FORMER TV-29
WEATHERMAN’S
SAGA TO BE
PRESENTED AT TRIAL
John Bolaris, the much maligned
former TV-29 weather news personality,
may gain redemption in several months.
Bolaris gained a degree of notoriety
when he allegedly was drugged and
scammed of $43,000 by two women he met
at a Miami, Florida bar over two years ago.
Just recently a Florida night club
owner, Alec Simchuk, was arrested in
connection with Bolaris and other cases.
Simchuk allegedly used attractive
women to become friendly with unsuspecting
John Bolaris
men frequenting night clubs, placing them in
a position whereby the girls would gain their
victims credit cards, and then run up huge
purchases.
Bolaris allegedly had his American
Express card charged with more than
$43,000.
Simchuk is also alleged to have ties to
an Eastern European crime ring, according
to a report by Daily News columnist, Dan
Gross. It was the FBI who apprehended
Simchuk.
Trial is scheduled for Simchuk around
Alec Simchuk
October 9, 2012 in Federal Court in Miami.
Bolaris is scheduled to testify. “I’ve been waiting a long time for
this,” he told Gross. “Life’s been hell for two years and I can’t wait for
justice to finally be served.”

It’s a common public
relations procedure to have
Philadelphia City Council issue
a proclamation commending a
company, or individual.
City Council also makes
declarations
announcing
a
special week, or special event.
Those proclamations, and
commendations for years have
been processed by a City Council
secretary, Nancy Gonzalez.
She makes $60,000/year.
And, just recently, she was
arrested.
She was arrested for
allegedly stealing from a
destitute 88-year-old woman.
Her take, according to
published reports, was almost
$25,000 from the senior citizen’s
Social Security checks.
Gonzalez has been on the
Philadelphia City payroll for 32
years.
Daily News Reporter Gets

A Daily News reporter was
right on the scene of a gun-point
holdup recently.
Phillip Lucas, a staff writer
and crime reporter, was recently in the area of 46th Street
between Chestnut and Market
Streets at 10:30AM when he
was approached by a boy.
The boy, later identified as
being 13-years-old- -13!- -pointed a revolver at Lucas and demanded money.
Lucas told his assailant he
wasn’t carrying any cash. The
boy turned away, walked away,
and within 24 hours was arrested.
Lucas wrote a bylined article
about the incident for the Daily News.
The alleged felon turned out
to have been arrested twice previously for robbery.
His age was verified as being 13. Thirteen!

