Receiving awards, Left to Right top row: Pat Hertz, Elaine Elroy & Roy Broadhagen Left to Right bottom row: Mary Kay Stortini, Jim Dingman & Eliza See. Continued on next page The Real Estate Stop David Nelson Sales Representative “Your Island Realtor” 949-7867 • 246-2757 SENIORS OF THE YEAR...continued from page 1 Also as usual, the centerpiece of the festivities was the ceremony honouring the ‘Senior of the Year’ Award recipients, chosen by each township in the area that the Trefry Centre serves. Representatives were on hand from Tarbutt, Johnson, Hilton, Plummer, Laird, MacDonald, Meredith, Aberdeen and St. Joseph Townships, as well as the Village of Hilton Beach. They even had Rockin’ Ronnie Hawdon on hand to provide great music, followed by a BBQ feast and then the ceremonies. Our Seniors of the Year Their contributions make all of us so much richer in so many important ways. Congratulations to all of our Seniors of the Year, and thanks for all that you do! You can tell a great deal about a community by its volunteers. While our various levels of governments look after providing the essentials of community services, it’s the hard work and efforts of our volunteers, who give so much of themselves, that breathe life into the quality of all our lives. Harmony Tea Room ... invites students, staff, friends and relatives of former students to help us celebrate the closure of Harmony School 50 years ago. Come see friends, photos, memorabilia and enjoy ‘Lunch Bag’ treats from the 60’s on June 22nd and June 29, 11:30-3:30. THE URBAN FORESTER PROFESSIONAL ARBORIST 705 257-8360 [email protected] These warning messages, which claim to be from the RCMP or CSIS, tell the recipient to pay $100 dollars via Ukash so their computer can be “unlocked”. These types of messages, commonly known as “scareware”, are designed to create such shock and anxiety that victims respond by sending money quickly. If you receive one of these messages, please be aware that it is a scam - these messages are not being issued by the RCMP. Last November, Ukash posted an alert on their website about a similar scam targeting residents in the United Kingdom. Stephen Andrews, Anglican Bishop of Algoma, will make his Annual Parish visit at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Jocelyn Township, for the 10:30 am Combined Service with Echo Bay. A Pot Luck Luncheon and Anniversary Cake will follow. At this Service, Bobbi Lynn and Liam Murdock will be confirmed. Bishop Andrews will have prayers for our Parish as we are celebrating three Anniversaries this summer: • On July 18, 1883- 130 years ago, St. John’s Church in Hilton Beach and the graveyard were consecrated. • On July 22, 1883- 130 years ago, Holy Trinity Church in Jocelyn was consecrated. • Holy Trinity Church in the 1880’s It is now 108 years since St. George’s Church in Echo Bay was built. Back in 1883, Bishop Edward Sullivan, second Bishop of Algoma (1882-1896), arrived by boat at Hilton Beach, where he consecrated the church yard as a place of burial and the Church under the name of St. John’s Church. Wilson had come down to present the candidates for ordination, which was to take place the next day. With Mr. Wilson had come Mrs. Sullivan, Mrs. Richardson of Winnipeg, Rev’d R. Midwe BISHOP’S VISIT...continued from page 4 had come all the way from the Sault in an open boat, a distance of over thirty miles.” “Before the Sunday Service, Mr. Berry from Bruce Mines, Mrs. Beer, Mr. & Mrs. Eddy and others arrived per wagon from Hilton Beach. Some young men also came on horseback.” “Promptly at ten, the service began. The Church which the people had spent so much time and loving labour was at last consecrated to God’s service forever, under the name of the Church of the Holy Trinity. The congregation filled the building so that some were sitting on the platform of the reading desk and others were on the chancel step. After the consecration of the church came Morning Prayer, then the ordination of C. F. Berry to the Diaconate, and the Rev. R. Renison and H. Beer to the priesthood.” “Next followed the Sermon, which was a masterpiece of learning and eloquence, and showed the honour which awaited the faithful minister