Persian walnuts we buy in the store, but it is
edible and, from what I’ve read, has good
flavour. It is very difficult to extract from the
tough shell, though, which is why it isn’t
available commercially.

When your last dirt-beneath-the-fingers experience was being splashed by
a bus driving too close to the sidewalk,
it might be time to remember the therapeutic properties of gardening.
But for urban residents who fear their
minuscule or nonexistent yards rule out
gardening, be encouraged: Big arranging ideas can sprout in small spaces.
Here are a few suggestions.
THE CONTAINER GARDEN
Getting a diverse plant mix is key to
creating an eye-catching potted garden,
whether rooted in an easy-to-water
hanging basket or in a window planter
on public display.

The thriller should be a dramatic vertical plant, like an upright cactus, that
sets the horticultural scene. Lush vegetation such as Creeping Jenny, that
flows over the front of the container,
serves as the spiller. And the filler is
everything in-between: mid-sized flowering or leafy plants, like lobelia, that
draw the eye from the thriller to the
spiller.
Make the container look lush by planting tightly, with leaves intertwining
and bulbs, if used, almost touching.
Tip: Water until the water pours
through the holes in the container’s
bottom to ensure that roots grow all the
way down.

outlet. For more freedom in placing the
garden, try a solar-powered fountain.
THE WATER GARDEN
Ponds and waterfalls give a peaceful
feeling. A small-space landlubber can
recreate that serenity in a whiskey barrel or clay pot with a watertight liner.
Like their earthbound cousins, nautical plants perform differently based on
whether they’re placed in the sun or

stay frost-free in the winter. They can be
zipped in plastic bags and stored in a
cool location until green spikes start to
pop out in the spring.
THE HERB GARDEN
This container favourite has it all: elegance, fragrance and flavour.
Most herbs respond well to transplanting and can be purchased in a
starter pot to be moved to a container.
Parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, basil
and chives all work this way. Cilantro,
however, is averse to transplanting and
must be started from seed.
Most herbs can grow placidly side-byside in the same container. The more
aggressive mint and oregano are exceptions and need their own pots to prevent them from crowding out more delicate spices.
A little basic arithmetic is required for
raising healthy herbs. Each plant generally needs 15 centimetres of growing
space, so divide the container accord-
ingly. A 90-centimetre container can
hold six herbs, for example. When
planting the herbs, leave five to 10 centimetres of space between the top of the
soil and the rim of the box, as the soil
may rise slightly during watering.
Tip: It may drive sales people crazy,
but check the herbs’ roots at the garden
centre before buying. They should be
white and unbroken. Don’t buy a plant
if its roots are brown or smell woody.
Herbs crave natural light, so consider
growing them in a box outside the
kitchen window. That way, they get
their sun while staying accessible for
spur-of-the-moment culinary needs.
THE GROW BAG GARDEN
The down-home favourite that most
city folks assume they have to forgo is
the vegetable garden, but growing
tomatoes as sweet as the ones from
your mother’s back yard is possible
with the help of grow bags.
These are simply bags of soil to set up
on concrete side yards, apartment terraces or any place where there’s no natural dirt. Tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant
and peppers all work in grow bags, as
do herbs. The bags can be useful for
planning when you’re still deciding
where to establish a permanent garden.
To set up, make a teepee of dowels, or
put up a tomato cage for growing support. Then plant carefully. Make sure
the roots are not exposed, but don’t
bury the plant so deeply that the stem
gets suffocated.
Cut holes in the bags to let excess
water drain, because frequent watering
is needed. A drip-irrigation system can
ensure plants get enough water while
minimizing the amount of time you
spend bent over a heavy watering can.
“I know the irrigation system can
sound like a big investment and hassle,” Zachos said, “but starter kits are
inexpensive and can free up so much of
your time.”
Finally, if the bags’ garish colours
clash with your earthy deck chairs, surround them in black garbage bags to
tone them down and trap in heat.
At the end of the season, cleanup will
be easy: Just throw out the grow bags or
dump their contents in a compost heap.

