Lorenzo started with Rembrandt Pastels
in the mid 1980’s and he still considers
them his ‘workhorse’ pastels, although
he uses other pastel brands like Great
American. He studied at the Colorado
Institute of Art and the Art Students
League of Denver. Intensive private
study of the Impressionists and 19th
century American and Russian painters
have made him aware of the wonderful possibilities and
importance of painting from life. Lorenzo participates in many
prestigious national invitational group exhibitions, including
the Plein Air Painters of America and the Laguna Plein Air

Color charts made with the actual pastels are
the most accurate means of selecting color. We produce the
following color charts at Dakota Pastels. The charts we make
are on Somerset Satin Radiant White paper in an 8-1/2” x 11”
format and are lightly fixed with Perfix. You can also purchase an
uncolored blank chart to make your own color chart.

This American made pastel is buttery soft, resists crumbling and has an
expansive range of colors now being made in square sticks. (*Some inventory
remains of round sticks which will be shipped until all the old stock is phased
out.) The Great American line has the best value ranges available with a
pure color and either 5 or 6 tints! There is an extensive range of metallic and
pearlescent colors. Great American is also known for ‘unique’ and fun color

Soft Pastels
Unison
Unison has the most unique and dynamic range of colors of all the pastel lines. The
color range was designed as a total spectrum, with each color developed independently.
Unison does not use a system of pure colors mixed with black and white to form tints
as in other pastel lines. The Color Range sets of 18 are a great way to strengthen
weak areas in your palette and build up to buying the whole line without duplicating
colors. The Unison line is very consistent and makes a great foundation set! The Special
Collection colors are super pigmented to add punch to your palette and the Grey sets provide a very nice value selection.

Schmincke is an especially soft, velvety and intensely pigmented pastel
line. Only the purest pigments are used and in the highest possible
concentration while the binding compound is kept to a minimum.
The manufacturing process is almost entirely done by hand, guaranteeing homogenous quality and smoothness in the final product. The
pastels are amazingly consistent in softness throughout the entire color range from the very darkest to the lightest colors. Schmincke has a
great range of blues and violets! Color numbering system: 3-digit color number and a letter designating: B = +black D = pure color
H = +white M = ++white O = +++white. For example: 048D is the pure color of Quinacridone Violet.
FULL SET: This elegant dark stained box has a folding wood handle, dove tailed corners and four removable wood trays.

Individual pastels are now available! The square shape, creamy softness and stick size make this
pastel very popular with pastel artists! They are great for making broad strokes and fine lines, and
lay down super smooth. Terry Ludwig has expanded the number of sets available and changed
the names on others in his line of velvety soft pastels. The Arid Landscape features neutral greens,
clear blue skies and basic landscape colors; the Plein Air (formerly Paris) is a general selection of
on location colors; the Southwest focuses on the red rocks, big sky and brushy sage greens and
the Southeast contains warm greens, bright floral and misty blues. The Maggie Price Value set is
an exceptionally well thought out and presented set, particularly for artists new to pastel - a great
foundation set! There is a great range of 90 Greens that can be purchased in one complete set or
in 30 piece boxes of cool, warm or neutrals. The 30 Intense Darks I includes bright acidic greens, intense reds and eggplant purples and the
30 Intense Dark II includes deep browns, rich turquoises, shadowy blues and deep purples.

Sennelier has the largest selection of soft pastels with 525 colors made from
pure pigments and a natural binder that produces a pastel with a smooth
and velvety quality. Naturally occurring minerals from the Champagne
region of France are added to the pure pigments to produce exceptional
luminosity and to create the wonderful ranges from very dark to almost
white tints. Artists will notice some variation in softness of the pastel sticks due to the chemical composition of the pure pigments. The extensive
color range provides the broadest selection of dark hues (their most popular colors are the darkest blues and black greens) and tones. The bright
reds and yellows are especially intense. Half-stick sets are a great value and an economical way to sample this line. The 80 Plein Air half-stick is our

Diane Townsend has been making hand formed pastels since 1972. The pastels are truly handmade
and produced in very small batches, are very densely pigmented with great clarity and good covering
power. Diane uses a very simple 3 step value for each color: Dark, Pure Color & Light. The Off-White
and Pale colors (80D thru 90L) are a nice subtly tinted alternative to using traditional whites. The
Midnight colors (50D thru 53L) are a great alternative to blacks. There are sets of all 120 Solid pure
colors, 120 Light (L) and 120 Dark (D) variations of each color and 48 exotic colors set (10 fluorescent,
7 iridescent, 15 pearlescent and 16 metallic). NEW SETS: Hot = colors of fire and brimstone; Grey = mixed light and dark with cool
and warm; Light = warm and cool off whites with barely perceptible shifts in tonality; Purple & Violet = intense colors with red to blue
variations; Midnight = VERY dark, almost imperceptible shifts and Dark = a great rich undertone set with more perceptible color.
*There are no L or D variations of Bone Black #1 and Titanium White #10. The Light and Dark 120 sets have the Solid form of both these colors repeated in the set.

