Ross Orlando's Tahoe Spotlight
Lake
Tahoe,
the
biggest
entertainment town in the world has
attracted legendary talent for decades.
Harrahs South Shore Room that
opened in 1959, has brought many of
them to our town. The Everly Brothers
with Phil and Don was one of them. Phil
passed away at age 74 recently, ending
this classic duo that made hit songs in the
late 50's and early 60's. They won over
the country, pop and even R&B listeners
with their harmony and guitars. Their
mom and dad had a radio show and the
brothers performed at age 8 and 6. They
had 34 songs on the Billboard Pop Charts
and half of them were top 10. They were
in the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame the first
year in 1986. They inspired generations
of musicians that included, Beatles,
Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkle, to
name a few. The Beatles would play
their songs in their live set when they
performed. Classics like, "Wake Up Little
Susie", "Bye Bye Love", "All I Have To
Do Is Dream", "Cathy's Clown", "Let It
Be Me", "Walk Right Back", "When Will
I Be Loved", was cool to hear when they
played Harrahs Tahoe some years back.
Dressed in their always classic black,
Phil and Don were very nice backstage
and happy to be playing Tahoe again with
their mix of rockabilly style that only they
could do.
Last month Mickey Thomas brought
his band Starship with all those 80's
Jefferson Starship hits. With Starships
band for over 20 years, Mickey's
distinctive rock voice has toured playing
classic hits that he started in the late
70's with Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around
and Fell in Love". This Tahoe favorite
just put out an album called "Loveless
Fascination". Also at Harrahs was
Booker T. Jones. He collaborated with
Otis Redding, Albert King, Sam and
Dave while playing for Stax Records.
"Green Onions" his classic, and playing
and producing for Eric Clapton, Neil
Young, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, The
M.G's and Bill Withers, has won him
many awards including the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame. He played on guitar
Jimmie Hendrix's "Hey Joe" and talked
about meeting Hendrix at the Monterey
Pop Festival. Booker has a lot of music
history through out the years.
Coming February 8th War, February
15th Kellie Pickler, February 22nd The
Wailers, March 1st Walk Off The Earth.
The variety of music continues. Check
out Peek NightClub after Harrahs shows
with go-go dancers, guest DJ's, that
include DJ Pauly D February 22nd. Arty
the Party at Center Stage pays a huge
variety of your favorite tunes on Friday
and Saturday.
At Horizon the Illusion Fusion
show starring Alex Ramon and featuring
Meghan Doyle, is still going strong for 2
years now. Alex toured with Disney and
Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey
circus. He's won many awards at such a
young age. This magician mixes amazing
illusions, slight of hand close up, comedy,
audience participation, and it's fun for the
whole family. He's mesmerized millions
around the world and you'll enjoy him
here in Tahoe.
MontBleu has a new revue show
called Sweet Talk -a delicious electro
-burlesque review that features exotic
dancers, aerialists, a fire performer and
sword swallower. A high energy show with
dramatic high-flying cirque with dancers
who swing, dive and fly to DJ Viola La La
Mia's beat driven music mix. Produced by
Tahoe's Jessica Broyles, the owner of
Champagne Productions. February 8th
The Devil Makes Three with guest The
Brothers Comatose. The mix of ecliptic
blend of blue grass, country, folk, jazz,
ragtime, and rockabilly is why The Devil
Makes Three sell out everywhere they
perform. Opal and Blu NightClub with
go-go dancers, body painting, DJ's and
live music with drink specials, goes on at
MontBlue also. Ciera Steak and Chop
House, Tahoe's only Four Diamond
Restaurant at MontBleu is proud to have
Tommy Walker as their Maitre'd for 30
years. Tommy knows how to make your
dining experience very special. With 300
wines and a variety of delicious entrees
to choose from. Tommy and his talented
wait staff will make you happy.
The Pints and Paddles Cruise with
Ike and Martin on the M.S. Dixie II on
Wednesdays from 5:30 - 7:00 pm, is a
big hit in Tahoe. They serve pub style
menu and with fun music and a party
atmosphere, they have been selling out
on this popular cruise at Zephyr Cove
Resort.
McP's Pub Tahoe at Stateline has
live music every night with no cover.
Get a bite to eat and enjoy our local
musicians. Classic Cue has 7 pool
tables, beer pong, foosball, darts, 6 TV's,
also features live music on Saturday. Call
for details. Wednesday and Friday has
Karaoke and food and drink specials.
Harveys has The Improv with new
comics each week and host Howie
Nave, Cabo Wabo with entertainment
every night, the Hard Rock and Straw
Hat Sports Bar and Grille.
And remember, Have Fun, You're in
Tahoe!!
Fly Fishing
Where is the water, we are going
to be fishing in our bathtubs if we don't
get some snow this Winter... or, there
is the Lake! Stillwater fishing may be
the only option. For now there are
still opportunities to be had and this is
the time of the year that the bugs start
hatching and the fish start eating them
off of the surface! You might have to
drive for it, but it should be worth it and
how about all the Big Fish being caught
on Pyramid Lake, Get yours while they
last... all it takes is one over 20 pounds
to make it all worth it. Here's the report
for the highlights!
