Children’s television programs have been
a part of Australian television culture
since it began in the 1950s. Parents who
grew up in this era may recall their
favourite characters and programs –
some of which have stood the test of
time to entertain and educate whole
new generations of children.
The long-standing success and
popularity of such programs is due largely
to the quality of performing artists and
production staff who work on them and
the creative minds behind them. Their
contribution is recognised in five new
stamps featuring four of the best-loved
Australian children’s television programs
– perennial favourites Mr Squiggle,
Here’s Humphrey and Play School and
relative newcomer Bananas in Pyjamas.

Letter to Readers
Dear Collector,
Welcome to our new look Stamp Bulletin. After the
success of our Australia 99 Souvenir Edition we felt
inspired to revisit the overall look and feel of the
Bulletin, and we trust you will enjoy the result.
It has always been our aim for Australian stamps
to reflect the diversity and vibrancy of the nation and
the issues covered here are no exception.
Television began in Australia in 1956 and has had
a profound effect on our popular culture. One area in
which Australia has consistently produced world class
programming is the field of children’s television. An
entire generation of Australians has grown up with
the four very popular children’s television programs
featured in our May issue. We want these stamps to
be seen as a formal recognition of the excellence of
Australian children’s television, and of the performers
and producers who have made Australia a world leader
in this field.
Sport is another dynamic part of our culture and
this year, as the centenary of Test Rugby in Australia,
we celebrate the achievements and spirit of the game.
Four stamps will be issued to commemorate the event
in June – shortly before the centenary test match to
be played against England.
We also celebrate the centenary of the Perth Mint
with beautiful gold embossed foil stamps featuring the
original sovereign issued by the Mint.
To soothe the nerves after so much action, our July
issue continues the Nature of Australia – Coastal
definitives, shown through beautiful illustrations of the
coastline and creatures of Fraser Island.
As I said, we live in a wonderfully diverse nation –
wouldn’t you agree?
Until next time,

Bananas in Pyjamas is the flagship for
the Australian Broadcasting Corporation
(ABC) television network. It is sold to
over 36 broadcasters and has enjoyed
unprecedented success in the United
States, Asia and Latin America. The series
is based around the song of the same
name written by Carey Blyton (Enid
Blyton’s nephew) in 1967 and published
in a book titled “A Book of Nonsense”.
The Bananas – B1 and B2 – are
mischievous twins who cannot resist
playing tricks on their Teddy friends Amy,
Lulu and Morgan and the enterprising
Rat in a Hat.
Mr Squiggle (ABC) is a man from
the moon whose nose is a pencil.
Children send in their ‘squiggles’ which
Mr Squiggle takes and, within minutes,
turns into a drawing. Many of today’s
parents grew up with Mr Squiggle and
their children are now also watching it.
Other characters in Mr Squiggle are
Blackboard, Gus the Snail, Bill the
Steamshovel and the ‘host’ Rebecca.
Mr Squiggle celebrates his 40th
birthday in 1999.

Play School (ABC) is a pre-school show
whose characters are toys, teamed with
presenters. Commencing in 1966, this
long-running children’s program has been
hosted over the years by a number of wellknown Australian actors and relies on sets
made from all the odds and ends found in
homes. More than 80 per cent of children
up to the age of four watch Play School.
The Play School stamps are designed as
a pair and convey the essential nature of
Play School – a place where presenters
introduce children to the world through
creative play.

Here’s Humphrey (Channel 9) is a preschool program which appeals
to both little children and their parents,
many of whom may have watched
Humphrey B. Bear’s debut in Adelaide
in May 1965. Humphrey is a perennial
four-year-old who doesn’t speak, rather
communicating through actions
interpreted by the ‘hosts’ or friends
who play with him on the show. He has
won two Logie Awards and was given a
Citizen of the Year Award at the 1994
Australia Day celebrations for his charity
work. Here’s Humphrey is seen in the
UK, parts of Europe, South East Asia
and New Zealand and debuted on
the PBS public television network in
the United States last year.

