It was over 100 years ago that my grandfather made that first bottle of
furniture polish in the family garage. His interest quickly turned to making
cars look showcar perfect and look where we are today. Meguiar’s is
now the top brand of car wax products worldwide for car guys who want
showcar perfect cars.
As a company, we started supporting car shows in the late ’40’s. I began
working car shows in the 1960’s with small 10” booths and a lot of passion
for what our products could do for cool cars. Today, on any given weekend,
our men in black are at almost every major car show in the world from
here in the UK to all of Europe, South Africa, the Middle East, Russia, China,
Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia and throughout America.

What is the difference between Non-Acid Wheel Cleaner (AA6416) and Hot Rims
All Wheel Cleaner (G9524)?
Non-Acid Wheel Cleaner (AA6416) is ideal on all alloy wheels and dress rims including
clearcoats, painted rims, chrome and plastic. Safe and effective for loosening brake
dust and grime buildup. Non-Acid Wheel Cleaner can also be used dry as part of our
waterless wash program. Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner (G9524) is ideal for all factorycoated wheels which are clearcoated. It removes tough road grime/ brake dust on
wheel surfaces. Note: this product is not suitable for application to aftermarket wheels,
motorcycle wheels, aftermarket brake components, anodized, magnesium, un-coated
and powder coated wheels. Always check manufacturer’s guidelines on cleaning and
maintaining your wheels.
What’s the difference between Quik Detailer, (A-33) and Final Inspection, (M-34)?

Final Inspection is a bodyshop safe, paintable product
Quik Detailer is not bodyshop safe and is not paintable
The terms bodyshop safe, and paintable, are terms Meguiar’s uses to describe products that do not contain any wax, silicones
or other ingredients that will negatively affect surface adhesion in a fresh paint environment. Final Inspection is specifically
formulated for use in bodyshop environments. Quik Detailer contains ingredients that could affect surface adhesion in a
bodyshop environment and should not be used in these areas. Both of these products are designed to maintain that “just
detailed” look between washes. Both of these products are high lubricity mist and wipe gloss
enhancers that are excellent for use as spray lubricants when claying. Both of these products
are excellent for maintaining your car’s finish in-between regular washing and waxing.
The primary difference is small, very small. Final Inspection was formulated specifically for
use in fresh paint environments. Final Inspection is available in both 473ml spray bottles and
3.78L containers. Quik Detailer is available in both 473ml, 710ml spray bottles. Quik Detailer, a
favorite among people who show and display their cars, can be found in just about any auto

Does Final Inspection, Ultimate Quik Detailer or Quik Detailer remove wax?
No. All are designed to add gloss and to prolong the life of your wax by safely removing fresh
contaminants before they can bond to your finish or corrode your coating of wax.
Do either Final Inspection, Quik Detailer or Ultimate Quik Detailer contain wax?
No. Both products are designed to remove contaminants from the surface and restore the shine and gloss of a freshly waxed
finish. There are no wax type ingredients in neither of these formulas. We highly recommend following our Quik Detailer or
our Final Inspection in combination with either Ultimate Quik Wax or Meguiar’s Quik Wax because these products contain
protective waxes, and more importantly, they make your paint darker and more clear while filling in and reducing fine
cobweb scratches.
Meguiar’s Ultimate Quik Wax and Meguiar’s Quik Wax instantly restore that just detailed look, even more so than any of our
quick detailers alone. They are not replacements for regular application of a dedicated wax. They are companion products to

