What is The Football Academy?
The Football Academy is a two-year, full-time education and football development programme delivered in partnership with both professional and non-league
football clubs. Open to talented footballers aged between 16–18 years, the Academy Programme is a must for any keen footballer. A trial will be required as
places will be offered based on playing ability.
Why Join the WHUCST Academy?
West Ham United Football Club have a proven track record in nurturing and producing talented players through our outstanding Football Academy set up. We
have produced players such as Joe Cole, Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick, Jermain Defoe, Rio Ferdinand, Mark Noble, James Tompkins and Jack Collison in recent
years. Today there are over 100 players in the Premiership and Football League who are products of the West Ham Academy.
The WHUCST coaching has been developed using the West Ham Academy philosophy of learning to play the ‘West Ham Way’.
The club were awarded Grade 1 status for their Academy in the Premier League’s newly introduced EPPP programme promising young players the very best
standards of coaching. Every session aims to enhance and develop a player’s technical and tactical knowledge through an extensive football programme delivered
by highly experienced UEFA A and B Licensed coaches.
Who is the Academy Manager?
The two Academy managers are Bryan Glover and Simon Copley. Bryan Glover has vast experience of the professional game and is currently completing his UEFA
A license coaching badge. Bryan has represented teams such as West Ham United FC, Crystal Palace FC, Leyton Orient FC and Crawley Town FC. Since Bryan retired
from the professional game he has gone on to build a full time coaching career at West Ham United and manages the club’s Under 9’s. Still a keen footballer
himself, Bryan enjoys playing for a local non-league team in his spare time.
Simon Copley has an outstanding coaching CV and is currently managing the West Ham Academy Under 14’s. Simon is an A Licence qualified coach and will be
working closely with the players and helping them progress onto play at the highest possible level.
Academy Football
All academy players will receive daily training involving individual and team coaching from highly qualified FA coaches affiliated to the football club. Players will receive
guidance on their football fitness, nutritional advice and a regular appraisal to monitor each player’s development both on and off the pitch. Players will have the
opportunity to represent the football club through the Academy, youth, college, or reserve team, with the ultimate goal of progressing to the first team.
Where will the Academy be held?
The Football Academy offers a unique opportunity for players to train and study in an environment that will develop their academic and sporting performance. The
football development programme and academic studies will be based at West Ham’s Community Training Ground, 60a Albatross Close, Beckton, London E6 5NX. Here
players will benefit from an excellent range of training facilities and a dedicated classroom for academic studies.
What Education Programme will I study?
Over the two-year duration of the course, players will study a variety of nationally recognised qualifications across sport, coaching and fitness. Players will
study the Diploma in Sport, delivered at Level 2 and 3 standards (A-Level equivalent), FA Coaching Qualifications together with core skills in Maths and English.
Successful completion of the educational programme will enable players to follow pathways into Higher Education at selected universities or discover employment
opportunities within the sport and leisure industry. Youngsters will also be encouraged to consider coaching placements and playing scholarships in the USA.
Who will deliver the Education?
The club have developed a partnership with SCL, a further education and work based training provider, who will be responsible for the management and delivery
of the educational element of the Academy programme. SCL currently work in with sixth form schools, further education colleges and football academies in the
South of England and have over 10-years of experience successfully delivering vocational and academic sports based qualifications. The SCL team consist of highly
qualified and experienced teachers, assessors, verifiers and FA coach educators.
What are the Costs?
Both the football and educational element of the Academy are fully funded and therefore there is no cost to join the programme but there will be subsidised costs
for purchasing training kit at the start of the season. Further details will be provided upon the player’s acceptance into the Football Academy.
