Newsletter Summer Term Friday 19th April 2013 Dear Parents and Carers Welcome back to the start of the Summer Term, it is lovely to see everyone free from coughs and colds. We hope you all had a fun filled Easter Holiday and are ready for an action packed Summer Term! We have so many exciting activities planned this term, so please keep an on eye on the diary. The children should have brought home their class letters during the week. Years 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 will have two PE lessons each week, so please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school every day. On that note, please make sure that if you child wears earrings to school that they are only studs and they can remove them by themselves. We would like to remind the children that nail varnish should not be worn to school. News from Our Kitchen This week has seen the launch of our own South Hams Federation School Dinner Service, which has been greeted with great enthusiasm by all of the children who have enjoyed the school dinners on offer this week…. On Monday, everybody’s eyes were focussed on some amazing “gooey “chocolate” pudding with the mince and onion pie being consumed enthusiastically by everyone… roly poly pudding, gammon roast, Cumberland pie not to mention “real fish and chips” and Salcombe ice cream. We can hardly wait until next week to sample the dinners on offer!! A huge well done to our cooks - Kim at Malborough and Emma (with Sharon’s help) at Stokenhamthey have really given a super service this week. A huge “thank you “ is also extended to our governors Anne Rossiter and Jo Moon, who have worked so hard over the past term with Kim and Emma, to develop menus, costing’s and links with suppliers, so as to ensure that all of our children have access to good quality hot food, using local quality produce at the best price. Without their expertise and guidance we certainly would not have been in the position to manage and deliver our own school meal service within the federation. Page 1 of 5 It would be helpful if you decide how many meals your child is going to have each week and pay the correct amount at the beginning of the week/Half Term. A school lunch costs £2.15 per day; £10.75 per week or £62.35 per Half Term (it is a 6 week Half Term minus one day for the Bank Holiday Monday). Cheque payments should be made payable to Devon County Council. Free School Meals & Child Tax Credit Income Threshold (2013-2014) The Department for Education has confirmed that the annual household income threshold for Free School Meals (FSM) eligibility for applicants in receipt of Child Tax Credit but not Working Tax Credit will be £16,190 from April 2013, remaining the same as in the 2012-13 fiscal year. If you have any queries regarding Free School Meals please contact the DCC’s Customer Service Centre number 0845 155 1019. Attendance Last term attendance across the whole school was below the National Average, this was due to both illness, and also an increase in the number of parents requesting holidays in term time. Please remember that any requests for term time holiday impacts negatively, on a child’s learning opportunities and progress, a child’s individual attendance rate, as well as the whole school’s attendance rates which are scrutinised by “Ofsted” and published by the DfE in school league tables. To raise our attendance levels to be above the National Average for the academic year 2012-2013, there will need to be a concerted effort to raise attendance levels this term. Thank you in advance for your co-operation in this very important area of school life. PTFA News On a warm and sunny Easter Saturday the PTFA held their Annual Bucket Collection at the Co-op, a total of £116.41 was raised on the day. Many thanks to the Co-op, everyone who gave money on the day and to the parents and children who rattled the buckets, the money raised will go towards the purchasing of new play equipment and seating for the playground. On Monday you should have all received a letter and envelope from the PTFA asking for a donation of £5.00 towards the cost of purchasing prizes for our Bingo evening on 9th May. All envelopes should have been returned to the office by today, but if you have forgotten please hand into the office by Monday. Any raffle prize donations should also be handed into the office. All money raised from the Bingo evening, will go towards the playground refurbishment. Please talk to Sarah Prowse or Kathy Harrod, if you have any queries. The next meeting for PTFA is Monday 22nd April at 2.15pm in the staff room any new faces are always welcome. Schoolcomms We have to use our new electronic communication system; please let us know if you have any problems so we can sort them out as soon as possible. Many thanks. School Gateway We had hoped that our new payment system would be up and running on our return from holiday, however, it appears that the company wasn’t able to set up the banking arrangements in time. We will let you know when they are ready. DCC has also withdrawn their on line payment system so in the meantime please can you revert to cash or cheques (made payable to Devon County Council). Many thanks for your patience. Page 2 of 5 Yr 3 & 4 Residential The deadline for payment for the Year 3 & 4 camping trip to East Soar Farm is next Friday 26 th April.
