By connecting community businesses and individuals with teachers and their “wish lists,” the program gives everyone an opportunity to support education. Teacher lists are published weekly in The Island Packet, along with “wishes granted.” But the benefits go far beyond, according to educators like Colleen Wynne, 2009 Sue West Educator of the Year recipient who talks about Project Connect and how parents can get their student off to a great start for school. Q: How do programs such as Project Connect help teachers in the classroom? A: Project Connect helps by highlighting the many and varied needs of teachers as they reach to provide for the children they teach on a daily basis. I think one of the strongest impacts is that it spotlights opportunities for members in our community and gives every business an opportunity to support education. One of our teachers received 25 sets of much needed thesauruses and dictionaries; others received 50 5-inch binders, art supplies, digital equipment, and donations for educational classroom trips. Q: What’s your top advice for parents to help make this a successful school year? A: For parents in this busy 21st century environment, “schedule” dedicated quality time with their children. Parents should be keenly aware that children are desperate for positive attention from their parents. You can never go back and capture quality time once they are grown. Also, carve out the time to eat dinner together every day while having conversation, read together every day to establish the importance of literacy, and limit TV/computer time to encourage children to get outside and play. Q: The Sue West Educator of the Year Award recognizes a teacher with passion and dedication in educating students as well as giving them inspiration to succeed. What is your guiding inspiration for instilling confidence and determination in your students? A. My guiding inspiration is based upon the premise that learning is a process and a journey that the children and I are on together. I believe in each child and their capacity to learn. To learn more about Project Connect, go to our website at hiltonheadchamber.org 4th grade students in Ms. Dillon’s class at Hilton Head Island International Baccalaureate Elementary School were happy to receive an electric pencil sharpener and other vital classroom supplies from Pino Gelato of Hilton Head. 2 CHAMBER BUSINESS MONTHLY | September 2010 Students in Ms. Keefer’s class at Red Cedar Elementary received classroom folders and supplies. Thanks to a donation from Walmart, students throughout southern Beaufort County received needed school supplies. Whether you’re building a new house or renovating an existing home, clean burning natural gas is your environmentally friendly energy choice. Natural gas appliances not only make everyday life better, they’re cost-effective to operate, generally last longer and require little maintenance. In addition to the actual environmental benefits of lower emissions, plus high-energy efficiency, more than 80% of the natural gas used in the U.S. is domestically produced. A home with natural gas reduces your impact on the environment without sacrificing comfort and convenience. If you want to make your home a little greener, while enjoying the comforts of home, ask for natural gas. To learn more, call Parks Moss at 843-815-8808 or Melanie Bullman at 843-815-8818.
