A-Z Of Boilie Fishing October 06.qxd 10/9/06 11:54 Page 1 OF BOILIE FISHING! EVERY LETTER OF THE ALPHABET CUNNINGLY REPRESENTED BY AN ITEM OR TACTIC. CLEVER, EH? BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, IT’S BOILIE TIME – SO HERE’S HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THIS AUTUMN! OCTOBER 2006 49 A-Z Of Boilie Fishing October 06.qxd 10/9/06 11:54 Page 2 AUTUMN FEEDING A: Description: “It’s a delightful time of the year. The leaves are turning brown, the conkers are falling and hatching and there’s that fresh bite in the air,” confirms one weather nerd. To us it means just one thing: it’s boilie time! Cost: Nowt! Contact: For weather forecasts, head to: www.bbc.co.uk/weather F:FISHMEALS Description: Stand by to have the old school concept of ‘no oils in the winter’ shattered. Fishmeals these days are now prepared and sold for all year round usage so get on them and stay on them. Cost: Around a tenner a kilo. Contact: Your local tackle shop. FLOSS D:DENTAL B:BARRELS Description: At a time of year when the fish are just hungry, any shape will do, but look at some of the facts. Boilies: used through the year, come in three regular sizes (10, 15 and 18mm), and usually fished as ‘50 baits around each rod’. Result: The carp can get wary, so use barrels. Cost: £11.99(ish). Contact: www.tacklebox.co.uk Description: “If you’re gonna be using popups, then tie them on,” one of our ‘big fish experts’ told us. Boilies just go hand-in-hand with the likes of the Chod Rig and Tel’s Stiff Hinged Rig – both of which you need to tie the baits on with. Cost: £2.99. Contact: ESP on: 01865 748989. CARP LOVE ’EM! G:GREEDY Description: Simple maths here: how do you get a really fat kid? Feed them loads. So person plus plenty of Big Mac burgers equals a wobbler of a person. It’s the same with carp – they only get mahoosive by eating – and by eating boilies – so give ’em boilies! Cost: Mass buy your bait. Contact: The Bait & Feed Company on: 01920 438338. Description: Boilie connoisseur, Terry Hearn knows exactly the advantages of boilies and describes those ‘plus points’ in his first, award-wining book. He even shows and talks how the famous ‘Hinged Stiff Rig’ works. Purr-chase now. NB: His new book is out soon – yay! Cost: £21.95. Contact: Bunter Hunter Publications Ltd on: 01252 373658. C:CATAPULT Description: For up to 40 (or if you’ve got a real industrial jobby and strong arms), maybe 50yds you can bait up with ease. One of the real beauts of boilie fishing is being able to bait up without any hassle. Bombs away! Cost: From a tenner up to a score (£20). Contact: Fox International on: 0208 501 0921. 50 OCTOBER 2006 EASY FISHING E: Description: Your hookbait should match the size of your hook, which makes fishing ‘bits’, such as corn, trimmed down boiled food and half a growler (tiger nut), sooo much harder. With boilies you can get away with bigger hooks, bait up easier and, fingers crossed, catch some of the bigger residents… Cost: Nothing more than you’d pay already! Contact: CEMEX Angling for big fish waters: 01932 583 630. POP-UPS H:HOOKERS Description: If you’re looking for performance pop-ups that look dead right and weigh as much as a Malteser, Surrey-based pop-up techs are what you want. “They’re all rolled with corkballs – and have a nice, hard outer-coating,” says Lee Laggan. As used by Hearn, Sharp and Read. Cost: £8.99 a tub. Contact: Hookers on: 07890 796506. LOOK AT THE BIG FISH J:JUST ANGLER’S RESULTS! Description: Gaze through any issue of CARPology and you’ll see that most of our resident ‘big fish anglers’ have something in common – boilies! Regan, Taylor, McAllister, Davey, Slowen. KORDA BOILIE FUNNEL WEB K: Description: Based in Essex and famous for their Underwater DVD’s and PVA funnel web systems, the Korda clever clogs reformatted the original design and came up with this. Used nowadays mostly for the ‘Dynamite Stick’, but not used so much for it’s real purpose – boilies. Place three in the tube and then attach one to the Hair. It works a treat. Cost: £10.99. Contact: Korda on: 01708 749775. AND EASY Q:QUICK Description: Guaranteed to make your fishing a lot easier. You can bait up quicker, re-bait quicker and catch more quicker. “This is dead easy fishing. Wang a load of boilies out and that’s it. Beats all that spodding malarkey,” Angus announced during our stay in France. Cost: Nowt! Contact: There isn’t one! ’EM UP! O:OIL LICK AND STICK! L: Description: Round boilies and barrels for fine heavy-hungrywaters and canals, but if you fish a pressured pond, then you need this: Crack a boilie in half, lick both sides and then place back together. Catapult out and on impact the two halves will split. Repeat numerous times and you’ll be left with a bed of half