Don’t speak? Gwen Stefani
can’t help it as she opens up
about her latest release – the
“record that saved my life.”
Featuring a multitude of diarylike outpourings related to Gavin
Rossdale, whom the No Doubt
frontwoman divorced in 2015
after 13 years of marriage, This Is
What the Truth Feels Like is
Stefani’s third solo album and first
since 2006’s The Sweet Escape.
“It’s so therapeutic to talk
about it,” she says the day before
the album’s release. “And I hope
it saves some other lives. I really,
really truly do hope that. That’s
the message I wanna give.”
During our candid tell-all,
Stefani also talked about her gay
besties who “made me look
pretty when I didn’t feel pretty,”
being a (mostly) respected
woman in a man’s world and how
she and boyfriend Blake Shelton
hang with the same “big posse”
of gays.
Chris Azzopardi: In the last year,
when the going got tough, which
gay friends of yours could you
count on to have the wine
cupboard fully stocked?
Gwen Stefani: Most of my gay
friends are talented, close people
who work with me: my
hairdresser, my makeup artist.
Those are probably my two
closest gay friends, and what I
love about them is how unique
they are and how spirited they are
and how talented they are. I think
“passionate” would be a really

good way to
describe them.
They’re not
representing all
gay men, but
they represent
the ones in my
life who’ve had
a huge impact
on me. I turned
to them this
whole time
period, during
my whole
tragedy, and
they have been
really, really
super
supportive and
loyal and made
me look pretty when I didn’t feel
pretty.
CA: How did collaborating with
Justin Tranter of Semi-Precious
Weapons, who’s gay, affect your
recording sessions for This Is
What the Truth Feels Like?
GS: I didn’t know who he was or
anything, but the thing that was
so great about working with
Justin was that he had followed
my career for the longest time. He
knew everything about every
song I’d ever done, whatever I’d
worn, every piece of jewelry. It
was like, whoa. And he’d wanted
to work with me for a long time
and I didn’t know that, but it was
like God put us in the same room
at the perfect time because I
needed his understanding and
compassion. He was so

supportive of me and so
confident in me, and I had lost a
lot of my confidence, so he really
brought that out of me. I felt so
comfortable around him from the
moment that I met him. So, he
was a huge support in making
this record and a good friend – an
instant friend, weirdly, because I
didn’t know him at all. But now I
feel like he’s one of my closest
friends.
CA: I don’t think it’s too far of a
stretch to say that any gay man
would instantly connect with you.
GS: Awww! That makes me
happy.
CA: Did Blake have to get your
gay friends’ approval?
GS: Well, I mean, Blake’s
definitely like – how would I
describe it? All the same people
all the time are always in the room
together and we do everything
together, so it’s like we’re all a big
posse. It’s funny, too, because
Blake’s mom was a hairdresser
growing up, so he was definitely
introduced to that world a looong
time ago.

GS: No, it’s crazy.
I’ve been so
unbelievably
blessed. I grew up
in a man’s world
and it really doesn’t
make any sense
either. In the past,
as a girl – a baby
girl – I was a girly
girl and I wasn’t
guyish at all, but
when I did discover
music, I really got
into this niche
music, which was
ska. I really related
to it. All of the
people who were
my mentors as far
as music, they were
all guys, and to be
in a band with my
brother (Eric
Stefani) and then
my boyfriend (Tony
Kanal), I was in this
little family and very
protected. I always
felt like my opinion
was counted, and
not even counted

CA: You’re known for your sonic
soul-barings, but lately, you also
seem especially candid in
interviews. Why did you decide to
be so open about your life in the
last year?
GS: Because I’m the kind of girl
that’s just not good with secrets. I
tell everybody