Does NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0 contain any abrasives?
No, NXT is a unique formula that helps to minimise fine swirls without
damaging the paint surface. The product is designed to safely remove stubborn
stains and fine scratches and swirls, and is suited to all paint finishes including
clearcoat.
For surface prep, what’s the difference between Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner
(A3016) and ScratchX 2.0 (G10307)?
Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner safely removes minor surface contaminates, mild
water spots, light swirls, oxidation, minor stains and scuffmarks. ScratchX 2.0
is our most effective way to remove fine scratches and swirls by hand and
won’t dull off the paint finish. It’s great for removing swirl marks and etched in
water stains. Also ideal to revive entire paintwork even on the most sensitive of
clearcoat finishes.
Are Meguiar’s glass cleaners safe to use on tinted windows?
Meguiar’s No Smear Glass Cleaner and NXT Generation Glass Cleaner are both
tint window safe. They do not contain ammonia and are fast cleaning with a crystal clear result. Always test on small area of
tint if not sure.
What product should I use to clean and protect interior trim?
Meguiar’s Dash & Trim Foam Protectant eliminates messy overspray while cleaning, protecting and
conditioning the surface without looking greasy. It contains UV sunscreen to prevent fading and
premature ageing. Alternatively if you prefer a spray, Supreme Shine cleans, conditions and protects all
vinyl and rubber surfaces. It restores colour/shine providing cleaning agents to remove dirt and grime
adding lasting UV protection. For a fast interior trim touch up and also the cleaning of audio/visual
equipment use Quik Interior Detailer.
How do I remove polish/wax from exterior rubber and plastic trim?
Meguiar’s Gold Class Trim Detailer or Cloth & Trim Cleaner are ideal products for removal of polish/
wax residue from rubbers. They also restore colour and richness to discoloured trim/mouldings and are
suitable for use on all porous and non-porous black trim.
Is PlastX okay to use on painted plastic surfaces?
PlastX is not suited and we do not recommend it for use on painted plastic surfaces. Meguiar’s Plastic
Polish (M1008) and NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0 are both non-abrasive and dry clear leaving no white
residue. They each have a non-abrasive formula, which is safe to use on smooth painted plastic.
Do you have a product for the large areas of exterior trim often used on 4 wheel drives?
Our Exterior Trim Detailer (G13415) is perfect for this application. After washing and drying the vehicle, apply a thin even coat
to shine and protect all non-painted plastic surfaces.
What temperature ranges are best for applying cleaners, polishes, and waxes?
When we talk about surface temperatures, we need to consider three factors:

Surface temperature
Ambient temperature
Relative humidity
Surface temperature (actual surface temperature of the vehicle) The best surface temperature range for applying cleaners,
polishes, and protectants is approximately 15°C to 26°C . More importantly, the surface does not feel warm or hot to the touch.
Basically, when you’re working within this temperature range, it’s not too cold, and it’s not too warm to realize exceptional
results from just about any Meguiar’s product. Meguiar’s products will work easily within a much broader temperature range,
such as, 10°C to 32°C, but guaranteed best results will be achieved in the 15°C to 26°C range.

Ambient Temperature (outside temperature)
Ambient temperature is the room temperature or the temperature of the surrounding environment. It’s easily possible to
have a 5° to 10° difference in ambient temperature compared to surface temperature. This can make the difference between
a product that’s easy to work with, or hard to work with. Keep in mind, the hotter the ambient temperature, the quicker
products will dry.
Humidity (moisture in the air)
Simply put, humidity is moisture in the air. Technically there is Relative Humidity and Absolute Humidity, but as it relates to:

