MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR:
LEGACIES MEASURED IN LIVES TOUCHED
T
he close of our first year serving students marks a
significant milestone. Each week was marked by
progress in the many spheres of the academy. We have
celebrated prestigious publications by professors and
grants to benefit everything from studies of groundwater
in the Sierra Nevada to early childhood education plans
to nanotechnology research. We have offered art exhibits,
chances to learn about immigration and labor, free access
to digital books and unmatched student access to our
expert faculty. We have established new collaborations and
partnerships and announced plans to begin educating health care professionals
within the next decade.
The students in our inaugural class have inspired us all. They came with a pioneering spirit and set about building a campus that would meet their needs. They have
an enviable motivation and are clear in their goals and the paths to their goals. They
arrived on campus to find high intellectual expectations and occasionally challenging circumstances, from finances to ongoing construction. But they have more than
met these challenges, in the process bringing our first play to campus, forming
more than 50 clubs and organizations and enlivening our weekends with day-long
celebrations. Their determination promises a brighter future for the Central Valley,
California and the world. We are honored to offer a step along their way.

2005-2006 CHANCELLOR’S ANNUAL REPORT AND HONOR ROLL OF DONORS
MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDATION CHAIR: A SPECIAL YEAR
This report documents many accomplishments that add to the campus experience and enhance
our reputation as a rising research university. Each of these efforts has benefited from the
generosity of our donors and friends, and for that, we enthusiastically thank you.
As I reflect on our year, our most important accomplishment remains the cumulative impact of
UC Merced on all the individuals we have touched. Our students, faculty and staff; the members
of the communities around us; and our esteemed friends and benefactors are the best legacies of
our success. Lives touched are also the best legacies of your thoughtfulness and generosity. May
those who come after you see your kindness reflected in an ever-improving world.
Fiat Lux,
Carol Tomlinson-Keasey
Chancellor
A
t the close of the 2005-06 year, I offer my
congratulations to each member of the
University of California, Merced, Foundation
Board of Trustees, the many generous donors
and friends of the campus, and UC Merced’s
outstanding and dedicated faculty and staff for
making this past year amazingly successful.
We all felt honored to participate in the incredible grand opening and convocation that marked
UC Merced’s official beginning on September 5, 2005. None of us will ever
forget watching the diverse, bright-eyed procession of inaugural students
in their white shirts, marching across the bridge and into the great tent
where the opening ceremonies were held.
Throughout the year, the Foundation Board of Trustees has continued to
increase its role in the financial and general support of the UC Merced
campus. At long last, we were able to hold our meetings on the beautiful
campus that was once little more than a twinkle in our eyes. Today, we
continue to work closely with academic departments and to assist in
building individual, business and political support of the campus.
The end of the first year of UC Merced’s operation culminated with the first-ever graduation and
commencement ceremony. The first graduating class consisted of two undergraduates in Social and
Cognitive Sciences and one graduate student in Environmental Systems. What a wonderful and
unique experience it was to witness their pride in accomplishing their goals and their families’ tears
and smiles as they watched their loved ones receiving the first diplomas awarded by this extraordinary university.
The UC Merced Foundation and the UC Merced campus accomplished a great year, a special year, in
2005-06. We look forward to more and more success in the decades to come.
Sincerely,
Robert W. Carpenter

Private support of UC Merced between July 1, 2005, and June 30, 2006, amounted to $19,677,773.
The charts below illustrate the sources and purposes of gifts gratefully acknowledged by the campus this year.
he University of California system promises every Californian who meets
entrance requirements the opportunity to earn a top-notch education. To
help fulfill that promise, UC Merced educates students to promote a breadth
and depth of understanding, aiming to encourage graduates to continue
learning over a lifetime and contribute to the needs of a changing society. In
the UC system, leading scholars and students study human nature, society and
the natural world. Research now takes place at UC Merced in disciplines from
child development to computerized sensor networks.
Through public service programs and industry partnerships, UC translates
scientific discoveries into practical knowledge and technological innovations.
UC also offers libraries, museums, performing arts, gardens and science