grew up Catholic, so
I just need to
confess everything.
I feel like I’ve always
been really open,
but there was a
point in my marriage
and in my
relationship (with
Gavin Rossdale) – because maybe we
born out of the ’90s
– it felt cooler and
more protected to
not talk about the
relationship, or it felt
awkward because
maybe we were
both doing the
same thing and I
didn’t wanna say
something and he’d
be like, “Why’d you
say that?!” There
were probably some
limits during that
relationship. And
then with my
children, obviously I
can’t talk about
them because
they’re gonna be 15
and like, “Mom, why
did you say that?
You’re embarrassing
me!” I have to think
a little bit about that
now. But I just
think… I don’t know
how else to be. Everybody knows
what happened to me. I got a
divorce. It’s the worst thing that
can happen to me besides death.
My whole life all I wanted to
do was be a mother and a wife,
and I had the dream of having this
family because that’s what I had. I
have parents who’ve been
married since high school, who
are in love, and they’re still in love
and having their big wedding
anniversary. I had a perfect
example, so it’s super tragic for
me. My dreams are shattered and
I feel so embarrassed about what
happened. I don’t feel
embarrassed to talk about it
though, with respect to my kids. I
just think what happened was: In
February (2015), my family fell
apart. It was devastating. I didn’t
know what to do. It was a real big
secret, but as I just explained, I’m
not good with that. I tried
everything to fix it. By June
(2015), I went into the studio and
started writing. I was praying. I
had already started on a spiritual
journey when I got pregnant with
Apollo (in 2013) that was sort of
like, “Wow, really? I’m gonna be
blessed with a baby... now?” That
was a miracle. It just started me
on this spiritual journey and thank
God it started then because I was
prepared when I had the tragedy.
I had that nest of spirituality in
me.
CA: They say everything happens
for a reason.
GS: And you kind of can’t see it
until you go through it and look
back at it and see all the signs. I
had the baby. Then I got The
Voice, which was so needed. I
needed to do something like that.
I needed to play that role, and I
also got in the room with Pharrell

grateful and to be spiritual and try
to do the best you can every
single day – to be in the moment.
I’m not thinking about the future.
I’m really trying to focus on right
now, today. I wanna be in the
moment right now because it’s so
much better if you’re not thinking
about the past or the future.
CA: Gwen, you have such a
healthy perspective on life.
GS: Oh, I have to work on it! I
work on it every single day. Some
days I’m a mental case.

Out at Wrigley will be held on Sunday, September 4th at
1:20pm vs the San Francisco Giants. There will be VIP
tickets in the Left Field Porch Deck for $75, which include a
gift bag, all you can drink beer, wine, soda and water. There
will also be general admission bleacher tickets $45 tickets.
Starting in April and running through late August, we
will be holding a contest to pick the National Anthem singer
and the person to throw out the Ceremonial First Pitch.

Make Passover Delicious and
Easy with Innovative Recipes

modern recipe book with dishes you
might see at the hip restaurant down
the street, but with others that
traditional cooks would embrace.
There are enough familiar recipes to
remind people of their childhoods,
but here they are updated, lighter
and more flavorful, without being
overly complicated.
This Passover try these healthy,
delicious and innovative recipes
from The New Passover Menu:
SHREDDED BRUSSELS SPROUTS
SALAD
Serves: 6–8
Prep Time: 20 minutes Advance Prep: May be made 1 day
in advance
Equipment: Cutting board • Knives •
Cookie sheet • Measuring cups and
spoons • Small bowl • Whisk
At every family meal, I make
sure to serve some raw vegetables
in addition to the cooked ones. You
will be surprised by how much you
like this crunchy salad of raw
Brussels sprouts.
• 1 pound (450g) Brussels sprouts
(preferably larger-size ones), ends
trimmed, 2 outer layers of leaves
removed
• 3/4 cup (115g) whole almonds,
toasted
• 1/2 small red onion, chopped into
small pieces (about 1/4 cup/40g)
• 3 tablespoons (45ml) fresh lemon
juice (from 1 lemon)
• 1/4 cup (60ml) extra virgin olive oil
• 1 tablespoon honey
• 1/8 teaspoon salt
• 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
CUT the Brussels sprouts in half

the top, and thinly slice. Place the
sliced sprouts in a bowl. Roughly
chop the toasted almonds and add
to the bowl, along with the chopped
onion. In a small bowl, whisk
together the lemon juice, oil, honey,
salt, and black pepper. Pour the
dressing over the salad and toss.
SEARED TUNA WITH OLIVE AND
CAPERS
Serves: 4–6
Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 6–8 minutes Advance

Large frying pan • Silicone spatula
My family consumes a lot of
sushi, so everyone is thrilled when I
have seared tuna on the menu at our
house. It is the quickest main dish to
prepare if you, like my children,
enjoy fresh tuna pretty raw; it cooks
in minutes. The olive and caper
relish has strong flavors, so I often
serve it on the side. Several
companies certify capers for
Passover, but if you cannot find
them, substitute green olives.
• 4 tuna steaks (6 ounces/170g
each)

