ArcGIS Basic “FishBones”
Creating a connection between road address points and the
improvements that represent an address location.
Helpful in documenting parcel entry points to access of
improvements and for discovery purposes when reviewing
construction.
Using ArcGIS Basic for Desktop I will add the following
layers/files
Parcel
Address Points – GPS points along the roadway.
Improvement Points – Residential, Commercial, etc.
buildings that have been assigned an address.

GPS points
when not
correctly
identifying
the location of
improvement.

Right
Right click the
Improvement
Point layer and
select “Open
Attribute Table”
The attribute
table for the
Improvement
Points contains
X, Y
coordinates.
When point
locations are
corrected the X,
Y fields must be
recalculated.

Right click on
the “X” field
header and
select
“Calculate
Geometry”
Select the
correct
c00rdinate and
coordinate
system
(projection)
Click OK

Following the
same
directions,
use the
process to
recalculate
the “Y” field.
Improvement Points
The next step
is to make sure
there is
common data
in each table
for both the
Addresses and
Improvements
that will allow
points form
both tables to
connect.

Join Tables based on common field
Repropkey

Right click on
the
Improvement
Points layer
-Joins and
Relates
-Join
Select Repropkey for field 1
Address Point for field 2 as it is
the layer that has the data for
the address information along
the roadway.
Repropkey in field 3 as it is
compatible information with
Repropkey in the Improvement
data.

If the Create Index dialog box
appears click Yes.

The table needs to be converted
to an independent database in
order to create lines.
On the Attribute table frame click
the down arrow and select export
Add the table to the project
Name the table that is to be created

Management
Tools
• Features
• XY to Line
The XY to Line manager opens

Select the table to be used, pick the X and Y fields
for the beginning point and the X and Y fields for
the ending point.

The layer created
will know have a
projection that
will overlay the
existing project.
The newly
created layer
will now
appear in
the Table of
Contents.

difficult to see so we will
change the line width to 2
and the line color to
yellow.

Though possible, it is very unlikely that you would have
repropkeys in the Road Address Points layer as it may
have been created by an office outside of the assessors
office such as 911 or Planning and Zoning.
If the point layer for the improvements has property
addresses and the point layer for the road address
points have addresses and they should as they are
denoting an address along a road way, we can create a
join based on address matching.
We will first
concatenate
the fields
St_Number,
Street_Nam,
and
Street Type in
the Address
point Layer
into one field.

On the Address
Points attribute
table frame click
the down arrow
and select “Add
Field”
The new field name will be
Add_Block.
The field type will be Text and
the field length will be 50
characters.

Right click
on the
“Add_block”
field header
and select
“Field
Calculator”
Add the 3 fields
that need to be
combined and
separate them
with & “ “ & so
that there is a
single space
between each.

Street
address
information
is now
combined in
the
Add_block
field.
The
Improvement
Point attribute
table currently
does not have
address
information
but it does have
a Repropkey for
each
residential
improvement

By using
foxpro we can
open the
reprop table
that is in the
WinGAP data.
It includes
address data
for the
residential
improvements.
Using the copy of Reprop
found in the GIS export in the
2013 data folder, we will add a
new field to the Reprop table
for the concatenation of the
address information for each
improvement.
The modify structure
command will be used to add
the field.

Using the insert
button will add
a new field. It
will be named
Add_block, the
field type will be
character and
the width will
be 50
characters.
The Add_Block field is now the first field in the Reprop table.

joined to the
Improvement Point
layer.

Now lets add it to our
project.

Now the
reprop_adressesses
excel file is in the
table of contents
and ready to use.
Using the same
steps that were
used to add an
Add_block to
the Address
Points attribute
table we will add
an Add_block
field to the
Improvement
Point attribute
table.

The next step
is to join the
reprop_
adressses
excel table to
the
Improvement
Points table.
Both tables have a
Repropkey field so that field
will be used to join the
tables.

Now we can populate the Add_block field in the
Improvement Points table with the Add_block
data from the reprop_addresses table

Add _Block in the Improvement Points table is now populated
with the address information from WinGAP.
The next step is to
join the Address
Points attribute table
to the Improvement
Points attribute table
using the Add_block
field in both tables as
the common field to
create the join.

and ready to export to an independent table

line layer is
created and
added to the
table of contents
Again we have
lines
connecting the
Address Points
to the
Improvements
but the match
is not as clean
as using the
repropkey
fields which
shows that our
data needs
review.
