By: Mike Mallowe Never put money on what seems like a sure thing. The house always wins. The prospect of KYW-TV3’s long-time anchors covering the Pope-in-Philadelphia seemed certain. But, that’s why the smart money has a way of staying right in people’s pockets. No Pope-Mobile shots with three of the most popular and respected anchors in recent Philadelphia TV history. That may be the biggest upset of the summer. Most fans of the on-air talent at KYW-TV, the CBS station in Philadelphia, would have bet big that meteorologist Kathy Orr, news anchor Chris May and sports chief Beasley Reece would have been around to cover Pope Francis I when he greeted the faithful along Ben Franklin Parkway. Thanks, in large part, to those three and others at KYW, the station has always connected very, very well with the community. Kathy Orr and Carol Erickson, in particular, can be magical with Delaware Valley crowds. Just to acknowledge the competition, Adam Joseph, over at WPVI-TV6, ABC, has the same gift. People adore them and they give the public that love right back. (All of these pronouncements are based on personal observation, where they happened to be covering the same thing I was.) Local News Upheaval But, their Papal moment was not to be – at least not at KYW. This summer saw one of the biggest shake-ups in local TV history with the dismissal of Orr, May and Reece, along with the station’s parting company with its president and GM, sales director and news director. Just for good measure veteran broadcaster Carol Erickson said “Thanks, but no thanks”, to a new contract offer, as reported in the Inquirer and several other sources. The executive behind all these changes, at least on the surface, is Brien Kennedy, KYW’s new president and GM. He’s a veteran of several small-market stations, the most recent being Minneapolis. Whether his knowhow translates to a major market setting remains to be seen. These moves, while not unprecedented in local TV, do suggest an angry impatience with the status quo at 6pm and 11pm, as measured by the ratings points and audience size. They, in turn, allow the stations to charge whatever the market will bear to local advertisers and also pick-up a split of the national take from the networks. Local news has always made money for both the stations and the networks; never more so than now. By some measures the local stations actually out-perform the national news operations in terms of profit percentages. How could that be? The three local stations in every big market dominate their metro regions and feed an audience that’s hungry for local news and local weather; with a nod to the pretty faces who usually do traffic. In contrast, the national news shows get clobbered, pretty regularly, by cable programming, streaming services and the average American’s stated distaste for national and international news. They tell the polls they consider national news shows irrelevant, irritating and biased. Fox’s national news has figured out how to make some money – but not by doing the news in any broadcast journalism sense; they just do infomer- Have available at your business or organization. Status Quo The status quo that seems to have precipitated everything happens to be Channel 6 (WPVI-TV) way out front, followed by either 3 (KYW-TV) or 10 (WCAU-TV, the NBC, now, Comcast, station). So, if you are thinking that all this is about a race to see who gets to be Number 2, you would be absolutely correct. However, Number 2 does get to charge local advertisers more than Number 3. Other factors are at play, here, too: Orr, May and Reece were station fixtures; they made great money and they commanded fan-base attention. KYW’s local news should always be at least Number 2, and arguably Number 1, because hardly anybody can even remember when CBS programming didn’t dominate the Top 20 among network shows. Ever since Comcast took over (and this could be pure coincidence, too) NBC’s network prime-time programming has dramatically improved. The one local station that should always be dead last is ABC, for the same reason – namely, ABC wouldn’t know what to with a new prime time hit. Therein lies the mystery: How can Jim Gardner and Action News so completely dominate a major market when their national programming is like an anchor around their necks? Last, but hardly least, count on KYW-TV3 and its on-air talent to get a lot, lot younger faster than you can say, “18-35 demographic.” Advertising Mike Mallowe Communications Times Volume 42, #2 September/October 2015 29 Bala Avenue, Suite 114 Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004 Phone: (484) 562-0067 • Fax: (484) 562-0068 Email: [email protected] Website: www.PhillyBizMedia.com Advertising/CommunicationsTimes is an independent newspaper published by Advertising/Communications Times, Inc., Joseph H. TV Anchor Out Over One. Loses Case vs. Employer The original event was years ago involving the unmentionable “N” word – but it had its ramifications recently, involving a former area TV 29 (Fox) reporter and anchor. The story begins over eight years ago. During a meeting of TV-29 news personnel, a reporter, Robin Taylor, told the editorial group assembled of a symbolic burial of the “N” word by the Philadelphia Council of the NAACP. In attendance was fellow news staffer Tom Burlington. Burlington piped up: “Does this mean we can finally say, “n-----?” Whoa! He was referred to sensitivity training – and was fired July 12, 2007, after the aforementioned, incident on June 23, 2007. He fought the termination. His case was heard in June 2015, in U.S. District Court. And he Lost!. The Jury was all-white. Their deliberation was only three hours. During his away-time from TV-29, Burlington has a new career: welling real estate. Tom Burlington New Publisher at Phila. Business Journal Lynn Kremer, veteran publisher of the Philadelphia Business Journal, ( 400 Market St., Philadelphia, PA l9l06, 215-238-1450), has retired. For the past 23 years, she directed the