just as enamoured with green buzzwords as the food and fashion worlds
have, and “sustainable wood” is one of
the most common marketing cries.
(Crate and Barrel makes that particular
sofa for earth out of not just wood that
is certified by the Sustainable Forestry
Initiative but also from “revolutionary,
bio-based materials that are environmentally renewable.”)
Some wood, of course, is more sustainable than others. Here’s what you
need to know.
◆ Generally, sustainable wood means
wood harvested from carefully managed forests or reclaimed from old
buildings or furniture.
“There are a number of programs that
certify the way timber is cut down and
used,” said Deb Snoonian, executive
editor of Plenty magazine, which covers green topics. “They have guidelines
on how forests should be managed and
the idea is that you never want to clearcut a forest.”
◆ Look for proper certification, often
in the form of a label.
The most stringent of these programs,
she said, is run by the Forest Stewardship Council. “The FSC guidelines are
the ones most environmental groups
trust,” Snoonian said.
The FSC offers a searchable database
of certified vendors, says Katie Miller,
the organization’s U.S. communications
director.
◆ Ask where the wood comes from.
Even without certification, customers
can assume that most wood grown in
North America is likely to be harvested
in an environmentally safe way, said
Ron Jarvis, vice-president of environmental innovation at The Home Depot,
which sells some FSC-certified wood.
“If you’re buying Southern yellow
pine or redwood or cedar, probably it’s
OK without certification,” he said.

have been harvested in countries lacking stringent environmental rules,
Jarvis added.
“If you’re going in to buy a wood
product and you’re not familiar with
the name or it’s a name that usually
means rain forest, like teak, ask for an
FSC-certified product,” he said
Bill Banzhaf, president of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, one of the country’s largest certifying organizations,
says the more customers ask about sustainable wood, the more it will create a
market for good practices.
“There is a great deal of material out
there. Sometimes it’s not labeled
because a manufacturer doesn’t want to
confuse the consumer, or wants to support their own brand.”
Besides certification, Banzhaf says the
SFI’s program also trains loggers —
97,000 so far — to harvest wood in an
environmentally safe way.
◆ Check out products made from
bamboo.
It’s a fast-growing wood, so bamboo
forests replenish themselves quickly.
And it requires little pesticide or fertilizer. It works well for lightweight items
like decorative tables, but may not be a

emitter (water-distribution device). Then plug
one end of a piece of drip
tubing into the emitter
head, and run the drip
tube along the base of
your plants, securing the
other end with a rock or
small stake. Turn it on.
Instead of a flow, you’ll
see only a tiny drip that
will be gentle on both
blooms and plants.
When most of us think
of outdoor watering, we
think of a hose with a
sprinkler on the end or a
sprinkler system. We
think of covering lawn
and garden with an
ample spray of tap water.
Unfortunately,
spray
watering can be extremely wasteful. An average
landscape can consume
more water in a day than
a family of four needs in
a month. And, this type
of watering is not effective for many kinds of
plant growth. Lawns,
trees, shrubs and flowers
all have different needs.
What’s worse, conventional sprinklers that irrigate planting strips bor-
related problems ranging
from mould and mildew
to peeling paint and even
a shifting foundation. The
latter is particularly serious since it can result in
out-of-level floors, difficult-to-open
windows
and doors, and cracks in
walls and ceilings and in
the foundation itself.
So, save water and your
foundation by converting
the sprinkler system bordering the home with a
drip-irrigation or dripwatering system.
Drip-watering systems
have been around for a
long time, but not until
recently
have
they
become readily available
and priced to sell. Now
you can find an entire
area dedicated to dripwatering systems in your
local hardware store or
home centre.
Better manufacturers
offer accurate water-pressure regulators, highquality filters, automatic
inline fertilizing devices,
a broad selection of water
emitters and connectors,
solid and perforated tubing and a variety of
watering heads and flow
reducers.
Prices may range from
US$10 for a basic starter
kit to US$75 for a more
complex system that may
include tubing, emitters,
stakes, watering heads
and flow reducers.

With the right parts you can
control water usage to within
amazingly accurate tolerances
and fertilize at the same time
without even being there. And a
great advantage of drip systems
is that they don’t have to be
placed deep underground so
installation is easy.
It isn’t necessary, but if you can
afford to include it in your budget, the place to start is with an
electric timer. Most yards can be
controlled with a six-station unit
and they can be purchased on
sale for under US$40. Timers
operate on 110 volts, but use a
very small amount of electricity.
Secondary wires from the timer
are low voltage and run from the
timer to electrically controlled
sprinkler valves. Inline timers
are also available for single line
systems.
In planning a drip system, a
water-pressure regulator is a
must and should be installed
in the water line between the
water supply and the control
valves. Good drip systems rely
on constant, well-regulated water pressure.

