ELMA update July 2013
JULI 2013 update NEWSLETTER FOR TRANSMISSION AND CONTROL TECHNOLOGY Dear reader, Innovation is high on Elma’s priority list; “ innovation in motion” is our slogan, after all. Many people would even suggest that innovation is one of the few ways in which an organisation can be healthily Integrated Direct Drive Motors for winch drives manoeuvred through the ever increasingly changing balance of economic power. Nobody could deny the importance of innovation for a knowledge-based economy such as the Netherlands. Following approximately 2 years of intensive research, Elma has developed a new type of motor, in collaboration with various parties in the offshore and wind energy sectors. The area of application is mainly in highly dynamic drive lines, including “heave compensation” in offshore installations, for example. Issues About 15 years ago, the wind turbine industry began to develop integrated Direct Drive for which there was previously only generators for wind turbines. This choice was particularly based on the desire solved electrically. The motor is based a hydraulic solution can now also be on technology which has already been to overcome problems with the reduction gearbox (load gear) and to render the applied successfully for many years in system more reliable. Nowadays, the Direct Drive wind turbines are a familiar sight the direct drive generators of the wind turbines. The motors will be marketed by Radius BV, in which Elma BV at both onshore and offshore locations. participates. I wish you great innovation. The philosophy behind the development of Direct Drive generators can also be applied to other industrial drives. Thanks to the wide range of options for load gears and electric motors from stock, designers can simply meet their turnkey drive requirements. However, Direct Drive Motors of the type used in wind turbines are not available on the market. Great dynamics So what may be the added value of these Direct Drive Motors for industrial applications? Teunis van Vulpen, technical manager at Elma: “In certain applications, where we are dealing with great dynamics, such as the so-called De Fox van fabrikant TER ‘heave compensation systems’ in the offshore industry, these integrated Direct Drive Motors offer the advantage of an extremely low inertia. This is because they work without a load gear, enabling them to readily change rotational direction, or accelerate.” Integration Elma BV is one of the parties behind Radius, a company responsible for implementation of the Integrated Direct Drive Motors. This “integration” means that the motor uses the same bearing as in the application, which is comparable with the use of a wind turbine in which the stator and rotor continue on page 2 >> of the motor are integrated with Sleepring lichamen van Kraus Elma op de TOC Dick Varel General Manager ELMA STANDS FOR... Teunis van Vulpen: “We can supply the motor with a choice of bearings, designed specifically for the application in hand. An integrated direct drive system has less components, is easier to install and maintain, and gives greater reliability.” Radius Radius will be aiming at implementation of electric motors in the higher torque segment. The torque range covered, runs from 200 kNm to 5MNm. This range is a supplement to the line of Siemens motors, which ends where we begin. The difference, however, is the choice of the bearing for the purpose of integration in the general application. Fail-safe Radius is already in contact with various potential clients. Winch manufacturers seem to be truly interested in these types of drives. A system can be simply and quickly compiled, with the rotor attached to the winch drum and the stator to the winch frame. Dynamic braking of the winch takes place via controlled short-circuiting and is fail-safe, even in the event of total power failure. New developments Determining factors for the motor torque created are the motor radius and the axial length of the motor, i.e. its volume. Generally speaking, we can generate around 100kNm torque per m3 motor volume. The company, Radius, is named after the fact that the torque increases exponentially in relation to the motor radius. Dick Varel, general manager at Elma: “Our targets for 2013 are to consolidate our initial contracts, continue to design and construct the motors and to gain all relevant approval and certificates before we can launch the concept on a larger scale. All the new developments will require us to undertake a learning curve, but we are convinced that we shall be able to limit this period as far as possible, thanks to the support received from wind turbine designers, among other people.” Watch this space... De Fox made by TER The Fox, made by the TER manufacturer, is a worm gear end switch used, for example, to measure the movement of industrial machines by means of the rotation angle and/or the number of drive shaft rotations. Think in terms of the angle displacement of the hub of a wind turbine or the number of rotations of a winch drum, etc. The gear ratio varies between 1:15 and 1:800, depending on the client’s requirements. The switching point of the contacts can be very accurately set thanks to the adjusting screws and the micro switches used in the Fox are suitable for safety functions. A maximum of 4 micro switches and maximum 2 potentiometers or encoders can be integrated in the housing. The Fox is fitted to a rotating part of the 2 elma update | juli 2013 