The simple explanation of moisture in the air, or more specifically, the amount of moisture in the air is the major factor,
which will affect how easily or potentially difficult a product will be to work with, or a procedure will be to perform. Low
humidity, in warm to hot temperatures, will act to cause liquids to evaporate and dry more quickly. This can make a product
difficult to work with or decrease the amount of time the product remains easily workable on the surface. High humidity in
cold temperatures can make products hard to work because it can dramatically increase the amount of time necessary for
the product to cure, dry or haze (depending on which product your using). Low humidity in low temperatures tends not to
be a factor in working with, cure times, and when applying and in the removal of cleaners, polishes, and protectants (Low
temperatures are a factor, but not low humidity in low temperatures). High humidity in high temperatures tends not to
be a factor in working with, cure times, and when applying and in the removal of cleaners, polishes, and protectants (High
temperatures are a factor, but not high humidity in high temperatures) Extreme temperatures, both cold and hot will make
any product more difficult to work with.
Direct sunlight
Direct sunlight will dramatically increase the surface temperature compared to ambient temperatures and make cleaners,
polishes and protectants extremely more difficult to apply, work and remove.
Air current/Wind
Air current/air flow, or windy conditions will act to increase the evaporation speed and potentially making some products
more difficult to apply, work, or remove. In some cases this can be a bonus, helping a wax to cure/dry more quickly.
Summary: The best conditions for using cleaners, polishes and protectants on automotive paints would be in a cool place,
out of direct sunlight, in a surface temperature range between 15°C and 26°C, with comfortable to low humidity, with a light
breeze to create the perfect conditions for detailing your car’s finish. Common sense and a good rule-of-thumb is to avoid
applying any product if the surface is too warm to touch with the palm of your hand comfortably.
Does a polish need to dry before removing it?
Unlike wax, a Meguiar’s polish does not need to dry before
removing it. This includes our pure polishes and our cleaner/
polishes. The way to properly use a Meguiar’s polish, is
to thoroughly work these products into the surface one
section at a time, then immediately remove the excess
before beginning the next section. Apply a Meguiar’s
polish as if you were applying a skin lotion to your skin. The
more you work a Meguiar’s polish into your car’s finish the
better. Do not apply too much at once however, because
only a certain amount of polish can penetrate the surface
at any one time. The excess polish will simply be removed
when you’re wiping off the excess product, thus wasting
time and product. Remember, thick, sloppy coatings of any
company’s products are more difficult to remove than thin,
even coatings.

What is gloss?
Gloss is an optical term that describes a surface’s ability
to reflect light. A high-gloss paint surface is one that
directly reflects light with minimum hazing or diffusion.
Dirt, grime, and other bonded contaminants on the
surface of a car’s paint absorb and diffuse light, reducing
gloss, and making the finish look dull and lifeless. No
paint will remain glossy if it is neglected and exposed
to environmental contamination for even a short period
of time. At one time, Meguiar’s R & D used specialized
instruments called “Gloss Meters” to try to test, measure
and determine the amount of gloss created by polishes
and waxes. What Meguiar’s discovered is that a machine
can never fully measure all of the visual dimensions produced by car care products on automotive finishes. The best test or
measure of gloss, shine, depth of colour, reflectivity, and overall beauty, is the test you perform when you look at your car’s
finish with your own two eyes.
Is washing and surface prep the same thing?
Washing is the process of removing loose dirt and grime from the
surface. Surface prep or “cleaning” is a separate process designed to
safely remove swirls, scratches, acid rain etchings, pore-imbedding
stains, tree sap, dead - oxidized paint, as well as stubborn surface
contaminants that regular washing will not remove. Paint that has been
neglected or that has undergone severe environmental contamination
should first be washed. After washing, you should evaluate the surface
to see if you have bonded contaminants. If you do, then we recommend
using Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay Kit to remove them safely. After claying, it’s time to remove any remaining defects with
a safe but effective paint cleaner like, ScratchX 2.0. ScratchX 2.0 contains mild diminishing abrasives and are safe to apply
by hand or with Meguiar’s G220 dual-action polisher on all paint finishes. After your finish has been thoroughly clayed and
cleaned to your satisfaction, you should then protect it (and all your hard work) with a coat or two of a premium quality wax.
Should I use a non-silicone product to maintain my car’s finish?
If you always want to insure your finish is wax and silicone free, just in case you decide to repaint it, or in case you are in an
accident and you want to do everything possible to make repainting your car as easy as it can be for your painter, then yes,
you could use non-silicone products to maintain your finish. If however, you are like the 99.9% of the population, and are more
concerned with protecting your car’s finish with a long lasting durable coating of wax, or a synthetic protectant, then the use

