CookIES By dESIgN
Cookies by Design is
a busy place – mixing,
baking and delivering
cookies daily to the
Lowcountry, according to
owner Lou Anne Takach.
For Valentines Day, big
demand for “cookie
bouquets” means more than
a few hundred bouquets
will be bursting in gorgeous
sweet cookie flavors and
colors, bringing a whole
new meaning to the term
“sweetheart.”
What’s the most unusual cookie she’s created? “Have
to say the wedding cookies in the shape of the bride and
groom’s antique classic car – they were stunning!” said
Takach.
When it comes to America’s favorites, the classics are
just too hard to beat – Takach’s best-seller is a good, oldfashioned chocolate chip, followed by a close second –
snickerdoodle. Whatever your choice, Cookies by Design,
located in Berkeley Place, is sure to please.

ilton Head Island was recently cited in a Wall Street Journal
report on the rising market for vacation homes across the country. Sales
in many vacation communities soared last year to levels not seen since
boom times. Home sales on Hilton Head Island, S.C., rose 14% for the
year, stated the report.
The National Association of Realtors, quoted in the article, reported
one in 10 real-estate transactions in 2009 was for the purchase of a
vacation home. And though a small fraction of the overall market, it is
significant because vacation homes are often big-ticket properties and
attract discretionary buyers.

n a cold, wet day in January, a wounded Blue Heron was discovered
along the roadside in Shelter Cove Harbour by chamber staffers Brenda
Ciapanna and Kelly McCallister. With the assistance of Scott Henry of
Lowcountry Nature Tours and Greg Vittetoe from Kingfisher Restaurant,
they wrapped the huddled bird in a tablecloth and brought it to a local
veterinarian. In a matter of days, the Blue Heron recovered from its
injuries, most likely sustained by a road incident, and was released into
the wild, along the quieter banks of the May River.