"Closing the deal" is when the ownership
of the property is transferred from the
seller to you and most times it's also when
you take possession of your home.
Closing takes place once all the parties in
the transaction are satisfied that all the
legal and financial obligations have been
fulfilled. Your REALTOR® and your lawyer
will take care of many of the requirements
and will guide you through the process of
closing.
You will have an active role in this process
too doing things like arranging financing,
home inspections, insurance, change of
address and moving arrangements, but
the first item on your list will be to get a
signed copy of the Agreement of Purchase
and Sale to your lawyer. Your lawyer will
want to see the date you and the seller
agreed upon to close as well as any conditions in the offer.
Conditions in the offer need to be met on
specific dates so it's important that you
begin satisfying them right away. Most
lawyers won't start the closing process
until all of the conditions have been satisfied and waived from the offer. As each
condition is met, your REALTOR® will have
your sign a waiver removing the condition
from the agreement.
Your lawyer will then begin a title search
on the property to be sure the seller has
clear title and can transfer it to you
without a problem. Hydro, gas and
water companies will also be contacted
by your lawyer to ensure there are no
outstanding claims for unpaid bills
before these utilities are transferred to
your name.
Other tasks your lawyer will perform
include gathering reports, certificates and
clearances from various government
offices, ensuring the property taxes are
up-to-date, local zoning and building
restrictions have been met and there are
no outstanding obligations or "liens" on
personal property to be sold with the
house. In other words, your lawyer will
make sure you get what you agreed to
buy.
Finally, your lawyer will review and verify
the draft deed which is the document that
transfers ownership from the seller to you
and deal with any problems should they
arise. A day or two before closing, you will
meet with your lawyer to review and sign
the closing documents. You will be asked
to provide a certified cheque to cover the
costs involved.
On closing day, both lawyers will
exchange documents, keys and cheques
and your deed and mortgage will be registered at the local registry office. If all
goes according to plan, you will be given
the keys to your new home.

meet the standard. The townhouses
will incorporate recycled materials,
on-demand German-designed hot
water systems (so you're not paying
to heat water when you don't need
it), plastic ductwork for heating and
cooling and insulation where you
would not normally find it, such as
the garage door.
Natural gas is the heating and
cooking fuel, of course, which is
both more energy efficient and less
expensive than other fuels, and windows are all low-E argon filled. It's
interesting to note that Energy Star
rated housing reduces greenhouse
gas emissions by about three tonnes
per year, while Canada's goal is for
every household to reduce by one

A deck is currently being built outside the garden door off the living
room. Big windows in both living
and dining rooms bring in lots of
natural light.
The master bedroom is located on
the main floor and has a big ensuite
bathroom with one-piece Mirolin
tub and shower enclosure. Moen
pressure balance faucets are also
energy efficient, and while you're in
there, take a look at the double
crown mouldings in the bathroom!
The same moulding is seen in the
two-piece washroom on this floor.
It's unique touches such as this that
have earned PBG its reputation for
excellence. The nine-foot ceiling and
two big double closets are bonuses
in the bedroom.
On the wall outside the master
bedroom is a neat control set-up for
the main mechanics of the house,
such as humidity level, fireplace and
fan and timer. It also shows the
heating and cooling of the house,
so you can program time and day
you want it turned on. The house is
also pre-wired for a security system
and has central air conditioning as
standard features. There is also a
rough-in for central vacuum.
The basement is ready to finish
but is fully insulated and divided
into what could be a home office or
rec room and another bedroom.
The ceiling is 8.5 feet high and
there's a rough-in for another bathroom as well as another laundry.
The concrete floor was saw-cut, so
there are none of the usual hairline
cracks. There's a manifold system
by the forced air gas furnace to
allow easy access to gas valve connections for all gas appliances. And
there's that tiny control box for the
on-demand hot water system - not a
hot water tank in sight - so you only
pay for the amount of water you
heat and you will never run out of
hot water!
Now look up into the ceiling and
you will see the plastic waterline
system. It's quiet to run - virtually a
silent system, with no clanking or
banging. The floors are silent, too,
as they are all screwed as well as
nailed down. Another thing to check
out is the sump pump, with its
innards underground and so invisible — no unsightly pipes.
Now head upstairs and onto the
second floor, where a sitting room is
situated outside the two bedrooms.
The bedrooms both have walk-in
closets and ensuite access to the
bathroom, though the toilet and
bath have a privacy door, so the
two washbasins can be used independently.
Another unique touch: Switches have been positioned beside
the beds for easy control of bedside lamps and there's wiring and
control for a television.

