its new production
line for the 777X airliner. The call
to session came quickly and was
somewhat disconcerting as substantive details for the project and
details of the proposed incentive
package were not available. The
governor was advocating for an
expansion of tax credits with no
savings or caps on other programs,
which became a red flag for many
of us. However, skepticism was diminished as we looked at the bigpicture details of both the bill and
the economic impact the Boeing
project could have on our state.
Right now, Boeing employs
nearly 15,000 direct jobs in the St.
Louis area, but it also has generated tens of thousands of jobs across
the state with its suppliers and vendors; in fact, Boeing has nearly 700
suppliers and vendors in 24 counties all around Missouri. Boeing
supports as many as 30,000 direct
and indirect jobs here in our state.
The legislative package the governor asked us to approve would
expand the capacity of existing tax
incentive programs for this project.
These four programs — Missouri
Works, Missouri Works Training,
Missouri BUILD and the Real
Property Tax Increment Allocation
Redevelopment Act — are fiscally
responsible and proven to work in
attracting companies that will create well-paying, family-supporting
jobs.
When looking at the big picture
for this proposal, we see that Boeing could receive a huge amount of
money if it chooses to open its new
production line and create jobs
in our state. However, economic
analysis indicates that Missouri’s
economy would grow tremendously as a result, and the benefits
that Missouri would enjoy would
be much more than the investment
in the project. The realization that
this project has the potential to
have such a profoundly positive
impact on our economy makes the
idea of handing out targeted incentives much easier to swallow.
What is even more important is
that these incentives will only kick
in if Boeing creates at least 2,000
additional jobs in Missouri over
the next 10 years. With this, we
have no risk of wasting taxpayer
dollars or making a bad investment. Quite simply, this incentive
package will only go into effect if
Boeing decides to come here and
does, in fact, create the kinds of
jobs it has promised. If they do not
choose Missouri for future production, we have lost nothing but a
week of Christmas shopping as we
debated this issue in Jefferson City.
I am not a big advocate of the increasing amount of tax credits that
Missouri is accumulating in over
60 programs, but the ones that give
us a good return on investment can
be used effectively to incentivize
business growth in our state. We
will find out sometime in January
if our efforts have been sufficient
and what Boeing plans to do.

Take care with holiday
lights that shine bright
like a diamond
As the holidays are quickly
approaching, Kansas City Power
and Light (KCP&L) has several
tips for how customers can avoid
a Clark Griswold situation and,
instead, be safe while stringing
up strands of lights.
“Safety is our priority at
KCP&L, not only with our
employees but also with our
customers,” Marvin Rollison,
KCP&L vice president of safety and corporate services, said.
“During the holiday season, we
want to provide our customers
with helpful tips on how to light
up their homes in a safe and efficient manner.”
Safety tips for the holiday season are:
• Check each set of lights,
new and old, for split
cords, worn ends or loose
connections.
• Replace burned-out bulbs
with new bulbs immediately. Make sure to use the
correct wattage.
• When running an extension cord in the garage,
make sure to tape the cord
down to prevent people
from stumbling over it.
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
If hanging lights outside,
take care to use lights
certified for outdoor use.
Never use indoor lights
outside.
Check the extension cord
to be sure it is rated for
outdoor use.
Do not plug more than
three sets of lights into
each extension cord.
Stay away from power or
feeder lines leading from
utility poles into homes.
Be sure lights are secure
so they do not move during weather events such
as wind or rain.
To hold lights in place,
use insulated hooks or
staples, and avoid nails
and tacks.
Consider turning off holiday lights before bedtime
or when no one is at home
in order to avoid shorting
out the lights and starting
a fire.
When removing holiday lights, take time, and
use caution. Do not tug
or yank strands as they
could unravel and impede
safety.
There’s still time
to personalize those
gifts for
someone special!

the dinner was first conceived
after Cindy and Dennis Reule learned a church member

celebrated with his or her family; thinking that no one should
have to be by him or herself on
such a day, the Reules decided to
offer the Christmas dinner as an

The White Rose restaurant and the Trinity Lutheran Church in

will take place until Dec. 15. Entry sheets are available at the White

the primary blood supplier to
more than 70 hospitals and medical centers in the Kansas City

“When individuals normally
think of essential community

HISTORICAL
This Week’s
History
From the Mound City News archives
50 Years Ago - 1963
• A huge haul was taken in Craig burglaries of
two businesses. At the Hy-Klas store, the intruders succeeded in entering the safe. This netted
them $50 in silver and $20 in currency. They
also took 275 cartons of cigarettes, 150 record
albums, two cases of one-pound cans of coffee,
20 boxes of shotgun shells, a carton of cigars, a
quantity of meat, four electric toasters, five electric clocks, two electric coffee makers, three hair
dryers, a table radio, two portable radios and
a can opener. The thieves also entered Fern’s
Cafe. Less merchandise was taken, but they got
more spending money, approximately $200.

