ROUTINE
MAINTENANCE
PROGRAM
COMPLETED
The 48-inch pipes have been transported from the marshalling area
to site, stockpiled and ready for the next stage of the project
The partial shutdown
allowed essential
maintenance work to be
carried out on the Stream 1
facilities of the Dolphin gas
processing plant and one
production platform at Ras
Laffan in Qatar.
Once the work was
completed as planned,
a gradual increase in
the supply of natural
gas through the Export
Pipeline linking Qatar
with the UAE took place.
The company gradually
ramped up production
and achieved its regular
maximum throughput of 2
billion standard cubic feet
of natural gas per day (bcf/
day) on March 1, 2009.
DOLPHIN RECEIVES
‘GAS SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR’ AWARD
The Institute of Gas
Engineers & Managers
(IGEM) has awarded Dolphin
Energy the ‘Gas Supplier of
the Year’ award which was
bestowed on the company
at the recent City Gas
Middle East and North Africa
Summit.
The event was convened in
Abu Dhabi to discuss the
challenges of developing
the downstream gas market
to ensure delivery of clean
energy for transport,
residential, industrial and
commercial needs.
Announced at a ceremony
during the gala dinner, which
was sponsored by both
ADNOC and GASCO, the
presentation was made to
Ahmed Matar Al Mazrouei,
Dolphin’s Vice President Marketing and Commercial.
He said: “This award
recognizes the role we play
in delivering gas from Qatar
to the UAE and Oman. It is a
proud moment for all Dolphin
Energy employees.
“In just nine short years,
Dolphin has developed into
one of the world’s leading
gas production, processing
and supply companies.
Thanks to the commitment
of the governments of Abu
Dhabi and Qatar and our
employees, the company’s
contribution to the supply of
gas to the Southern Gulf is
well known.”
There was extensive media
interest in the procedure,
with various contradictory
claims being made about
the company’s intentions.
AFP UPDATE
In order to improve the
level of public safety and
enhance protection along
the Al Ain-Fujairah Pipeline
(AFP), Dolphin Energy
decided to fence parts of
the buried pipelines.
Installation of the welded
mesh fencing is taking
place between the Oman UAE border and the Al Ain
control station. More than
9,770 supporting posts
have been cast into the
foundations and are being
moved to site.
Around 70kms of the AFP
route is to be fenced. The
AFP is divided into six
Zones. Zone 1, Zones 2
and 3A will be fenced while
Zone 6 will have 4.5km of
guardrail security barriers.
The remaining Zones
– Zones 3B, 4 and 5 – are
being assessed based
on risk and locations and
a decision on the fencing
work will be made once
TRANSCO has completed
the construction of its third
water pipe.
This Project is scheduled to
be completed by February
2010.

a regular feature of the
energy industry worldwide.
This pre planned temporary
shutdown was undertaken to
ensure the highest standards
of safety, maintenance and
environmental protection in
all areas of the company’s
business,” an official
statement from Dolphin

Dolphin also unveiled its
brand new corporate stand
at the event. Measuring some
200 square metres, the stand
allows visitors to track the
development and growth of the
project through visually striking
information boards. A series
of interactive touch screens
feature on demand data and
facts and figures that track the
project’s history.
BOARD MEETING AT TAWEELAH
Dolphin’s participation
illustrates its ongoing
commitment to supporting
cultural initiatives and
endorses Abu Dhabi
government’s plans to
develop the emirate into a
leading destination for arts
and culture.
Dolphin took stand space at
the event and was able to
display its two publications,
Dolphin and Coral. “One of
the themes of the Book Fair
was to get people into books.
I believe that our publications
contributed to that objective.
They also illustrate our
commitment to furthering
awareness and safeguarding
natural habitats and marine
life,” said Mr. Ibrahim Ahmed
Al Ansari, Dolphin’s GM in
the UAE.
To coincide with its support
of the book fair, Dolphin
Energy ran a literary
competition for employees
with the top prize of 10
AED500 book vouchers,