system, which transfers the movement via a worm wheel and gears to the cams and the other equipment incorporated in the Fox. The Fox can also be fitted with a flange, for direct coupling to a motor, for example. The drive shafts in the Fox are made from stainless steel, the worm wheel rotates on ball bearings and the gears are made from a self-lubricating techno-polymer. All techno-polymers used for the housing are wear resistant, and protect the equipment against water and dirt. The ambient temperature is between -40°C and +80°C and the level of protection is IP 67. A slip ring is essential in installations in which the power supply, control circuit signals or data must be transmitted from a static location to a rotating location. Kraus has a wide range of standard slip rings for many different applications. The standard slip rings can also be tailored to meet your specific requirements. Thanks to continuous innovation and technological developments, Kraus manufactures slip rings which comply with state-of-the-art technology and the client’s wishes. Due to the great flexibility of the engineering departments at both Elma and Kraus, it is possible to quickly offer an optimum solution for your application. The slip rings are used in the following installations, for example: •Mobile cranes •Excavators •Tower cranes •Sewage water purification plants •Printing presses •Robotics •Production machines •Wind turbines •Ships’ cranes •Revolving doors Technical data •Rotation speeds up to 2,300 rpm •Currents from mA levels up to 5000 A. •Voltages from mV levels up to 16kv. •Suitable for telephone connections, data transfer as well as for control circuits •Encapsulated and non-encapsulated slip rings, IP 67. •Transfer of video signal •Fibre optic slip rings •Contact free transmission systems for data •Explosion-proof slip rings according to II 2D IP65 T90 ° C and II 3D IP65 T90 ° C Elma at the TOC Following a couple of years’ absence from the TOC, a trade fair for the harbour transshipment sector, Elma was well and truly present again this year. At the show, Elma paid plenty of attention to joysticks, operator consoles, resistors, radiographic controls, load measuring installations, slip rings and general crane modernisation. Meccano crane There was particular interest in the Spohn & Burkhardt joysticks and operator consoles, which was also certainly due to the Lemniscaat Meccano crane which really lived up to its reputation as an eye catcher. The Meccano crane, whose movements (raising and lowering, opening and closing of the grab, luffing and turning) was controlled from an operator console, was made available to us by the Meccano club. The following trade fair at which you can visit the Elma stand is the Europort 2013, from 5 to 8 November, in Rotterdam. Motorcycling weekend Elma A number of Elma motorcycling fans spent the weekend of June 6th to 9th in the German Eiffel area, in order to tour this motorcycling paradise. The final destination, in the heart of the Eiffel, the Bikers’ monument in Daun, turned out to be further away than initially assumed. On the way there, Dick Varel’s chopper broke down before even leaving the Netherlands. Although Elma as a company is known for its specialisation in electric drive technology, there was also plenty of knowhow of combustion engines. Once the engine had been taken apart, the fuel pump repaired and reassembled, the trip could be continued. Replace a capacitor On day two, Mike Klasens’ chopper gave up the ghost shortly after the start. Once again, the riders joined forces to replace a capacitor for the ignition this time around, so that the Elma Motor club could enjoy a sun-drenched road trip in the Eiffel. The “adventurous” weekend was concluded with a fun barbecue. elma update | juli 2013 3 update Elma services attractions Oud Valkeveen is an adventure park in the Dutch municipality of Naarden in the Noord-Holland province. The park is located in the Valkeveen neighbourhood, to the extreme north of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug region. The country estate which is home to Oud Valkeveen was formerly known as “Oud Naarden” and was owned by a rich resident of Amsterdam who purchased it and had a farm built and named Valkeveen. Zuiderzee After 1880, a steam tram connection was built between Amsterdam and the Gooi area, and was a popular way of visiting the country estate for a day out, which included the beautiful beach on the Zuiderzee. In order to cater for all these visitors, the owners of the country estate farm established a pancake restaurant in the farm. In- and outdoor playground In 1930, a playground was added adjacent to the pancake restaurant. By now, the playground has grown to become a large indoor and outdoor adventure park featuring many attractions, such as: Swing ship, Beehive merry-go-round, Freefall tower, Dodgems, Water bikes, Rollercoaster, Oldtimer track and many other attractions, see www.oudvalkeveen.nl Elma Projects Last year, Elma BV was requested to service the attractions at Oud Valkeveen. Over the past months, the work conducted has included replacement of control components, the adjustment and replacement of frequency controllers, the replacement of motors and the adaptation of operating panels. Elma Project is specialised in the design of drive and control units for mobile attractions and playground attractions. Such installations are designed and commissioned according to the TÜV requirements.
