Annual
Report
2015
CHAIR’S REMARKS
Ian Sherlock, Board Chair
Our industry saw continued strong activity in
2015, from reaching the ten billionth device
shipment in January1 to peak involvement
in Wi-Fi Alliance® task groups. The signs are
reassuring as Wi-Fi® reaches the middle of
its second decade of market expansion,
but it is always important to spend time on
organizational improvement and this was a
significant theme for the year.
One aspect of this effort was the follow up
on the feedback from the Chicago member
meeting strategy session, which highlighted
the need to seek better processes and
methods to improve program execution
and to provide an overall architectural view
of how Wi-Fi Alliance certifications relate to
each other. Actions taken included hosting a
discussion about methods improvement in
the Certification Oversight Group and starting
a pilot program to evaluate conformance
testing as a collaboration project involving
staff and the Security Task Group to deliver
the Security Enhancements program. This
approach may be scaled up for use in other
protocol-based certification task groups, and
may help improve the viability of programs
that otherwise might struggle to achieve the
diversity of implementations needed for the
classic test bed methodology.
2015 was also a year in which it became
clear that the success of Wi-Fi in unlicensed
bands had attracted the attention of other
technologies and, specifically, LTE vendors
started a push to adapt their technology
for use in the unlicensed 5 GHz bands.
Wi-Fi Alliance stepped up on behalf of the
Wi-Fi industry to advocate for fair and
effective use of unlicensed spectrum. This
activity has resulted in work on many fronts
by members and Wi-Fi Alliance staff
supporting discussion in standards, regulatory
and legislative bodies. The culmination of
this initiative was a coexistence workshop
facilitated by Wi-Fi Alliance in November.
The activity around variants of LTE in the
unlicensed 5 GHz band is one of a rapidly
increasing number of initiatives that fall in
scope of the Wi-Fi Alliance regulatory work
stream. It makes sense for members to
pool their efforts to advocate on behalf of
Wi-Fi in front of regulators, and Wi-Fi Alliance
supported that by dedicating more staff time
to regulatory matters. Regulators can also
benefit from Wi-Fi Alliance since it provides
a conduit to communicate with the industry,
and we saw that in the form of several
compelling keynote presentations from
regulators at member meetings in 2015.
A hallmark characteristic of Wi-Fi Alliance
over the years has been a focus on the
market. This has served the organization
well as Wi-Fi has moved from a PC-focused
technology to cell phones and now more
broadly to embedded Internet of Things
(IoT) applications. In October Wi-Fi Alliance
launched the Implementer membership
tier designed to make it easier for startups
developing IoT applications to join Wi-Fi
Alliance. At the same time, the certification
fee structure was simplified, also with a
view to encouraging pervasive certification.
In closing I’d like to recognize the efforts of
Wi-Fi Alliance members and staff on these
critical initiatives in 2015, and I look forward
to seeing them bear fruit in 2016.

CEO’S REMARKS
Edgar Figueroa, President & CEO
2015 was another year of milestones for
our industry. With cumulative shipments
reaching 12 billion units and an installed
base exceeding seven billion devices1,
Wi-Fi is one of the most prolific technologies
in the world. Wi-Fi Alliance grew to a record
698 member companies, indicating both
our effectiveness as a collaboration forum
and the strong representation we have
from our rich ecosystem.
In 2015 we introduced the Implementer
Membership to welcome companies who
do not specialize in developing connectivity
technologies and who want to give their
customers the great experience they expect
from Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ devices. Along with
the new membership tier, we revamped some
of our certification fees to ensure certification
continues to be valuable and accessible to
as many industry players as possible.
context-aware services, and empowers
products to discover other devices,
applications, and information nearby.
Throughout the year we attended more than
30 industry events globally. In September
we hosted a Smart Home Summit in Beijing,
which included discussions on wireless
innovation of Smart Home products and the
central role of Wi-Fi in the Internet of Things.
We also continued our tradition of keeping
our members informed, even if they do
not attend our member meetings, through
a series of nine symposia that included
one-day events in Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei,
Guangzhou, Sao Paulo, Hsinchu, Shenzhen,
and included about 1,000 attendees from
these regions.
Our goal is to be the collaboration forum of
choice for industry development, certification
and regulatory engagement, and there were
Wi-Fi’s continued growth into new
a multitude of efforts in this area in 2015.
devices, categories, and segments is an
For example, we continued to optimize our
opportunity for us. The new Wi-Fi CERTIFIED
cooperation model through policies and
Wi-Fi Aware™ program enables more powerful procedure updates, including updates to
our bylaws, new program development and
task group guidelines, membership terms
and conditions, open source policy, and a
number of certification policies. Our 2015
satisfaction survey indicates we are doing
well — we saw the highest overall member
satisfaction, including a 6 percent increase
in the top two scoring categories. Satisfaction
for our member meetings was also high in
2015, including the highest scores we have
measured for member meetings in Asia
and Europe.
Recognizing unlicensed spectrum as one
of society’s most valuable resources, we
are working to ensure the industry can
resolve concerns related to unlicensed
LTE and Wi-Fi coexistence. We are uniquely
positioned to deliver a suitable test regimen,
and the industry, regulators and the public
are counting on us to ensure fairness to
Wi-Fi. In 2015 we established our credibility
and commitment in this area.
In 2015 the world took notice of our work
and progress as demonstrated by the record
4.8 billion media impressions in the United
States, including much reporting in tier one
technical outlets as well as mass media, such
as Bloomberg, CNN, and China Times.
Our work on coexistence, increased network
capacity, higher performance, and enhanced
capabilities will enable Wi-Fi to continue to
deliver the best possible user experience.
Thank you all for all your work and support
in 2015, and we look forward to even more
success in 2016 and beyond.

LOOK FOR THE LOGO
Wi-Fi is one of the world’s greatest technology success stories, embraced by consumers,
enterprise, and service providers. Its massive installed base of seven billion devices equates
to almost one device in use per person on Earth. Found in every laptop and tablet, and in
98 percent of smartphones, Wi-Fi continues to see widespread adoption.
Wi-Fi CERTIFIED is an internationally recognized seal of approval for products indicating that
they have met industry-agreed standards for interoperability, security, and a range of application
specific protocols. Wi-Fi Alliance offers more than 15 Wi-Fi CERTIFIED programs, covering core
Wi-Fi technologies as well as connectivity and service applications. The innovation and thought
leadership of Wi-Fi Alliance continues to drive new Wi-Fi applications and products that enrich
the lives of users around the world. We continue to explore the possibilities of other emerging
technologies, all with a relentless focus on delivering the great user experience that underpins
the success of Wi-Fi.
