Ross Orlando's Tahoe Spotlight
Hello 2014, as Tahoe continues to
bring in a huge variety of entertainment
and events through-out the years. The
12th Annual Tahoe Adventure Film
Festival, in the MontBleu Theatre,
hosted by Todd Offenbacher from
Tahoe TV, was another sold out event
that brought Tahoe locals together for
an exciting evening. Mixing DJ music,
go-go dancers, win a ski trip, Little Jon's
flips (Todd's mini me), the best extreme
athletes and thrill seekers on film doing
amazing unheard of things that pumps
your adrenaline and a cool social scene
to the yearly mix of fun for all to enjoy.
The Lake Tahoe Entertainer is one of
the sponsors of this popular event and
party. MontBleu had packed crowds for
comedy star Daniel Tosh, New Year's
Eve parties and Snow Globe after parties.
January 11th the comedy of Jon Lovitz
and Tim Meadows from "Saturday Night
Live" fame will bring a lot of laughs.
January 18th Blood Sweat & Tears
featuring Bo Bice, will bring classic rock
hits with a horn section. January 26th
STS9 is returning with their electronic
jam band and light production that blows
you away. February 1st is Iration, The
Movement and Micah Brown. Iration
is a fusing mix of reggae with rock and
pop. Blu and Opal nightclubs have drink
specials and a variety of music with gogo dancers and body painting going on.
Harrah's always has a variety of
music to check out in their legendary
showroom that has been going on since
1959. I loved Tower of Power, the 10
piece band that just played there! They
are my all time favorite thats been
performing in Tahoe since the 70's. For
45 years, tenor sax, vocalist, songwriter
and band leader Emilio Castillo, has kept
this soulful funk sound band together Thank God. Their high energy show with
a James Brown flavor to it, always keeps
their fans happy, that includes many
from other countries that they tour over
the years. Also at Harrah's was Chubby
Checker (Ernest Evans), he was a
major contributor to pop culture in 1960
in bringing the song and dance "The
Twist". He also had songs and dances
that included "Limbo Dance", "The Fly",
"Hucklebuck", "Pony Time", "Dance the
Mess Around" and "Let's Twist Again".
Checker is the only recording artist to
place 5 albums in the Top 12 all at once.
Billboard Magazine named "The Twist"
the biggest chart hit of all time. Chubby
also had a number 1 hit in 2008 on the
dance charts with "Knock Down the
Walls". He brought guys and girls on
stage to dance and everyone had a lot
of fun. Coming January 11th is Starship
featuring Mickey Thomas, who is a
Tahoe favorite and lived here at one time.
Singing Elvin Bishop's 1976 hit, "Fooled
Around and Fell in Love" put his voice
on the map of show biz. Then with rocks
Starship hits that include "Jane", "Find
Your Way Back", "We Built this City",
"Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now", "It's
Not Over (till it's over), "Sara", and many
more. They just put out a new album
called "Loveless Fascination". Mickey
is always cool to talk to and you'll love
his show. January 25th is Pablo Cruise
who played Kirkwood in 1977 when they
had their big hits "APlace in the Sun"
and "Whatcha Gonna Do?" and was my
first celeb photo in Tahoe with drummer
Steve Price. Other hits include "Love Will
Find a Way", "I Want You Tonight", "I Go
to Rio", and "Worlds Away". In 1979 they
broke Elvis Presley's attendance record
at Sahara Tahoe, now called Horizon,
when they had a great showroom.
Those were some fun party backstage
days. They put on a great live show!
January 18th is Booker T. Jones. With
many Grammy's, he writes, produces
and has played on many artists albums
that include Willie Nelson, Ray Charles,
Neil Young to name a few. His 1962
hit instrumental "Green Onions" on
keyboards is a classic. February 1st is
Toad the Wet Sprocket with early 90's
hits "Walk on the Ocean" and "All I Want".
Peek Nightclub with go-go dancers and
guest DJ's and guest celebrity's always
creates a good time.
Sushi Pier had their 3rd Annual
Rail Jam for charity. With ski and board
competitions, DJ's, raffles, sponsor
tents, auctions and drink specials, they
also raised money for SOS Outreach for
the youth. A great event for Tahoe. Mott
Canyon Tavern and Grill had their 16th
Annual Christmas Party. The packed
house had lots of Christmas spirit with
a DJ, drinks, prizes and giveaways.