Dolphin’s values captured on the trophy
The final tranche of Dolphin’s
program to revamp its
mission, vision and values
took place at the end of last
year.
The program was initiated
to support the company’s
transition from a project to
an operational phase and

“This has been an important
process because we have
ensured that our employees
were kept informed about
these important changes.
It is paramount that
employees buy into the
vision, mission and values
and their feedback has been
essential,” said Dolphin’s GM
– UAE, Ibrahim Ahmed Al
Ansari.
To help entrench the new set
values into every working
aspect, Perspex trophies in
the shape of a number 1,
with the acronym F.I.R.S.T
written to reflect the new
values – fiscal responsibility,
integrity, respect, social
responsibility and teamwork
for excellence – were given
to each employee.
“The trophies serve as a
reminder that we are all
accountable in ensuring
our values, together with
the mission, vision and
behaviors, are upheld at
all times,” added Dolphin’s
GM – Qatar, Adel Ahmed
Albuainain.
The workshops invited
employees to interpret what
the values meant to them. “It
was encouraging to see so
many employees bringing
the values to life, whether by
acting out a scene or singing
a song,” concluded Fares
Chemouni, VP, Corporate
Affairs.

to play and essential part in
the development of the LNG
industry. This is reflected in
the country’s ability to supply
LNG and help lead the
globalization of the natural

sign copies of CORAL to mark the launch in Doha
As part of the company’s
ongoing efforts to profile
the stunning and unique
research and photographic
work, “CORAL in the
Southeastern Arabian Gulf”,
Dolphin Energy unveiled
the book CORAL in Qatar
recently.
An official launch took
place on 3 March 2009
at the Qatari Ministry of
Environment who supported
the project in conjunction
with the Environment Agency
– Abu Dhabi (EAD). Project
management was provided
by the UAE’s Emirates
Wildlife Society in association
with The World Wide Fund
for Nature (EWS-WWF).
Technical support came from
the US based National Coral
Reef Institute (NCRI).
Introducing the publication,
Dolphin Energy’s General
Manager in Qatar, Mr.
Adel Ahmed Albunainain
explained: “The Arabian
Gulf is one of the
richest, rarest and most
distinctive of all earth’s
natural habitats. Since its
inception, Dolphin Energy’s
commitment to ensuring
environmental protection of
the Southeastern Gulf is well
known.
“Some of the most striking
images in the book feature
reefs in Qatari waters. Those
surrounding Halul Island, off
the northernmost reaches of
Qatar, boast the highest coral
species richness observed
throughout the study,” he
continued.
‘CORAL’ describes a
pioneering three year
investigation of regional
coral habitats & status
growths. The book reviews
the extensive range of coral
reefs lying in eastern Qatari
waters and Abu Dhabi. It
records and maps the reefs,
assesses their condition –
and the potential for recovery
of the degraded systems
– and explains how teams
of national researchers and
scientists in both Qatar and
Abu Dhabi were recruited
and trained.
The majority of the research
was conducted using the
University of Qatar’s R/V
Mukhtabar Albihar, a 25
meter research vessel
that provided the optimum
platform at sea. From the
ship, scientists were able
to map and assess the
condition of the reefs as well
as the potential for recovery
of those that were suffering
from degrading.
Building on the benefits
of mapping the coral, HE
Abdulla Bin Mubarak
Al Meadadi, Minister of
Environment in Qatar said:

EXXON MOBIL
OPEN 2009
Continuing its commitment
to supporting sporting
contests of international
renown, Dolphin Energy
was the bronze sponsor
of the recently held Qatar
ExxonMobil Open 2009.
The event, which has become
one of the highlights on the
Men’s ATP Tour, took place
from 5-10 January 2009 at the
Khalifa International Tennis &
Squash Complex.
In its 17th year, household
names such as Rafael Nadal,
Roger Federer, Andy Murray
and Andy Roddick were
competing for the first prize
of $183,000 and 250 ranking
points. In total, 32 players
entered the tournament, each
contributing to the wonderful
standards in play and
professionalism.
Dolphin took a stand in
the public village and the
company distributed tickets
to both VIP guests and
Dolphin staff who took the
opportunity to watch one of
the three matches that were
played everyday throughout
the tournament.
It was a tale of the ‘Andys’ in
the final when world number
four Andy Murray and world
number eight Andy Roddick
went head to head for the
title. Watched by a capacity
of 6,800, it was Murray
who came out on top with
a straight set demolition
winning 6-4, 6-2 to defend
his crown in what was his
14th career final.