• 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
• 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
• Black pepper
• 3 tablespoons (45ml) extra virgin
olive oil
• 3 tablespoons chopped red onion,
cut into
• 1/4-inch (6-mm) pieces
• 4 cloves garlic, chopped into 1/4inch (6-mm) pieces
• 3 tablespoons capers, drained, or
green olives, cut into 1/4-inch (6mm) pieces
• 1/3 cup (45g) green or black olives
(or a combination), cut into long
slivers
• 1/2 teaspoon sugar
SPRINKLE both sides of the
tuna steaks with the basil, thyme,
and pepper to taste. Heat a large
frying pan over high heat (do not
add any oil). When the pan is hot,
add the tuna steaks and cook for 1
to 1 1/2 minutes on each side, just
long enough to sear the outside.
Leave the center raw, unless you
prefer tuna cooked all the way
through.
REMOVE the tuna steaks to a
plate. Reduce the heat to medium
and add the oil. Add the red onion
and garlic and cook for 2 minutes,
stirring often. Add the capers, olives,
sugar, and pepper to taste and cook
for 1 minute. Remove the pan from
the heat.
PLACE the tuna steaks on a
cutting board and slice into 1/3- to
1/2-inch-thick (8- to 12-mm)
slices.Place the slices on a platter
and sprinkle the caper and olive
mixture on top, or serve it alongside
in a small bowl.

Q: How long have you owned The
Twisted Vine?
Jeff Durbin: We are coming up on
our third anniversary in May. Before
we became The Twisted Vine, we
were a retail store called The
Gourmet Grape in the same
location for ten years. In total, we
have been in business for 13 years.
Q: What made you want to switch
from a retail shop to a bar?
JD: It was customer driven. A lot of
customers were asking me to sell
wine by the glass, so after ten years
doing retail, I decided it was time
for a change! We didn’t have a wine
bar in the neighborhood, especially
one with a piano and live music. I
thought it would be a great addition
to the neighborhood.
Q: How long have you been in the
wine industry?
JD: I started drinking wine in my
early twenties, and loved it ever
since. Going to Napa Valley and
experiencing the wine country, I just
fell in love with it. When I decided
to open my store, I knew I was
going to sell wine. Now as a bar
owner, wine is still the foundation of
my business.
Q: What is
something The
Twisted Vine does
that is unique?
JD: I think we have
one of the best
whisky selections in
the City; we carry
over 135 different
types of whisky.
Also, we are a
service style bar,
and strive to have
the best customer
service we possibly
can.
Q: What is your
favorite kind of wine
to drink?
JD: I love a hardy Cabernet
Sauvignon!
Q: How long have you been part of
the Northalsted Business Alliance?
JD: I have been part of The Alliance
for all 13 years. I think
neighborhood organizations are
always great to be a part of. I sat on
the Board for a number of years as
well, and I think they do great
things for the neighborhood.

Q: What would you
like to see in the future
for Boystown?
JD: Physically, I would
like to keep seeing the
beautification of our
neighborhood. I would
love to see hanging
planters along the
entire street, to create
beautiful and
welcoming spaces to
our customers. I think
we are in a good place
right now, but there is
always room for
improvement. As a
community, I would
like us to continue working with
other communities throughout
Chicago to create strong
partnerships to promote change.
Q: What does Pride mean to you?
JD: I think being proud is just being
who you are, it comes from the
inside. To me, it means being a
respectful citizen, taking care of
others, and helping out your
community. There is a great sense
of pride that can be accomplished
by working together with everyone
toward common goal.
Q: What is something people would
never guess about you?
JD: A lot of things! Before The
Twisted Vine, I had many different
careers. I was a licensed barber for
a while, and I was also a flight
attendant.

Breaking News!!
Caitlyn Has Been Found!!

This Just In!! (Actually, one year
from now …) Caitlyn Jenner has
been found! The most notorious
kidnapping case in California
history (since Patty Hearst) has
come to an end! Earlier today, I
made contact with Caitlyn, and in a
moment, I will tell you the story of
her yearlong ordeal.
But first, you remember how it
all started. One year ago, Caitlyn
and her “posse” of transgender
women friends started off filming
Season 3 of “I Am Cait” by getting
into a luxury bus and driving away.
Then a few hours later, the bus was
found by the side of the road, all
the members of the posse
seemingly drugged into
unconsciousness, and Caitlyn was
missing! After that, authorities
conducted an intensive search of
every country club, spa, high-end
nail salon and Gucci store in
southern California without success
– Caitlyn could not be found.
Then, a few days ago, acting on
a hunch, I confronted Jenny Boylan
and – after threatening to read to
her from Donald Trump’s “Art of the
Deal” – she broke down and spilled
her guts. Here’s what she told me:
“The trip started out okay, but it
didn’t take long for Caitlyn to start
in with her privileged, entitled
whining about how ordinary
transgender women just don’t
understand how Republicans are
actually their friends. So, right
away, we started arguing and
Caitlyn said, ‘Don’t go there!’ one
too many times. Well, all of us just
lost it. We turned the bus around
and headed for south LA. After
arriving, we picked a random street
corner – there was a “Donut Time”
shop there – and kicked her off the
bus. And you know, all of us
immediately felt better.”
As a reporter, I had to follow up
this lead, so I drove to south LA
and parked next to Donut Time. I

