THE SCHOOL
The ABC School of Florence has been teaching the
Italian Language and Culture to students from all
over the world since 1982.
In all these years we have improved our offerings to
better face the real needs of our students.
THE METHOD
The ABC School of Florence carries out research in
the field of linguistics and pedagogy according to
the “Direct Teaching Method” and takes into account the various existing trends in didactics with
a special attention to a solid grammar base. We
provide both grammar and conversation lessons.
The teachers frequently attend courses covering
new methods: their knowledge is always up to date.
Moreover teachers are selected carefully with attention to their teaching abilities as well as personality.
They are welcoming, friendly and put the students
at their ease.

WHERE WE ARE
The school is located in the heart of Florence, in
the colourful neighbourhood of Santa Croce with its
many stores, artisans’ workshops and nearby the
most important monuments and museums of the
city.
From the windows of the beautiful frescoed classrooms of Palazzo Venerosi Pesciolini, you can enjoy
the view of Palazzo Vecchio from one side and
Piazza Peruzzi from the other.

The ABC School of Florence is an authorized exam
center of A.I.L. (The Italian Language Accademy)
and of the University for foreigners of Siena (C.I.L.S.
certification).
If you want to prepare for an AIL or CILS or CELI
exam, the ABC School suggests a Standard Plus
Exam preparation Course: the advantages of the
Standard Group Course and the benefit of personalized individual lessons in the afternoon focused
on the exam. It is also possible to attend a group
course for CILS preparation.

class and partly outside: taking a walk, visiting markets, gardens, parks and touring; science, anthropology and art museums, drawing, watching a film
with Italian subtitles...

JUNIOR GROUP
Dedicated to groups of minimum 6 students, age
12-16 years old, accompanied by their teacher.

among the monuments; discover the “Secrets of
Florence”; swimming pool (in the summertime).
The afternoon activities can be arranged according
to the teacher’s wishes.
On Saturday excursions to Siena, Lucca or Pisa.

ACCOMMODATION
The ABC School in Florence provides accommodation for enrolled students. Our accommodation are
located within a maximum of 20-30 minutes walk
from the school, in different types of homes and families: young, senior, and single parent families and
couples with or without children. People may have
different lifestyles or interests.
The school provides accommodation from Sunday
(the day before the course starts) until Saturday
morning (the day after the course finishes).
An extra night on arrival or departure is possible.
KINDS OF ACCOMMODATION:
- Single and double room with use of kitchen
- Single and double room with breakfast
- Single and double room with breakfast and dinner
(double room is guaranteed only for two students
enrolling together)
- Independent studio apartment (one bedroom)
- Independent apartment (two bedrooms)
- Hotel
Meals
Room with use of the kitchen: if you choose a room
with use of the kitchen, you will have your own
space to keep your food, but please, remember you
are not the only person in the house: as the kitchen
is shared with the host family and/or other students,
you are expected to leave it clean and tidy.
Room with breakfast or halfboard: if you choose a
room with either breakfast, or breakfast and dinner
provided, you are not allowed to use the kitchen.
Italian breakfast usually includes Italian coffee, milk
or tea, biscuits, yogurt and fruit.
Students usually don’t go home for lunch: very
close to the school there are bars, restaurants and
pizzerias.
If you choose a room with halfboard you will have
your dinner with your host family. In Italy we usually
eat around 20,00. Please, inform your host family if
you have any allergies or intolerances.
RULES OF ACCOMMODATION
- Bed-linens and towels are provided and changed
once a week.
- Rooms and independent apartments are cleaned
before the student’s arrival. The students are responsable for the cleaning of their room and of the
common spaces (kitchen and bathroom).

- Electricity, gas and water expenses are included in
the price.
- The use of the washing-machine is permitted once
a week, without charge.
- An internet connection is not guaranteed. Some
accommodation may have an Internet connection
available for students at an additional cost. If there
is no Internet connection you can buy an internet
key for 15/20 € at any phone store.
- You are not allowed to bring friends home or invite
them to stay overnight (without prior agreement
with the host and the school). If you are staying out
for the night you should let your host know as not
to cause unnecessary concern.
- ARRIVAL: Students are asked to inform the owner of their accommodation at least 5 days prior
their arrival (only in case of a transfer organized
by the school, the students have to inform the
school).
- DEPARTURE: Students are asked to leave the
apartment on the last day of their stay before
11:00 am.

F.A.Q.
-What are the dates I can begin lessons?
If you are a beginner, you can start the Italian language course every other Monday. If you are not a
beginner you can start any Monday. Please consult
the schedule.
-What should I expect from my first day at the
school?
We will wait for you at 8:30 am at the school. Beginner students will start their lessons at 9:00 am.
Students in all other levels will take an oral test prior
to their start at 9:00.
-How many participants there will be in a class?
At the ABC School each class has a maximum of
8 students. This is due to better quality learning in
smaller groups.
-Which textbooks are used?
Our grammar and exercise books have been written
by the ABC School after many years of experience.
These books are used in conjunction with authentic teaching materials, for example: newspaper and
magazine articles, audiovisual materials, and many
activities inside the classroom.
-Is the teaching material included in the price?
All text books and other supplies are provided by the
school, but you are expected to bring your own dictionary.
-Which teaching method do you use?
The ABC School teaches according to the Direct Teaching Method: from the first day on, in all levels,
only Italian will be spoken. You will be encouraged
to practice verbal communication with your teachers
so that you may learn Italian naturally, increasing
your knowledge quickly and with confidence. With
your teacher you will practice your spoken Italian in
real-life situations.
-What are the qualifications of the teachers?
All the teachers are highly qualified. They have a degree in Italian language and literature. All of our teachers have been specially trained in teaching Italian
to foreigners.
-Which course certificates will I receive?
At the end of each course, students who have attended regularly will receive a certificate of attendance

• Starting dates for Beginners.
• EVERY MONDAY: Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced levels, Individual, Duetto and
Trietto Courses.
• Courses can last from one week to one year.
• The school is closed on Saturdays, on Sundays and public Holidays (Easter Monday, April 25,
May 01, June 02, June 24, August15, December 08) and from the 21st of December 2014 till the
3rd January 2016.
• Lessons are held from Monday to Friday (on Saturdays there are visits or excursions).

- partner of different Universities and High Schools in America, in Europe and in
Australia for their Study Abroad Programs
The ABC School, in cooperation with the Town Council of Florence, actively takes part
in the Language and Literacy Program for Immigrants.
