Waukesha Choral Union is pleased to present Handel’s “Messiah” as a
free concert featuring community singers, a full orchestra and wonderful
soloists. This concert is sponsored by the Fred and JoAnn Portz
Foundation, representing a special couple that believed that live music
enriches us all.
“Messiah” is one of the best known and most frequently performed
choral works in western music today. Mention Handel’s Messiah and
everyone thinks of the rousing Hallelujah chorus that brings everyone
to their feet! Handel wrote the Messiah Oratorio in 24 days of feverish
concentration. Part one is a prophesy of the birth of Jesus Christ, the
second exalts his sacrifice for humankind and the final section his
Resurrection.
We hope you enjoy Handel’s “Messiah.” We also invite you to continue
connecting with Waukesha Choral Union. Our next and final concert
of this season, “Classics and Folk Songs,” will be presented at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, May 7 at Humphrey Chapel/Art Center on the Carroll University
campus.

regular singing member or as a member of the community singers who
will be part of our spring, 2017 concert.

A B O U T WAU K E S H A C H O R A L U N I O N
Waukesha Choral Union has been musically active in the community
for over 60 years. WCU was featured in WISN-TV’s Season to Celebrate
broadcast during Christmas of 2011. Originally a combination of Carroll
College students and community singers, WCU took its present form
as an auditioned choir in 1978. Recent collaborative partners include
the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Bel Canto Chorus, Milwaukee
Choristers, Carroll University Choirs, and the choirs of Waukesha South
High School, Muskego High School, and Hartford Union High School.
MISSION
The Waukesha Choral Union will challenge, enrich, and engage its singing
members, audiences, and community through the pursuit of excellence
and a variety of programming. The WCU mission includes expansion of the
effectiveness of its educational efforts throughout Waukesha County through
collaboration.

A B O U T T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R
Michael Chapel, Artistic Director of the Waukesha Choral Union, is a
graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a Bachelor of
Fine Arts in Music and a Master’s Degree in Music Education – with
an emphasis on choral conducting. He is the director of choral
activities and musical theatre at Brown Deer Middle/High School;
he is also the fine arts coordinator for the School District of Brown
Deer. Additionally, Mr. Chapel is the choir director and lead service
accompanist at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Saukville, WI.
Michael has served as an adjudicator for the past 15 years at concert and solo-ensemble
festivals sponsored by the Wisconsin School Music Association. He is currently the Choir
Coordinator for the WSMA Middle-Level State Honors Project, and is also active as a
clinician for middle and high school choral groups.

Welcome to the Waukesha Choral Union’s presentation of Handel’s Messiah. We are
pleased to continue our tradition of bringing this free performance to our community, a
tradition that dates back more than 30 years.
Messiah premiered in Dublin, Ireland in April of 1742, where it was enthusiastically
received. It remains as Handel’s best known work; however, that was not the case until
the last few years of his life, when it became a part of his charitable concert series – with
proceeds benefiting an organization for underprivileged children.
At that time in his life, Handel had suffered several bouts of serious illness (speculation
is either strokes, or lead poisoning to his central nervous system – or both). Yet, he
was composing large scale works at a prolific pace. Messiah was composed in August
and September of 1741 - in only 24 days. And after writing out the “Hallelujah” chorus,
Handel is reported to have exclaimed to his servant with tears in his eyes:
“I did think I did see all Heaven before me, and the great God Himself seated on His
throne, with his Company of Angels.”

AMANDA COOPER, M.D.
MEDICAL & COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY
Dr. Amanda Cooper earned her medical degree from the Medical
College of Wisconsin and completed a transitional year residency
at Aurora St. Luke’s in Milwaukee. Dr. Cooper completed her
Dermatology residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She
provides medical and surgical skin care, and specializes in cosmetic
procedures including Botox® injections. Dr. Cooper is Board Certified

Dr. Valerie Lyon is nationally recognized for her expertise in surgical
procedures of the skin. She treats children from infancy through their
teenage years. Dr. Lyon earned her degree in medicine from the

Shallece Peters
Stewart, soprano
holds a Bachelor of Fine
Arts Degree from UWMilwaukee’s Peck School
of the Arts and will be
starting her Master of Music degree in fall 2016.
She is the recent 1st place winner at the Wisconsin District NATS Competition in the Advanced Women’s Division and previously a
finalist, receiving 3rd place in the Senior
Women’s Division. She has the honor of
studying under the tutelage of Dr. Tanya
Kruse Ruck.
Currently active in oratorio, art song, and
opera, Shallece has most recently played
the Queen of the Night in UWM Opera’s Die
Zauberflöte, La Contessa (Le nozze di Figaro)
in UWM opera scenes, La Bergère (L’enfant et
les sortileges) with UWM Opera & Milwaukee
Opera Theatre, Amina (La Sonnambula) with
Kalliope Vocal Arts, Violetta (La Traviata) with
Kalliope Vocal Arts, and Dew Fairy (Hansel
and Gretel) with UWM Opera.
In January 2016 Shallece joined OperaWorks in Los Angeles, CA to participate in a
two week intensive training program, where
she performed in Arias in Motion. In summer
2015 she performed with the Rolling Stones,
as a backup singer, in their “Zip Code” North
American Tour. She also studied abroad in
summer 2014 at Academia Vocale Lorenzo
Malfatti in Lucca, Italy where they performed
multiple concerts throughout Italy.
In addition to performing, Shallece has
been a member of the voice and piano faculty at the Academy of Performing Arts for
over 3 years, where she continues to teaching private voice and piano lessons. She is
also the music director at the United Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Waukesha,
WI since Spring 2015.
Jillian Hansen Bruss,
mezzo-soprano. Jill has
sung throughout the
greater Milwaukee area,
Midwest and Texas including solo performances
with Dallas Opera, Florentine Opera, Milwaukee