East Walker River Fishing Report
CA section: Flows are at Winter
minimums with Midges and Baetis
on the menu. Pattern sizes have
gone back to 20s and 22s to keep it
interesting. On occasion the fish will
eat off of the surface but don’t count
on it for now. Cloudy days are worth a
look! Otherwise down and dirty in the
buckets. Streamers will take a fish or
two when presented in a slow fashion.
Nevada section: The Rosachi
Ranch has smaller crowds and can be
awesome this time of the year. Best
fishing is during the middle part of the
day. Small Baetis nymphs and midge
pupae are working with the occasional
dry take. Attractor dries used as an
indicator will fool them now and again.
The smaller the fly the better for the
next month or so!
Guides Available call 530-5418208
Little Truckee River Fishing
Report
There are fish but the fishing has
been getting tougher due to pressure
from the access being open without
snow. Midges most of the Winter with
occasional Baetis and Winter Stones.
Access for now is available but will
change with snow if we get it! The fish
have been keying on the Winter Stone!
Truckee River (Ca) Fishing Report
Year round section (CA) below
267 Bridge. Hit and miss fishing all
winter long. Access will depend on
snow coverage. Midges Mostly all
Winter and looking for Baetis on Cloudy
days. Afternoons will be best as the
temperatures rise. Look for lethargic
fish that might eat!
Truckee River (Nv) Fishing Report: The lower the better as we get deeper
into Winter. Look for good days when
the air temps hit 45F or better. Midges,
Baetis and Streamers! February should
be great for those that like the dry fly!
Guides Available call (530-5418208). Learn it and Love it! We will
be doing a limited amount of float trips
on the Truckee this Winter, please call
for details.
Tahoe Area Stillwaters:
Pyramid Lake - Open and fishing
ok but mostly from boats and float
tubes. Some fish have been caught
fishing from shore and a few big
ones as well which is great for Winter
season fishing! The fish are eating the
Chubs so look for pods of bait fish and
throw streamers to match! Indicator
fishing has also started with rumor of
a 20 pound fish on a Chironomid. The
patterns have changed and the fishing
continues to impress with numerous
big fish being caught so far this winter. Don’t wait for the spring, fish now and
get the big ones!
Indian Creek Reservoir –
There are still plenty of fish in Indian
Victor Babbit
Creek and they stocked just prior to
freezing! Access is going to be tough
but there is open water as of end of
January. Buggers in Black, Olive and
or Brown will work along the edges.
Check for Ice if we get a cold snap.
Caples Lake: Ready to go with
great Ice Conditions. A few larger
fish have been caught early this year.
Fish close to the Dam or Spillway with
Kastmasters, Worms or Power Bait!
Red Lake Fishing Report: Ice
is ready to go with numerous anglers
fishing along the Dam area. A few larger
Lahonton Cutts up to 4 pounds have
been landed and A few Brookies. Fish
with Kastmasters, Worms and Power
Bait! Bay Shrimp, Salmon Eggs and
Meal Worms have been taking a few
as well.
Get out and fish, the season never
ends around here!

Comedy From The Mountain
“Ghost Whisperer,” “Las Vegas” and a season as
himself in VH1’s “Celebrity Fit Club.” He was also on
NBC’s “Friends,” “Third Rock from the Sun” and “That
70s Show” on FOX. For the record, I’ll always be a
Dunkie fan and you will too when you see him February
5th through the 9th appearing with Avi Liberman.
Well, we received some snow last last month and
now I’m thinking, “I hope this wasn’t it, right?” I don’t
think I’m asking too much if we could have snow once
every two weeks. It doesn’t seem right that 2/3 of the
country gets to experience a polar vortex and all we
get is something that resembles heavy psoriasis on
a windy day at best. I remember when it finally did
snow last month (of any real significant amount) even
those who were atheist were making snow angels in
the snow. Let’s home for a late surge into Spring so
we can salvage all that was lost during those first two
months of Winter.
A comic not effected by climate change (because
he’s weathered out so much already) is Brian
Dunkleman. If some of the best comedy comes
from the most pain than Dunkleman is not a proven
comedian but also a proven commodity. I first worked
with ‘Dunkie’ pre-American Idol when he was middling
back in the late 90s and we’ve been buds pretty much
since then. When 2002 rolled around and a new
reality-based television show on FOX called American
Idol came along things drastically changed. Back then
the show had two hosts: Ryan Seacrest and Brian
Dunkleman. Back in 2002 when Idol first premiered
there were two hosts: Ryan Seacrest and Dunkleman.
