On behalf of the Organising Committee, it is our great pleasure to invite you to the ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress & 34th ITA General Assembly in Agra, India from 19-25 September, 2008. The Tunnelling Association of India (TAI) and the Organizing Committee of ITA WTC 2008 have prepared various programmes under the theme of Underground Facilities for Better Environment & Safety. The Congress is of interest to individuals, Regulatory Bodies, Government Departments, Public Undertakings, Tunnel Building Contractors and Consultants, Equipment Manufacturers, Technical Research Institutes, Universities and Funding Agencies etc., who are actively involved in the tunnel and other underground construction. I request their participation in various events planned in conjunction with the WTC 2008. The Congress will provide an open forum for exchanging new information and ideas related to tunnel and underground space-utilization and is being jointly organized by the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA-AITES), Tunnelling Association of India (TAI) and and Central Board of Irrigation & Power (CBIP). I also extend a cordial invitation to all the National Committees and Working Group members of ITA to the 34th General Assembly being organised concurrently. All the agencies involved in tunnel construction including planners, designers, construction firms, consultants and equipment manufacturers are also cordially invited to participate in the exhibition being organized in conjunction with the World Tunnel Congress at Agra. In view of the large scale tunnelling works to be undertaken for Metro rail, Roads and the development of Water Resources/Hydropower Projects in the near future and other underground structures being planned in this country, there is vast scope for agencies within as well as outside the country, to demonstrate their capability either in providing services or equipment by taking part in the Tunnel Exposition 2008.. Once again, anticipating your continued cooperation and active participation for the forthcoming Congress, I look forward to welcome you all at Agra, and hope that your stay and experience here will be memorable. Rakesh Nath Chairman, National Organizing Committee & President, Central Board of Irrigation & Power & Chairperson, Central Electricity Authority 1 Welcome to Agra, India India - The Host Country India is endowed with towering mountain ranges, rolling hills, lofty plateaus and extensive plains which have all played their role in shaping its cultural, economic and political history. The most outstanding characteristic of India, and probably one of its greatest charms, is undeniably, its diversity. India is a country with a sense of individuality and rich heritage; its civilization is unique in vitality and antiquity. It offers the visitors something special everywhere, and in everything. It is a land of treasures, temples, palaces, forts and magnificent scenery. Those seeking footprints of history will find that India has a vast area, where races and cultures have battled and blended, and creating sublime achievements in art, religion and philosophy. Agra 2 The city of Agra, the quintessence of the grand Mughal era, reigns to this day in the public mind as the embodiment of royal grace, imposing architecture and power. Agra is globally renowned as the city of the Taj Mahal. But this royal Mughal city has, in addition to the legendary Taj, many monuments that epitomize the high point of Mughal architecture. No tour to India can be complete without paying a visit to this erstwhile capital of the Mughals and the city of the Taj Mahal, the world’s most beloved monument. With its laidback lifestyle and its immense wealth of architecture, handicrafts and jewellery, Agra is amongst the most remarkable cities of the world. Agra, the city of Taj Mahal, a poem in white marble was built in the 16th century by Emperor Shahjahan as a monument of love. Agra was once the capital of the Mughals and the relics of their glory are scattered all over the city, from the Taj Mahal to the massive Agra Fort, the delicately carved Itmad-ud-Daulah’s tomb to Akbar’s deserted majestic capital Fatehpur Sikri. Agra is India’s best-known destination for tourists. Nowhere has tradition blended with modernity on a scale as evident in New Delhi. Quite unparalleled in its beauty with wide tree-lined avenues and boulevards, green belts, flower covered round – abouts, after all these years, New Delhi still retains its imperialistic hues and colours. Stately lawns and fountains, the colonial edifice of Rashtrapati Bhawan – the residence of the President of India, the sweeping drive from the Bhawan to the India Gate – a monument dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives during World War I. Delhi is what you want it to be – a modern city with life or a city of monuments and history, which has left its legacy in Qutub Minar, Jama Masjid, Red Fort and the bustling bazaar of Chandni Chowk. The ruins of the original Chandela capital stretch over 21 square kilometers, but very little apart from the temples remain VARANASI has been the religious capital of Hinduism since time immemorial. Written records of the Skanda Purana and the Mahabharata mention its existence as long as 3000 years ago. It is probably the oldest living city in India, and one of the world’s most ancient. An ideal base for touring the royal state, the city has the distinction of being the third jewel of India’s “Golden Triangle”. Its main claim to fame is that it is India’s first ‘planned’ city built by the famous 18th century astronomer King Sawai Jai Singh II. The pink city of Jaipur also the capital of the state of Rajasthan is known for its forts and palaces and tales of Rajput Chivalry. It is by far the most colourful region Jaipur Art in India. Surrounded by rugged hills, each crowned by a formidable fort; and beautiful palaces, mansions and gardens dot throughout its precincts. The palaces and forts of yesteryear that were witness to royal processions and splendour are now living monuments, accepted quite naturally into the lifestyles of the people of the “pink city”. Browsing through the markets in Jaipur, where skilled craftsmen display jewellery, paintings, carvings and colourful textiles, is an enjoyable experience for tourists. 16 UDAIPUR – the ‘City of Lakes’ is the capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Mewar, one of the oldest surviving dynasties in the world and was established around 1567 A.D.