AAT MAWSONÕS HUTS
Eighty-five years of exposure to harsh
Antarctic conditions had virtually
destroyed the historic baltic pine huts
built by Sir Douglas Mawson’s team as
the base for their 1911–14 Australasian
Antarctic Expedition (AAE). It was from
this Cape Denison camp that the men of
the AAE spent two years exploring the
frozen continent’s unknown interior and
that Mawson earned his status as one of
the giants of the heroic age of Antarctic
exploration.
Ongoing conservation work for
Mawson’s Huts began in 1962 and the
AAP Mawson’s Huts Foundation was
established to ensure that these unique
buildings are conserved in perpetuity
for the Australian people.
45c stamps
The first of the se-tenant 45c stamps
shows Mawson as a young man on the
eve of his departure for the Antarctic, the
vessel in which the expedition sailed and
an architectural drawing of the main hut.

evokes the name given to Cape Denison –
‘Home of the Blizzard’ and the windiest
place on earth.
90c stamp
Huskies played a key part in the
exploration of Australia’s Antarctic
territory. This photograph was taken by
Mawson’s companion Xavier Mertz who,
along with Belgrave Ninnis, perished
during an expedition – leaving Mawson
to survive a lone trek across the icecap. A
Memorial Cross was erected on the site in
memory of Mertz and Ninnis.
$1.35 stamp
Work undertaken by the conservation
team included new roof cladding,
rehanging the front door and repairing
the structural timbers inside the hut.
Computer technology was an integral part
of the latest expedition to Cape Denison
in 1997–98.

About 120 Australians spend a full year
at one of the four ANARE stations.
They are cut off from the rest of the
world for up to eight months, until the
arrival of supply ships at each station.
These people use the majority of
Australian Antarctic Territory stamps,
such as the four stamps issued last year
which illustrated the range of transport
used in the AAT.
Because of space limitations on
Antarctic supply ships, and restricted
facilities for processing large volumes
of mail at ANARE stations, no
philatelic mail is sent to the Antarctic.
Orders and covers submitted for
postmarking are processed in Australia.
Mail orders for 1998 AAT first day
covers showing the supply ship arrival
dates at each of the stations are now
being accepted. The first days of issue
are determined by the arrival of supply
ships at each station.

1999
This year marks the centenary of
Australia’s oldest operating mint,
the Perth Mint, which was established
on 20 June 1899 as a branch of Britain’s
Royal Mint.
To commemorate the occasion,
Australia Post will release a single stamp
featuring both sides of an 1899 gold
sovereign. Identical to sovereigns minted
at other branches of the Royal Mint of
London, the obverse features a portrait
of Queen Victoria, and the reverse the
legendary Saint George and the Dragon.
The coin faces on the Perth Mint
Centenary stamps are gold embossed –
adding the reflective quality of real gold
to the sovereigns.
The Perth Mint, initially established
to refine the gold mined from Western
Australia’s Kalgoorlie gold fields,
produced sovereigns and half-sovereigns
before minting ceased in 1931. Between
1922 and 1983 it produced Australian
legal tender coinage.
The Perth Mint produces several
bullion coin and coin jewellery products,
as well as numismatic products such as the
popular gold and silver coins in the
Sydney 2000 Olympic coin program.

ugby is said to have been invented
in 1823 by schoolboys at Rugby
School, England when a boy called
William Webb Ellis picked up a soccer
ball and ran with it – quickly followed by
his fellow students!
This stamp issue commemorates
100 Years of Test Rugby in Australia. The
first game of official test rugby played
by an Australian team against an
international opponent was at the Sydney
Cricket Ground on 24 June 1899. More
than 28,000 people watched Australia
defeat the British Isles (known as the
British Lions) 13–3.
The visit by the Great Britain team,
which won all but three of its 21 matches
on the tour, excited public interest and
gave rugby a clear advantage over its
rival codes.
Rugby became quite popular in
Sydney – where a Rugby Union had
already formed to bring order to the
clubs – and Brisbane in the 1880s. By
the turn of the century some clubs paid
their players, and these clubs eventually
formed their own code of Rugby, known
as Rugby League. Rugby Union players
were not paid until three years ago.
Today Rugby Union is played in more
than 140 countries. The Rugby World
Cup, played every four years, is the
third largest sporting event in the world
in terms of revenue and viewing audience
behind the Olympics and the Soccer
World Cup. Australia will have its chance
to host the Rugby World Cup in 2003.
The stamps will be issued on 8 June
prior to the Centenary Test to be played
against England at Sydney’s Homebush
Stadium on 26 June 1999. The teams
will compete for the Cook Cup, named
after Captain James Cook, of which
Australia is the current holder. Since
its inauguration in 1997 the Cup
has been contested four times with
Australia winning three times and one
match drawn.
Celebrating contemporary Test
Rugby, the stamps feature illustrative
images of the Wallabies against four
other nations. Each stamp shows a
different aspect of the game: a try, a
lineout, a kick and a pass.

