Welcome to the conservation areas of Credit Valley
Conservation (CVC). We invite you to think of these areas
as your own. Please respect and enjoy these special
places as much as we do, while you relive fond memories
or make new ones. We encourage you to experience the
Credit River watershed, from the shores of Lake Ontario
to the headwaters at Island Lake in Orangeville. Whether
you like to fly fish for brown trout or paddle a canoe, one
of our 10 conservation areas has an opportunity for you.
Brian Kristy
Enforcement Specialist
While this guide will provide general information about
our parks, we invite you to explore and find your own
special place. When you discover how much you really
love these conservation areas (and we know you will),
consider becoming a member to enjoy savings all year.

Belfountain Conservation Area is
situated on the Niagara Escarpment in
the valley of the West Credit River. The
spring-fed waters of this river sustain
coldwater fish, such as brook and
brown trout, offering ample angling
opportunities. Walk along cliffs of
the Niagara Escarpment and watch
freshwater springs flowing down
limestone cliffs.
The park features include the waterfall,
‘belle’ fountain, suspension bridge
and Yellowstone Cave, complete with
cement stalactites. These structures
were built by Charles W. Mack, inventor
of the cushion rubber stamp, in 1908.

Save our Water
FROM INVASIVES
Invasive species are increasingly threatening our local
waters and can greatly impact our fisheries.
What are they?
Invasive species are plants or animals
living outside their known natural range.
They’ve been introduced accidentally or
intentionally by human activities. They harm
the environment, economy or society.
How are they dangerous?
Invasive species may feed on native species or
compete for food. They introduce new parasites
to native species. They are one of the leading
causes of threatened or endangered species.
Invasive species are most commonly spread
by hitching a ride on a boat, trailer, fishing
gear or equipment, including bait buckets.

your boat and gear. Put them into a garbage.
• Remove all invisible organisms
from your boat and gear by:
• rinsing with hot water
• spraying with high pressure water
• drying in the sun for five days

To protect against disease transfer and
invasive species introduction, baitfish use
in conservation areas is now limited to
Island Lake Conservation Area. Anglers
wishing to use baitfish must purchase
them at Island Lake.
Worms, where Ontario Fishing
Regulations allow, will continue to be
allowed as bait at Ken Whillans Resource
Management Area and Terra Cotta
Conservation Area. CVC does not allow
harvesting of baitfish, frogs, leeches or
crayfish in our conservation areas.
These changes are to protect our valued
fisheries resources.

The ECT is three metres wide with a stone-screened
surface suitable for walking with strollers, wheelchairs or

Once an abandoned CP rail corridor, the Elora Cataract
Trailway (ECT) was formed through co-operation of
Credit Valley Conservation, Grand River Conservation
Authority and the Elora Cataract Trailway Association.
The trail creates a greenway for people to explore the
environment in different ways, while protecting natural
and cultural heritage values.

Experience the natural wonders of the
Niagara Escarpment and the cultural
heritage of its past at Limehouse
Conservation Area. The Bruce Trail and
side trails take visitors into the geological
heart of the area known as the “Hole in
the Wall” where ladders provide access
to fissures in the escarpment rock.
Trails also take visitors past remnants
of the lime industry in Ontario. Stand
before huge lime kilns and associated
features such as an old powderhouse.
These cultural heritage resources of the
1800s represent an important part of
Ontario’s past.
