Join us in our goal to promote the development of Greek American college students into becoming outstanding individuals through the support and advancement of their education. Visit our website panhellenicscholarships.org for donor opportunities and more information. with pride, passion, and promise—for the 40 scholarship recipients, their families and the more than 450 guests who attended. It was an evening of star quality with Dean Richards, WGN’s Emmy award winning entertainment reporter serving as Master of Ceremonies, Alexander Payne, whose films have won two Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Petros Gaitanos who delighted guests with his music. “Tonight we applaud and celebrate the outstanding academic achievements of our scholars. They are the “stars” who have the drive and ambition to be the “best and brightest” Greek American college students in the country. I express to them my deep gratitude for demonstrating the values of Hellenism and congratulate them as award winning scholars of the PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation,” said Chris Tomaras, Founder and Chairman. In accepting their awards, each student expressed gratitude and appreciation for the Foundation’s support. Eleni Christou, an Honors Student at the University of Florida said after the ceremony, “I am honored to be a PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation Award recipient. This award means more to me than the financial help that will allow me to continue my studies; it is recognition that the Greek American community—of which I am so proud to be a part of—is proud of me.” “Every one of our scholars has pride in their Hellenic heritage and upbringing; a passion for learning and the promise to succeed,” said Mr. Tomaras. He also congratulated the recipients’ parents for instilling in them the ethos, integrity and philotimo—that deep sense of honor and responsibility—to achieve their personal best. Dr. George Alexopoulos, Chairman of the Academic Committee also expressed congratulations. “I say with great conviction that your success is OUR success, one that is celebrated by the entire Greek community. You will no doubt reach the top of your education plateau in the very near future and you will be the core of young dynamic leaders that our society needs.” Expressing gratitude and appreciation on behalf of the recipients, Cleopatra Haviaras, a junior at CUNY Queens College in New York, remarked “being a 2012 PanHellenic Scholarship Award recipient is a great honor, one that we will forever cherish. We thank Mr. Tomaras and the Foundation for recognizing and awarding students for their achievements. They have bestowed upon us a most gracious award, one that will enable us to move forward with our heads held high.” One of the highlights of the Awards Ceremony was the presentation of the 2012 Paradigm Award to acclaimed writer and director, Alexander Payne. Payne joins a distinguished group of Paradigm Award recipients whose life accomplishments and dedication to Hellenism serve as role models for scholarship recipients. Introducing Payne was the Very Reverend Archimandrite Eugene Pappas, his spiritual father during Payne’s boyhood years. Fr. Eugene recounted Payne’s younger days and how his parents instilled in all their children a dedication to the Orthodox faith and the Hellenic heritage. (continued next page) Chairman’s Message Inspires Pride, Passion and Promise in Hellenism and Education Ten years ago, the PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation hosted its first Awards Ceremony and Gala. This was our way of expressing our congratulations to the exceptional college students of our Greek American community. The event, which has grown to be one of the premier social events in Chicago, celebrates and applauds the academic achievement of students from across the country. It also says that we as Greek Americans care about our young scholars and their future. With every Gala, my pride in our award recipients has grown, for they have demonstrated, not only academic success, but a deep devotion to their Hellenic roots. My passion for education has deepened as well. “Morfosis” (education) is the most important ingredient of the human existence, which together with Hellenic values, delivers leaders and significant contributors to society. Our recipients have drive and ambition. They are passionate about learning and seeking a higher education. Fulfilling our promise of two years ago, we have launched Hellenic Birthright, our new cultural enrichment program that was created in cooperation with Anatolia College and their school of Higher Studies, the American College of Thessaloniki. On June 18, 2012, fifteen students who have never been to Greece embarked on the journey of a lifetime. In this next decade, the Foundation is exploring how it can increase the number of scholarships awarded, expand scholarship opportunities to graduate students and create an endowment that will sustain the Foundation’s mission and ensures the legacy lives on. As benefactors, donors and supporters, you made the difference and contributed to our success. Throughout these ten years, you have responded generously, giving us the resources to fulfill our mission. I express to you my heartfelt gratitude. I encourage you to support a deserving student with a donation to the PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation. Your contribution will offer a lifechanging opportunity for a young scholar in need of support. We look forward to your joining our growing group of donors. Together we will build a better America through Education and Hellenism. With Gratitude, They have the promise to succeed and contribute meaningfully to the American society. And you have my promise that the Foundation will continue to expand its role, not only in the arena of awarding scholarships, but also in developing leadership, educational programs and mentoring platforms that will enable our Greek American students to soar to new heights. 