A number of staff, students and community members were involved in the preparation and successful running of this affirming event. I would like to thank students who tidied the school yard to receive our special guests – Jacqui Blyth, Jacob Darvell, Chris Harris and Fraser Morcombe, ushered our guests to the Student Centre – Elise Crick, Millie Gibson, Caylem Keenan and Riley Uwland, acted as hosts and hostesses throughout morning tea – Natasha Carland, Chris Harris, Jamie Talbett and members of the School Choir, were interviewed and so capably spoke about their impressions of Chaplaincy and its place in our schools – Wayne Bruty, Joelle Godfrey and Kira Venes, sang with the Secondary College Choir and provided entertainment of a very high standard – Emily Crowley, Cathryn Thorpe, Jacqui Blyth, Hayley Crowley, Eden Kidd, Hayley McKenzie, Samara Blake, Joelle Godfrey and Tiarna Prattley, helped with the clearing up and packing away at the end of the event, including washing the dishes – Natasha Carland, Chris Harris and Jamie Talbett. I would like to thank Adrian Page who prepared the slide show and ran the technology for the morning, Victoria Lovejoy and Kerryn Walker who set up the student centre, Belinda Evans and Tanya Kehoe who sang and supported the choir, along with the following people who sit on the Chaplaincy Committee that meets once every school term – Jan Dunwoodie, Tanya Kehoe, Philip Kynoch, Adrian Page and Karl Schier also the community members who volunteer their time to be part of the Chaplaincy Committee – Lyn Fleay, Abigail Font, Julie Kendall and Michael O’Connor. And of course, our Chaplain, Philip Kynoch, who deserves an immense expression of thanks for his tireless effort in support of us all. The morning was a great success and it was a pleasure to recognise the generous donations that have been given to Chaplaincy over the past years. The Beaufort Service Group, presented a cheque for a further $1,000 on the day. It is rewarding to see members of the community come in to the College and be witness to the good work that is being performed within both the Primary and Secondary schools through the Chaplaincy Programme I personally, find it humbling to work with such supportive and caring people who take seriously the well-being of our students and their families. Thank you all so very much and I look forward to our continued connection. Joy McKelvey Secretary of Beaufort Schools’ Chaplaincy Above: The School Choir with their conductor Mrs. McKelvey. Page 1 From the Principal’s Desk We had a very successful orientation day last Friday for Grade 6 students who will be in Year 7 next year. The students were enthusiastic and although it can be daunting to be in a new school for the day, the Grade 6 students seemed to become comfortable quite quickly. It was great to see our older students helping out the younger students where necessary and assisting them in feeling welcome on the day. The school Athletic sports were held on Monday. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, which was a mixture of friendliness and competitiveness. It was terrific to see the support and encouragement amongst the students and staff and again the House Captains did a brilliant job of keeping the teams organised. Some standout performances for me were: Hannah Bruty and Peta Goode for their achievements, enthusiasm and commitment on the day, Lachlan Pfeifer for demonstrating his outstanding abilities, Wayne Bruty and Joel Chester for their amazing display of talent in the running and jumping events. Thanks to Mr Collins for organising the day – not an easy job but it all went smoothly and thanks also to the staff for performing their various roles throughout the day, with some of the students alongside to help. More photos from the Chaplaincy Morning Tea It was also great to see some parents there to support our students – much appreciated. We announced the details of Age Champions and the winning House at General Assembly Tuesday morning but well done to all who participated and gave it their best shot on the day. Our School Council elections have been conducted and finalised. Congratulations to our new parent representatives: Tracy Gibson, Kerri-Anne Neil and Sandra Holtkamp. We really appreciate people being prepared to commit to these roles and make a valuable contribution to our school. Thanks to Jayne Lilley, Janine Thompson and Kate Tiley who completed their two year commitment. Congratulations also to Heather Higgins and Lynne Dickman who have been re-elected as DEECD representatives. We really appreciate all who contribute to our School Council as they play a very important role in our school governance. Tuesday April 1st is the School Council Annual General Meeting. This is a public meeting which members of the Beaufort community are welcome to attend at 6.30pm. The main agenda item will be the presentation of the 2012 Annual Report. Our first 2013-14 School Council meeting will be held at 7.00pm following the AGM. Karl Schier, Principal Right: Sue Carnes and Helen Murphy were guests of the Chaplaincy Committee. Grade 6 ‘Come & Try Day’ Thirty-five enthusiastic Grade 6 students from district primary schools, came to Beaufort Secondary College last Friday for the first of their orientation days. Students were welcomed to the school by the Principal, Mr. Schier and our Year 12 student leaders - Hannah Bruty and Jake Morcombe, School Captains, Kira Venes and Cody Morrison, Vice School Captains, Peta Goode and Wayne Bruty, Sport Captains. Hannah made a short speech, welcoming the students to the school and hoped they enjoyed the day. Kira spoke as President of the SRC (School Representative Council) and explained the activities the SRC were running at lunchtime and encouraged the Grade 6s to come along and participate. The Grade 6 students followed a six period time-table and enjoyed classes in PE, Art, IT, Beaufort Secondary College students in Years 9 and 10 are eligible to borrow a Netbook from the school. To borrow a Netbook, students and their parents are required to attend an information evening which outlines the responsibilities of taking part in this program. There is no cost unless the Netbook is damaged. The information evening will also include a session on how to use Windows 8. Year 10 students and their parents, who attended the Netbook information session last year, do not have to attend again this year, however, they will have to complete a new Agreement Form. The Information Evening will be held on Thursday, 27th March at 6.00pm in Room 11. If you have concerns, please contact Mrs. Higgins. 19th March, 2014 Fibres, Science and Technology Wood. At recess, students were treated to an icy pole and a fruit juice drink, thanks to the Parents & Friends Association. Our young students were well looked after by our student helpers Lauren Broadbent, Rachel Kendall, Brayden Lovell, Chris Harris and Josh Franc. A Parent Information Night was held on Tuesday, 18th March. Our school’s two day orientation program will be held in December, completing the Grade 6 Transition program, giving these students an excellent and comprehensive introduction to their secondary education. Page 3 House Athletic Sports This year, our House Athletics was once more held at Llanberris Athletics Field in Ballarat. The turnout of both parents and students was fantastic and we were treated to a great day of track and field efforts from our students. With very good participation rates, the students demonstrated positive attitudes towards sportsmanship and all events were completed in great spirit. This was helped by some very good organisation by House Captains and Vice Captains who also led from the front in competition. There were some excellent efforts throughout the day from many students. The day’s honours went to the Kambara-Wandarra combination this year. The Age group champions for the day were: 13 year 14 year 15 year 16 year 17 year 20 year Boys William Sawtell Alex Damalas Joel Chester Cameron Gadsby Lachlan Pfeifer Wayne Bruty Girls Linley Eastick Laura Bruty Eliza Grigsby Tegan Avery Mardi Uwland Hannah Bruty Thank you to all staff and students and especially to the parents who came along to support and help out on the day.