For the second successive

Staffed by local, national

given a background brief
on the company’s support
to the local community and
were informed about the
company’s corporate social
responsibility program which
focuses on the areas of
health, safety, environment,
education and sport.
It was the second time
that the company was the
‘Presenting Sponsor’ at the
Commercialbank Qatar
Masters golf tournament
which boasted the strongest
field yet in its 12 year
history. Indeed, it was the
most prestigious list of
players to come together
for a European Tour event,
aside from golf’s four major
championships.
Doha Golf Club provides
wonderful facilities and a
good test of golf for the
players. Both Dolphin’s
guests and the galleries
were treated to a spectacle
from players such as Sergio
Garcia, Lee Westwood,
Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson,
Damien McGrane, Retief
Goosen, Adam Scott, Louis
Oosthuizen and Miguel Angel
Jimenez.
Three players – Englishmen
Lee Westwood, Paul Casey
(who was fresh from his
victory in Abu Dhabi the
week before) and the
South African James
Kingston – were the playing
professionals making up
numbers in the three Dolphin
teams that entered the
annual Pro Am tournament.
Each team acquitted itself
well with star performances
from Walid Attalah, who
was playing with Maurizio
La Noce and Nick Baker.
(Nick had another chance
to demonstrate his golfing
prowess to Paul Casey).
Colin Sewell also seemed to
match Lee Westwood with his
driving distances – though
sadly he was not as accurate
as the Ryder Cup star.
The tournament proper got
under way on 22 January
and over the course of
the next four days, some
phenomenal golf was played
by the pros – undeterred
even when the weather took
a surprising turn for the
worse on the morning of the
second day.
The eventual winner was
big hitting Spaniard Alvaro
Quiros who with a total score
of 269 (19 under) secured
his third European Tour
victory and became the 11th
different winner in the 12
years the event has been
taking place.

DOLPHIN HELPS EMPLOYEES KEEP WELL
As part of a company wide
initiative to highlight the
importance of wellness,
Dolphin Energy has
been running a series
of workshops at its four
locations – Abu Dhabi, Doha,
Taweelah and Ras Laffan.
Current wellness workshop
subjects include Nutrition
and Stress Management.
In a new development the
workshops were also open
to extended family members
of Dolphin employees, with
many taking the opportunity
to benefit from the offer.
NUTRITION
Dolphin’s Occupational Health
Supervisor, Charlene Carter
visited the sites and gave a
presentation on the importance
of nutrition and outlined the
interrelationship between diet
and physical activity.
According to statistics from