out child-sized aprons for
several of her 10 great-granddaughters. The aprons, according to Harding, are more vintage than they are modern; each
features an item of detail, such
as a doily or dresser scarf, and
all are edged in a rainbow of
rickrack.
“It takes more time to find all
the stuff,” Harding said with a
laugh. “I go as far as Hamilton,
Branson, even Cameron for
fabric stores.”
The handmade treats adding
life to the wood-paneled community center didn’t stop with
just textiles; homemade delicacies, including those made
on site, were available for purchase. Workers bustled busily
behind the counter separating
the kitchen from the shopping
area, parceling out plates of
warm breakfast casseroles,
while the Holiday Club, just
opposite, sat proudly behind its
home-cooked pastries, pies and
fudge.
“This is our big project of the
year,” member Donna Kurtz
said. “All of the money goes
back into the community.”
Adding a little flora to the
mix, Janet Rosenauer and her
sister, Joy Thompson, set up
long tables covered in flowers
and pine, a nod to the traditional wintery mix favored during
the holiday season.
Tapping into the Christmasthemed (and occasionally artificial) verdure trend, Bev Meyer,
prior to Thompson’s poinsettia
demonstration, led a group of
10 women in a wreath-making
presentation.
“I guess I’m a little like my
grandmother,” Meyer said as
she weaved merry poinsettia
blooms into a wreath. “I like
the sparkle [of decorations].”
While
shoppers
milled
around the venue smelling candles at the Scentsy booth and
trying out fluffy scarves, the
South Holt choir, led by director Sally Kirchhoff, serenaded
crowds with Christmas tunes,
including “Angels We Have
Heard on High,” “Silent Night,”
“Christmas Chopsticks” and
“Blue Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, everyone,
and thank you,” Kirchhoff said
to the enthusiastically applauding audience.
The feeling of joy and contentment was universally felt
that morning, by the vendors
selling their precious goods, by
the parents, grandparents and
local residents listening to their
loved ones sing and by the organizers.
“So far, so good,” Christmas Around the Square planner Shyann Ray said cheerfully
while bouncing her giggling
toddler son on her hip.
New Oregon resident Mary
Price, grandmother of South
Holt chanteuses Rachel and
Megan Binder, agreed.
“It’s just wonderful,” she
said.
The South Holt Choir performed a program of Christmas favorites - At “Christmas Around the Square” on Thursday, Dec. 5, in Oregon, MO. “I think you can see why I’m
quite proud of them,” choir director Sally Kirchhoff said after
her student singers gave rousing renditions of “Blue Christmas”
and ”Last Christmas” among other holiday songs.
Shimmery scarves and snug animal hats - Were among
some of the handmade items sold at the Christmas Around the
Square event on Thursday, Dec. 5, in Oregon, MO. According to Penny Brown, the scarves take her roughly 45 minutes
to make. “I’m almost out [of them]” she said around 11 a.m.
“They’re good for stocking stuffers.”

Bev Meyer creates a festive Christmas wreath - During a demonstration at the
“Christmas Around the Square” event on Thursday, Dec. 5. Meyer had several tips for
the group of ladies watching, including how to save money and which kinds of ribbon
(those trimmed in wire) were best. “Sometimes you have to wrestle with these things a
bit,” Meyer advised.

enjoyed visiting our nation’s capital,

Some upcoming
events
that Jorden is
most looking

to
are the Legislative Shadowing
Project and State Leadership
Conference. “I am looking forward to State the most and the
least. I get to see some of Missouri’s best leaders, but will
have a hard time leaving my officer team,” Miller says. Upon
asking Jorden what her favorite
part of being a state officer is
she replied, “This is the hardest question I have been asked.
I love everything about being
a state officer from long days
and nights of planning to see
it all come together. I do, however, love the people I meet the
most.”

2013, ninth grade students met
in the Mound City Library from

sugar and cholesterol. They
also completed a health history,
height, weight, and body composition analysis, which is all
private and confident. This will

The Prowl
As the first State FCCLA

approximately 20 years, after
Sarah Heck,
Jorden Miller has many
responsibilities. She is
the
State
Vice President of Development,
and her duties are to
plan

lead all state
association
conferences, plan a detailed budget for
the year, propose new state
by-laws, serve as a liaison
to the region, and get members involved. Mrs. Karlene
Harrison, the Mound City
FCCLA Advisor adds, “This
position is a great opportunity for Jorden to develop her
leadership skills and travel to
many different places.” Jorden has traveled to Nashville,
Washington D.C., Osage

Oklahoma City and Jefferson

After the composition analysis,
ninth graders met in Mrs. Karlene
Harrison’s room and nurse personnel from CH-F discussed nutrition and heart health risks. All
of the students who participated
will enter their name in a $100
cash drawing. Students made
health goals and if they meet their
goals, they will receive Worlds of
Fun or Schlitterbahn pass.
This year, like every other year in the month of December, the
Mound City school teachers are participating in a door decorating contest. The reason for the competition is to get everyone
in the holiday spirit. The elementary and middle school door
theme is Duck Dynasty Christmas. The high school teachers get
to choose their own theme. Some of the themes used in high
school are Snoopy, the Grinch, Despicable Me, Feliz Navidad,
and penguins. The teachers enjoy competing and allowing the
students to help and get involved. Take time and check out the
decorations. Happy Holidays.

SENIOR
SPOTLIGHT
HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
By Jarrod Hurst
Shaylin Miller is the daughter of
Lori and Randy Miller with one
older brother Ethan. She has one
pet dog named Otis Mojo Miller.
In Shaylin’s free time she enjoys
shooting guns and hunting. Her
favorite foods are steak, fruit and
anything BBQ, while drinking
sweet tea and Dr. Pepper. Shaylin
loves to hang out at area bowling
allies with her friends, and her favorite vacation was going to Germany for the first time. Her favorite classes are Art and Ag, with
her favorite teacher being Mrs.
Cate Kenney. Shaylin’s favorite quote is “The Iron Cowgirl,”
“She’s strong willed and independent. She’s as beautiful inside as
she is outside. She’ll never take
no for an answer, and when she’s
told she can’t do it because she’s
a girl, she’ll prove you wrong
every time. She loves the thrill
of the ride, and the romance of
adventure. She’s you and she’s
me, but most of all….she just is.”
After high school, Shaylin plans
to join the Military and attend
college. If she had one wish, she
would wish to meet Luke Bryan,
Tim McGraw, Keith Urban and
Jason Aldean.