in God’s Kingdom. (Revelation 4:4) At the Holy Communion, forty persons communicated including the Clergy. Near the close of the Service, there was a Baptism. After four hours of service, we repaired to the adjacent school house, where a sumptuous lunch was prepared for all who had come from a distance.” “So far everything had gone off without a single hitch. In the long and complicated service we had just gone through, and in the other services, the music and all things passed off harmoniously. The singing of the hymns and chants was excellent, led by Miss Margaret Kent (eldest sister of Fred B. Kent, M.M.) who presided at the organ, with the large congregation present joining heartily in them and all the responses.” “But this was not to continue. One of the men kindly went for Rev. Beer’s horse, and unfortunately allowed it to run away, smashing the buggy to pieces. Here was the dilemma, we were already pressed for time, and likely to be late for our other appointment and there was no other buggy to be had. The accident spoiled the day for us. Mrs. Sullivan kindly solved Mr. Beer’s troubles for him by promising him a new Early Order Special: Save 5% on R.O.’s, Evaporators, and Manufactured Stainless Steel Equipment April 1 – May 31, 2013 Over 15 years’ experience We Buy and Sell Bulk Syrup! The people crowded into the school house at Richards Landing were still patiently waiting. Here again eight persons were confirmed, five of whom were married people. Two children were also baptized. Owing to the accident, we could not carry the communion vessels with us, so there was no communion here. After the Service we rode back to Jocelyn, and the Bishop and his party that night, slept in their tents and started the next day at noon, in their boat for Manitoulin Island. This first visitation by Bishop Sullivan to the mission of St. Joseph’s Island is one we will long remember. It was one of downright hard work such as the Apostles of old are known to have engaged in. The Rev’d Mr. Beer’s diary provides us with the 24 names of those who were confirmed in the year 1883: John Noble, James McMenemy, Thomas Barton, William Kent, Richard Young, Jessie Fremlin, Esther Lowen, Ben Garside, Charles Cooper, Sarah Falconer Brayley, Arthur Fuller, Richard Watson, Mrs. Fudge, Edith Fudge, Mrs. Chadwick, Samuel Duggan, Ben Morgan, Archie Wilson, Mrs. Mary Morton, Mrs. Matilda Miller, Mrs. Cole, Eliza Brownlee and Jane Brownlee. The top was down, the breeze was blowing through what was left of his hair and he decided to open her up. As the needle jumped up to 80 mph, he suddenly saw flashing red and blue lights behind him. “There’s no way they can catch a Mercedes,” he thought to himself and opened her up further. The needle hit 90, 100.... Then the reality of the situation hit him. “What am I doing?” he thought and pulled over. The cop came up to him, took his licence without a word and examined it and the car. “It’s been a long day, this is the end of my shift and it’s Friday the 13th. I don't feel like more paperwork, so if you can give me an excuse for your driving that I haven’t heard before, you can go.” The guy thinks for a second and says, “Last week my wife ran off with a cop. I was afraid you were trying to give her back!” “Have a nice weekend,” said the officer. Don’t Miss Switchback’s CD Release Party! ARE YOU A SWITCHBACK FAN? But if you haven’t yet discovered this amazing musical duo, Switchback is coming back to the Island next week, to host a special CD Release party on Sunday, June 30 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Richards Landing. THANK YOU Heartfelt Thank You: Michael Hooper, 70, of Richards Landing, passed away very peacefully on June 1, 2013. I want to thank the many people who made the last 3 weeks much easier on me. The EMS who responded twice, Dr. MacLean, Dr. Beller, and the nurses at Matthews, who helped in many ways and to get Michael into my van for the drive to Alliston, Ont. To the Trefry Centre who provided rides to the Soo and Meals on Wheels. To the many friends and neighbours who came to the house with food and good wishes; it meant so much to me. I am so proud to be part of our Island hospitality.
