THE CIRCLE
OF CHEATING
MEERA VASUDEVAN
The two standard responses of the cheated are fight or flight. In the latter, the victim avoids confrontation, harbours ill-will in
one’s heart and loses trust in people. He turns
his back to the cheater and lives in regret and
denial, repressing his retaliation. In the former, the cheated takes on the offender and
devotes herself to seeking retribution.
An elderly illiterate man once owned acres
of land that he trustingly signed away to a
developer who offered him two flats in his new
construction. The developer however created
a township, replete with villas, condominiums, apartment complexes and the works.
With no documents to prove his ownership,
lack and fear of legal know-how, he now
remains a mute spectator to the developer’s
threats.
Another, an enterprising woman entrepreneur, invested her life’s earnings on a grand
mansion only to have the previous owner
quarterbacking at the time of handover of the
property. The lady could’ve easily returned
the measly signing amount and called off the
sale agreement and sought reimbursement.
But she wanted to teach the NRI propertyowner a lesson. She took him to court with the
best legal team, got him thrown out of his job
in the UK .
Cheating is commonplace today and racketeers abundant. They are smart-talkers, dress
smoothly to avoid attention and empathic.
They assume that someone who presents oneself so well will behave trustworthily. But isn’t
the cheating business all about friendly and
approachable appearances and hefty promises. Only an impulsive fool parts with his dear
possession in return for trust. In today’s date,
trust has ceased to exist. Facts are all that
remain. Always have a back-up plan, prepare
yourself for the worst and best outcomes and
take your time to decide.

now and we are still in
our honeymoon stage.
“We don’t get much
time together now as
both of us have been really busy. Our last few
months together have
been great. After we
came back from our honeymoon in South Africa,
we have been tied up.
Earlier, we used to steal
time to meet, but we have
decided not to take it for
granted now that we are
husband and wife and
not spend time with each

“But one thing both of
us have mutually decided
on is that we will not
bring our work home.
Though Ghanchakkar is
our first project together
after our marriage, we
don’t discuss it at all
when we are home. This
was a decision we both
agreed upon, even before
we tied the knot, as it
might lead to unnecessary issues. I totally
respect it and I’m glad we
both took that call.”
