Epson Stylus Pro 3800
™
Print like a professional
The Epson Stylus Pro 3800 is an innovative, professional A2 printer,
that both graphic arts professionals and advanced amateur
photographers can afford.
The complete range of professional printers
When it comes to excellence in print quality and durability, Epson pigment inks
are synonymous. Since their introduction to the market in 2000, when
Epson launched its first printer using pigment ink, these inks have had
enormous appeal to the photo and fine art markets in which quality and
durability are among the highest priorities.
In 2002, Epson released its UltraChrome™ Ink – an ink with such high levels
of performance that it established Epson as the defacto standard for professionals
in the photo, fine art and proofing markets. With the introduction of the advanced
UltraChrome™ K3 Ink in 2004, Epson once again reinforced its leadership in
delivering high quality professional printing solutions.
Professional printing
Micro Piezo™ print head technology
A key technology in Epson’s worldwide inkjet printing leadership,
Epson’s Micro Piezo print head is designed to extend print head
life significantly and deliver the highest image quality possible.
Unlike thermal inkjet technology, Epson’s Micro Piezo technology does
not “cook” the ink to eject the ink droplet but instead applies an electric
charge to the piezo element. This electrical charge swiftly changes the
form of the chamber plate creating a “pull, push, pull” motion which
rapidly brings the ink through to the ink chamber and then out through
the print head nozzle with superb accuracy onto the media.
The Epson Stylus™ Pro 3800 offers unparalleled output quality with
the highest resolution available at 2880dpi. This has been realised
through the synergistic effects of precision dot-control technology
that discharges a minimum dot size of 3.5 pl and a mechanical
structure that reinforces printing precision.
Epson UltraChrome™
K3 Ink overview
Professional media handling
UltraChrome™
Epson
Ink has established itself as the standard
among professionals and high-end users who desire high
quality and durability. Epson UltraChrome K3 is an improved
version of this ink and was developed based on feedback from
our customers.
Its new pigment and resin improves glossiness and D-max
readings on glossy media and exhibits reduced metamerism
(i.e. colour inconsistency under different light sources).
Additionally, three levels of black ink dramatically improve
grey balance, (which is the axis of colour imaging), and
produce superior black-and-white and colour prints.

To ensure the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 affords maximum media
handling capabilities, the printer has been designed with three
separate paper feed paths; an automatic sheet feeder, rear
manual feed and a front manual feed. The Epson Stylus Pro
3800 can support media up to 1.5mm thick and offers a wide
range of BorderFree sizes to suit all your printing requirements.
BorderFree sizes include; 4"x 6", 5"x 7", 8"x 10", A4, 11"x 14",
A3, A3+ and A2.
Excellence in colour printing
High ink density, greater colour stability and longer archivability are all attributes of
Epson UltraChrome™ K3 Ink, the most exciting advancement made in inkjet printing
today. Epson UltraChrome K3 Ink is an eight colour ink set that achieves new
heights in colour reproduction applying advanced ink technology and utilising
the characteristics of pigment ink covered in clear resin coating.
More details are expressed
thanks to the three levels
of black ink.
Accurate colour control
Epson UltraChrome K3 Ink
Epson UltraChrome K3 Ink uses three blacks to achieve a more stable and
accurate grey balance while also allowing for more accurate colour control due
to the smaller quantity of colour ink used. Professional users will appreciate this
high degree of colour accuracy when printing proofs, photographs and limited
edition fine art prints.
When Epson UltraChrome K3 Ink comes into contact with the substrate, the ink
quickly separates from the pigment particles which are absorbed deep into the
media. As a result, colours become resistant to change and stabilise quickly.
Superior short-term colour stability allows for high-precision contract proofing
and speeding-up of operations.

The characteristics of pigment ink and reduced colour ink consumption
minimise the effect created when objects having different spectral distributions
look alike under one light source, but appear different when viewed under
another. This results in more consistent looking prints, even when viewed
under different light sources.

No matter what you are printing, be it colour or blackand-white, Epson UltraChrome K3 Ink will easily
cover the gamut of complex images. The wide colour
gamut produced by UltraChrome K3 Ink, will faithfully
reproduce vivid colours and natural skin tones, while its
three level black ink technology will create beautifully
neutral black-and-white images that will last a lifetime.

Redefining black-and-white printing for the 21st century
Epson UltraChrome™ K3 Ink produces black-and-white photographs never
thought possible from a colour printer. Skin tones come alive as never before
and shadows reveal subtleties that were previously lost on other printers.
Three-level black ink technology
Over the years, the majority of silver halide photographs have been in colour. Despite this, many professional photographers choose
black-and-white photography due to the simple and direct expression of the medium, in addition to the power that black-and-white
photographs possess. Until now, it has been technically very difficult for black-and-white photographers to use digital photography
because of colour twists and short tonal gradation inherent in digital printers. Epson’s UltraChrome K3 Ink substantially reduces
these problems, allowing black-and-white photographers to fully express themselves using digital cameras and printers with
quality rivalling that of silver-halide processes.
Smooth tonal gradation
Higher D-max with glossy media
The three different density blacks found in Epson UltraChrome
K3 produce smooth gradation and substantially reduces
colour twist. The illustration below shows the smooth tonal
scale that is produced using Light Light Black ink.
The Photo Black ink in the Epson UltraChrome K3 ink set
has been improved, resulting in a higher D-max. This is very
useful for reproducing jet black areas. The end result are prints
containing a depth and richness never before experienced with
a digital colour printer.

High capacity ink 80ml cartridge
An innovative ink system developed specifically for the Epson
Stylus Pro 3800 makes it ideal in environments where large
and/or unattended printing is a matter of course.
The newly developed pressurised ink cartridge design neatly fits
into the Epson Stylus Pro 3800, making it even more suitable for
environments where space is at a premium.
Intellidge ink cartridge system
Cartridges will automatically track key data points such as ink
levels, ink type and usage rates for production cost estimates.
For greatly increased productivity, you can replace ink cartridges
on-the-fly, even during the middle of a print run, with no loss in
image quality or production time.
The secret why Epson Stylus Pro 3800 is smaller than other A2+
size printers is the newly developed pressured ink cartridge.
Epson technology made possible this incredibly productive
printer that carries as many as nine cartridges in its compact body.
High quality, fast printing
Speed and quality - two benchmarks of the Epson Stylus™ Pro 3800’s performance.
Exploiting the full potential of proven and further refined Epson inkjet technologies,
the new Epson Stylus Pro 3800 delivers outstanding throughput rates for even the
most demanding of print environments.
New Image Processing Technology
Epson Image Processing Technology maximises the performance of
Epson UltraChrome™ K3 Ink to produce images of the highest quality.
New mapping algorithms further reduce graininess at both low
and high resolutions, enabling the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 printer to
produce images of the highest standard, at any resolution.

extremely fast which further minimises downtime when switching
between black inks.
High-speed data throughput
Built-in interfaces
Through major improvements to the hardware, software
and firmware responsible for processing print image data,
the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 exhibits significantly faster
print times than previous models. For many production
environments where print time is a valuable commodity,
this dramatic reduction delivers substantial time savings
and greater revenue opportunities.
One of the distinct advantages of the Epson Stylus Pro
3800 is its flexibility in operating either as a standalone
printer or in a networked environment. Supporting
Microsoft® Windows® 2000 and XP, as well as Apple
Mac® OS X 10.2.8, the printer’s high-speed USB 2.0 and
in-built Type B Ethernet (10/100 Base Tx) capabilities
ensure it can quickly and easily be installed into almost
any desktop or network situation.