Bying “Undecideds”
By Mike Mallowe
Spending $6 billion on people who can’t make a decision
may be wretched excess.
This fall the two political parties will spend about $6 billion on
messages aimed, primarily, at a
small group of people – undecided voters.
I can’t conceive of being
an “undecided” voter – or pretty
much of an “undecided” anything.
I am one of those people
who may be wrong, monumentally wrong, but who is never in
doubt.
I can definitely respect your
personal or political preference,
as long as you have one.
My biggest problems have
always been with people – particularly leaders – who waited
until the last possible minute to
see which way to jump. A word
like “trust” never enters into their
decision-making.
But, that’s just me.
There are still people out
there who can’t decide whom
they will vote for, or if they will
vote, at all. I’m sure you might
even know some of them. They
might even make you as crazy
as they make me.
In a weird way this really
resonates with me because I
know so many people who have
spent their professional lives
also trying to convert or convince
undecideds – buy my product or
service; use me; believe in me;
try my store, or restaurant, or
magazine, or come to my school.
(Editor’s Note: They’re called
“advertisers”)
No matter how hard you
work, or how many customers
you thoroughly satisfy – which
is exactly what most successful people in business do every
day – you will still be spinning
your wheels chasing after the
undecideds. And, you will never
be able to truly win over those
undecideds, at least not for long.
Marketing To
Determine Future
If you look at it from this
point-of-view, all marketing, including advertising and public relations, is about trying to capture
those undecideds.
The future of your business,
or at least your profits, might depend on the undecideds and in
this election the future of the whole
country might depend on them.
Who Are
The Undecideds?
Elizabeth Kolbert, a blogger
with The New Yorker magazine,
tried to come up with a good estimate of how many people this
“undecided” label really includes.
The best person she went
to was former Bill Clinton adviser
Paul Begala, who pops up quite
Mike Mallowe
a bit as a talking head on cable
news. This is what Begala had to
say recently in Newsweek:
“When you factor out the
undecideds in securely red or
blue states (since their votes
won’t change the Electoral College results), the election comes
down to ‘around 4 percent of the
voters in six states.’”
“I did the math so you won’t
have to,” Begala told her.
“Four percent of the presidential vote in Virginia, Florida,
Ohio, Iowa, New Mexico, and
Colorado is 916,643 people.
That’s it. The American president
will be selected by fewer than
half the number of people who
paid to get into a Houston Astros
home game last year.’”
As you might expect, something else the undecideds have
in common is a stupefying lack
of basic knowledge regarding
current events, politics or even
fundamental civics.
Does that translate to the
undecideds among us also being
the stupidest among us?
You don’t have to answer
that, and neither do I.
But the question does keep
coming up in these analysis
pieces and based on the kind of
group profiles they project, I do
not think you would want any undecideds doing surgery on you
or your loved ones.
People who take umbrage
at this frequently confuse independent voters with undecided
voters.
Independents have often
given up on both political parties
after belonging to one or both of
them. Many independents vote
regularly and know all about
the issues. My apologies to any
touchy independents.
But we aren’t talking about
independent voters here – we
are talking about people who
are so zombie-like that they truly
cannot figure out which of two
clearly defined candidates they
like best.
Spending Marketing
Dollars on the Undecideds
The amount of money being spent trying to get through to
the undediceds is astonishing.
Before bothering to do much research, I calculated that about a
billion dollars each sounded right
for the two candidates.
Boy, was I wrong.
The OpenSecrets.org, a blog
that pushes for good government
in Washington, recently quoted
one of their experts on the amount
of money that will be spent, including advertising, media buys of all
sorts, public relations, social media, direct mail, volunteers, and
even flower arrangements at fundraising dinners:
“Although a lot of money still
remains to be raised and spent,
the data already show that we’re
on track to break the extraordinary, record-setting sums spent
in 2008,” said Sheila Krumholz,

“That cycle was the first in
which we crossed the $5 billion
mark, and the big question now
is whether we will already reach
-- or surpass -- $6 billion just
one cycle later. At a minimum,
we’ll come close. More important
than the total spent, the real difference this cycle is how great a
portion of that money will come
from purportedly independent,
often secretive groups.”
If you like your wars fought
largely on television, then this
political season is meant for you.
Thus far, President Obama
has heavily out-spent Mitt Romney, but Romney has an advantage in the total amount of money raised.
He’s waiting for big buys
closer to the election.
And he will easily be able to
afford them.

this year – will be the TV advertising cash that’s spent on the
ESPN Monday Night NFL game
between the Philadelphia Eagles
and the New Orleans Saints.
The next day is, of course,
Election Day.
The irony in that is compelling: Obama and Romney come
into this election as two severely
wounded candidates, regardless
of what else transpires between
now and November 6.
While the candidates are
bombarding us with unrelentingly negative messages, the
two teams playing that night will
be equally injured: the Saints will
still be reeling as a result of the
league-imposed penalties stemming from Bounty-Gate.
The Eagles, as a team and
an organization, will still be trying
to come to terms with the tragic
death of coach Andy Reed’s son.
As long as you like your
melodrama thick, you’ll be getting big doses of it.
And, just in case you are
wondering who is mainly responsible for all that contributing, the
answer is the same for both parties.
The primary givers usually
belong to some combination of
the financial, insurance and real
estate industries.
Now, you may be thinking,
but aren’t those the people who
wrecked the economy back in
2008?
The answer is yes – and they
are contributing generously to Republicans and Democrats, alike.
So, it looks like there are those
who have come out of the recession by landing on their feet.