NEW FACULTY, INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS IN SOCIAL SCIENCES, HUMANITIES AND ARTS
T
he numbers speak well for the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (SSHA), proving that the school is growing in
well-planned, measured directions.
Twelve new professors will join the SSHA faculty this fall, reflecting a busy year of recruiting. These new faculty members, in political
science, sociology, anthropology, arts and economics, will drive the diversification and development of the school’s academic offerings.
The school will add two new foreign language programs in the fall of 2006, more evidence of the year-long efforts of the faculty and staff.
UC Merced students can now study Japanese and French as well as Spanish.
Thousands of students on campus and in the surrounding communities are served by the innovative efforts of the Writing Program,
transfer student outreach programs and other efforts of SSHA faculty.
The first two undergraduate degrees from UC Merced were awarded to students in social and cognitive sciences, and students continue to
flock to that major and to the study of world cultures and history. The management major is also attracting many students as the school
nurtures plans for the Gallo School of Management, emphasizing entrepreneurship and new-technology business.
INAUGURAL SPENDLOVE PRIZE MADE POSSIBLE BY DAUGHTER’S GIFT
A
t UC Merced’s Grand Opening Convocation and Celebration on September 5, 2005, Merced native, acclaimed author and Harvard
Law Professor Charles J. Ogletree was named the first recipient of the Alice and Clifford Spendlove Prize in Social Justice,
Diplomacy and Tolerance. Ogletree was also a keynote speaker at the convocation.
The award, to be given annually by UC Merced, recognizes a scholar, author, artist or citizen who exemplifies in their work the delivery
of social justice, diplomacy and tolerance in the diverse local and global society. It is named for a San Joaquin Valley couple, both longtime educators and advocates of social justice, and is made possible by a $500,000 gift to the university by the couple’s daughter, Sherrie
Spendlove-Gallo.
Spendlove-Gallo also made a separate donation allowing UC Merced to distribute copies of Ogletree’s book, “All Deliberate Speed:
Reflections of the First Half-Century of Brown V. Board of Education,” to the university’s inaugural class.
In response to receiving the prize, Ogletree pledged to donate scholarship funds to assist students at UC Merced. He returned to
UC Merced in December 2005 to deliver a lecture on diversity in education.
“Students gather their information and perceive the world in a different way than previous generations did,” said Dean Kenji Hakuta,
“But they still want to make a difference. Their education here can help them do that.”

TODAY’S SUCCESSES BUILD FOUNDATIONS FOR FUTURE PLANS IN NATURAL SCIENCES
O
pening with majors in biological sciences, earth systems science and human biology, the School of Natural Sciences welcomed
hundreds of students, including 300 declared natural sciences majors, to a range of courses offered by the school during UC
Merced’s opening year.
The school continues recruiting stellar professors in applied mathematics; global climate change; stem cell evolutionary biology; and
atomic, molecular and optical physics. Renowned physicist Raymond Chiao, who studies gravitational waves, accepted a joint
appointment in Natural Sciences and Engineering this year.
UC Merced’s interdisciplinary environment facilitates collaborations on topics like solar energy and condensed matter physics, as well
as research programs related to human health, including infectious disease and the environment, stem cell biology, biochemistry and
computational biology. Along with the emerging Biomedical and Systems Biology Institute – a research base that links faculty across
schools in discovering solutions for human health – these programs will boost UC Merced’s plans for medical education in the future.

D
r. E.W. and Mrs. Dorothy Bizzini have pledged $1,050,000 to
UC Merced, establishing an endowed chair in systems biology.
The new chair will support the director of the planned Biomedical and
Systems Biology Institute.
The Bizzinis’ visionary gift opens the door for the creation of the
new institute, boosting plans for the growth of the biotechnology
industry in the San Joaquin Valley and paving the way for medical
education in Merced.
With plans to pursue research using techniques at the forefront of
medical research, the institute is expected to draw biotechnology to
the area through industrial and venture capital partnerships. It will
also serve as the base of research for UC Merced’s health sciences
education plan.
“The people in our community need quality medical care, and
through the new university, we think we can provide medical
education that will meet that goal,” said Dr. Bizzini, a retired
local veterinarian. “Dorothy and I are proud to assist in that
endeavor because we want to return to the community what it
has given to us.”

SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING BUILDS STRONG EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, PROGRESSIVE RESEARCH
F
rom solar energy and advanced computer technologies to improving environmental understanding and harnessing nanotechnology, the School of Engineering is
active in teaching, research and service, often combining objectives in innovative programs.
Students carry out engineering projects for nonprofit organizations through the Foster Family Center for Engineering Service Learning – A National Engineering
Projects in Community Service (EPICS) Site. Other courses require field experience that shows the benefits quality engineering work can bring to society, like understanding mountain snowpack or harnessing efficient energy.
Professors collaborate with other campuses through the Center of Integrated Nanomechanical Sciences or the Center for Information Technology Research in the
Interest of Society, and with UC Merced colleagues through interdisciplinary research institutes. New facilities like an imaging and microscopy center, a cutting-edge
open-source computer laboratory, and an energy research and testing facility support this work.
Dean Jeff Wright
New programs in materials science and engineering and mechanical engineering will help students prepare for the future. Professors in these programs are performing
research with an eye toward technology transfer, which should bring new companies and high-tech jobs to the Valley in the future.
SIERRA NEVADA RESEARCH INSTITUTE LEADS THE WAY
FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH
T
he Sierra Nevada Research Institute, the leader so far among UC Merced’s interdisciplinary research institutes, continues to explore resource-related complexities of its namesake mountain range and the adjacent
Central Valley. Population, water and watersheds, air quality, fire ecology, biodiversity, climate change, transportation, resource management and policy, as well as public recreation all figure among the interests of this
broad-ranging research organization.
This year, the institute welcomed the first director for the Wawona Research Station, celebrated significant new
grants, and involved students at every level in research opportunities. New laboratory facilities aid these efforts,
on campus and at UC Merced’s Castle facility.
The director of the institute, Sam Traina, received the Ted and Jan Falasco Chair in Earth Sciences and Geology
to support his position. A Valley native from Patterson, Traina studies soil chemistry and remediation.
Three more planned research institutes at UC Merced are also emerging as places for scholars from different
fields to pursue new knowledge together. The Biomedical and Systems Biology Institute, the Energy Institute
and the World Cultures Institute will all pursue interdisciplinary research to benefit surrounding communities.

COLLEGE ONE ADVANCES GENERAL EDUCATION
USING INNOVATIVE, EFFICIENT PROGRAMS
COMMITMENT, DEDICATION PROPEL FOUNDING FACULTY TO OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT
In the classroom, laboratory and field, UC Merced’s founding faculty are involved in discoveries that will enhance the well-being of the region and bolster the university’s reputation.
G
eneral education introduces students to broad realms of knowledge and helps them build communication,
quantitative and critical thinking skills essential to their future success. College One oversees general education at UC Merced.
During the inaugural year, College One offered a bold new general education concept, the CORE Course
Sequence. Faculty from all three schools participated. In their first CORE course, freshmen examine selected
themes through the perspectives of multiple disciplines. They take a second CORE course as juniors, where they
apply problem-solving and teamwork skills to issues they’ve explored.
Freshman seminars sponsored by College One open up the world of research in small group sessions with
faculty. These seminars can help a student choose a major and begin working relationships with professors
who can provide mentoring and support throughout the next several years.
To help students understand the role of general education in their future, College One prepared publications, a
Web site and posters for students and parents, all aiming to help students prepare not just for making a living,
but for making a life.
Students lauded their professors’ dedication, offering appreciation for attention they received from top-level scholars. The Student Advising and Learning Center worked with the
faculty to identify struggling students, then help them continue pursuing their educational goals.
Academic research thrived with more than $15 million from government agencies, industry and other sources. Interdisciplinary laboratories
designed to benefit faculty research and student learning grew over the course of the year. Grant dollars and donations contributed toward
the development of these facilities and provided support for graduate student and postdoctoral researchers.
Students gained valuable experience participating in research, and papers appeared with UC Merced bylines in prestigious journals.
Faculty members traveled to Japan, Mexico and other locations, meeting with international colleagues and exploring future
opportunities for education and research.
These successes enticed 23 new professors to join the faculty, adding still more potential for developing new majors and exploring
new fields of research.