the World Health Organization,

a year were attributed to low
fruit and vegetable diets while
1.9 million were caused by low
physical activity.
common diet myths. Tips for
exercise, including using simple
everyday tasks in order to
achieve fitness, were provided.
Carter’s presentation provided
tips on how to balance food
intake in achieving a healthy
diet. “The key aspect to
remember is that this is about
changing mindsets. Healthy
eating is about striking a
balance and ensuring that
this approach becomes part
of your lifestyle. Everything in
moderation is always best,”
she explained.
Stress refers to a broad class
of problems that deal with any
demands which tax the system
– be it social, psychological
or physiological. The recent
workshop highlighted the
symptoms that manifest
themselves across physical,
mental and behavioral
patterns:
Carter advised that we look
at healthy alternatives when
we can. “It is best to limit your
intake of fatty acids and sugar
and salt and look at increasing
fruit and vegetables.
The second part of Carter’s
presentation focused on physical
activity and gave tips on how
to lose weight while dispelling
STRESS MANAGEMENT
Physical – increased heart
rate, high blood pressure,
dizziness, migraine, stomach
ulcers and nausea
Mental – difficulty in
concentration and making
decisions, impaired memory
and increased negative and
self critical thoughts
Behavioral – social withdrawal,
difficulty in sleeping, increased
irritability and alteration in
food intake
People can suffer from
stress because of life events
that change in severity,
a lack of social support
or a challenging work
environment.
An important distinction
made was the assertion
that stress levels varied
depending on people’s ability
to handle anxiety. Those
attending the workshop were
taken through some practical
steps on how best to manage
their stress levels from
facilitating decision making,
problem solving to being
more assertive.
Other strategies for coping
with stress included
overcoming sleeping
difficulties, time management,
problem solving and decision
making, being more assertive,
physical exercise, a balanced
diet and setting goals.
WHY SAVE WATER?!!
Surrounded by green
gardens and protected
from the searing sun by
air conditioning, it is easy
for people in the Arabian
Peninsula to forget that they
are living in one of the world’s
most arid and unforgiving
climates. Both the UAE
and Qatar are amongst the
poorest countries in the world
when it comes to renewable
freshwater resources per
capita. And yet, residents
of both countries have
some of the highest water
consumption rates in the
world.
This has been possible
because of desalination and
a groundwater reserve that
accumulated over thousands
of years. However, at the
current rate of consumption,
we only have a few years
left before our groundwater
reserves are depleted;
desalination is a very costly
alternative when considering
the economical and
environmental impact.
Desalination plants consume
substantial amounts
of energy to produce
freshwater. In the process,
pollutants that cause Global
Warming are emitted to
the atmosphere and hot
brine that contains a very
high concentration of salt is

discharged to the sea. The
Arabian Gulf is one of the
naturally hottest and saltiest
bodies of water in the world.
This additional environmental
load is making the Gulf an
increasingly more difficult
place to live for its biological
inhabitants.
It is obvious that we cannot
continue to consume water
at the current rate without
detrimental effects to the
environment, society and the
economy. However, we can
unlock economic benefits of
being water efficient. There
are many examples of water
efficiency that have little or
no cost:
• Simply closing the faucet
when brushing teeth
can save eight liters per
minute
• Install efficient
showerheads and faucet
reducers and aerators to
cut 80% of water use
• Fix leaks. If your faucet
is dripping one drop per
second, it will accumulate
to 12,000 liters per year
• Only use washing
machines and dish
washers when full
• Reuse water when
possible (e.g. after
washing vegetables,
residue water can be
used for irrigating flowers)
• Place balloons or plastic
bottles in the toilet tank.
This will reduce the
holding capacity of the
tank and save water
• Wash cars with a bucket
not a hose. It will make a
huge difference
• Landscape your garden
with native vegetation that
does not require much water
Saving water at home, in
the garden, or at work takes
little effort, but makes a big
difference.
THE PERFECT MATCH
As part of its commitment
to supporting cultural and
sporting initiatives Dolphin
is continuing its sponsorship
of Al Jazira Sports Club.
The company has made
a substantial financial
commitment to the capital’s
leading football club.
“Professionalism, teamwork
and unstinting commitment
are values that we support
here at Dolphin. These are
values that are synonymous
to Al Jazira and shared here

Ahmed Al Ansari, Dolphin’s
UAE General Manager, said
of Dolphin’s sponsorship.
Al Jazira is one of the most