My Latest Medical Adventure
The growing list of medical
and health care professionals I
see during my getting older —
but not THAT old — process,
was the subject of one of my
recent columns.
I reported I was seeing
eight different doctors, plus
supplementary
healthcare
providers.
In the column, I poo-pooed
the time and money spent,
because I’m in good health.
Now the visit-the-doctor list
is, unbelievably, growing.
For Tests.
Let me tell you of an MRI
test my family physician recently
ordered for me.
It was to determine if
numbness in my feet was caused
by diabetic type-two neuropathy,
or as my general practitioner
said, “possibly a problem at the
bottom of your spine.”
Spinal problem? Spinal
problem?? I have no problem
with my spine.
“Ridiculous,” I said.
I told my wife, Sandy, “This
is more waste of time.”
But she encouraged me to
do it.
“It will tell you,” she said.
“Don’t you want to know?
“I know there’s no problem
with my spine,” but I’ll do it,” —
So, two weeks later, giving
up another half-day of doing
business (which I like, and am
good at), off I went to the MRI/
Imaging building.
There was the usual delay
of checking in, being in line, and
surprisingly, after only a short
25-minute wait I was ushered to
the clothing-changing area, and
on to the MRI machine.
I slid in…(It made me
feel like I was in a coffin)…the
headphones were applied…
radio station WOGL came on
with music of the 70’s (my
choice) the MRI’s loud electrical
noise started. I closed my eyes
and pretended to myself not to
be there.
In less then two minutes,
the noise, the music stopped,
and I was pulled out.
“That was quick,” I said.
There was a reason for the
short observation.
Laura, the technician told
me: “We can’t do you.”
“Why?”
“The machine picked up
metal near your groin,” she
answered.
“Do you know what it is,”
she asked.
I have a, well, unusual,
spontaneous, sense of humor,
“Probably, from the days
when I was a professional sword
swallower,” I told her.
Actually, I knew it was a filter
put in 16 years ago to prevent
blood clots. (There have been
none.)
“Well, she said, “you have to
get an x-ray to see what it is.”
So, off I went to the X-ray
department (Fortunately in the
same building, or I wouldn’t have
bothered).
Over two hours later, having
hit the bottom of the x-ray
appointee’s list, the x-ray, was
done.
The exam took only 15
minutes, counting the time of
changing clothes, again, for the
hospital wraps.
Yep, it was the filter.
Back to the MRI.
There I was told, “We can’t
do an MRI on you!”
“Huh?,” I queried, “why?”
“Well, the radiologist fears
the MRI machine will heat up the
metal, I could get so hot it would
burn inner flesh and tissue.” Not
good (an understatement).
I saw myself in intensive
care, or a real coffin.
That was it!
Goodbye MRI.

Guide to Executive Living Presents
DINING OUT
Annual Visit to E. Bay Crab & Grille
Always Brings a Welcome and A-1 Meal
Having a Summer meal at
East Bay Crab & Grille, 6701
Black Horse Pike, Egg Harbor
Twp., N.J. (609-272-7721) has
been a ritual for my family for
almost 20 years.
Proprietors Chuck and Joan
Armstrong always greet us by
name, and make us feel special.
I remember conversations
I’ve had with Chuck where we
have discussed mutual hiring
experiences, family situations,
food (especially availability of
soft shell crabs).
Crabs are a main staple at
East Bay. Hard Shells. Alaskan
King Crab. Snow. You name it.
They have it.
And the selection of serving
styles is plentiful.
Hard Shells are cooked
Maryland style. Jumbo lump
crabmeat is sautéed in a home
made marinade sauce with
heavy cream and parmesan.
There is crab bisque soup,
snow crab legs… go to their
Internet site, www.EastBayCrab.
com, and see for yourself.
The restaurant also offers a
wide variety of traditional meats
and seafood.
Their slow roasted prime ribs
by itself, and or in combination with
a choice of snow crab legs, stuffed
shrimp on crab cake is $28.
All dinners come with a
courtesy, super salad, and
continuous loaves of freshlybaked bread.
The greeters and servers
remind one of the nicest
young people within your own
neighborhood.
Evenings often host special
events. For example, every
Friday there is DJ Karaoke.
Lots of free parking. Bar.
Credit cards. Reservations are
welcome, but not necessary.
Open year round. Group
and banquet facilities available.
My personal opinion: Go
once. You’ll be going back and
back. As we do.

