Historic Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Marion County is surveyed
In late November 2013, amateur
historian Clarence White, a
Schley County native now
residing in Atlanta, surveyed
the large African-American
cemetery at Mt Zion Primitive
Baptist Church, located off
Highway 26 East at Putnam and
Doyle in Marion County.
The church, according to oral
reports, began during slavery or
Reconstruction under a brush
arbor on land belonging to the
Stevens-Munro clan. Since
the 2013 survey, White – who
was born near the church and
cemetery on Collum Road 68
years ago – has edited and
revised survey data gathered
Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church
from headstones, oral accounts
of family members, and physical
searches for lost graves.
The resulting compilation has
been published on two websites
devoted to Marion County
history:

Webster County schools score above average on ‘Report Card’
The State of Georgia has released its
report card for all public schools in the
state. This report is known as the College
and Career Readiness Performance Index
(CCRPI).
It measures the extent to which a
school, school district, and the state are
successfully making progress in a number
of key areas, such as content mastery,
student attendance, and the next level of
preparation.
Webster County Schools have again
excelled according to this report card.
Webster County scored higher than
the state average for all three schools
(elementary, middle, and high).
Webster County Elementary was second
highest in our RESA region. Webster
County Middle was second highest in
our RESA region. Webster County High
School was the highest on the CCRPI
scores in our RESA region.
High school student Casey Willis,
far left, and middle
school
student
Arianna Campbell
are only two of
the many students
who are mastering
academics in the
Webster County
School System.

500 graves, making it one of the
largest in Marion County, and
has been expanded several times
since the first acre of land was
acquired in 1888 at the rear of
the church building from Miss
Ida Munro.
Mr. White prefaces the survey
data with a historical sketch of
the church and the surrounding
African-American community
that has now largely disappeared.
Prominent surnames on the
cemetery roster include Fudge,

The primary speaker for the
program was Rev. Dr. John
F. Williams from Union Hill
Church in
Ellaville.
He spoke
of keeping

alive through
prayer, peach
and love,
saying that the
term ‘keeping’

He said that King’s message rang

the world, and
that his fight

Americans,
but for all
people.

Rev. Willie

Ellaville Methodist Pastor
Lowell Lyman gave the prayer
for the community followed
by the group singing “We Shall
Overcome”. Then Rev. Hazel
Chavez gave the closing prayer.