A test match is defined as any game
in which an Australian team plays against
another country whilst wearing the
Wallaby jumper. ‘The Wallabies’ was
voted in as the national team’s name in
1908. Selection in a team to play for
Australia overseas has always been the
greatest reward for a rugby player, and a
tour of Britain the most eagerly sought
honour. The tests are traditionally
recognised as the most significant
component of the game.

Windjammer postmarker
Port Victoria SA 5573 will have a new
permanent pictorial postmarker from
28 May. The postmarker will feature a
Windjammer sailing ship. Port Victoria
was a common stop for Windjammers
carrying wheat between 1879 and 1949.
The last Windjammer, Passat, left on
1 June 1949.
In retrospect …
A permanent postmarker introduced
for the 125th anniversary of the
Township of Poowong was incorrectly
noted as being for the 126th
anniversary in the last issue of the
Bulletin. The postmarker became
available on 17 April.
The Irish Polly Woodside stamp featured
on the Maritime Links – Australia and
Ireland joint miniature sheet was
reported in the March–April Stamp
Bulletin as being 30.55 mm x 30 mm.
In fact, the stamp is 30 mm x 40.27 mm.
The March 22 Olympic Torch stamp
release was incorrectly listed in the
March–April Stamp Bulletin as having
a special feature sheetlet of ten. It has a
sheet layout of two panes of 25 only.
ii
The Windjammer 50 Committee
will have a souvenir envelope featuring
their logo, with the new postmark and
the four Sailing Ships of Australia stamps
(released 19 March) for a cost of $5.00.
Orders are to be sent direct to:
Mrs W Dutschke
PO Box 38
Port Victoria SA 5573.
Name changes
Name changes have occurred for some
of the printers and paper stocks used in
the production of Australian stamps.
CPL has become Tullis Russell, Harrisons
is now De La Rue, and SNP Cambec is

of Fraser Island, located on the north
eastern coast of Australia.

he coastal region of Fraser Island is featured in the third
Nature of Australia series of stamps which began with
Eucalypt Forests (the Mountain Ash forests of Victoria) and was
followed by Wetlands (Kakadu). Australia is the world’s largest
island, bounded by 32,000 kilometres of coastline - one of the
longest and most beautiful in the world. Located on the northeastern coast of Australia, approximately 350km north of
Brisbane, Fraser Island was listed as a World Heritage site in
1992 and is one of Australia’s and the world’s outstanding
natural areas. The world’s largest sand island, taking over
700,000 years to form, Fraser Island has been the home of the
Batdjala people for thousands of years. It takes its name from
Eliza Fraser, a shipwreck victim who spent some time on the
island in 1836. The 65c stamp features Loggerhead Turtles
(Caretta caretta) and a Baler (Melo amphora), also known as
a Melon Shell. Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are
shown on the 75c stamp; the shell is a Zebra Volute (Zebramoria
zebra). The $1.05 stamp features the White-bellied Sea Eagle
(Haliaeetus leucogaster) and a common shell, Campbell’s Stromb
(Strombus vittatus campbelli). The $1.20 stamps show the coastal
habitat of Fraser Island with a Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus)
in flight. On the right stamp is a Checkerboard Helmet Shell
(Phalium areola), while the other shell is an interior view of a
Chambered Nautilus (Nautilus pompilius).

part of life on Christmas Island,
celebrating its multicultural heritage
and people.
Last year the children of the Christmas
Island District High School were asked to
illustrate their favourite festivals, and five
of these were chosen to feature in a special
issue of four stamps and a first day cover.
A dragon from the Community Arts
Festival by Fong Jason, aged 10, and a Red
Crab clutching an Easter egg by Siti
Zamaria Zainal, aged 11, are depicted on
the se-tenant 45c stamps. The
Community Arts Festival is an integral
part of the Territory Week Community
Festival which celebrates the Island’s
formation as an Australian territory.
The Hungry Ghost Festival is shown
on the 85c stamp by Tan Diana, aged 8.
This festival culminates in a special ghost
feeding ritual to avoid the malice of
despairing ghosts.
Anwar Ramlan, aged 10, designed the
$1.20 stamp which features the Hari Raya
Haji festival – marking the conclusion
of the annual pilgrimage to the holy city
of Mecca.
The first day cover, ‘Territory Day