10th Annual Awards Gala (continued from cover) In his uplifting speech, Chris Tomaras thanked the recipients and donors who have made the PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation the premier scholarship foundation in the country. He also expressed appreciation to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for their continued support. Over the past ten years, the Foundation has increased the number of recipients along with its awards, giving a total of $250,000 annually. They have created new programs, such as the current cultural enrichment and study abroad program, Hellenic Birthright. Members’ Dedication and Diligence Select Outstanding Award Recipients “Now we must look forward to a new decade and set new goals,” said Chris Tomaras. “Our plans include supporting our students’ cost throughout their four-year college education. With tuition and related expenses on the rise, our scholarships will be responsive and relevant to the needs of the time,” continued Mr. Tomaras. Thanks to the dedication and commitment of Dr. George Alexopoulos, Dr. Constantine Georgakis and Mr. Constantine Houpis, members of the Academic Committee, this year’s scholarship recipients, once again, represented the “best and brightest” in the United States. Following the Awards Ceremony, guests enjoyed a sumptuous dinner at the Hilton Chicago, a terrific Silent Auction that featured more than 100 items, and a musical performance by Petros Gaitanos that had everyone dancing. Noted dignitaries attending the event included: His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos, His Grace Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos, Honorable Consul General of Greece in Chicago Ioanna Efthymiadou, Presidents and Officers of Greek American organizations, Heads of academic institutions and members of Chicago’s cultural and social communities. We also express appreciation to Dr. Alexopoulos for his untiring efforts as Chairman. Dr. Alexopoulos is a wellknown college educator and is a member of the Board of Trustees of Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, Illinois. His vast knowledge, experience and leadership abilities have tremendously aided the PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation in the selection of outstanding recipients worthy of recognition and support. The PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation expresses its gratitude to all who supported the event, making it a stellar, memorable evening for the scholarship recipients and our guests. We express our gratitude to the Academic Committee for their invaluable service to the Foundation! 2011–2012 PanHellenic Award Recipients “I would just like to say that I am extremely grateful to be picked among so many bright people that represent Greeks in America today. Paradigm Award Recipient Advises PanHellenic Scholars to “Follow Your Passion” Hellenic Birthright The Journey of a Lifetime for Young Greek American Scholars Alexander Payne, the famous Greek American filmmaker, was this year’s Paradigm Award recipient. In accepting the award, Payne addressed his remarks to the scholarship recipients by saying: “The only modest piece of advice I will offer you tonight—for God’s sake, don’t listen to your parents when it comes to choosing a profession. They love you so much, but they often mistake financial security as early as possible with happiness in life. They are not the same thing, not by a long shot. Earth, during the brief flash of life that God gives you and that you call your own, offers way too many spectacular possibilities than can be predicted, or worse, dictated by loving and well-intended Greek parents.” Born February 10, 1961 in Omaha, Nebraska, to Peggy and George Payne (Papadopoulos), Constantine Alexandros Papadopoulos was the youngest of three sons. His parents owned a Greek restaurant, and his father was also a Commander in the US Navy. Payne credits his parents for instilling in him an understanding of human life and a true appreciation of his Greek American identity. Alexander Payne’s portrayal of extraordinary moments has earned him two Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay; the first in 2004 for Sideways and most recently for The Descendants in 2012. He has been awarded numerous Golden Globes and received honors from the Writer’s Guild of America and the New York Film Critics for his remarkable abilities as a writer, producer and director. The PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation is proud to have presented the 2012 Paradigm Award to Alexander Payne in recognition of his outstanding life accomplishments, for being an exemplary role model for today’s young scholars and for his dedication to family and the virtues of Hellenism. A Message from our Executive Director “Thank You for Believing in Our Mission” Yanni Valsamas, Executive Director of the PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation expressed his appreciation to donors and guests for their continued support by saying, “Aristotle Onassis once said “To succeed, it is necessary to make others see things as you see them. Thank you for believing and seeing things as we see them. Without your continued