A pleasant evening of conversation, food, spirits and awards was enjoyed by all in attendance. Tom Culmsee put together a slide show memorializing Jack Wolcott and Don Pesznecker. Both of these active fliers passed away in 2011 and are missed by the PASS members. This year five club members were recognized for their contributions to the club. Roger Breedlove was once again recognized for the time and energy he devotes to the club newsletter and email distribution lists. Terry Erickson was also again recognized for his contributions to the club in obtaining many of our flying fields. In addition to obtaining the fields he has remained in continuous communication with the field owners to coordinate when and where we can and will be flying. Tom Fowler was recognized for organizing the activities early in 2011 to repair the road to the top of Peterson’s Butte. Tom performed the engineering, coordinated the repair work and solicited the funds to pay for the repairs. Recognition was given to Tom Culmsee for his efforts to obtain safe winch line retrievers for the club. The old retrievers were very dangerous and the new ones will be much safer and easier to use. Jim Gibson was recognized for his activities to organize the local scale aerotow events. These events have been very popular and well attended during the past few years. For the first time in many years the club recognized a member for a new design. Mike Skeen was recognized for the novel winch that he designed and built based upon a brushless motor and powered by a lithium ion battery pack. In addition to the Priceless Club sponsored by Tammies Hobbies. Bob Nelson and Bruce Alber each had their names drawn for a gift certificate. The attendance raffle prizes were co-sponsored by Coyote Hobbies and Tammies Hobbies. Once again Dave Johnson conducted the Big Honkin’ Raffle and distributed a large collection of prizes including a radio, servos, RTF airplanes and gift certificates from local merchants. Dave Portwood hauled in the DX-6i transmitter and Josh Brady collected many planes and a helicopter to share with his Mom (and perhaps Matt also). Again this year I would like to thank Tom Culmsee for organizing the banquet and providing the computer program which was used to draw the winners for the Big Honkin’ Raffle. A simplified explanation; fly a thermal, slope or powered flight using a plane with many, small wings. Submit the following information: category, date of flight, duration of flight, number of wings, wingspan. The fine print: * The score for a flight is determined by multiplying the number of wings times the duration of the flight (measured in seconds) and then dividing that number by the wingspan of the aircraft (measured in inches). * A wing is any horizontal flying surface which is at least ½ the area of the largest wing. * Each wing must be separated from all other wings by at least ¼ of the largest wing chord. * The wingspan of a multi-wing aircraft is the wingspan of the largest wing. A r e a W i n d N e w s l e t t e r o f t h e S a i l p l a n e S o c i e t y Bruce Rose, CD * Batteries may be recharged while the aircraft is flying. * A powered aircraft may use power, thermals or slope lift to assist in remaining aloft. * The flight time for a thermal glider is from when the source of propulsion is shut down until the aircraft contacts a ground-based object. Examples of propulsion sources are: winch, high start, electric motor, aero tow, mother-ship, handlaunch, etc. * Thermal gliders may use only thermal currents to assist in remaining aloft. * The flight time for a slope glider is from when the source of propulsion is shut down until the aircraft contacts a ground-based object. Examples of propulsion sources are: winch, high start, electric motor, aero tow, mother-ship, handlaunch, etc. * Slope gliders may use either thermal currents or slope lift to assist in remaining aloft. * The challenge is intended to encourage innovation with* The wingspan is defined as the greatest value during the in the club. * The guidelines may be amended by me at any time durflight if the wingspan is configurable. ing the year. * The object of the challenge is to record the highest * I have the final ruling regarding the interpretation of scores for single flights in the specified categories. * An official flight may be flown anytime in 2012 using an the guidelines. * Prizes will be awarded to the winners during the 2013 aircraft under remote control by a PASS member. * There will be three categories for the contest: powered PASS banquet. aircraft, thermal glider and slope glider. Internal combustion engines are not allowed in the powered aircraft category. * The flight time for a powered aircraft is from the time it leaves a ground-based object until it once again contacts a ground based object. * The source of propulsion for a powered aircraft may be used for as long and often as desired.