Horizon has "Illusion Fusion" thats
fun for the whole family. Cabo Wabo
with live entertainment everynight and
food and drink specials, is cool to check
out.
Watch all the football playoffs
and Super Bowl with the info in the
Lake Tahoe Entertainer and on line at
EntertainerTahoe.com.
And remember, Have Fun, You're in
Tahoe!
Fly Fishing
Here we are within another drought
year and the fishing still hangs on!
Thank goodness for Reservoirs, Lakes
and Tailwaters to keep us fishing. I
would say we all need to do the dance
and get some precipitation going here
soon, the fish need it. Ice Fishing is
becoming a popular sport locally with
ample ice on Reds Lake, Caples Lake
and Silver Lake, you don't need a
lot of equipment and the rewards are
plentiful with great views, good fishing
and you don't have to sit in a hut here
in California, a lawn chair will do. Here
is a list of some of the opportunities and
how they are doing for this month of
January 2014.
East Carson River Fishing Report
The catch and release section
below Hangman’s Bridge: Open for
Winter fishing which will be somewhat
difficult until the March time frame. If
anything, Midges, Baetis and Stones
will be the diet with the occasional
streamer bite on warmer days. right
now it is frozen and not really worth
fishing.
West Carson River Fishing Report
– Closed until Spring… You will see
people fishing on occasion, be nice and
let them know it is closed until the last
Saturday in April.
East Walker River Fishing Report
CA section: Flows are at Winter
minimums with Midges and Baetis
on the menu. Pattern sizes have
gone back to 20s and 22s to keep it
interesting. On occasion the fish will
eat off of the surface but don’t count
on it for now. Cloudy days are worth a
look! Otherwise down and dirty in the
buckets. Streamers will take a fish or
two when presented in a slow fashion.
Nevada section: The Rosachi
ranch is fishing but has ice on the
edges. Best fishing is during the middle
part of the day. Small Baetis nymphs
and midge pupae are working with
the occasional dry take. Attractor dries
used as an indicator will fool them now
and again. The smaller the fly the better
for the next month or so!
Little Truckee River Fishing Report
Still plenty of fish in the system. Look for
fish on the rise if you can get up the road.
Otherwise get your snow machines
ready for winter access. Midges most
of the Winter with occasional Baetis
and Winter Stones. Access for now is
available but will change with snow if
we get it!
Truckee River (Ca) Fishing Report
Above the 267 Bridge: Closed for
the winter!
Year round section (CA) below
267 Bridge. Hit and miss fishing all
winter long. Access will depend on snow
coverage. Midges Mostly all Winter and
looking for Baetis on Cloudy days.
Afternoons will be best as the ice flows
are early in the day. Look for lethargic
fish that might eat!
Truckee River (Nv) Fishing Report
The lower the better as we get
deeper into Winter. Look for good days
when the air temps hit 45F or better.
Midges, Baetis and Streamers!
Guides Available call (530-5418208).
Learn it and Love it! We will be
doing a limited amount of float trips on
the Truckee this Winter, please call for
details.
Tahoe Area Stillwaters
Pyramid Lake - Open and fishing
Victor Babbit
fairly well but mostly from boats and
float tubes. Some fish have been
caught fishing from shore and a few big
ones as well which is great for Winter
season fishing! The fish are eating the
Chubs so look for pods of bait fish and
throw streamers to match! Indicator
fishing has also started with rumor of
a 20 pound fish on a Chironomid. The
patterns have changed and the fishing
continues to impress with numerous
big fish being caught so far this winter.
Don't wait for the spring, fish now and
get the big ones!
Caples Lake - Ready to go with
great Ice Conditions. A few larger
fish have been caught early this year.
Fish close to the Dam or Spillway with
Kastmasters, Worms or Power Bait!
Red Lake Fishing Report: Ice
is ready to go with numerous anglers
fishing along the Dam area. A few larger
Lahonton Cutts up to 4 pounds have
been landed and A few Brookies. Fish
with Kastmasters, Worms and Power
Bait!
Silver Lake fishing Report Silver is fishing similarly to Caples.
Kastmasters, worms and Power Bait.
Get out and fish, the season never
ends around here!