support, we would not be celebrating 10 years of outstanding achievements.” He thanked Mr. Chris Tomaras, Founder and Chairman, for his foresight in establishing the Foundation, and expressed how Mr. Tomaras’ leadership, dedication and spirit of philanthropy have enabled the organization to grow and help many young scholars. “After 10 years, I feel more compelled and determined now more than ever to ensure that the Foundation continues for many decades to come,” said Yanni, who has been with the Foundation since it inception. You can help the PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation meet its goals to provide scholarships and educational programs with your donation. WGN Entertainment Reporter Master of Ceremonies for 10th Annual Gala The PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation was pleased to have Dean Richards, Emmy Awarding winning entertainment reporter for WGN-TV and Radio as this year’s Master of Ceremonies. Dean’s engaging personality added to his role as Emcee of the event. Dean Richards grew up in the West Beverly neighborhood of Chicago. From a young boy he was fascinated with broadcasting and would play “radio” in the basement of his home. A graduate of Columbia College, Dean earned his Broadcast Communications/Marketing degree, and began his career by working his way through a string of suburban radio stations. Today, Dean is a “star” entertainment reporter at WGN-TV and host of WGN Radio Sunday morning program. In addition to winning an Emmy, Richards has won over 30 local and national awards for programming and production, including the prestigious Peter Lisagor Award for Outstanding Journalism. The PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation expresses its gratitude to Dean Richards for being Master of Ceremonies and for contributing to the evening’s success. Thank you Dean for a job well done! Hellenic Birthright is the Foundation’s newest educational program and a unique opportunity for Greek American college students who have never been to Greece to learn about and appreciate their heritage. This cultural enrichment program connects American students of Hellenic descent with their ancestral birth place by offering specially tailored educational courses with cultural activities that blend academics, art, architecture and history. This program was launched in collaboration with Anatolia College and their school of Higher Studies, the American College of Thessaloniki (ACT). The inaugural Hellenic Birthright participants, ages 18-25, toured Greece for a five-week study abroad experience that lasted through July 20th. In addition to their course work for which they will receive up to six transferable credits, students participated in daily as well as overnight excursions to historic sites such as Vergina, Pella, Corinth, Delphi and Troy. They also toured Athens and Thessaloniki, visiting museums and ancient ruins in each city. Hellenic Birthright confirms the Foundation’s goal of developing educational and leadership programs designed to enhance knowledge and strengthen the participants’ bond to their Hellenic heritage and culture. The PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation is grateful to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and all of the donors who helped make this new program a success. Our participants are delighted with their new experience as we see it in some of their messages below: “[As our plane landed in Thessaloniki] I was hit with an encapsulating gratefulness—to God, my family, and to the donors who made it possible for me to be in the land of my ancestors.”– Anna Colby “Greece has been nothing short of breathtaking. We all chose to come here for different reasons, but with the same intentions; we wanted to know Greece, we wanted to know what it really means to be Greek, not Greek Americans, but actually Greek.” – Alexa Moulakis “I thought back on the numerous places we’ve visited on the trip—from Corinth in the south, to Alexandroupoli and the Greek borders in the north, to Troy in the east, and Corfu in the west—the vastness and beauty of the archaeological sites and the scenery of the land can’t be described in words but merely by the feeling you receive as you indulge in life’s treasures and wonderful experiences. As I move into my final weekend in Greece, I’d like to express my deepest appreciation to Mr. Tomaras and the PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation for the opportunity and experience of a lifetime.” – Dimitrios Roumeliotis “I would like to begin by expressing how grateful I am for this opportunity extended to me by Mr. Tomaras and the PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation. My experiences from the different trips to Troy, Athens, Delphi and Dion have not only given me memories of a lifetime, but also a new outlook on my Hellenic roots. Furthermore, this program has given me the chance to see family throughout Greece for the first time, a chance I may have otherwise not had.” – Jonathan Mitchell 2012 Hellenic Birthright Participants Evanthia Arianas – University of Illinois at Chicago Zacharias Bouras – University of Chicago Nicole Christakes – Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Patricia Christakes – Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Anna Colby – Azusa Pacific University In Grateful Appreciation of our 2012 Hellenic Birthright Sponsors The Foundation especially expresses its appreciation to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for their continued support in scholarship grants and the generous contribution to Hellenic Birthright.
