Working in Whatcom County since 1987, in partnership with God
2012-2013
Annual Report
Working in Whatcom County since 1987, in partnership with God and
community. Providing simple, decent, and affordable housing for people in need
so that families can live and grow into all that God intends.

Year in Review
Building “Out of the Box” in 2012-13
In 2012-13, Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County
completed our 33nd and 34th homes and began our 35th.
We embarked on a revolutionary new way of building homes
to be more energy-efficient and less expensive to own. We
welcomed four new partner families, a new board member,
Kim Weil, several new office staff members and Habitat Store
associates, and a celebrity guest to our affiliate. We celebrated
the best month of sales we’ve ever had at the Habitat Store,
threw a successful auction, redesigned our Web site, and
asked our Facebook friends and local latte lovers to chip in to
help us build a house.

Star power
March 2013, we hosted Habitat International Ambassador and
former “This Old House” Host Steve Thomas for several days
of events. Steve came to represent Habitat at the 2013 Whatcom County Home and Garden Show, help us raise funds and
awareness for Women Build, and join Building on Faith volunteers to help on the site of our first passive build.
A new beginning
In October 2012, Victor and Juana Ortiz and their children
thanked volunteers and welcomed them to their new home in
Ferndale with delicious Guatemalan tamales. After immigrating to the United States, living in a dilapidated mobile home
and working hard to make ends meet, Victor and Juana, their
three daughters and young son finally have a simple, decent
home they can afford.

Breaking ground
While construction volunteers were still busy putting the finishing touches on the Huante home in summer 2013, Resham
Kaur and Sajan Singh joined Habitat staff, supporters, and
representatives from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans next
door to break ground on the Sing-Kuar home. The home is
almost complete, and we expect it to be even more efficient
than our first passive home!

If everyone gave a little
For World Habitat Day, October 7, 2013, we embarked on a new
fundraising adventure. Working through social media and local
coffee vendors, we asked Whatcom County residents to donate
$3, about the cost of a cup of drip coffee, to Habitat. We hoped
that if 50,000 local residents could donate $3, we could raise
enough to build a home for a family. While we didn’t reach our
goal on the first attempt, the campaign created a lot of excitement and awareness about Habitat’s work. We hope to build on
what we learned and continue experimenting with these kinds
of crowd-sourced, small-donation fundraisers.
There’s no place like home
Jaime and Leandra Huante and their three children moved into
their new passive home in June. After living in an uninsulated
substandard two-bedroom house in rural Ferndale, they now
enjoy snug walls, low utility bills, and a quiet street near a park
and trails where the family can safely play and ride bikes.
Women Build builds excitement
In December, Habitat broke ground for our third Women Build
project, a passive designed, solar-powered home in Birch Bay for
Julio and Juana Ortiz. The 2014 Women Builders will be organized into build day teams, and each team is challenged to try to
raise half the cost of the building materials for their work day.

Specialty, and has spent more than 30 years in sales and retail
store management.
In fall 2013, Janet Straka (center) joined our office staff as
programs manager/volunteer coordinator. Janet spent 20 years
working for a local insurance agency and has experience as a
client ombudsman.

Kim Weil (right) joined Habitat Whatcom’s board of directors
this year. Kim has been an environmental planner with the City
of Bellingham for 22 years and recently chaired the city’s smart
growth green team. She has lived in Bellingham since 1987 and
is the mother of two grown children. Kim became acquainted
with Habitat’s work in Whatcom County when her church, St.
Sophia, participated in the Building on Faith program. She was
inspired to serve on the Habitat’s board of directors because she
wants to bring her interest in green building and community
building to an organization with similar goals.
