Who’s afraid of a little cold?
♫♪ Come sing with us! ♪ ♫
We’ve have started a Senior Center Choir, named “THE
GOLDEN OLDIES” and would like to invite
EVERYONE to join in the fun. Yes, even you who says “I
can’t sing” but you know that you love to sing around the
house! Singing is great for better memory, for better
breathing, for posture, and for socialization! We will be
practicing twice a month to start, on the second and fourth
Mondays at
10 am--11ish February 8 & 22.
Not the resourceful and determined members of the
Eaton Rapids Senior Center! Sooo… while
Punxsutawney Phil is looking for his shadow, let’s celebrate with some ice-cream after a comfort food lunch!
We will be having an
ice-cream “social” for
dessert on Tuesday,
February 2nd. Join
us for lunch and then
some ice cream!
Lunch is Beef and
Noodles. Let us
know if you will be here, please!
Weather Reminder:
If you would like
to know what to
do for a loved
one to help them stay at home rather than in a care
facility, come down to the Center on Tuesday, February 23rd at 12:30pm for our lunch program titled “Safely
Stay in Your Home” sponsored by Right At Home.
There will be a variety of subjects and speakers: Legal
advice regarding Estates & Trusts, someone for home
modifications that might need to be made, Hospice
care, and more. This program will cover many different
aspects of remaining at home, so if you have questions
please join us. This event is free to everyone.
When the Eaton Rapids Public
Schools are cancelled due to
weather, our morning activities MAY
be cancelled at the Center. We will
make a determination in the late-morning to determine
if lunch, afternoon and evening activities, such as Bingo,
will be cancelled due to weather. Call (517) 663-2335 to
check!
Please, be extra careful during the
wintery weather when you are
walking across parking lots and
entering or exiting your vehicle.

Volunteers needed!
If you are willing and able, we can always use some help for
our monthly dinners at the Center.
We need cakes baked for the chicken dinners and pie bakers for the Swiss Steak Dinner.
Don’t forget to make your
lunch reservations!
It’s easy--sign up in person or by calling the
Center at 663-2335. Suggested Lunch Donation:
$4 members and $5 for non-members
THANK YOU!
We also need help with the dinner preparation and for kitchen clean up after a dinner. There is a sign up sheet at the
front desk.
Wish List
Suggestions needed!
We all love to be entertained, so if you have an idea for a
new program let us know! Tell us about any bands, choirs,
dance troupes, magicians, clowns, etc. If you would like to
have a movie day or game day, tell us. Maybe you would
like to be the entertainer and get a group together to perform? Let us know!
We are so thankful for the entertainers that we already
have, but sometimes our schedules don’t work out so it
would help to have more available.

Trivia Answer
Crocus sativus pronounced [SAF-ruhn] is the world's most expensive
spice. Saffron are the stigmas from the crocus sativus flower, there
are only 3 stigmas (referred to as saffron threads) per flower. Saffron
is hand harvested so you can understand why it is so prized and so
expensive. It takes about 13,125 threads to weigh one ounce.

The Arrow and the Song
I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

My Friends
by Clara Squires
I have many friends that understand,
In my bookcase there they stand,
Some are well marked and pages torn,
But they are my friends, tho slightly worn.
ERSC Second Annual Book Sale
Saturday, February 27th
Lines underscored, they have served me well,
When in my search they were there to tell,
All the things I want to know,
10am - 3pm
Lots of titles to choose from!
Over the years they have helped me grow.
The Senior Center
Library-We have many
different authors and a
variety of genres to
choose from, there is
something for everyone.
This is a poem from our
very own book,
“Poems From the
Heart”, which was written by local seniors in
1989. We also have
cookbooks written by
local seniors, be sure to
check them out!
Dave Kaiser is one of those guys who always jumps in to
help, which is a wonderful person to have around! If you need
something moved, if you need someone to run to the store, if
you need some
GREAT pancakes
made, or maybe you
need someone who is
an expert bingo caller-Dave is your man!
(Just don’t feed him
chicken!)
A wonderful offer
is still available
from Laura DeLong
Realty--if you sell
your home through
Laura, she will donate her commission from the sale to the Eaton Rapids Senior Center. Call Laura at (517)719-8021 to discuss selling your home. Her office is located at 131 S
Main St. in downtown Eaton Rapids.
We want Dave to
know how much we
appreciate all that he
does for the Eaton
Rapids Senior Center!
Laura has always been a great supporter of the Eaton
Rapids Senior Center. We appreciate that very much!