PHYSICIANS MEMORIALIZE PARENTS WITH SCHOLARSHIP FUND
AND LECTURE HALL DONATION
Doctors Mahdu Kris and Vijaya Tangella say everything they are today is because of their parents.
“They spend so much time and effort raising you, and unfortunately sometimes they don’t live long enough to see the fruit of their
labor,” explained Dr. Kris.
To honor their parents’ belief in making education a priority, this Valley couple has donated $1 million to UC Merced.
Part of the gift will create the Kris-Tangella Academic Excellence Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will provide recent high
school graduates with the financial support they need to attend a top research university, helping the campus attract the
brightest and most promising students.
Another portion of the gift has been directed to the chancellor’s discretionary fund. In acknowledgement,
UC Merced will name the Kris-Tangella Lecture Hall in the Classroom and Office Building. Doctors Kris and
Tangella say they are pleased to memorialize their fathers,
Dr. K.V. Krishnayya and P. Rama Tangella, who raised
them to be dedicated to education and to the
community.
“In my family, education was a priority.
Everything I do I dedicate to them,”
Dr. Kris said.

STUDENT HEALTH CENTER BENEFITS FROM VALLEY CARDIOLOGIST’S DONATION
Dr. Rajender Reddy vividly remembers when he postponed college because he couldn’t come up with the $8 needed to register.
“I believe in education,” he said. “It brightens people’s lives and makes this world a better place.”
Now a successful cardiologist in Hanford, Dr. Reddy wants to make sure future generations benefit from his accomplishments by helping students
maintain their physical well-being so they can focus on studying.
Dr. Reddy and his wife, H. Jhansi Reddy, presented a $1 million gift to UC Merced to name the Rajender Reddy Health Center. The center will help each
student attain maximum physical and emotional well-being by providing a full range of student-centered and affordable services.
“I hope the center is used to the fullest extent. It would make me very happy to see students and staff members take full advantage of it,” he said.
After working on his father’s farm for $5 a month, Reddy eventually earned enough to go to college and now can’t stress enough the impact education
and health has made in his life. He would like others to feel the same way.
“It’s such a wonderful satisfaction. I am a much better person today than I was back then,” he said.
PARTNERSHIP BLOOMS BETWEEN UC MERCED AND GREAT VALLEY CENTER
I
n November 2005, the Great Valley Center (GVC) and UC Merced announced a partnership combining the networks and
connections of one of the Central Valley’s leading regional organizations with the world-class research capacity and intellectual
resources of the state’s newest UC campus.
The center continues to provide regionally focused data and information, facilitate leadership development programs for elected
officials and teenagers, and assist in the coordination of regional projects. The GVC network of community leaders, nonprofit
organizations and businesses will partner with UC Merced faculty to take advantage of the university’s research. The center’s
evolution will include broader and deeper foci on academic research that applies to the Valley’s critical needs.
GVC continues to raise funds to support its work. The James Irvine Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation
have pledged significant transitional support as the center begins working with the university. Among its upcoming activities,
GVC will work with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley to promote the discussion of
regional economic, social and environmental issues; facilitate a dialogue on preschool education; and partner with AT&T on an
innovative pilot project to bring broadband access and business development skills to a rural community in Tulare County.

