Invasive species are plants or animals living outside their known natural range. They’ve been introduced accidentally or intentionally by human activities. They harm the environment, economy or society. How are they dangerous? Invasive species may feed on native species or compete for food. They introduce new parasites to native species. They are one of the leading causes of threatened or endangered species. Invasive species are most commonly spread by hitching a ride on a boat, trailer, fishing gear or equipment, including bait buckets. Become a REEL Expert Round goby Zebra mussel Do your part • Do not release live bait. Empty your bait on land. Freeze or salt bait to use later. • Drain water from your boat, including the motor, livewell and bilge. • Remove all visible plants and organisms from your boat and gear.