Lunch Partners
What is a Lunch Partner? Lunch Partners donate $50 to help
pay for our Monday-Tuesday-Thursday lunches at the Center.
This enables us to use the money we would normally spend on
that meal in other ways, like paying bills, which is very helpful.
We’ve had some wonderful Lunch Partners this year, like Eaton
County Commissioner Jeremy Whittum, Glenn Buege Buick
GMC, Janell Bush, Voss Insurance Okemos, and Mae Locke.
We thank them all! If you would like to be a Lunch Partner, just
let us know.

February 2016 Member Spotlight
Gwen Albright
Gwen raised 3 daughters and lives in Eaton Rapids, but there
is so much more to this thoughtful and caring lady. She is
always smiling and lending a hand. She helps set up for
our monthly dinners in the morning, and then works them in
the evening, too.
Gwen is an “active” member who comes for exercise class 3
times a week and plays Wii bowling twice a week. She is also
busy helping to start a Senior Choir. We are so lucky to have
Gwen as a part of our Center! Thank you, Gwen, for all you
do!
Advisory Board Update: The Senior Center Advisory Board has been working hard to bring new events and activities
to the Center. The board consists of Ruth Gooch, Phyllis Davidson, Joan Dempsey, Mary Marrietta, Don Colestock, Bernie and
Pat Hartley, and Faye Perfitt, along with our director, Deb Malewski. This creative group comes up with new activities for us to do. Some things that they are planning for this year include the upcoming Book Sale (Feb 27), a trip to
the Jiffy Mix plant in Chelsea (April 22), Senior Choir (ongoing), Twilight Memories (tentatively in May), and a Rummage Sale on April 30th. If you have any ideas or suggestions for things you would like to do contact a member of the Advisory
Board or see Deb Malewski.
Carleton Mitchell may be almost 95 years old, but he hasn’t forgotten that the way to a
woman’s heart can sometimes be through CHOCOLATE! He works out three times a week
at the Center and quite often brings in tasty things to share. Most recently it was some lovely
Russell Stover Strawberries and Cream candy bars for the members of the exercise group! Last
month it was candy cane chocolate bars. He’s also brought artificial flowers in that look so realistic
many were fooled, thinking they were the “real thing”. We ate some wonderful fresh tomatoes this
past summer that Carleton purchased for the Center. They were delicious! Thank you for being
YOU, Carl! Stay Sweet!

We are officially known as the
“Rocking Chair Deserters” here at the
Eaton Rapids Senior Center. This
name was selected many years ago
by those who started the organization, to represent their attitude that
despite their age they were going to
be active and involved with the community--and leave those stereotypical
rocking chairs behind! Painting by

A special tradition we have at the Center is our monthly
birthday party. It features a beautiful hand decorated cake
that is usually dedicated to someone or something. The
cake is served to the large crowd we generally get for
lunch on the Birthday party days.
You can be the sponsor of one of these cakes--just pick
the month you prefer and let us know who you would like
it to be in honor of or dedicated to.
The cost of the cake is $20. It’s beautifully decorated by
Kristine Hall.
We still have a few months in 2016 with no birthday
cake sponsors. We hope you will consider sponsoring
a cake.

Michigan Poem
It’s winter in Michigan
and the gentle breezes blow
seventy miles an hour
at thirty-five below.
Oh, how I love Michigan
When the snow’s up to my butt.
You take a breath of winter air
and your nose gets frozen shut.
Yes, the weather here is wonderful,
so I guess I’ll hang around,
I could never leave Michigan
‘cause I’m frozen to the ground.