Terrages is a combination of the words terra (for earth) and gesture. The size, shape and consistency
of the stick make them great for bold gesture strokes but also responsive to a light touch. The
Terrages are made with a mixture of traditional pigments and pumice resulting in colors that are
very clean, not grey and chalky. Terrages are very smooth in application; they don’t feel extra gritty
and don’t get used up faster on coated papers. When working on a non-sanded surface the pumice
‘opens’ the surface of the paper aiding pigment bonding while also adding tooth for subsequent
layering. Traditional pastels layer very well over the Terrages.
Special Sets: The Wolf Kahn set has 12 vibrant colors with the new Wolf Kahn B set expanding the selection without duplication.
The Portrait and Landscape sets A & B allow adding on to a set without duplicating colors.

Girault has been producing these fine pastels since 1780! The Girault pastel has a
slightly firmer consistency than the softest pastels, yet they are very smooth and
dense when applied to paper. They are creamy without being overly soft. Girault
pastels work great for both covering large areas and for delicate detail work. The selection of greys and neutrals is outstanding. Girault is
great for plein air work, the size and consistency of the stick allows you to pack a lot into a small space!
FULL SETS: The full assortment is available packaged in six cardboard boxes (GISCARD300) or a deluxe wood box set (GISFULL300).

PASTEL PENCILS are great for sketching, detail work, and finished paintings. To make the pigment
durable enough to form a lead, the pastel is by necessity a little harder than pastel sticks. Care is required in sharpening
due to the combination of soft pastel lead and wood casing - make sure you have a fresh blade in your sharpener. All pastel

SHARPENERS The very delicate nature of the pastel lead in pastel pencils requires great care in sharpening.
The ‘soft’ pastel lead and the ‘hard’ wood barrel must be sharpened at the same time. The hand held brass sharpener is
consistently liked by our customers and with the replaceable blades can be kept sharp. The lead breakage is not always the
sharpener – if a pencil is dropped, the lead can break inside the barrel! It is easier to get a point if the taper is less elongated.
If the sharpener has an adjustable taper use the less elongated setting. In the case of the brass two-hole, use the bigger
opening (even with the smaller barrel pencils) as it has a shorter taper.

SHARPENERS – NEW SIZE!
Both Dahle sharpeners have an automatic cutting stop, adjustable
taper setting for sharp or blunt tip, a self-feeding mechanism, a table
mounting clamp and both can accommodate all the pastel pencil
sizes. The new 133 sharpener features a mechanism to hold the
auto feeder in place while you insert the pencil – a nice feature. The
Solingen Steel cutting head is virtually identical on the two machines,
although the Dahle 133 cutter has a sturdier metal mount to hold the
rotary blade. In tests here, we found the 133 to cut better!

OIL PASTELS are an extremely versatile medium. Unlike soft pastels, oil pastels have a binder that
holds them to the painting surface. They are responsive to a wide variety of techniques from direct drawing to
painterly methods. Oil pastels can be blended by rubbing, use of colorless blenders, or by wash methods utilizing
mineral spirits. Oil pastels have a vegetable, mineral or synthetic oil base (not linseed oil as used in oil paints)
therefore do not require a primed surface.

FIXATIVES FOR SOFT PASTELS
Fixatives
We offer a selection of high quality fixatives that function as both
workable and final fixes. Spray fixatives are best applied in multiple
thin coats rather than one heavy coat to avoid pooling of fixative
or over saturating the pastel surface. The dilemma to fix or not to
fix is always a question of balance between affecting the color and
protecting the fragile pastel. Color shift will be evident to some extent
with any fixative applied to the surface of a soft pastel painting. Shift
is most noticeable in very light colors. To ‘fix’ the multifaceted pastel
particles, they are coated with fixative that sticks them to each other
and the surface. The coating reflects light in a different manner,
causing the appearance of the color shifting or darkening.

The Artist’s Air Filter
System is designed
to attach directly to
your easel (however
it can be used
either vertically
or horizontally
on a table) - right
where pastel dust
and other airborne
materials or solvents
accumulate! The
artwork sits on top
of the collector box
that has a grid rack
allowing pastel
dust to fall directly
into the box. This
system filters and
cleans your studio
air rather than just
venting the air
and pollutants outside. The system collects airborne dusts and
vapors (from solvents) and sends them through an activated
carbon filter and a HEPA filter, and returns clean air to the
room. The filter system goes through four phases: 1) a pre-filter
to stop large particles, 2) the carbon bed filter absorbs gases
and odors, 3) two anti-microbial filters kill airborne microbes,
4) a HEPA filter traps airborne particles.
The Artist Air is built to clean the air of a 1200 square foot
space for about the same energy consumption as a standard
light bulb. There are three fan settings with the highest
setting generating noise equivalent to a typical house

pastel customers. The Pastel Portfolios are designed to transport and
store your pastel work in progress or when completed. The portfolios
are classic black hard cover with a scuff and water resistant surface.