baits on the deck. Ace! Cost: Nowt! Contact: Issue 8 of CARPology for more in-depth details. MIXED SIZES M: Description: Don’t confuse yourself, but the carp. Get a selection of different sized baits – 10, 12, 15, 18, 20, 22, 24 (you pick which ones) and fire them in. It means the carp will have to suck at different levels and best of all, it means you can use a bigger bait and hook. Outcome: better hook holds. Cost: A couple of extra kilos, so around £20. Contact: Whatever bait firm you use. Description: The last word on extra attraction. There’s two ways of doing this. “Just before you’re about to freeze your bait, pour in some liquid, reseal the bag and place back in the freezer. The bait will now take on the liquid better,” Mr. Knight at Mainline Baits told us. Otherwise, give ’em a good dose before you leave to go angling. Cost: Around a fiver. Contact: Your tackle shop! R:ROCKET! Description: When we say ‘Rocket’ we actually mean ‘Boilie Rocket’. Thanks to Wychwood we can now deliver boiled food up to 120yrds out into the pond. “Durable body with flexi fins, super float foam nose and brilliant aerodynamic design are the key elements,” Mr. Garner told us. The editors favourite too. Cost: £6.99. Contact: Wychwood on: 01527 587 428. *Picture courtesy of Richworth Baits. www.richworth.com SHARP BOILIES N:NIGEL Description: Whether it’s the mix of milk proteins, birdfoods and fishmeals, or that ‘one key liquid attractor’ we’re unsure, but whatever it is, this bait works bloody damn well. It even caught The Burghfield Common for Li’l Nige – which hadn’t been out for over four years… Cost: £10.99 a kilo. Contact: Bait-Tech on: 01473 241811. POUCH P: Description: It may sound silly, but B-Geeesus does this make the whole ‘baiting up’ process a helluva lot easier. We recommend ESP’s Boilie Pouch, which even comes with a catty pult holder. Cost: £7.50. Contact: ESP on: 01865 748989. S:STRINGERS Description: A three-bait stringer is ideal, or if you wanna go old school Paisley stylee, then make up two or three bait stringers. Because the fish will be ‘grazing’, the hookbait/stringer partnership goes hand-in-hand. Now cue: ‘W’. Cost: Korda Kwik-Melt Tape, £3.99. Contact: Korda on: 01708 749775. OCTOBER 2006 51 A-Z Of Boilie Fishing October 06.qxd 10/9/06 11:55 Page 4 A-Z Of Boilie Fishing! THROWING STICK T: Description: The most advanced throwing stick ever, has a ultra-lightweight body to create minimum air resistance, and phenomenal velocity and spin speed achieved with flexing carbon arms. It’s easy to load and takes single or multiple baits from 20-26mm without the sleeve and 12-20mm with the sleeve. Solar’s greatest creation yet. Cost: £44.99. Contact: Solar Tackle on: 01689 826632. APPROACH U:UNDERRATED Description: What do you use? Hemp, pellets, corn, a few boilies… Forget all about that and use just boilies. Like we keep harping on about – and Li’l Nige does too – a bed of bog standard boilies just doesn’t seem to get used much nowadays, so get on them. Cost: Nowt! Contact: Haven’t got one! BOILIE X:XPANDA BUCKET Description: Fresh is always best, so keep them fresh is what we say. Nashy’s Xpanda Boilie Bucket is a reliable and fresh way to carry boiled food. It’s clever too: as like the name suggests, it can be expanded and compressed as to how much bait you want to carry. Cost: £17.99. Contact: Nash Tackle on: 01702 233232. DON’T NEED LOADSA Y:YOU OTHER CACK! V:VERSATILE Description: However… if the thought of just putting out 100 or so boilies isn’t quite cricket to you, crush some, blend some, and halve some and add them to your spod mix. In six words, ‘the boilie is a versatile product’. Cost: Nowt! Contact: Ditto! BAITING W:WIDE Description: Another real Brucy Bonus with boilies is that you don’t need to bait up real tight – in fact, we vote you really spread the bait about. The key to boilie fishing is to get the fish grazing – picking up one boilie and then moving on to the next one. Get the ’pult or stick and cover the swim! Cost: Nowt! Contact: CARPology back issues 14 and 15 at: www.carpology.net. 52 OCTOBER 2006 Description: Because you’re just using boilies, you don’t need to carry loadsa other cack – dare we say it, but pellets, hemp and a range of multi-coloured pop-ups. “Go for the simple, clean approach and you’ll nail ’em,” was Rob Bell’s closing comment. Cost: You’ll save money! Contact: You don’t need one – just do it! *Picture courtesy of Dynamite Baits. www.dynamite-baits.com OF CARP FALL Z:ZILLIONS TO ’EM! Description: Look through the weeklies, look through the monthlies, look on the web and you’ll discover zillions – maybe gazillions of carp have fallen to them. Whatta you waiting for? Tackle shop – boilies – pond – NOW! Cost: Nowt! Contact: Ditto, ditto, ditto!