of products that contain silicone will pose no problems to your finish, and in fact will improve both application and removal of
products as well as help increase shine and protection.
What is the shelf life of Meguiar’s products?
You can typically expect Meguiar’s surface care formulations to retain their full effectiveness for three to five years, as long
as the container has been sealed tightly, and has not been frozen. Always shake Meguiar’s liquid products well before using,
especially if they have been sitting for an extended period of time.
I own a convertible, what should I use to clean and maintain the convertible top?
Vinyl Convertible Tops
The frequency in which you treat your vinyl top will depend on how your car is used. A car that is driven daily is exposed
to greater wear and tear than a car that is only driven occasionally on sunny days with the top folded down and away from
exposure to UV rays, dirt and dust, air-airborne pollution and fallout, etc. If your car is driven daily, then you’ll want to use a
vinyl protectant that contains a mild cleaner to clean the surface so that dirt isn’t trapped and sealed into the vinyl material
like a pure protectant product tends to do. For best results, follow the directions below:

Tip: For extremely dirty or neglected vinyl tops, Meguiar’s
recommends using a dedicated vinyl cleaner like M-39
Heavy-Duty Vinyl Cleaner to thoroughly clean the vinyl at
the beginning of the process.
Canvas Convertible Tops
Traditionally, canvas was a heavy woven cotton fabric
also called “duck”. Canvas tops have always been a little
harder to maintain because in its base form, cotton is
quite absorbent. This is a negative characteristic of simple
cotton canvas materials because when cotton gets wet
and stays wet, the moisture tends to harbour mould and
mildew as well as accelerate deterioration. Modern canvas
material incorporates polyester and other synthetic fibres
as well as specialty coatings to improve dirt, water, mould
and mildew resistance. This is where you have to be
careful - using the wrong cleaner can potentially remove
or degrade the performance of some of the features of
modern canvas requiring professional restoration work or
re-application of special coatings. Meguiar’s recommends
seeking out the manufacturer’s recommendations for the
care and maintenance of your particular canvas top.

Which Meguiar’s products can I use for the vinyl and trim components?
Meguiar’s vinyl and rubber protectants are superior to common protectants when it comes to preserving and beautifying
both vinyl and rubber components. Unlike most generic protectants on the market that coat-over, and seal dirt and stains
into the surface, Meguiar’s protectants are complex formulas that do more than merely leave behind a shiny, artificial looking,
slick surface with simple silicones. Meguiar’s understands that before you add protection, you must first remove unwanted
dirt and other contaminants that actively work to deteriorate the surface. That’s why many of Meguiar’s vinyl & rubber
protectants contain special cleaning agents that loosen, emulsify and remove dirt from the surface and deep into the pores
and microscopic surface imperfections so that they are not trapped into the surface.
Next, Meguiar’s trade secret conditioning agents penetrate into the surface to revitalize colour and vibrancy. These
conditioning agents also help to beautify and promote a long service life by

How do I know when I need to clay?
After you wash and dry your car, run the palm and
fingertips of your clean hand across the top surfaces.
Don’t be surprised if what you feel is rough and bumpy.
The roughness you feel is the presence of harmful
environmental bonded contaminants such as overspray,
fallout, brake dust, tree sap mist and more that have
bonded to your paint finish. Most of these contaminants
will wash right off if immediately addressed, however,
others bond to the finish and week by week, if not dealt
with, will gradually mask and blur the reflection. To
remove these bonded contaminants and bring back that
“smooth-as-glass” finish, this will require an extra step,
prior to polishing and waxing, commonly referred to as
“claying”. By utilizing Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay Kit,
you can, in less than 30 minutes, clay an entire vehicle, giving it back that “smooth-as-glass” feel… and properly preparing that
surface for a quality coat of wax. By doing this, your car will not only feel incredible, it will ensure the wax that you apply is
able to function properly.
How often should I clay?
Many factors play into how often claying is recommended for your vehicle (where your car is stored, how often you wash
it, what environmental elements are in your area, etc). However, you can easily determine for yourself how often to clay by
performing a simple test. Every time you wash, use Quik Detailer or Ultimate Quik Detailer on your vehicle, run the palm and
fingertips of your clean hand across the top surfaces. If you feel a rough, bumpy surface, it is time for you to clay. Depending
on the mix of factors that affect your vehicle, you could benefit from claying as often as weekly to as rarely as once a year.