Summer Shore Restaurants
For 20 years — It’s Still The Shore Diner

Recently, competition arrived.
The “Wind Jammer” in Somers Point opened this season, and its
menu (and owners) had their Beginning at the Shore Diner.
My wife and I wondered if Shore Diner, always busy, would lose
its flow of local and summer residents to the Wind Jammer.
It hasn’t.
When we recently went to Shore Diner on a Saturday at 6:30PM,
it was as busy as ever.
Owner (call me “Spiros”) and his three
sons were there, greeting, working… working,

The waitresses, while many of them
new, continued to give the same friendly
attention, with efficiency.

Steak House “Max” At Trump Plaza
Has Quality People
In trying to get an impression of an
upscale restaurant, sometimes it’s more
than the facility. It’s the people working
and managing there.
Such was the case on a recent
visit to “Max’s” the upscale steakhouse
inside Trump Plaza, on the boardwalk at
Mississippi Ave., Atlantic City, N.J.
I have a grandson named “Max”, so
the selection of a restaurant named “Max”
was a magnet for me to visit.
The facility has the looks and
atmosphere one would expect of a longtime, quality casino-hotel- restaurant- - a
place to be served royally- -and seen.
(Side note: I don’t think Donald Trump
eats there. They don’t serve crow!).
The interior and ambiance of the
restaurant is sort of classic Old English.
The menu offers what you would
expect.
Quality beef of top traditional cuts.
Veal. Lamb Chops. A smattering of
seafood, especially lobster and crab. (It
is Atlantic City.)
Pricing? Do I really have to report?

Revel’s “Central” Restaurant’s
Lunch Staff A Positive
The Inquirer gave the major restaurants at
the new Atlantic City hotel/casino Revel, 500
Boardwalk, a colorful two-page news spread
earlier this season.
One item that caught my attention was a
$147.00 price for a select steak. I don’t think any
dinner steak is worth $147.00 real money. Casino
comps are a different matter.
Anyway, I was in Margate, N.J., and it was
a heat-suffocating weekday afternoon. I’m not a
beach person. My wife, Sandy, is not a casino
person. So I was surprised when she — out of
the blue — said to me:
“Let’s see what the new Revel is like”.
I agreed. In about two seconds.
I enjoy the slot machines, but rarely play. I
know it will cost.
Anyway, we went.
It was just past standard lunch hours. We
certainly were not (emphasize not) going to a highpriced steak restaurant at 2:45P.M. — or at $147
per steak.
We found ourselves at Central Restaurant,
where the menu has standard fare.
I ordered the clam chowder ($14). The portion
was small. Some small clams were offered — in
the shell — on a separate plate. With candor, I’ve
had better clam chowder at Ruby’s in Ardmore,
and at about half the price.
The Philadelphia Regional Business/Marketing Monthly
My wife ordered their chicken burger ($14).
The portion was generous. She enjoyed it. And it
came with a salad at no additional cost. Good deal.
Our waiter, John Gowdy, was quite
personable.
Upon my questioning, he told us he recently
graduated from West Virginia University, and
was enrolled in the Law School at Columbia
University. Impressive.
He wants to be active, eventually, in politics.
Not as an office holder, but as a campaign
manager.
He already has the attributes: eye contact
and a firm handshake.
He also arranged for some bread and butter
for me (on my request), which is not included for
luncheon guests.
The other staff members, the bus boys and
seaters, were also efficient and pleasant.
In short: Nice…Overpriced, in my opinion —
but it is a hotel-casino. And that has to be expected.
Other Lunch Items
Central Restaurant also offers seven
sandwiches, including a lobster burger at $30, main
courses include salmon, chicken, steak (about $23
- $27) sides of vegetables a la carte at $8.00, and
more. So, with a non-alcoholic drink lunch can
easily be $50./person. Be prepared.