A set of five aerogrammes celebrating our
National Parks will be released on 15 July.
The Litchfield National Park in the
Northern Territory features many natural
wonders. The Dingo (Canis lupus dingo) is
a wild form of domestic dog thought to
have been brought into Australia by the
Aborigines thousands of years ago.
Tasmania’s Wild Rivers National Park
takes in the Franklin and the Gordon
Rivers. The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus
anatinuscan) can be found throughout the
eastern seaboard of Australia.
South Australia’s Nullarbor National
Park borders the Great Australian Bight.
The cliffs are a spectacular whalewatching site with nearly 100 Southern
Right Whales (Eubalaena australis)
arriving each winter.
The Grampians National Park
straddles a sandstone ridge of mountains
in Victoria. The Peregrine Falcon (Falco
peregrinus) is one of the most widespread
of all birds in the world with Australia as
its stronghold.
Crater Lakes National Park in
northern Queensland contains two lakes,
Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham,
surrounded by rainforest. The Green
Python (Morelia viridis) has bright yelloworange young and is rare in Australia.

or products you prefer. You may create a standing order for new stamp issues, or for a product
type, such as for first day covers. For more information fill out the relevant boxes on the mail order
form and send it to the Australian Philatelic Bureau. This form can also be used if you wish to be

From this issue of the Stamp Bulletin
forward, you will note the Standing Order
and Mail Order forms have been combined
to produce one easy to understand and easy
to fill out form. The combined form still
enables you to request further information
about a Standing Order, update your
mailing address or request your mailing
address to be changed without asking you
to fill in a separate form. We trust you will
find this new form much more useful.
The new form will be located on
the back of the mail order sheet in
each Bulletin.
Also, please note that the minimum
credit card charge has changed to $10.00.
This is due to increased merchant fees
charged to Australia Post for every order
processed under $5.00.
◆ POSTAGE AND HANDLING CHARGES
A postage and handling charge of $3.00
applies to each of the Australian Stamp
Catalogue, Sydney 2000 Olympic Coin
Collection or Numismatic ranges, shown
on the previous pages. This charge
applies only once for each category.
Therefore, if you purchase an item from
each category, you pay $9.00 for postage
and handling. Whether you order one or
several items from a category, you only pay
the $3.00 postage and handling charge
once. When you order items which are
from two categories, then you pay $6.00
postage and handling.
A complete list of issues on sale is not
included here. Details of current issues
may be obtained from the Australian
Philatelic Bureau (Freecall 1800 331 794).

National Philatelic Centre The Post Master Gallery
Posted Aboard R.M.S. Titanic
7 April - 27 June 1999
The tragic drama of the R.M.S. Titanic has
long captivated the world’s imagination,
but few people remember that the Titanic
was more than a luxurious vessel –
as the ‘R.M.S.’ denotes, she was a Royal
Mail Ship.
Shortly after the Titanic’s collision
with an iceberg on the night of 14 April
1912, the five postal clerks assigned to the
ship and a steward, Albert Tessinger, tried
desperately to save 200 bags of registered
mail by dragging these to the upper decks.
The mail bags were located very close to
the fatal gash in the Titanic’s hull.
The five postal clerks – three
Americans and two British – were among
those who perished when the Titanic sank
two hours and forty minutes after the
collision. The entire cargo, including
3,364 bags of mail, was lost.
‘Posted Aboard R.M.S. Titanic’ will
include artefacts and objects from the
collections of the Smithsonian Institution,
the Public Records Office (UK) and from
private individuals. No objects from the
wreck site are in this exhibition, in
accordance with the ‘sanctuary principle’
which respects the wreck site as the final
resting place of 1,523 souls.
The exhibit focuses on the mail ship
and its Sea Post crew. Video footage taken
four kilometres below the icy North
Atlantic will be used to show the
mailroom as it now appears, including
views of the Titanic’s mailbags, still in
the mailroom after nearly nine decades.
The exhibition is from the
Smithsonian Institution, National Postal
Museum, Washington, USA.