went in, ordered coffee and a
donut with pink icing and
sprinkles, and looked around.
The only person there was a
young, black transgender
woman, apparently waiting for
someone. So I nervously went
up to her and asked if I could
sit down and ask her some
questions.
In response, she helpfully
pointed out that I was a “skanky
bitch with no more fashion sense
than a mother fuckin’ fish.” (All true
enough, I must admit.) Wishing to
get on her good side, I offered to
buy her some donuts, which I did.
Here is what she told me (her name,
by the way, was Sin-Dee):
“So yeah, I know that honky
bitch, lazy piece of crap. When she
got here, she couldn’t even do her
own hair or nails or any of that shit!
She was useless! So my friend
Alexandra, she been lettin’ her
sleep in her room, but she had to
get a job, which was the usual sort
of shit job us girls have to get,
’cause no one will give us any kind
of decent job.”
“So this skank started out
washing dishes and waiting tables
at Burrito Heaven over on
Sepulveda ’cause she can’t stay
with Alexandra unless she pays
some rent, and when she shops for
clothes, that clueless honky always
pays retail.”
So there I was listening to SinDee when the door to Donut Time
opened and a young guy – real chill
with lots of tattoos and a hoodie –
came in. And with him was another
young, black transgender
prostitute. Turns out his name was
Chester, and with him was SinDee’s friend Alexandra. So I bought
donuts and coffee all round.
Chester told me that after a few
weeks of observing – from a
distance – that extremely tall
transgender woman I described,

and seeing how his customers
looked at her, he decided to add
her to his stable of girls, which he
did.
He told me, “She would not
shut up with her endless, annoying
drama about how she didn’t know
‘whether she was into guys or not,’
so I borrowed a car and took her for
a ride through the car wash a
couple of times.”
“So finally,” he went on, “the
realization hit her what it is that men
want more than anything. She’s
such an airhead, I had to pound it
into her head. (And ‘pounding’ is
sort of my business.) After that, I
started finding dates for her, and
she learned what a girl has to do to
survive on the streets.”
“She stopped expecting other
people to do everything for her, and
she started doing things for herself.
So now, we call her “Snow White”
’cause girls don’t come any ‘whiter’
than her, and one day I saw her out
front of Donut Time surrounded by
several of her admirers from Mexico
and Guatemala, and she just
reminded me of her.”
Just then, we noticed a large,
black, tricked-out Escalade pull up
in front, and the passenger door

Living Trusts –
Protect Your
Planning

More and more, LGBT couples
are using revocable living trusts as
a way to efficiently pass on their
assets to their partners and
spouses and to insure that they will
handle their personal affairs if they
ever become incapacitated.
A revocable living trust is a
legal arrangement where a person
executes a written trust document
naming themselves as the trustee
of their own trust and, while alive,
they transfer their property to their
trust so that the trust holds legal
title to all their assets.
The document creating the
trust allows the person making the
trust (maker) to at any time dissolve
the trust, change the trust or take
assets from the trust, always
retaining complete control of their
property. The trust document can
provide for the appointment of a
successor trustee (surviving LGBT
lover/spouse) who would only act
upon the death or disability of the
maker of the trust.
A living trust offers the
following advantages:
• Keeping control. While the
maker is alive, he or she has the