After Idol's first season ended, Dunkleman announced
that he’d, “Decided not to return for season 2 in order
to pursue other opportunities in the world of TV and
feature films.” Does he regret that decision? Brian has
said repeatedly that departing Idol in its infancy was
not his smartest move but that he really wanted to be
an actor. “Listen, I’d like to say that I was just young
and stupid, but the truth is, I really wasn’t that young,”
he said. “What I wanted to do with my life is be an actor
and that’s going great.” Brian also said that he found it
hard to watch the contestants get criticized. “I didn’t like
watching those kids being brought to tears like that. I
didn’t understand why they had to do it, I didn’t get it,”
he said. To this day Dunkleman gets chastised in the
entertainment industry including an extra scene from
The Simpsons Movie DVD where Marge, Lisa, and
Homer, acting as Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and
Simon Cowell, respectively, audition the actual Simon
Cowell for a role. When he fails, they drop him into a
pit of lions, where Bart, acting as Ryan Seacrest, says
that they “haven't eaten this well since Dunkleman.”
Just two years ago on an episode of Castle, “A Dance
with Death” (on ABC TV) Dunkleman is referenced
as an example of a has-been game-show host whom
nobody remembers. Ouch. To be fair though since
leaving American Idol Dunkleman has had guest spots
It’s always entertaining when Allan Havey is
on my morning radio show every Monday. Our long
running segment, “Howiewood & Haveywood” during
the 9 o’clock hour has been a staple for my radio show
where we talk everything related to the big (and small)
screen from an insider’s perspective (not me of course
but Allan). Last year was a huge one for Havey having
appeared on NBC’s “The Office,” the season finale
of “Mad Men” on AMC and on the Emmy nominated
sitcom, “Louie” working with his good bud, comedian
and actor Louis C.K. on the FX Network. Havey
also performed at Tony La Russa’s annual Animal
Rescue Foundation (ARF) donating his time to help
our 4-legged friends and is also a huge fan of the St.
Louis Cardinals (which LaRussa coaches). Allan has
appeared on the big screen in “Hancock” starring Will
Smith, “The Informant!” with Matt Damon, “Internal
Affairs” with Richard Gere and Andy Garcia, “Checking
Out” with Jeff Daniels, “Rounders” (again with Matt
Damon), “Wild Things Part 2: The Glades” with Isaiah
Washington and is currently working on a feature
length film with fellow comedian/actor Chris Rock. On
the small screen Havey has appeared on Larry David’s
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” (HBO), “The Late Show with
David Letterman,” “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,”
Comedy Central and frequent appearances on Ashton
Kutcher’s reality-based television show, “Punk’d.”
Appearing with Havey is Louisiana comedian Jodi
Borrello who is both fun on and off stage and a blast
to chat with. See them both February 12th through the
16th.
As mentioned earlier Allan Havey is on my
morning radio show every Monday so what a great
way to start the week. And what better way to end the
week on my show than having political humorist Will
Durst on, huh? His segment, “A Burst of Durst” closes
out my show and I can’t think of a better individual
than Durst to do it. As one of this country’s premiere
commentators on everything making news, Durst has
this ability being able to decipher all of the mumbo
Howie Nave
jumbo out there that passes as news and then tweak
it into the funny chamber where it then funnels out into
the Durst thought process machine and makes it both
outrageously funny and intelligent at the same time.
Durst’s down-to-earth roots were harvested in his home
state of Wisconsin while growing up. The 5-time Emmy
nominee and recipient of 7 consecutive nominations
for the American Comedy Awards Stand Up of the Year
(and the first comic ever invited to perform at Harvard’s
Kennedy School of Government) just wrapped up his
latest one-man show entitled, “BoomeRaging: From
LSD to OMG” at the Marsh Theatre in San Francisco.
I believe it’s on its way to New York now if memory
serves and wouldn’t be his first time there. His other
one-man show, “The All-American Sport of Bipartisan
Bashing: Common Sense Rantings from a Raging
Moderate” played Off-Broadway to rave reviews and
came with an accompanying book that you can still
order on Amazon.com. He was also the first American
to be nominated for the prestigious Perrier Award at
the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for his one man show
“You Can’t Make Stuff Up Like This.” By the way, a
lot of folks might be interested in knowing that he ran
for mayor of San Francisco taking no PAC funding
coming in 4th out of 11. Durst spent a total of $1,200
getting 2% of the vote. And speaking of San Francisco
mayors Durst had a radio show with former San
Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. The show was called,
“Will & Willie” and one of the funniest and seriously
entertaining programs ever. There are too many credits
to list but some highlights include The New York Times
calling Durst, “quite possibly the best political satirist
working in the country today.” The Los Angeles Times
called him, “A modern day Will Rogers,” The San
Francisco Examiner stated that he’s “the heir apparent
to Mort Sahl and Dick Gregory” while The Chicago
Tribune hailed Durst as a “hysterical hybrid of Hunter
Thompson and Charles Osgood.” Good stuff. Working
with Durst is another highly motivated comedian when
it comes to politics (but more off stage than on): David
Gee. He’s another great comic and working with both
Durst and Gee it’s going to be a very intellectual week
that’s for sure. See them both February 19th through
the 23rd.
Howie Nave is the host/emcee/manager of
The Improv @ Harveys every Wednesday through
Sunday and also hosts his own morning show