media company, initiating additional collateral sources of income to the firms standard ad revenue of its weekly newspaper. They included awards – and special sections – for “Women of Distinction” & “Healthiest Employees.” She also served as a board member of the Philly Ad Club, and Independence Visitors Center. Lynn Kremer Prior to joining PBJ, Kremer was sales manager at Crain’s Chicago Business publication. In an internet, open letter, upon her retirement, she wrote she intended to stay in Philadelphia. Her successor has been named. He is Sandy Smith, former director of advertising for the Washington Business Journal for the past three years. The Philadelphia Business Journal and The Washington Business Journal are both owned by American City Business Journals. The company operates 43 Business Journals in across the country. Money Spigots Flowing Some Phila. Creative Firms Awash in Water Dept. Contracts The Philadelphia Water Department is paying $63,000 for a logo! The logo is two words, “Philadelphia Water”. The former logo cost $250. Plus, it was created by a student at an art school. The $63,000 logo is from the LevLane ad firm, The Wanamaker Bldg., 100 Penn Square East, Phila., PA l9l07, (215-825-9600), info@ levlane.com. Note: The firm is across the street from City Hall. In a full-page news story in the Daily News, Brian X. McCrone & Ryan Briggs reported the $63,000 was only part of a $350,000 “rebranding “ contract paid to LevLane. They further reported: “Although the water department has an eightperson public relations team, it has shelled out more than $600,000 in image consulting work to LevLane.” A Bargain? Another city office, The Department of Licenses and Inspections also gave a brand change contract to LevLane for $100,000. For the logo portion, the agency “only” charged $50,000. LevLane’s only change on the existing logo, according to the Daily News was replacement of the ampersand. They took out the & and put in + ( from L & I to L+ I). THE PHILADELPHIA REGIONAL BUSINESS/MARKETING MONTHLY Back to the Water Department’s other contracts for design services. Wow! By Bonnie Squires Old Homestead Executive Chef Romeo DiBona in the kitchen. When you are ushered to your table in the elegant Old Homestead Steak House at the Borgata Casino & Spa, 1 Borgata Way, Atlantic City, N.J.; Tel.: 609-317-7160), you forget that Atlantic City has been having economic problems for years now. The restaurant is full. People are waiting for tables as well. The Old Homestead, a New York City institution, is one of the country’s oldest steakhouses and is known for serving the finest steaks in the Big Apple for nearly 150 years. With their second location in Atlantic City, guests can experience their trademarked domestically raised, hand-massaged Kobe beef. We reserved a Saturday night table. Our two servers, Lamia Webb and Rafael Lopez, were solicitous and delightful. Lamia had spent seven years next door as a wait-staff at Izakaya, and Rafael has been at Old Homestead Steak House for twelve years. Each of them is also enrolled part-time in college classes, Lamia at Camden County’s dental hygiene program, and Rafael at ACCC and Stockton’s business management programs. Their main focus, as we experienced were their patrons. You notice immediately the “napkins” - which are actually tea towels, and each one has four words woven into the design: Porterhouse, Sirloin, Filet Mignon and Rib Eye. Steaks are the signature items, naturally. You will be tempted to make a meal out of the fabulous white onion and cranberry walnut rolls, but you must leave room for appetizers, main courses and dessert. Two of us shared the wedge of iceberg lettuce with choice of dressing ($12). The lettuce was so fresh and crisp that it seemed as if it must have been plucked from fields right outside the casino doors. The “colossal crab meat cocktail” ($23) made a big hit with the other two of our party, who were highly impressed with the quality of the crab meat. HUGE RIB STEAK Our male companion was inquisitive enough to order “The Gotham Rib Steak 34 OZ” ($56). It could easily have fed not only the three of us, but taken home in a doggy bag to provide lunch and dinner for family members for a couple of days! The steak was cooked to perfection. A petit filet mignon 10 oz. which I had with hash brown demi glaze ($48) was also pink in the center, done on the outside, and enough for at least two diners. My girlfriend ordered the Baby Rack of Lamb ($47). She not only shared the lamb chops but took home the rest in a doggy bag. The “side offerings” at $13 each included delicious sweet potato mashed with roasted walnuts and marshmallow, creamed spinach, and asparagus hollandaise. But we were determined to try the desserts as well, after visiting the upstairs dining tables and taking a peak at the Chef’s Table private room on the main floor. Executive Chef Romeo DiBona can create a special tasting menu for the table in the private room, or he can whip up some creative specialties for a theme party. All of the desserts sounded tempting, but we decided on the Warm Chocolate Chip Cookie with vanilla ice cream, crushed Health bar, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Rafael was kind enough to bring us a dish of Ben and Jerry’s cherry garcia and chunky monkey ice cream on the side. We miraculously found room to demolish the desserts. VARIETY OF DINERS Just across from us was a table of ten handsome young men, all New Yorkers, who were staying at the Borgata after a golf match earlier in the day. The Old Homestead Steak House seems to be a magnet as well for bachelor and bachelorette parties. Brothers and owners Marc and Greg Sherry believe in the adage, “Don’t mess with a good thing,” which is why the menu at their steakhouse in Atlantic City nearly mirrors the one in New York. And for good reason: “We haven’t had an empty seat in quite a few years,” Greg reported. Public Relations Manager is Brian Brennan (brianbrennan@ theborgata.com).
