Conservationists are by nature optimists. We embrace the mission of protecting and preserving the rich diversity of life in Canada knowing full well our work may not yield
results for many years. Successful conservation is often the work of decades of careful stewardship of the places we secure and the species they sustain. Our mission gives us hope that
the landscapes we love today will still be here for others to enjoy tomorrow.
That is why this has been a great year to work with the Nature Conservancy of Canada
(NCC) . In challenging economic times we see opportunity. We focus not on the immediate,
but on the long-term impact of our efforts, and that gives us hope.
We invite you to read through the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s annual report for
-. Celebrate with us the success stories in each of our seven regions. Together with
our partners and supporters in the past year we have protected  properties across this
country, securing more than , acres (, hectares). Through prudent management
we have ensured that  percent of our funds continue to go directly to on-the-ground conservation work. Your generous investments in conservation are generating great returns.
Canadians are increasingly aware of environmental concerns. In a Canadian Press
Harris-Decima poll (August ),  percent of respondents said the environment should
be just as much a priority for governments as the economy. They know this is not the
time to cut back our work conserving essential habitat for species at risk – safeguarding the
land and water we all need to survive.
Our careful management over the past year has positioned us well to continue to tackle the
conservation challenges ahead. We are inspired by the many individuals and organizations
who are dedicated to helping us find creative conservation solutions – who share with us the
hope that we are making a real difference for nature, for now and for ever.

In the past year, we continued to work
on a landscape scale, protecting properties
such as: our largest native grassland
conservation project in British Columbia
in the Thompson-Nicola Valley; eight
islands in Ontario’s Northwestern Lake Superior Coast Natural Area; and the largest
private nature reserve east of the Rockies
in Quebec’s Green Mountains.
Through NCC’ s  Conservation Blueprints
covering  ecoregions, along with
our  Natural Area Conservation Plans,
we are now the only national non-profit
conservation organization with detailed information about the species and conservation status of Canada’s southern ecoregions
and their native biodiversity.

Our stewardship team has almost doubled
in size in the past few years, allowing us
to manage our properties more effectively.
In addition, thanks to increased funding
from Shell Canada Limited, this year
 university and college students performed
critical stewardship activities on NCC properties in each province while receiving on-theground training. Through our Conservation
Volunteers program, in  more than ,
volunteers participated
in crucial management and restoration activities across the country. Our Stewardship Endowment Fund grew from  million
to  million in the past five years, further
ensuring we have the necessary funds
to care for our properties in the long term.

Whether they are non-profit organizations,
corporations, individuals or governments
at all levels, thousands of Canadians believe
in the importance of NCC’ s work. NCC
is grateful for a new partnership with TransCanada Corporation, which will invest .
million in NCC’ s work in Alberta
and Saskatchewan. In New Brunswick, the
Province will invest . million to
assist in NCC’ s conservation work, while
on Earth Day  the Government of Manitoba announced it will invest  million in
NCC’ s work.
BRITISH COLUMBIA REGION
More than a dozen researchers from five
North American universities visited the
living laboratory at the Cowichan Garry Oak
Preserve (CGOP) to conduct research
that will help NCC and others to better understand and restore unique Garry Oak
ecosystems. In the spring the BC Region celebrated the  th anniversary of the CGOP.
NCC completed the first year of its Marine
Conservation Program and expanded its participation in the BC Marine Conservation
Analysis – a province-wide, multistakeholder
project that aims to protect marine biodiversity. NCC is researching the legal means to
protect the land beneath the ocean and
by extension the target species that live there.

The BC Region completed its largest
grassland project to date in an agreement
that protects almost , acres
(, hectares) of the most intact native
grasslands in the Thompson-Nicola valley.
The Frolek Ranch joins a growing list
of family-run ranches that incorporate the
conservation of BC ’s native grasslands
into their operations.

ALBERTA REGION
One of the largest conservation easements
ever completed in Canada was signed
by the late Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman’s son,
Bob Seaman, and executors of Doc’s estate.
This agreement with NCC will conserve
, acres (, hectares) of private
OH Ranch lands bordering Kananaskis
Country. Combined with the adjacent Crown
grazing leases, more than , acres
(, hectares) have been conserved.
NCC launched a program to influence
the positive management of nearly
, acres (, hectares) around the
,-acre (,-hectare) Sandstone
Ranch. Through the stewardship credit program at the Sandstone Ranch
Grazing Co-op, members receive credits
for completing stewardship work on
the ranch and on their own ranches.
NCC partnered with the Foothills Research
Institute and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
to integrate the groups’ data on
White Bark Pine, Limber Pine, Grizzly Bear
and other species into Natural Area
Conservation Plans for the eastern slopes
of the Rocky Mountains.