Comedy From The Mountain
New Year, new dreams (basically
the same ones that didn’t materialize
from the prior year) and some snow. I
don’t ask (okay, beg) for much just the
basics but yes, it would be nice bringing
in the New Year with something that’s
supposed to be associated with the
season. Other than that I’m happy to
say that as of January 15 both the
Improv and myself have been up here
13 years. When I mentioned that onair a long time listener called in to say,
“Feels like 40.” Ah Tahoe keepin’ it
humble with sarcasm and making one
feel both well grounded and reminding
me that no one is really that special.
But c’mom......13 years is the longest
that any revue has been up here so
hoping to continue that trend and
success this year.
One of the reasons we’ve been
successful is the choice of talent that
is booked up here and having Mark
Pitta here this month is one of those
reasons. Pitta is a bay area boy having
come up the same time as Robin
Williams, Kevin Pollack, Bob Sarlatte
and Dana Carvey (to name but a mere
few). Pitta has appeared on “The
Tonight Show,” “3rd Rock From the
Sun,” “Mad About You,” Fox’s “Totally
Hidden Video,” “Comedy Central” and
many others. When he came back to
the City by the Bay he was tapped
as the entertainment reporter for the
fledgling FOX affiliate, KTVU Channel
2 (seen here on channel 11 on cable).
He did that for a while until he got fed up
with having to get up weekdays at 4am
(oh man can I relate to that). Despite
all of his accomplishments I think
his biggest happens every Tuesday
night at The Throckmorton Theatre
in Mill Valley. That’s right. Tuesday
nights it’s comedy night with ‘Pitta
& Friends’ and every Tuesday that
theater is packed. Packed with some
of the biggest names in showbiz. Pitta
(as we all call him) has made a very
good name for himself having toured
with so many great acts that include
Paul Anka, Howie Mandel and Dana
Carvey. He has great improvisational
skills occasionally sitting in with the
famed improvisational group, The
Groundlings when he was living in
southern California. Mark’s other
greatest passion (outside of comedy)
is baseball and like myself celebrated
big time when our San Francisco
Giants won the World Series. Soon,
soon. Working with Pitta it’s Suli
McCullough. Suli is a brilliant and
gifted writer and has written for
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in
addition to big name acts such as
the time when Oscar winning actor/
comedian Jaime Foxx tapped Suli to
write material for him when he guest
hosted Saturday Night Live. See them
both January 8th through the 12th.
He’s on my morning radio show
every Thursday with his segment,
“Graham’s Crackers” and we toured
together in Iraq and Kuwait entertaining
the troops. Who is this guy? Graham
Elwood. Graham honed his comedy
skills all over the country (and later
overseas) starting out in Chicago doing
clubs and colleges that paved the way
for his unique style that would get him
into headlining stratus pretty quickly.
Graham’s been in several very funny
feature-length documentaries which
include Doug Benson’s “Super High
Me” and his own project, “Hello Junkie”
which received very nice reviews when
ir screened at the Sundance Film
Festival. On television you’ve seen him
on Comedy Central, USA Network’s
“Strip Poker,” “The Test” (on the F/X
Network_ and on “The Late Late Show”
on CBS. He’s a favorite and we’re glad
to have him up so early in the new year
too. And working with Graham it’s Annie
Lederman. Annie made her debut here
last year and she is definitely one to
get noticed. A little edgy for some Annie
Howie Nave
should do well with the snowboarding
crowd the week she is here which is
January 15th through the 19th.
Bobby Collins returns with
Ahmed Bharoocha January 22nd
through the 26th. An incredible line-up
having a seasoned veteran (Collins)
with a guy who just started breaking
out and getting a lot of attention with
his unique style of comedy. Ahmed
has a lot to draw from his father being
a devout Muslim his mother a devout
Catholic. No wonder Ahmed decided
to get into the comedy arena it was
just natural. Collins is without a doubt a
perennial favorite up here and his deadon observations about the everyday
human condition is hilarious because
he can find the funny in what others
might dismiss as a mundane, everyday
occurrence and turn it into a hilarious
subject matter.
Howie Nave is the host/emcee/
manager of The Improv @ Harveys
every Wednesday through Sunday
and also hosts his own morning show
(“Howie’s Morning Rush”) on KRLT
93-9 The Lake M-F 6-10am which
also streams online so you can log on
anywhere all over the planet and catch
Howie’s radio show. He also writes
a weekly comedy column for Action
Magazine. You can follow him on
