Newsletter of the Greater Washington Ceili Club J a n u www.gwcc-online.org a Dance to Your Hearts Content in Two Thousand Ten Amazing just how much Irish dancing goes on in the Virginia, DC, and MD area! You can dance just about every day of the week throughout most of the year. Almost every weekend there is at least one ceili and adult Irish dance classes are going on Monday through Saturdays. This ninety minute performance is a professionallycollaborated production which has a cohesive theme expressed through dance, music, and photographic art. The show features the Teelin Irish Dance Company, which is comprised of auditioned dancers, and also includes professional artists. Portraits of Ireland is a must for anyone who appreciates the arts and enjoys live performances. Director Maureen Berry is committed to increasing the number of high quality artistic productions in Maryland, and has successfully met this challenge with Portraits of Ireland. For more information check out……… Live performances will be on March 13th in Frederick and March 20th in Annapolis. All the details are on page 7 of the Upcoming Events listings. We will have a brief preview of this exciting production at our January 24th Ceili at Cherry Hill. Don’t Miss it! [email protected] DANCE NOTES ~ Edie O’Donnell Photos by Paul O’Donnell Rain glittered on the pavement, but did not dampen the spirits of our GWCC members and friends as we gathered at Cherry Hill Park for our annual New Year’s Eve celebration. The path to the door glowed warmly with luminaria, and the hall sparkled with white lights and glowing trees. Our attendees looked wonderful, many in tuxedos and glittery dresses! The tables sparkled, too, with confetti and silver and gold accessories. The decorations were arranged by Jane Twomey, whose special attention to detail always creates a magical environment. Our attendees worked some dessert magic as well; the buffet covered three tables, and truly held something for everyone! The Old Bay Ceili band, nine strong with regulars and guests, also sparkled, giving us their very best reels, polkas and waltzes. Awesome music and good friends…what more could we ask for! We danced a lot of old favorites, with the first set including the Clare Plain Set, the North Kerry and the Connemara Reel. After an attack on that bountiful dessert table, we began the second set with the 16 Hand Reel, followed by the Cashel, the Clare Mazurka and a "just before midnight" waltz. At midnight, we counted down the old year, and celebrated the new year with champagne, noisemakers, and hugs and kisses all around. We finished off the night with a Paris Set and a spirited Clare Lancers to end the evening on a perfect note! In Step As we get closer to St. Patrick’s Day, our outreach events at area seniors' residences begin. If you have never participated in these performances, which are open to all members, and would like to join us, see Edie O’Donnell or Dixie Baker for details. A practice session is scheduled prior to the events. And if that’s not enough dancing for you, don’t forget to come to the GWCC dance classes at the Frost Center in Rockville on Thursday nights. The new session begins January 7, so shake off the winter blues with some spirited dancing! Basics at 7 PM; experienced from 8:00 until 9:30. See Paul O’Donnell for details. SET OF THE MONTH The Set Dance for January is the Aran Set which was recorded by Seamus O. Mealoid on Inis Mor, the largest of the Aran Islands, off the coast from Galway. Connie Ryan taught this set at the Cecil Sharp House, London, in 1992. Mick Mulkerrin also taught the set at the Solihull workshop in June 1995. The reel step is the same as is danced in the South Galway set with only the merest hint of a 'heel' and a little lift, though much less pronounced than in the Clare style. The Polka step is also very flat. Ann Marie Breheny will be teaching it at the January 24th Ceili and dance notes are on page 10. I Love You: A Chick Flick with a Little Something Extra for the Guys There’s no getting around the fact that P.S. I Love You is a chick flick. Guys might like the Irish music. And, they might enjoy the County Wicklow scenery. If they like skinny women, they might also enjoy the scenes where Hilary Swank prances around in her underwear. Beyond that though, this love story is many women’s ideal way to spend a rainy (or snowy) afternoon, accompanied by an afghan and a good cup of tea. Holly Kennedy (Swank) and her Irish husband, Gerry (Gerard Butler), are young marrieds living in In Step Devastated by her loss, Holly can barely cope until, mysteriously, she begins to get messages from Gerry. Gerry doesn’t appear or talk to Holly. But he had some time to prepare for his death, so he planned various activities, accompanied by written notes, for Holly, designed to help her go on after he died. There’s her 30th birthday for which he pre-ordered a cake that comes with taped instructions for celebrating. Eventually there’s a trip to Ireland, so she can visit his parents and the land where they fell in love. While her friends and family worry that Gerry’s letters, all including the post script “I love you,” will keep Holly tied to the past, they actually help give her the direction she needs for a future without him. While P.S. I Love You is a feel good movie, parts of it are implausible, predictable, and even cliché. For someone who has employment woes, Holly dresses very stylishly. The notes show up exactly when she needs them. There’s a guy who wants to “make it better” for her. And Gerry’s wake is held in the bar owned by her mother (Kathy Bates). However, parts of it are right on, especially when her friends’ lives move on and they marry or become pregnant, while she’s still stuck in her grief. Originally set in Ireland, screenwriter/director Richard LaGravenese adapts the story for an IrishAmerican audience; the soundtrack includes music by Flogging Molly and the Pogues. The original novel by the same name was written by fresh-out-of university Cecilia Ahern, daughter of Bertie Ahern, the former Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister). In a DVD bonus feature Ahern discusses how she has always written, but was driven to pen her international best seller during nocturnal periods of inspiration. Even though the 2007 film got mostly mediocre reviews, I’d give it a thumbs up. Length: 2 hours, 7 minutes Bev’s Rating: 3 1/2 stars January 2010 3 GET READY FOR SPRING FLING WEEKEND!! In Step The FSGW Midwinter Festival is a family-friendly extravaganza of music, dance, stories, workshops, and crafts. Held the first Saturday in February -- which is Saturday, February 6, 2010. The annual mid-winter shindig known as the FSGW Mini-Fest will be held at the Takoma Park Middle School, 7611 Piney Branch Road, from noon until 10:30 pm. The Mini-Fest provides a wonderful opportunity to beat the winter blues, visit with friends and neighbors, and be part of some of the finest music and dance that the Washington area has to offer! Once again this year FSGW features two simultaneous all-day dance tracks and seven workshop and performance sites, so find that calendar and save the date! Tickets may be purchased through the website in advance, or at the door. Schedule, ticket information and many wonderful photos of last year’s MiniFest can be found at www.fsg.org. ____________________________________________ GWCC SCHOLARSHIPS GWCC has two scholarships which can be awarded to active club members, in good standing, or to members of their immediate families.