SUSTAINABILITY MANAGEMENT
It was H.H. Sheikh Zayed
Bin Sultan Al Nahayan who
stated:
“The process of growth,
building and development
does not rely on those
who hold positions of
responsibility but needs the
collective efforts of every
citizen and resident of this
state”.
Dolphin Energy’s
response has been to
embed Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) as part
of our ongoing business
model from 2009. Adopting
CSR principles is helping
us to operate a profitable
and ethical business that
takes account of all the
environmental, social and
economic effects we have on
society.
Through a series of executive
workshops we have redefined
our corporate vision and
values to meet the challenge.
Similarly, we have identified
those behaviours we wish to
enhance with our staff and
suppliers as part of sustaining
CSR within Dolphin Energy.
These principles have been
transferred to our staff work
stations through our innovative
3D pyramid desk models.
To underline our commitment to
ethical business practices, we
have instituted a corporate code
of business conduct (CBC)
which applies to all staff across
all our business activities,
irrespective of location.
Our updated and recently
implemented QHSE
Management System,
recognises management
commitment to CSR and
highlights the importance of
lessons learned, knowledge
sharing and stakeholder
dialogue as important tools to
optimise our ongoing business
practices and productivity.
Besides our traditional
philanthropic contributions and
support for the arts, sciences,
national development and
education, Dolphin Energy
is actively engaging in
stakeholder dialogue and
community engagement,
particularly as TFP
construction activities intensify.
As part of our stakeholder
engagement strategy for
global warming, Dolphin
Energy is in active dialogue
with regulators to optimise
emissions targets for Qatar
and UAE Operations and is
looking at ways to reduce
utility consumption and our bio
economic footprint.
Dolphin Energy has been
appointed to the General
Secretariat of the Abu Dhabi
Sustainability Group and
is working closely with the
Environment Agency in Abu
Dhabi to encourage the take
up of sustainability within the
Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
In the meantime, Dolphin
Energy will continue to
focus on sustaining CSR
by meeting shareholder
expectations and maintaining
a business balance between
economic, societal and
environmental influences.
In this way Dolphin Energy is
helping to realise the vision
of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin
Zayed Al Nahayan, President
of the UAE and Ruler of Abu
Dhabi when he said:
“To achieve sustainable
development, build a
cohesive society and an
open economy capable of
global competitiveness”.

The manual revamp
coincided with the

NEW POLICY ALIGNMENT UNVEILED AT
G E N E R A L M A N A G E R S ’ S TA F F M E E T I N G
The first General Managers’
meeting of the year was
held on 5 March 2009.
Taking place at the Beach
Rotana Hotel, Ibrahim
Ahmed Al Ansari, General
Manager, Dolphin Energy,
UAE was joined by Adel
Ahmed Albuainain, General
Manager, Qatar and Fares
Chemouni, Vice President
Corporate Affairs.
This was the first in a
series of meetings planned
this year and Dolphin
Energy employees had the
opportunity to ask the senior
management team questions
on a range of subjects.
EMPLOYEE
ENGAGEMENT
SURVEY RESULTS:
Following words of welcome
from Mr. Al Ansari, Joe
Howard, Senior Manager,
HR and Administration,
gave a presentation to
employees on the Employee
Engagement Survey results
and the Schedule of Policy
Alignment.
“According to research,
companies need employee
engagement levels of 60%
or better to drive superior
business results. The survey
conducted shows that
Dolphin scored 72% meaning
that it was positioned in the
high performance zone.
This is very encouraging,”
explained Howard.
Based on the survey results
five key areas have been
identified as focus areas for
the company. These relate to
recognition, compensation,
career opportunities,
company reputation and
work tasks.
“We are already strong
in the areas of company
reputation and work tasks
but the negative impact on
employee engagement will
be substantial if we don’t
maintain focus in these
important areas,” added
Howard.
The top two action steps
taken from each area are:
Recognition – fair and
transparent recognition
programs and formalizing the
process of promotions from
within
Compensation – creating
a fair and transparent
compensation philosophy
and providing analysis and
performance management
linked to compensation
Career opportunities
– initiating a mentoring
program and developing
career opportunities and
succession planning for
nationals and expatriates
Company reputation
– providing donations to
benefit the community
and enhancing the level of
sponsorships
Work Tasks – maintaining
professional standards
and providing challenging
assignments and stretch
targets for employees
“To help focus on these
priorities and address
other areas that have been
identified in the survey,
we will be forming cross
functional teams to review
processes and provide
insight and input. The team
will perform an important
function because they
illustrate that to be successful
we need representation
from all the company. This
is about ensuring we are all
accountable and responsible
for making this work,” said
Howard.
The meeting was well attended by Dolphin employees who took the
opportunity to ask the senior management team questions during the
session
SCHEDULE FOR
POLICY ALIGNMENT
In the second part of his
presentation, Howard took
employees through an
update on the HR policy and
procedures schedule.
Meanwhile, an update
on work completed to
consolidate and align
policies and procedures was
supplied.
“It is important that we
incorporate best practices
across the UAE and Qatar
and ensure that all HR
policies are aligned between
both locations. We are one
company, one team with
one vision. Our policies and
procedures aim to reflect
that,” Howard maintained.
Following the presentation
Ibrahim Al Ansari, Adel
Albuainain and Fares
Chemouni took questions
from employees. The date of
the next General Managers’
meeting is slated for 3 June,
taking place at the Beach
Rotana Hotel.