right to the income generated by
the trust and use of the trust
property such as the house and
furniture. Upon his or her death,
the assets of the trust could be
distributed to a surviving spouse,
lover, family, charities or remain in
the trust for the lifetime of the
surviving lover and then pass
upon his or her death.
• Providing for disability.
Should the maker of the trust
become physically or mentally
incompetent, the living trust can
serve as the framework for the
management of the maker’s
assets and property.
• Reducing delay and cost.
The living trust can act like a will
and dispose of the maker’s
property upon death. The property
of the trust is not subject to
probate proceedings, thus avoiding
court supervision, public
examination of the property
distribution and will challenges by
family members.
• Preserving privacy. Trusts can
also serve individuals who don’t
want an inheritance to be made
public. It avoids problems of friends
and family from going into the
Probate Clerk’s office to look at the
files on their estate and see who
got what.
• Avoiding ancillary probate.
Someone who owned a vacation
house in Lakeside, Michigan and a
condominium in
Chicago could not
have probate in both
those states unless
they used a living
trust.
• Avoidance of family
disputes. There is
less chance of a
lawsuit by family
members to contest a
living trust than there
would be with a will.
Probate proceedings
for a will require
notice to family
members, along with
the publicity which
may encourage such
suits.
• Funding the living
trust. Many times people will create
a living trust but then put nothing in
it. The advantage of funding your
trust is the avoidance of probate in
the event of death or disability and
the accompanying probate
administration complexities and
costs. A partially funded trust will
not avoid the necessity of probate
because assets not in the trust still
need to be probated.
The transfer of property to the
trust is like a sale or gift of the
asset to another individual. When
conveying real property from the
settlor to the trustee, or transferring
saving accounts from the settlor to
the trustee, the transfer is
accomplished just as if the property
or account were being transferred
to a purchaser. With a trust, the
purpose is to transfer property
owned by the settlor so that it is
legally owned by the trust. Ideally,
there should be no property owned
outright in the name of the settlor.
Only property owned outright by an
individual (and that does not have a
beneficiary designation) is subject
to probate administration.

The John Alexander Hoosier 250
Tricycle Race is celebrating 21
years of fun and frivolity for a good
cause. The event has grown from
barely able to fill a downtown
parking lot to one that closed down
a portion of Mass Avenue for a day.
Though held in mid-May, the
Hoosier 250 Tricycle Race is
considered by many to be the true
kick-off event to Circle City IN Pride
Week.
This year's race, held on
Sunday, May 22, 2016, will take
place at a new location — on Park
Avenue next to the Metro Nightclub
& Restaurant. Returning this year
will be live musical and comedic
performances. This year's
entertainment will have a continued
focus on local talent pulled from
Indy's LGBT community.
Performers will be announced at a
later date.
Team registration starts at
12pm and the races will begin
promptly at 1pm. Teams consist of
two individuals and each team
member must be at least 18 years
of age to participate. Registration
made on the day of the event, May
22, will be $40 per team; however,
early online registration can be
made for $30.
As is tradition, the newly
crowned Mr and Ms Circle City IN
Pride will be on-site to wave the
checkered flag for each race. The
pageant formerly known as Miss
Hoosier 250 is now in its third year
of fierce competition. With the
theme, What Color Is Your Pride?,
this year's pageant will be held on
April 10th at Gregs Indy, 231 E 16th
St.

North Carolinians, released a letter
from more than 80 leading CEOs
and business leaders calling on
Governor Pat McCrory and the
North Carolina General Assembly
to repeal the radical provisions in
the deeply discriminatory House Bill
2 that was rammed through the
legislature last week.
The letter -- signed by dozens
of CEOs from across the nation -comes only a day after Georgia
Governor Nathan Deal announced
he would veto anti-LGBT legislation
in Georgia after facing a sustained
outcry from a broad chorus of
advocates and companies. On
Thursday morning, HRC President
Chad Griffin and Equality NC
Executive Director Chris Sgro will
deliver the letter personally to
Governor McCrory's office. Griffin
and Sgro have also requested a
meeting with the governor on
Thursday in order to discuss the
very real impact this new law will
have on LGBT North Carolinians.
"Discrimination is bad for North
Carolina, bad for America, and bad
for business," said HRC President
Chad Griffin. "These business
leaders are speaking out because
they know this attack on lesbian,
gay, bisexual and especially
transgender North Carolinians isn't
just morally wrong -- it also puts
their employees, customers and
North Carolina's economy at risk.
For the sake of all North
Carolinians, Governor McCrory and
the General Assembly must act
now to repeal this heinous attack
on fairness and equality."

Spidle), a resistance fighter who
lost his family, makes it his
mission to protect the survivors at
all costs. But he discovers
determining right from wrong is
more complicated in the new
world.

David Boyer began serving drinks

restaurant on Clark at Diversey. 40
years later he is still working the

Touché. Over the years David has
slung drinks at numerous bars
from Old Town to Roger Park and
hosted country dances at many
others.
Friday April 15th, Touché will
celebrate David’s 40 years “behind
bars” in Chicago by taking us back
to the year 1976 and give you a
taste of the world David discovered
when he made Chicago his home.
The Bistro, Cheeks, The Gold
Coast, The Snake Pit are just a
few of the legendary bars of 1976
that David stumbled onto that first
year (and out of on more than one
occasion) The bar will be decked
out with tributes to these and many
other gay haunts of the time.

fun, frisky and all around fabulous
benefit. It will feature a live auction
of spectacular prizes presented by

A committee comprised of
chorus members and supporters