DINING CENTER NAMED FOR DONORS WITH INTERNATIONAL FLAIR
E
lizabeth and Joel Wallace were looking for the perfect way to blend their personal international background with their interest in helping students at UC Merced. The perfect
match proved to be a delicious opportunity.
The Wallaces chose to let the university direct their contribution of $500,000, but decided to use their naming privilege to leave a legacy students would see on a daily basis.
“When our children were in college, they found that the student dining center was a central point for activities and a meeting place for students from around the world – almost like
a little United Nations,” Elizabeth Wallace said.
The Yablokoff-Wallace Dining Center will continue to serve all comers with the chefs’ philosophy of variety and freshness and with attention to the diverse backgrounds of the students
who eat there – an ideal fit for the generous and sophisticated donors who funded it.
“Education is the most important thing you can give your children,” Elizabeth Wallace explained. “Someday, perhaps our grandchildren can attend UC Merced and recognize that
education mattered to us.”
GYM EXPANSION CAMPAIGN DECLARED GREAT SUCCESS
U
C Merced has raised more than $1.365 million for the expanded Joseph Edward Gallo gymnasium in the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation and Wellness Center, slated for
completion this fall.
“This campaign has been a success because so many caring individuals and groups from our region have participated,” said Ken Robbins, who has co-chaired the campaign committee
since its inception in 2004.
“The center will be a tremendous benefit to UC Merced students,” said David Dunham, director of campus recreation. “Students will have a place to enjoy free time with their friends.
We thank everyone in the community for making this expansion possible.”
“As it became clear that students would need a larger gymnasium, Sandee Boese, Mike Gallo, Billie Razzari, Ken Robbins, Mike Salvadori and I came together to begin a fundraising
campaign to expand the gymnasium,” said Ralph Temple, the campaign committee’s other co-chair.
Major gifts included $500,000 from Greg and Cathie Hostetler to name Hostetler Court, $50,000 each from Mike and Jeanne Salvadori, Bob and Evie Ayers, the Donald Stewart family,
Courtesy Automotive Center, Carol Schrole, Prine Construction, Inc., the Calvin Bright Foundation, the Peter Gallo Memorial Foundation and Bartlett Petroleum.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION STARTS STRONG WITH 100% PARTICIPATION
O
nly one UC campus can boast 100 percent participation in its alumni organization – all three UC Merced graduates
have committed to take part in the UC Merced Alumni Association. They say they are already looking forward to
their five-year reunion in 2011 and other events sponsored by the UC Merced Alumni Affairs Office and the San Joaquin
Valley UC Alumni Network.
At their commencement in May, the three graduates – Eve Delfin, Kristi Imberi and Daniel Santillano – presented their
class gift to the university, a 100-gallon aquarium for the Kolligian Library.
Fundraising help for the gift came from the San Joaquin Valley UC Alumni Network, which has strongly supported
UC Merced throughout the year. This group also hosted study breaks for students during finals weeks in the fall and
spring, giving out snacks and other goodies to help students de-stress and prepare for their tests.
Alumni Coordinator Stefani Martinez said current UC Merced students are developing their own organization to prepare
for joining the alumni association and learn about philanthropy, an important role of any alumni group.

WAYS TO GIVE TO
UC MERCED
E
ach day, those of us lucky enough to work at UC Merced look at the
campus around us in amazement. The wonderful things happening on
this campus could convince any observer of this region’s bright future.
UC Merced draws support through many channels. Private-sector gifts play a
special role, often supporting facilities and programs that could not be funded
by any other means.
Physically, the campus literally grew before our eyes; last winter we opened the
Classroom and Office Building as well as the teaching labs in the Science and
Engineering Building. The Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation and Wellness
Center will be ready for student use this fall, significantly improved and
expanded thanks to a successful community effort to raise $1.36 million.
The university is profoundly grateful for the donations that have enabled the
acquisition of land for the campus, construction and enhancement of the
library and the recreation and wellness center, the development of the engineering service learning program, the creation of scholarships and more. Each
gift the campus receives creates a legacy for the future of higher education in
the Central Valley.
Our research moved forward on everything from the crucial water supply in
the Sierra Nevada and early childhood learning to stem cell-based tissue engineering. This work flourishes
thanks largely to donor-funded laboratories and other facilities.
Students in our inaugural class had the daily opportunity to meet with some of the finest minds in
academia – our own faculty. Half of those students were the first from their families to pursue higher
education, taking advantage of opportunities provided by UC Merced and its donors through scholarships and other assistance.
Industrious students created clubs and organizations, entertainment events, a vigorous student
government and an active community. Generous campus friends have assisted in supporting these
activities and facilities that are so essential to the university experience.
Those wishing to support UC Merced may consider any of the following
means of donation:
• CASH
• MATCHING GIFT PROGRAMS (CHECK WITH YOUR EMPLOYER)
• SECURITIES, SUCH AS STOCKS AND BONDS
• REAL ESTATE
• BEQUESTS IN A WILL OR LIVING TRUST
• INCOME GIFTS SUCH AS ANNUITIES OR TRUSTS
In this annual report, we express our gratitude to the donors whose philanthropy has facilitated the
variety of experiences now available at UC Merced. As you turn these pages, you will see examples of
specific donations making a difference for students, faculty and the community. We hope they will move
your heart and imagination as you consider sharing your support with UC Merced.
• FLEXIBLE ENDOWMENTS
Everything accomplished so far is still only the beginning. All of us must continue together to nurture
UC Merced. We will rely on your support to meet ongoing institutional needs, support the growth of the
campus and prepare UC Merced to keep making a difference for students, communities, California and