NCC continues to be involved in an international bison genetics project conducted by
Texas A&M University, which has found

Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation
Area (OMB) is free of cattle genes. This
includes  Plains Bison calves born at OMB
in the spring of .
More than  trees and shrubs were
planted at the Echo Creek project near Fort
Qu’Appelle during the Saskatchewan
Region’s first Conservation Volunteers event
of the season. NCC stewardship staff
worked alongside students from the Green
Team at O’Neill High School and
their teachers, staff from SaskPower and
other volunteers.
The Saskatchewan Region expanded its holdings in the Central Missouri Coteau Natural
Area. The acquisition of the
,-acre (-hectare) Molde  property
means that close to , acres
(, hectares) are now protected in this
 ‒  
area known for its large tracts of natural
prairie habitat, home to locally at-risk
species such as Loggerhead Shrike and Northern Leopard Frog and the nationally threatened Sprague’s Pipit.
MANITOBA REGION
The Manitoba Region worked with Walter
and Eleanor Loewen to protect a spectacular
-acre (-hectare) nature preserve
in the Superior Mixed Forest Ecoregion
of Manitoba. The Loewens donated a
conservation easement to NCC to protect
this natural area in perpetuity. They
donated the preserve itself to the Canadian
Mennonite University.
The Riding Mountain Aspen Parkland
Natural Area represents one of the last remaining ecologically functioning
landscapes in prairie Canada. NCC protected
more than , acres ( hectares) of ecologically significant land in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that surrounds Riding
Mountain National Park.
At more than , kilometres, the
Great Lakes shoreline is the world’s longest
freshwater coast. It is also biologically
rich, supporting sand dunes, rare species
and migratory bird stopover sites. NCC assessed the status and trends of Great Lakes
coastal terrestrial ecosystems in partnership
with the  State of the Lakes
Ecosystem Conference.
Following biological inventory work
at the Elbow Lake property in the Frontenac
Arch Natural Area, more than  species
were recorded. Twelve at-risk species, including Butternut tree, Golden-winged Warbler,
Blanding’s Turtle and Five-lined Skink will
now be factored into NCC’ s long-term management planning on the property.

QUEBEC REGION
NCC completed the acquisition of the coun-
try’s largest private nature reserve east
of the Rockies. More than , acres
(, hectares) are now protected by NCC
in the Green Mountain Nature Reserve.
NCC opened public hiking trails here to allow
the enjoyment of this area.
NCC now protects more than  percent
of the last large bogs southwest of Montreal,
having secured an additional  acres
( hectares) of habitat in the TeaFields.
The area is home to nine at-risk plant
species, including Clustered Sedge and
Yellow Screwstem.

In August of , NCC and the Province
of New Brunswick announced a three-year
.-million partnership for the protection
of the most ecologically sensitive areas in the
province. As a result of this partnership,
NCC has protected more than , acres
( hectares) of land in the -
fiscal year, including more than  acres
( hectares) at Johnson’s Mills.
NCC is happy to have protected an additional
 acres ( hectares) at Port Joli along
Nova Scotia’s south shore. With only a few
days left to raise the remaining , required to close the purchase, NCC launched a
public appeal to raise the funds. Resulting
media coverage helped NCC raise the necessary funds to secure the property.
With the acquisition of the -acre (ninehectare) Brooms Brook property in the Grand
Ontario Region
Codroy Estuary, this ongoing land assembly
will ensure that Newfoundland and
Labrador’s only Ramsar Wetland of International Importance remains protected
for future generations. NCC’s outreach and
community events in southwest Newfoundland have fostered strong community involvement through Conservation Volunteers events
and employing local youth.
In PEI , Conservation Volunteers removed debris off the pristine sand dunes at
St. Peters Lake Run and learned about the endangered Piping Plover with experts
from the Island Nature Trust. The highlight
for volunteers was seeing numerous
globally endangered Piping Plovers on the adjacent beach.

The fair summarization of the complete financial statements is the responsibility of management. Our responsibility, in accordance with the applicable Assurance Guideline
of The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, is to report on the summarized
financial statements.
In our opinion, the accompanying financial statements fairly summarize, in all material respects, the related complete financial statements in accordance with the criteria described
in the Guideline referred to above.
These summarized financial statements do not contain all the disclosures required by Canadian generally accepted accounting principles. Readers are cautioned that these statements may

The Nature Conservancy of Canada [the “Conservancy”] follows the deferral method
of accounting for contributions.
 .                          
Purchased conservation lands and easements are recorded at cost when title is transferred.
The purchases are recorded as an expense to the extent that the purchase is internally
financed. When a loan is obtained in a subsequent year related to an internally financed purchase, an amount equal to the debt is transferred from invested in conservation lands
and easements to operating net assets. Repayments of debt related to property acquisitions
are expensed when made. The expense related to purchases and debt repayments is added
to net assets invested in conservation lands and easements.
Contributed conservation lands and easements are recorded at fair market value when
title is transferred. The contributions are recorded as revenue and expenses and also as an
asset offset by net assets invested in conservation lands and easements. The fair market
value of contributed conservation lands and easements is subject to review by regulatory
authorities and may be adjusted. The value of conservation lands and easements recorded
on the summarized statement of financial position is changed to reflect any adjustments offset
by a change in the net assets invested in conservation lands and easements balance.
Properties transferred to others are recorded as a reduction of net assets invested in conservation
lands and easements.
Conservation lands and easements, either purchased or donated, are assets held as part of
the Conservancy’s collection. Easements are legal agreements entered into by the Conservancy
under which a landowner voluntarily restricts or limits the type and amount of development
that may take place on his or her land to conserve its natural features. Once registered on title,
that agreement runs with the title and binds all future owners.

Substantially all of the Conservancy’s assets have been pledged as security in connection
with certain long-term debt. The debt has been incurred to fund acquisition of conservation land
and easements, property expenses and capital assets.

The Conservancy is subject to a claim for damages. The outcome of the claim is not determinable at this time. However, management believes the claim is without merit.
Losses, if any, related to the claim will be recorded in the period during which the liability
can be estimated.

The comparative financial statements have been reclassified from statements previously presented to conform to the presentation of the  financial statements.
