up-to-date - Thermoflor
up-to-date Botanical garden for the palace gardens in Ankara Some time ago we built a summer residence in Istanbul for the Turkish President Gül. We have now completed a similar project in Ankara: a two-storey building with an area of 1,000 square metres comprising a greenhouse for growing the presidential household’s organic vegetables, offices and a storage area for machines. Foreword Second phase of Bents under construction This edition of our Up to Date pays plenty of attention to projects of satisfied customers: the Smeets brothers of the Maastricht branch of the Dutch Intratuin chain of garden centres and Alain van Vliet of VV Plantes. Satisfied customers are our best ambassadors: they give objective assessments of their cooperation with Thermoflor. Bents Garden Centre is a household name in the surroundings of Manchester. The family company combines a garden centre with large-scale catering facilities: its Food Hall attracts thousands of visitors a day. Last year They are also able to explain how Thermoflor makes a difference: ‘within the budget, fast, short communication lines with the project leaders, close involvement and always sticking to the agreements made’. That’s what we want to be: a building partner that thinks along with you and realises your project from A to Z, a partner you can trust 100%. “The Minister would appreciate it if the Dutch builders Thermoflor could also attend the visit to the botanical garden.” Customer satisfaction can have great consequences ... Gertjan Grimbergen NEWSLETTER OF THERMOFLOR - NR.16 - SPRING 2014 A tea garden adds an attractive finishing touch to the high-class building in which the presidential couple can now receive their guests in style. Other government organisations and wealthy private persons are also very interested in this concept. Ambassadors At the time this edition of Up to Date went to press we had an unexpected telephone call from the Dutch Embassy in Turkey. In June the Dutch Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation will be visiting Turkey. Part of the visit will take place in the botanical garden that we built in Turkey. DIVISION OF grimbergen RELIABLE BUILDERS SINCE 1877 we built a new area for the transhipment of plants here. Phase II involves the construction of a visually attractive retail area with an office, which will have a total area of 3,500 square metres and will be based on sustainable principles. Paul and Mark Smeets: “We are terribly proud of our new shop, which has been built within the budget. As the project’s main contractor, Thermoflor has done a wonderful job, from the very first post right through to the building’s completion.” Flexible glass? Yes indeed! We are using cold-curved triple glazing to create a unique glass structure for the atrium of the new sustainable head office of the engineering company Fluor in the Dutch town of Hoofddorp. The structure is based on our successful Thermoflor Excellent profile system, offering solutions for a wide range of glass structures in utility construction. The glass plates measuring 180 by 300 cm have been slightly curved for the atrium (see the facing page). The 30-metre roof with sun screens has been installed at a height of 20 metres. We built the eye-catching glass atrium with a curtain wall connecting the old and new buildings. The curtain wall is made of triple glazing. The roof consists of a coated steel and aluminium structure with insulating glass that can be walked on incidentally. Follow us on social media: thermoflor jewel of the south of the Netherlands Last March the brand-new branch of the Intratuin chain of garden centres in Maastricht opened its doors to the public. An impressive modern building in which Intratuin offers its customers an exciting experience in an attractive ambiance. The owners Paul and Mark Smeets had for some time been looking for a suitable location to expand their activities. The municipal authorities of Maastricht eventually granted them the go-ahead to start building at a site close to their former establishment, after which we built their state-of-the-art garden centre in a turnkey project. Zeist in a new light Expansion of the town hall in Zeist (NL): the main contractor Volker Wessels has erected a modern new structure next to the existing historical building. Intratuin Maastricht: @gardencenters Thermoflor B.V Mezzanine A striking sight on entering the garden centre is the large open area containing a mezzanine floor that can be reached via a double moving walkway. The mezzanine floor accommodates a garden café that can seat 185 visitors, a covered roof patio and large homefurnishing departments. Flexible routing A special feature of this establishment is the flexible routing that guides shoppers to the various departments in a relaxed manner. They can take the long route via the unheated greenhouse, head straight for the garden café or just pop into the pet department for a new supply of dog food. It’s all possible with this concept, which makes this shop extra customer-friendly. Sustainable LED lighting, insulating materials and facilities for collecting water give this Intratuin branch a sustainable character, expressing the Smeets brothers’ corporate social responsibility. Ever more entrepreneurs are opting for turnkey construction. And not without reason, because erecting a new building is a complex process involving many different factors. Thermoflor has many years’ experience in successfully realising turnkey projects. From practical experience we know that such projects offer principals major advantages. Building a new garden centre calls for a lot of time and attention on the part of entrepreneurs. Their existing establishments almost always remain open for business during the building work. Giving up full control of the entire process means that the entrepreneurs can continue to spend all the time they need on their own business. J.Karlson (N) 3200 m2 Greenhouse for the cultivation of tulips A wholesale centre with a retail atmosphere for a ‘Dutch’ Frenchman Alain van Vliet is a French entrepreneur with roots in the Dutch Westland horticultural region. He commissioned the construction of a remarkable cash & carry organisation combined with propagation areas in the town of Hyères in the south of France. VV Plantes is a unique concept by French standards: a wholesale centre with the appearance of an attractive garden centre. Its main target groups are small garden centres, professional gardeners and regional florists. They are offered a wide range of products, from Mediterranean houseplants and garden plants to decoration materials. Some of the houseplants come from the Netherlands, others are grown in VV Plantes’ own nursery. Focus on experience Alain van Vliet also looked to the Pays-Bas for his new wholesale centre. We were asked to create a building with a much stronger focus on experience than you usually find in wholesale centres. This makes VV Plantes a centre with a real retail atmosphere: stylish and tasteful. Behind the impressive front wall comprising coated curved trusses the building has an area of no less than 7,300 m². “Thermoflor has created a beautiful building that will meet VV Plantes’ requirements for many years“ And what are we going to build the next six months: Intratuin Breda (NL) Refurbishment of the front wall Tuincentrum de Boet (NL) 1500 m2 Refurbishment of the entrance and front wall Multifunctional layout The building, based on a design created by Thermoflor, has a multifunctional layout. The entrance gives way to the cash-and-carry for the customers, which comprises three separate departments: a heated greenhouse, an unheated greenhouse and an outdoor area with shade screens. The 12.80-metre wide-span greenhouse has sandwich panels. Famifarm (FL) 2500 m2 Greenhouse for the cultivation of herbs PT Creations (NL) 2650 m2 Processing area Intratuin Enschede (NL) 7500 m2 Renovation of the (un)heated greenhouses Extra attention was paid to the climate conditions along the coast in the south of France. Air-conditioning installations on the roof guarantee a pleasant indoor climate, and the propagation areas are specially equipped for intermittent irrigation. Villa Verde, Tollevast (F) 3200 m2 Garden centre Behind the cash-and-carry is a logistic area intended for processing large orders. Coppelmans Oss (NL) 5200 m2 Garden Centre We were responsible for designing and building the new structure, and also for its climate control and water technology, which were efficiently incorporated in the design. Plantagen, Skedsmo (N) 450 m2 Roofing of the outdoor retail area Marga van Vliet and her son Alain van Vliet, who now runs VV Plantes. Forest Lodge Farnham (UK) 380 m2 Extension of the restaurant Another advantage is that they have a single contact for all their questions. With a turnkey project, the various risks involved in construction are moreover no longer spread out over several parties. As the main contractor, Thermflor reminds subcontractors of their obligations. This also makes turnkey construction very appealing. We take full responsibility for all the work, from the civil engineering right through to the finishing touches to the interior decoration.