How many uses can I get out of each clay bar?
The life cycle of clay is limited. The best way to tell when it is time to get a new piece of clay is to check the colour and texture
of the piece you are working with. As you rub the clay bar across the surface of your paint, you are picking up bonded
contaminants. After some time, you “fill up” the clay with these particulates. You can tell when the clay is “full” because it will
have a darkish colour and the clay might begin to feel rough to the touch. Another time to switch to a new piece of clay is if
you accidentally drop the piece you are working with. When clay hits the garage floor, it will pick up large dirt particles from
the floor, which can in turn scratch your vehicle if you continue using the clay. When your clay bar is “full” or has been dropped,
we recommend you throw away that piece and utilize a new piece of clay to avoid scratching the surface of your paint.
Do I clay before waxing?
Bonded contaminants prevent a freshly waxed surface from reflecting light and shining to its full potential and also repel the
adhesion of car wax. If you determine that your finish is not smooth-as-glass by feeling the surface after a wash, you should
consider claying prior to polishing or waxing. By prepping the surface properly, with clay your paint cleaners, polishes and
waxes will perform at a higher level.
What is the best lubricant to use for claying?
For best results, Meguiar’s Quik Detailer is the
recommended lubricant to use while claying a vehicle. Quik
Detailer contains lubricating agents that safely enable the
clay bar to glide across the surface of your paint, removing
bonding contaminants with the least elbow grease. Some
might advocate the use of water as a lubricant, but water
alone does not have the lubrication agents that a spray
detailer product will have, and will therefore compromise
the ease with which your clay moves across the paint
surface. We’ve packaged a 16 ounce bottle of Quik Detailer
in the Smooth Surface Clay Kit to provide you with
everything you need to effectively clay your car in one
system.
Does clay remove wax?
Yes, while clay is designed to remove above surface bonded contaminants, clay will also remove some wax protection from
the surface. We strongly recommend following the claying process with a coat of wax for maximum gloss and protection.
How do I store clay?
Clay needs to be stored in a cool, dry place in order to keep it clean and fresh. Between claying sessions, we recommend
storing your clay in the plastic case provided in our Smooth Surface Clay Kit. Simply mist the clay with Meguiar’s Quik Detailer,
place the piece of remaining clay in the storage container, and close the lid tightly. Be sure to keep that container in a cool, dry
location.

Does clay remove scratches and swirls?
No, clay does not remove scratches and swirls. Keep in mind, scratches, swirls, oxidation and stains are all imperfections that
are below the surface and require a specialized paint cleaner such as ScratchX 2.0 or Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner. Clay, on the
other hand, is designed specifically for above surface bonded contaminants, such as tree sap mist, industrial fallout, over-spray
and road tar. It is important to evaluate your surface to determine which method of imperfection correction your paint may
require. In some cases your vehicle may require the use of both clay and paint cleaners for optimal results.

How can I prevent oxidation?
For the most part, oxidation can only take place when the surface of your car’s finish has deteriorated from abuse or neglect
to the point where the once impermeable surface has become permeable and then left unprotected. Deterioration is caused
by, neglect, washing with detergent washes (dish soap), the leaching and drying-out effect due to repeated exposure to
inclement weather, baking in hot sun, natural wear and tear, and through the natural process of breaking down. (Law of
Entropy) The best way to prevent oxidation is to,
•
Always wash your vehicle’s finish using a non-detergent, premium car wash specifically formulated for automotive
finishes.
•
Add a protective coating of wax, (natural, synthetic, or blended) to your finish a minimum of 3-4 times a year. The most
important thing you can do to prevent oxidation besides washing is to protect the paint you presently have with a
protective coating. A good protective coating will act as a barrierfilm that will prevent moisture from coming into direct contact with
your paint.