Choral Artists, Bel Canto and Milwaukee Opera Theatre. She has toured both Denmark
and Norway with Paula Foley Tillen performing their recorded concert, Voyage. Jill performs with colleagues at both Festa Italiana
and the summer opera nights at the Italian
Community Center. She holds a Bachelors in
Music Education from UW-Stevens Point and
a Masters in Vocal Performance from the
University of Illinois. Jill has a voice studio in
Elm Grove and has taught at Pius XI High
School and UW-Parkside. Currently, she is
the Development Manager for the Florentine
Opera. Previously, Jill was the General Manager of the Milwaukee Opera Theatre from
2005 – 2011. She has conducted the women’s ensemble, Women of Note.
Alex Gmeinder,
tenor has been praised by
the Madison Isthmus for
his “…powerful tenor
voice…” in UW-Madison’s
production of Don
Giovanni.
In 2014 he joined Sarasota Opera as an Apprentice Artist performing in numerous outreach and donor events
as well as the chorus in the main stage
operas.
Mr. Gmeinder holds a Masters degree in
Opera Performance from the School of Music
at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
While at Madison he performed the roles of
Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Giasone in Cherubini’s Medea, and the title role
of Fritz Kobus in Mascagni’s L’amico Fritz.
In the summer of 2013 Mr. Gmeinder
spent five weeks in Novafeltria, Italy at La
Musica Lirica where he studied with Rossini
Festival coaches from Pesaro, Italy. While
in Italy he performed the roles of Arturo in
Donzetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Edoardo
Milfort in Rossini’s La Cambiale di Matrimonio.
Other opera roles include King Ouf the 1st
in Chabrier’s L’Etoile, the title role in Bernstein’s Candide, Eisenstein in Strauss’ Die
Fledermaus, Vašek in Smetana’s The Bartered
Bride, and Reverend Parris in Ward’s The
Crucible.

Gmeinder has performed Bach’s Magnificat, Mendelssohn’s Magnificat, Schubert’s
Mass in E flat Major, Mozart’s Requiem, and
Mozart’s Regina Coeli with the Janesville
Choral Union. With Southern Lakes Masterpiece Chorale he has performaned Handel’s
Messiah, Haydn’s Mass in Time of War, and
will soon be performing Puccini’s Messa di
Gloria and Ralph Vaughan Williams Serenade
to Music. Most recently Mr. Gmeinder was a
soloist with the Wisconsin Chamber Choir
where he sang Mozart’s Requiem.
He has the privilege of studying under
the tutelage of Julia Faulkner from the Ryan
Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
This spring he will be performing various
gigs in the Chicago area as well as Wisconsin.
Thomas J. Weis,

Showing his vocal versatility, Dr. Thomas J. Weis
has appeared as leading
man in Kiss Me Kate and
The Music Man with The
Heartland Festival in Platteville, Wisconsin, Grandpa Moss in Skylight
Opera Theater’s production of The Tender
Land, which aired on Wisconsin PBS in January 2003, and as Bass Soloist in Handel’s
Messiah with the Milwaukee Symphony. Mr.
Weis has also sung as Bass Soloist in Bach’s
Magnificat, Haydn’s The Creation, Verdi’s
Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Dvorak’s Stabat
Mater, Brahms’ Requiem, Baritone soloist in
Orff’s Carmina Burana, and more.
Rena Archwemety Beyer from The Capital
Times, in a classical review of Dvorak’s Stabat
Mater wrote, “Weis gave a moving bass solo
in ‘Fac ut ardeat cor meum’. From his strong
entrance with the brass section to the emotion
he conveyed, his interpretation of the text was
outstanding”.
Mr. Weis embodied the title role of Figaro
in the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Opera program’s Le Nozze di Figaro of W.A.
Mozart. In the Opera Review for the Wisconsin State Journal, Jay Rath stated “As
Figaro, Thomas Weis has a voice that is warm
and mellow but with an edge like good black
coffee”.
Thomas has been an active voice teacher
and performer at Carroll University in
Waukesha, Wisconsin for the past fifteen
years, offering recitals, master classes, and
numerous faculty collaborations. Dr. Weis is
a member of NATS (National Association of
Teachers of Singing), and has served on the
Wisconsin NATS board. Thomas is currently
teaching voice at Carroll University and the
Waukesha County Conservatory of Music in
Hartland. Dr. Weis is the director of the Carroll University Men’s Chorus, founded the fall
semester of 2014. Other spring 2016 engagements include bass soloist in Mozart’s
Requiem with the Concord, New Hampshire
Chorale.
