City of Burlington Facebook willows june 6 2016
City of Burlington, Ontario

We're sad, too...Two weeping willow trees near the gazebo in Spencer Smith Park will be removed
starting June 7 to ensure public safety in the waterfront park. The city's arborists found significant rotting
and decay in the trees during a recent investigation. The trees are beyond saving, but the city will keep 70
clippings of the historic trees for rooting and replanting, one for each year of the trees’ lives.

Janine Emma Lucas I LOVE that you will be replanting the clippings!! I assume it will be replanted
within the lakefront park still?

Sandy Jakubowski-McGregor Too bad the city didn't take clippings a few years ago and start rooting
trees for replanting. Maybe we should be doing this for older trees so that we already have a large tree to
transplant?

Rob Waller Thanks for the transparency. There might have been public outcry when they heard the
chainsaws otherwise.

Greg Burghall I remember playing with the branches as a kid and climbing as I got older. There's
something majestic and timeless with the willow trees. Sad to see them go but even trees grow old.

Jon Lawson the city should have been planting more trees along time ago. There needs to be more
shaded areas. I always have noticed that in the summer on hot days.

Kelly Flannery They are like family and it is so sad to have them gone. 70 clippings for each year is an
excellent respect. Because of those trees and a couple more in Burlington which I swung from as a child
Willows are my absolute favorite of all trees and they will be greatly missed.

Shelley Sterling The willow trees are the most majestic ! I have watched the grand daddy willow on New
st at Drury Lane , survive the strong storms that break a limb from him as this mighty willow still stands !
It's very sad about the Spencer willows, I always grieve a giant tree that is cut down. Marianne Meed
Ward thank you for the caring updates .

Adria Di Maggio On my grandparents farm we had a beautiful old willow tree. Had many family dinners
under it and many memories of climbing up through it. It grew for 50 years and one morning after a a
really windy thunder storm, it split down the middle and crushed everything around it. They're special
trees- but eventually their heavy branches bring them down. Glad to hear they'll be replanted.

Jan Wiffin Cousens How will the city. Provide shade until something grows big enough? The park can
be very hot especially when there are events going on.

they are able to start the trees life all over again

Tim Baker Its definitely a shame to loose those big gorgeous trees. Its better to be safe but it will be a bit
tricky to find shade in Spencer Smith park now.

Lynn Nagy There is no tree in my thoughts more beautiful then the weeping willow. Hopefully the cuts
they take will bring them back in the future that they will once again bring beauty to the area.

Sally Hewitt What about the creatures who call those willow trees home?
The birds nests, the squirrels .... Will they be looked after as the chain saws destroy these beautiful trees?
I am sure there are raccoons who sleep in the branches... Will they be left to fall to the ground as the
limbs are cut?...See more

John Clodge So very sad. Great memories for all of us burlingtonians around that tree in one way or
another. It would be a great idea if they had a display with a section showing the rings and pointing out
some dates and events that happened around it?.

Sally Bowskill Sadly that tree is well known for rotting. Our neighbour refused to cut theirs down even
though we knew it would fall. Surely enough it came down and took down half of our tree. So best to cut
it down for safety of everyone even though it is such a lovely tree.

Similar reaction when it was removed.

Caroline Fillion A weeping willow is relatively short-lived compared to some trees. The maximum
average lifespan is 50 years, although in ideal conditions, a weeping willow may live as long as 75 years.

Patty L Simpkin-Richmond It is sad, but I do understand tree's become old and they have to come
down. We lost our 55 year old birch tree due to carpenter ants 2 years ago. I do love that fact you'll be
replanting the clippings, so the Willow Tree will live on, just not where were used to seeing it!

Roger Alessandro Maybe they could leave part of the trunk and have someone carve something beautiful
into it. Or maybe if there is enough salvageable wood use it to build a bench or picnic table.

beautiful site over the gazebo. There has to be a way to save it.

Vince Fiorito I understand that many people consider Weeping Willows to be beautiful. I get that many
people have an emotional attachment to this particular tree. But this tree has reached the end of its life and
has to removed for safety reasons.
I sincerely hop...See more

deal with an accident later. Glad they're going to keep some clippings to replant the trees.

environment to take it down too. I love that they will be replanting it to give it new life.