Remove pore-imbedding stains (contaminants in the paint) by
using a premium paint cleaner or cleaner polish at least once a year
and more often if needed.
•
Whenever possible, park under cover.
•
Use a car cover to shield against airborne contamination and UV
rays.
Should I prep my paint before waxing?
The way to determine whether or not your car’s finish needs any pre-wax prep work is to evaluate the surface, immediately
after washing. A thorough surface evaluation will help you to determine whether or not you need to remove above surface
defects such as bonded contaminants with a clay bar, or below surface defects such as swirls, scratches, oxidation and poreimbedding stains.
Just because your paint has no major scratches or other obvious signs of damage doesn’t mean that your finish is as
flawlessly smooth as when your car was show room new. There are many kinds of subtle surface defects that if not corrected,
can prevent you from restoring that perfect gloss. There are two primary kinds of surface defects to look for, above surface
contaminants, and below surface defects.

Above surface defects can safely be removed using one of Meguiar’s clay bars together with one of Meguiar’s spray lubricants
like Quik Detailer, or Final Inspection. Below surface defects can take more experience and skill to remove depending on the
defect and the thickness of your paint. Removing below surface defects is performed by using Meguiar’s highly specialized
compounds, paint cleaners, cleaner/polishes, Soft Buff foam buffing pads, and in the case of serious defects, sometimes the
use of Meguiar’s Nikken Finishing papers are best suited for the job. Before attempting to remove any surface defect, we

time.
How do I perform a surface evaluation?
You’ll want to inspect the surface both visually, as well as
by physically using your sense of touch. Sometimes your
sense of touch can reveal defects the eyes cannot see.
First, wash and dry your vehicle. Then look along your
paint surface at an angle while noting the depth and
richness of the colour.
Search for:

A photographer’s loupe or magnifying glass will make it even easier to identify any problem areas. Ideally, do this in bright
sunlight as well as under strong indoor lights because some defects show up best under specific types of lighting conditions.
To find bonded contaminants that your eyes may have missed, slowly slide the face of your clean, dry hand along the surface
of your car’s finish after washing and drying your car. The surface should feel as smooth as glass. Any surface irregularities you
do feel are bonded contaminants that must be removed before polishing or waxing. The best way to remove above surface
bonded contaminants is to use Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay Kit. The advanced polyclay technology used to make our clay

How can I remove fresh stains, water spots, and smears on my car’s finish?
The best way to get rid of fresh stains, water spots and smears is to remove them as quickly as possible, before they have
a chance to bake into the paint or cause permanent damage. This is why Meguiar’s recommends keeping Meguiar’s Quik
Detailer, Ulimate Quik Detailer or Final Inspection and a microfibre polishing cloth like Meguiar’s Supreme Shine Microfiber in
the trunk or the back of your car, truck or SUV.
Having immediate access to the right tools to remove fresh bird droppings and other unwanted contaminants at a moments
notice can make the difference between an unsightly permanent stain or a showcar shine. If you have stubborn stains, spots
or smears that a quick detailer will not remove, your next best bet is to wash your car and then use one of Meguiar’s paint
cleaners like ScratchX 2.0 or Ultimate Compound to safely clean the surface and remove the offending contaminants.
Does Meguiar’s make a product that will fill-in and hide swirls and fine scratches in my car’s paint?
Yes. However, Meguiar’s has historically been known for creating the type of products that remove swirls and scratches, not
merely fill them in. Most Meguiar’s waxes, paint protectants, spray waxes and pure polishes can be used to successfully fill
in and hide fine scratches and swirls. However, the effect is only temporary and the scratches will reappear as the polish or
wax wears off. The best way to remove even fine scratches and swirls is to use a Meguiar’s paint cleaner like ScratchX 2.0 or
Ultimate Compound to actually level the finish and thus remove the scratch. Two products specifically formulated to bring
ease and effectiveness to eliminating those difficult to remove swirls, holograms and cobweb scratches are:

Does Meguiar’s make a product that will fill-in and hide deep scratches in my car’s paint?
No. Deep scratches cannot be filled in and in some cases cannot be removed. If you drag your fingernail over a scratch and
it gets caught, or slides into the scratch, then this scratch is too deep to hide and probably too deep to completely remove.
Meguiar’s believes the best way to approach surface defects like scratches is to remove them, not fill them in. In the case of
deeper scratches - for example someone keys your car while it’s parked in a parking lot - then sometimes you are better off
improving the scratch, not attempting to completely remove the scratch.
Removing a deep scratch could mean causing more harm than good if you go through the clear and expose the base coat, or
in the case of a single-stage paint, exposing the primer under the colour coat, which can then only be repaired by repainting
the affected area. For scratches like these you can often use a Meguiar’s paint cleaner to improve the scratch in such a way that
is difficult to see unless you know exactly where to look. Often times this is more acceptable than paying to have the panel or
section of your vehicle repainted.

What’s the difference between polish and wax?
Pure Polish is formulated to give paint a deep brilliant shine. It can be likened to
a skin moisturiser. Paint like skin can dry out and a combination of oils are used
to condition the paint and produce a deep rich gloss. A pure polish contains no
abrasives and provides no protection from the elements.
What’s the best advice Meguiar’s has to offer me for my brand new car, truck or
SUV?
Brand new cars, trucks, and SUVs are unique in that because they are new, the finish
should be in excellent condition right from the start. If you adopt just a few common
sense maintenance procedures using a few premium quality car care products, you
can keep your car’s finish looking show room new for the life of the car.
Good common sense maintenance procedures
•
Wash the car yourself using a premium quality car wash and a super thick microfibre wash mitt. Avoid automatic car
washes.
•
Store or park your car under cover whenever possible, this includes covered parking, parking in your garage or using a
premium quality car cover.
•
Apply a coating of a premium car wax regularly, at least 3-4 times a year. The more frequently you wash and wax your car’s
finish, the nicer it will look and the longer the “Just waxed” look will last.

Neglecting your car for months upon months without any attention, quickly results in a finish that goes from excellent
condition… to badly needs help.
•
As soon as you discover any kind of fresh contaminant on the finish, remove it as quickly as possible to prevent it etching
into the finish, potentially causing a permanent blemish or stain.

How do I remove the rough feeling from my paint?
Many environmental contaminants adhere to your paint so strongly, that even a high-quality car wash cannot remove them.
Some may be visible to your eye. Others you’ll detect when you pass your hand across the finish after washing and notice
it doesn’t feel as smooth as glass. All of these contaminants can reduce your shine and ultimately do permanent damage to
your paint. A safe, non-abrasive clay bar and high lubricity quick detailer like those found in Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay
Kit. Removing above surface contaminants and restoring a smooth surface to your paint finish is easily accomplished with
Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay Kit. (Never use sharp, abrasive rubbing and polishing compounds that will scratch your car’s
finish.)
How can I remove below surface defects like chemical etching, swirls, and scratches?
Chances are good that if your car’s finish needs to be clayed (the removal of above surface bonded contaminants), then it
also needs a thorough paint cleaning. Paint cleaning, using a paint cleaner (not to
be confused with the washing procedure and a car wash solution) is where you
clean and remove below surface defects such as pore-imbedding stains, oxidation,
scratches and swirls, road grime and other unsightly blemishes. By cleaning the paint
after claying the paint, you will restore the optical clarity of a clearcoat finish so that
the underlying colour coat can shine through. In the case of a non-clearcoat finish, a
good cleaning will bring out the full colour spectrum and richness of the colour coat.