f you turn on a faucet and all you
get is a trickle, or streams squirting left and right, the problem
might not be in your faucet at all. It
might be the small device on the
end of the spout called an aerator.
It’s there to mix air into the water
stream and to provide an even,
splash-free flow. But its screen traps
all kinds of debris, from rust particles to calcium deposits. Over time,
this debris gradually cuts the flow,
leaving only a dribble or weak pressure.
The solution is an easy one. First:
To unscrew the aerator, wrap it
with masking tape to protect the
surface, then use pliers for a solid
grip. Once it’s off, remove the gunk
from the screen (soak overnight in
vinegar, if needed) and screw it
back on.

ighly hyped kitchen products
often disappoint. That’s the
message in Consumer Reports’
2007 August issue, in its annual
kitchen package. The magazine’s tests
found shortcomings in many highly
promoted, costly items. Often an old
standard proved the better choice.
Robert Markovich, the magazine’s
home and yard editor, pointed to
sometimes unimpressive overall performance of new multifunction appliances, as one example. With something like a multimedia refrigerator,
“You should really be sure it’s good at
its primary job,” he said. That may be
all you need from it.
The magazine’s 10 most-hyped
kitchen products list also includes prostyle ranges, turbocharged dishwashers, and pricey faucets and sinks.
The editors also warn of watching
the word “green” carefully.
Markovich’s advice: “Enter into it
with your eyes open, be aware of all
the pros and cons,” and with green
products “remember, you still have to
take performance into account.”

organizations worldwide. Maku also
runs a scholarship program for young
people in Bali, to promote the benefits
of a good education.
“The ample production availability
and truly artisan Indonesian craftsmanship as well as natural resources
and, of course, great waves led me to
Indonesia,” West explained by e-mail,
adding lightheartedly: “I say this in
jest but one of the underlying reasons
why we started this company was to
help fund our global surf exploration
and enjoy the incredible surf Indonesia
has to offer.”

Contemporary Furniture Fair in New
York City in May, one piece has its

available as seeds than as plants.
So look around at other gardens and at your
own garden and decide just what perennial
flowers you want to grow. Deciding what to
plant may be the hardest part of growing
perennial flowers from seed.
To keep an extra-close eye on your seedlings,
plant the seeds in pots or, even better, old plastic cell packs of the type in which nursery
seedlings are sold. Before sowing, fill your
containers with moistened, sifted potting soil.
As with vegetable seeds, perennial flower
seeds each have their own germination
requirements. You might find this information
on the seed packet or in the seed catalogue,
along with information about how long you’ll
be drumming your fingers waiting to see
sprouts.
Neither gayfeather nor anise hyssop seeds,
for instance, like to be more than slightly covered, and both sprout quickest at temperatures from the low teens C to low 20s C.
Lupin seeds also like that temperature range,
but need to be nicked with a file so they can
absorb water, then given a good covering of
soil.
Soak planted containers in a pan of water,
cover them to hold in moisture, and then settle in for the Big Wait.
By late summer, those seeds will have
sprouted and the seedlings will be ready to
transplant out to their permanent homes in
the garden. With cooler, moister autumn
weather around the corner, plants will need
little care beyond an initial watering-in. This
timing allows roots enough time to grab
tight hold of the soil before winter.
One problem with growing perennials from
seed is trying to figure out what to do with all
the extra plants you’re bound to get from even
a single seed packet. You may end up in the
nursery business yourself.

Country Home magazine’s July issue features the magazine’s 13th annual list of the
top 10 collectibles.
The magazine’s editorial team confers with
top antiques dealers to build the list, a magazine spokeswoman says. Editors and dealers base the list on what they see at shows
and markets, what is popular out there and
what people are buying.
But the editors also lean toward items that
are up-and-coming and not completely collected up, that dealers expect will continue
to grow in popularity over the next year.

10. Folk art dogs: As doorstops, chalkware
and wood toys, they honour everyone’s best
friend. Dog collectibles are available from
US$25 for a chalkware figurine to thousands of
dollars for cast-iron statues, says dealer Rick
Ege. Place them around your house for “a little
whimsy to make everyone smile,” Ege says.