an obligation to providing
opportunities for Nationals
to join and develop a career
with us. Their development is
critical to our future success.
Investment in our people now
means that our preparations
for tomorrow are built on solid
foundations.”
DELIVERING A NEW IT ENVIRONMENT
Dolphin Energy, in partnership
with Injazat Data Systems, has

IT Unified Environment
– the program will provide
a standardized corporate
structure that will enhance
communications between
Abu Dhabi and Doha and
their business lines, deliver
better accessibility to
resources and information
and offer faster problem
resolution through IT support.
DUNE relies on Injazat’s

where I worked initially as an

it helps to maximize

It is important to be seen

In life it is important to put

my family and I went on a
Trek to see the Angel Falls.
These are the world’s highest
and were named after their
discoverer, an American
called Jimmy Angel.
At over 900 meters high it
is truly inspiring. It requires
a four hour canoe journey
up river and an hour’s trek
through rain forest to get to
the splash pool at the base of
the falls.
Besides traveling my favorite
hobby is golf. I practice a
couple of times a week and
As a secondee I will
eventually leave Dolphin
Energy and go back to Total.
One day I may be lucky
enough to run my own mega
project. This would be my
fourth major assignment,
something that some
engineers are not fortunate
enough to experience.
When I retire, I would like to be
closer to home. I have my own
apartment in Edinburgh and
we’re thinking of buying another
house in the South of France.
With the arrival of my first
grand child, 2009 has
already been a big year.
This is set to continue as my
daughter is getting married
this summer.
Once I retire, I would like
to put something back in to
the community. I have been
very fortunate in my life and
I am thinking of doing some
voluntary work that I hope will
make a difference. Just like
my father, who taught elderly
people how to read after his
retirement.

ENCHANTED BY THE SPIRIT OF THE DESERT
Dolphin’s
Cultural Day
We were truly enchanted
by the spirit of the desert at
Dolphin’s annual cultural day.
For the occasion, the company
organized an evening’s
entertainment at the Al Sahra
Desert Resort in Dubai.
Employees and their families
were treated to traditional
Arabian entertainment with
camel riding, a falcon show
and souk activities.
Organizers of the event were
able to bring in a group of
local women from the Al
Ain Cultural Club to provide
Henna and traditional halwa
live cooking demonstrations,
much to the delight of us all.
Employees and their families
were then treated to a
sumptuous buffet dinner at the
resort’s restaurant, followed
by a showing of the highly
acclaimed Jumana…Spirit of
the desert.
In its third successful season,
this production features
Arabia’s spellbinding fables
and folk tales to narration by
Omar Sharif.
The hour long production
featured stunning audio-visual,
water, laser and fire effects,
elaborate acrobatics and a host
of wonderful illusions. As an
additional treat, fireworks were
also included in the production,
courtesy of Dolphin.
A magical time was had by
all. Thanks must go to the
corporate communications
team in Abu Dhabi for their
hard work in making the event a
success.