The inserts are made with 100% cotton Coventry Rag backing paper
and 8 sheets of glassine that are stapled and tape bound on two

almost any treatment! The surface on the Wallis papers is a neutral pH, pigmented
coating with an inert white aluminum oxide abrasive used to create the texture. The
durable coating can be tinted or under painted using water, alcohol or solvent based
media (try our new Art Spectrum Inks) and will withstand extensive scrubbing and reworking.
MUSEUM: The Museum grade of Wallis paper is produced on a 100% cotton rag paper. The paper is slightly heavier, with one more coat
of primer on both the front and back surface of the paper. Museum is recommended for any technique that requires wetting the surface.

La Carte pastel card has a wonderful working surface produced on a heavy weight archival stock. The surface is a finely ground pH neutral
vegetable flake and cork that is applied by hand. The sumptuous surface is very uniform and wonderfully abrasive, promoting excellent

The exquisite velvety surface of this coated sheet is produced on
Rives BFK 100% cotton paper. A mixture of two grades of silica,
methylcellulose, liquid adhesive, chalk, whiting and water is hand
brushed on the paper. Several passes are made to achieve an incredibly
smooth, even surface. The resulting surface is like very
fine sandpaper. The coating is clear, with coloration coming from
the BFK papers. The Townsend paper is completely archival and

Pastel Primer is an acrylic primer with a fine tooth that can be
applied to almost any non-oily surface. The primer is light fast,
permanent, non-toxic and available in 19 colors (that match their
Colourfix papers) and clear. The colors can be mixed with each
other or tinted with acrylic paint (or the new Liquid Spectrum) and
applied with a brush, roller or sponge. The primer is quite fluid, but
can be thinned with a small amount of water for a finer finish. If
the surface is too rough, it may be sanded after thoroughly dried.

Gatorfoam
3/16” PAINTING & MOUNTING BOARDS
Gatorfoam is an ideal surface to prime for pastels and for making
plein air boards! It accepts the pastel grounds wonderfully
without buckling. It is also lightweight, archival and non-warping
which make it ideal as the backing board, particularly for large
work. Gatorfoam is a rugged, durable, warp resistant board
with an exceptionally hard, smooth surface that resists dents
and blemishes. The core is polystyrene foam bonded on both
sides with Luxcell (wood fiber veneers impregnated with resin)
facings. Gatorfoam can be painted with acrylic or oil, although it
is recommended that the core material (if exposed at the edges)
be sealed with an acrylic primer before using a solvent base paint
or primer. Gatorfoam is completely archival.

Pastel Primer Recipe:
Prime the surface (paper, hardboard or Gatorfoam) with acrylic gesso. Dilute Golden Fine Pumice Gel with water (up to
20%) making the pumice gel more fluid and to get the pumice particles to float to the surface and provide texture when
applied. Add some powdered pumice to the mix when the gel is diluted, it should be the consistency of thick house paint.
Fluid acrylic paint can be added to the mixture to add color. Brush or roll on to the panel. Susan’s favorite technique is to
squirt fluid acrylic on the gesso surface and move it around with a brush until the surface is covered. When this is dry she
brushes on the Gel Mixture that will dry semi-transparent. Another coat can be added to increase the texture.

Liquid Spectrum is super-concentrated acrylic ink with extremely
heavy pigmentation, compatible with and great for tinting the
Art Spectrum primer. An ink rather than paint, it is well suited for
use on sanded pastel papers: covers exceptionally well, dries quick,
waterproof when dry and does not fill in the sanded surface! All colors are non-toxic, intermixable and fully lightfast. Liquid Spectrum inks
are very thin and can be applied with brush, roller, airbrush or pen. Bottles have a non-spill stopper for easy dispensing and measuring for
mixing the ink. An extender is available to make a mixture more transparent without weakening the ink film. The cleaner is used to remove
dried ink from tools and also works to remove ink from the artwork, even after the color has dried - like having an eraser for paint!

NEW! COMPACT PLEIN AIR SIZE
The Dakota Universal Travel boxes are the ultimate containers for pastel artists
on the go! The ‘Made in USA’ quality construction and highly functional design
provide a great way to get your pastels into the field and keep them organized
for easy use. The boxes are a brief case design with pastels stored on both sides
providing a tremendous carrying capacity. Pastels are held in place by foamcushioned panels that are secured with Velcro for easy fastening and removal.
Each box is constructed of maple and maple ply and has a folding suitcase handle.
Both sides of the box have wood interior divisions to help separate pastels. Each of
these divided sections has two flat pieces and one die-cut (slotted) piece of foam
that are removable. If you choose not to use the die-cut foam, the panels still hold
the pastels in place when closed and the pastel carrying capacity of the box is
greatly expanded.
The new Compact size fits inside a backpack or suitcase for travel. It’s greatest
advantage is being half the width, making it much easier to reach across the pastel
box while working on your painting!

TRIPOD FIELD EASEL
The Tripod Field Easel is a great plein air easel. Made of European
hardwood, it provides a sturdy and stable surface for a pastel box and
the versatility of a wide range of height adjustments and painting
angles. The canvas or board holder will accommodate up to a 27” size
and adjusts from horizontal to a forward tilt for pastels. Two folding
shelf brackets support a pastel box while two adjustable wood blocks
hold it in place. The Tripod Field Easel with our Compact or Small
Universal Travel Box makes a great Plein Air setup!
