2013 Annual Report
Habitat Friends and Families,
As I reflect on 2013, I want to thank you for your
continued support and generosity towards Habitat for
Humanity of Metro Louisville. With your time, talent and
treasure, Habitat was able to have another successful and blessed year.
Habitat’s influence in the Portland and surrounding neighborhoods continued to
prosper during 2013 and we were able to build over 20 homes for very deserving
families. The families and individuals that Habitat had the joy to work with were
beyond inspiring and we look forward to seeing them thrive and achieve their
dreams.
During 2013, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville welcomed the opportunity
to work with new and exciting companies and individuals. Habitat partnered with
long-standing friends like Humana and Semonin Realty as well as new
organizations, such as Shively Area Ministries and ADP. We also had the privilege
to work with school groups, such as Manual High School and even Louisville
Mayor, Greg Fischer! Habitat conducted its 3rd Board Build, and similar to the
previous two, it was a successful and rewarding experience for everyone involved.
The bonds that Habitat forged in 2013 not only created positive relationships, but
also shaped our community by developing and modernizing its neighborhoods.

2013 Events
Shively Area Ministries celebrated their 25 years of service by cosponsoring a Habitat house with Texas
Roadhouse! Tracey and her family
now have a beautiful house to come
home to every night!
KentuckyOne Health “secured a
$250,000, low interest, loan from Catholic
Health Initiatives, a sponsor of KentuckyOne
Health, for Habitat for Humanity of Metro
Louisville.” This grant with provide Habitat
the opportunity “to build five new homes in
the Portland and Smoketown neighborhoods.”
Students from Manual High School partnered with Yum! Brands to build an LEED Habitat house for a very deserving family. Louisville Mayor, Greg Fischer, joined these Habitat
volunteers as a part of the Give A Day project!

2013 Events
Habitat welcomed 40 National
FFA Organization delegates, from
around the country, to come work on a
Habitat house. Their time spent with
Habitat was filled with laughs, hard
work and construction!
The Board Build of 2013 took
place in the Shively neighborhood of
Sunset Gardens. Habitat’s board
members, along with their guests, had
the opportunity to participate in the
building of a Habitat house. Their
hard work during this build was rewarded by a very deserving homeowner receiving her new home!
The development in the Portland neighborhood continued to
thrive during 2013. The “Peek at
Portland” event gave people the opportunity to tour local Portland buildings and businesses. Habitat also
continued to build new Habitat
homes in the neighborhood!

Star’s Story
Year after year, Habitat works with various families and individuals,
whose dream is to own their own home and to provide a better life for
themselves and/or their family. In 2013, one truly amazing homeowner who
had this dream, was Louisville native, Starkeisha “Star” Allen. Star works
two different jobs; she is a label maker at Johnson Control Injection Molding and a barber at Tight Skillz Barbershop.
Star learned of Habitat’s homeownership program through fellow Habitat owners and was motivated to apply. Star’s dream of homeownership was
always in the back of her mind but she feared of
credit issues. However, Star overcame her fears and
her dreams became a reality when she was approved for a Habitat house in early 2013. Star’s
new Habitat house began in April of 2013 and finished later that year!
With a newly completed house, there were
several things that Star looked forward to once she
got the keys to her home. In particular, Star’s family is very close, so she looked forward to having
her family over. Also, Star is a big UofL fan and
was excited to decorate her bedroom and bathroom in a UofL style!
Star’s life positively changed during 2013 and the lessons and memories she made from her Habitat experience will forever be with her. Even
though Star will always remember her humble beginnings, she is looking
towards the future and hopes to become a successful barber and open her
own barber school within 5 years!
