Message from
Rob Devey of Towry
Towry is delighted to be sponsoring the
National Open Art Competition for the
fourth successive year, with the 2014
exhibition taking place for the first time in
the prestigious surroundings of
Somerset House.
I have recently witnessed first-hand the
quality of the art submitted among this
year’s entries, and the extremely difficult decisions the judging
panel has had to make in order to select the shortlist of around
100 works that you see in the final exhibition. This year has seen
a record 3,600 entries, which is testament to the high regard in
which the competition is held. The standard of artworks is higher
than ever, with artists vying to follow in the footsteps of Graeme
Wilcox, who won the Towry ‘Best in Show’ award last year.
Along with the exhibitors who have been shortlisted this year, all
of whom have their own area of expertise, we strive to achieve
excellence and be leaders in our profession – as a trusted and
leading wealth advice company. While art is not our business,
we share the organiser’s ambition to inspire artists, both
emerging and established, and widen the public’s
understanding of art. If you are seeking professional wealth
advice, we can create a plan to help you make the right
decisions to achieve your financial goals. Our expertise includes
advice on retirement planning, estate planning and investment
management, all tailored to meet your needs.
Our professionally qualified advisers strive to deliver high quality
financial planning advice and they are supported by an
extensive team of experts in all relevant fields. We recognise
that each client has individual requirements and we tailor our
solutions to help them achieve their financial goals – an art, not
a science!
Our thanks go to Neil Lawson Baker, Chairman of the National
Open Art Competition, for inviting us to support the event. I wish
everyone an enjoyable time at this year’s exhibition.

Message from the
Chairman
I begin by thanking our headline sponsor Towry and Chief
Executive, Rob Devey, for their valuable participation.
Exhibiting NOA 14 in the illustrious Somerset House is a major
new development for which we are most grateful to the Director
Jonathan Reekie and his team. Gavin Turk, our artist vice
president, has created a neon sculpture for the entrance of the
Embankment Gallery where we show from Sep 18th to Oct 25th
for five weeks. We will have artists in residence as well as daily
guided tours and talks. Antony Gormley will open our special
Artists’ Evening and we aim to make this the best exhibition we
have staged in our nearly two decade history.
Ronnie Wood has become a patron of NOA and we are delighted
to welcome a celebrity who is as passionate about his art as he is
his music. Kate Thorpe has continued to sharpen our image as
our designer and has been welcomed as a new trustee. One of
her ideas has launched The NOA Collection comprising works of
art from our competing artists and esteemed judges, many of
them RAs, which will be acquired and form a collection to tour the
UK taking the NOA name with it. Our comprehensive NOA Art
Library grows and works of art or artbooks gifted or willed to The
Collection and the Library are gratefully received and add to the
gravitas of NOA as an established not for profit arts charity. NOA
thrives thanks to the generous support from a wide range of
individuals, volunteers and companies who are passionate about
art. Without this input we would not be able to stage annual selling
exhibitions in prestigious venues as well as providing the year
round help and advice that we offer, nurturing artists careers
across the entire UK.
Our team, Amanda Kings, Anne Menzies, Kate Thorpe, Jane Allan
and Cloe Barrett work tirelessly, often into the wee small hours as
the competition entries draw to a close, to make all this happen.
Penny Harris with her PR and Press team at Parker Harris and our
web team at Mzuri Design provide the invaluable back up. My
thanks also to our judging panel; to Pallant House Gallery; The
Chichester Festival Theatre and the team at the Works on Paper
Fair who together help us reach up to 30,000 visitors at the
exhibitions and many more online. BBC 1 South have produced a
programme about NOA which will be televised this autumn. We
welcome all interested parties to join the NOA family to continue
helping to take this exciting venture forwards.

We believe there are three
areas that set us apart from

Financial Planning
At Towry we believe that all our
clients’ financial decisions
should be made in the context
of a lifetime financial plan,
which is structured to help you
achieve your short and longterm goals. Without this plan,
it is difficult for you to decide
what you can or cannot afford

understanding what your own
personal objectives are before
setting out what actions you
may need to take to achieve
them.
Expertise
Our wealth advisers are

Gavin Turk
Gavin has produced a neon sculpture
‘Port’for the entrance of NOA 14
at Somerset House
A direct reference to the painting ‘La Victoire’ by
Rene Magritte, ‘Port’ is a surreal gateway: a spiritual journey
through the imagination. It is a key to unlocking ideas of the
infinite as mused on by Aldous Huxley quoting Blake;
"If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything
would appear to man as it is, infinite." It simultaneously
references Duchamp’s earlier work ‘11 Rue Larrey’ the
door that is never open or shut.

step into the picture and explore.
I am a largely self-taught young artist starting out on an art
career. Falling in love with the craft of art from an early age I am

my own style and methods through practice and experiment.

Death Bed and the Temptress
fine art photograph
162 x 112 cms
Artist’s Statement
The narrative behind my work is constructed around the
destruction of the ‘aesthetic fascism’ that once dominated my
life, marriage, fidelity, family, commitment and security, in short
my divorce.
I am a photographer who shoots portraits, lifestyle and
documentary, bringing a passionate interest in narrative to as
much of my work as possible. I love colour, expressive faces
and am naturally inquisitive. My inspiration is drawn from
personal experience, combined with a limitless appetite for
looking and learning at life. I like naughty kids, music gigs,
comedy clubs, scuba diving, good coffee and can swim
really fast. I plan to travel later this year to India as a volunteer
photographer for the Vincent Ferrer Foundation.