What is clearcoat paint?
Automotive paints are a mixture of ingredients including resins, binders, fillers, additives, and carrying agents (typically
solvents, sometimes water). Clearcoat paint is simply paint, or resin without pigment. Non-clearcoat paints (also called singlestage paint) is paint (or resin) with pigment added to give the paint colour.
Today, approximately 95% of all cars, trucks, and SUVs coming out of the factory have a clearcoat finish. Clearcoat finishes
(also referred to as two-stage paint systems) are simply a layer of clear resin applied over the top of coloured resin. Although a
clearcoat does protect the basecoat, just like a single-stage finish, the clearcoat needs to be regularly maintained to keep it in
top shape.
Why are clearcoat finishes “Scratch Sensitive”?
Clearcoat finishes are incredibly sensitive to scratches and swirl marks. Because the top layer is clear, light reflects through
it and bounces back highlighting these scratches from behind. This tends to magnify defects making them easier for your
eyes to see. Although most clearcoat finishes are much harder and more resistant to oxidation than traditional lacquers and
enamels finishes, they still scratch very easily. For this reason clearcoat paints should never be worked on with old-fashioned,
harsh abrasive products like rubbing or polishing compounds. Even professionals in the refinishing and detailing industry can
make mistakes if they don’t keep up on evolving technologies in surface coatings and car care products. Before allowing a
bodyshop or detail shop to work on your car, we recommend you be upfront and ask them if they use Meguiar’s. Typically, the
sight of Meguiar’s bottles and Meguiar’s foam buffing pads abundantly displayed throughout a paint or detail shop should be
enough to convince you the shop in question is up-to-date and takes pride in their work.
How can I tell if I have a clearcoat finish?
To determine whether you have a clearcoat or a single-stage finish perform this simple test.
1. Find an inconspicuous area to test, such as the lower rear quarter panel of your car’s fender or inside the door jamb.
2. Clean this area first with car wash and water or Meguiar’s Quik Detailer or Ultimate Quik Detailer. You don’t want any dirt
or grime to interfere with your test.
3. Using a small piece of white cotton, such as a piece of terry cloth towel, rub a little paint cleaner or Cleaner/Wax into the
paint of this inconspicuous area.
After rubbing for a few moments, turn your cloth toward you and look to see if there is any colour from your paint on the
cloth. If you have a red car and you now have red paint residue on your cloth, this is a pretty good indicator that you have a
single stage finish. If you have a red car and you don’t see any red paint residue on your cloth, this is a pretty good indicator
that you have a clearcoat. To be 100% sure, you should test in a couple of different areas. Note: If you have a white, or very
light coloured car you should use a dark piece of cotton cloth and look for the colour of your car’s finish on it after rubbing
some paint cleaner or Cleaner/Wax into the finish for a few moments.
Can a clearcoat paint oxidize?
Yes, however the problem is not as common as it is with traditional paints like lacquers and enamels. The reason for this is
because of the molecular structure of modern paints is much tighter, more dense than traditional paints like lacquers and
enamels. This in-turn makes the pore structure tighter and denser. A dense molecule structure makes it difficult for water and
other detrimental substances to get into the paint through pores and other microscopic surface imperfections where they
cause oxidation and corrosion. Most oxidation problems can be avoided with even minimal attention (i.e. regular washing and
periodic waxing with a premium wax or paint protectant).
Can a clearcoat fade?
Technically speaking, since the clearcoat has no colour, it cannot fade or lose its brightness (at least if we use the above
definition). It can however become dull, but that’s not the same as fading and is more typically a sign of oxidation and the
build up of above surface contaminants. Can the colour coat below the clearcoat fade? In short, the answer is yes, however, it
depends upon the environment in which the car is exposed.

A car parked inside most of its life, far away from the equator will not show much sign of fading.

A car continually parked outside in a desert region close to the equator will fade more quickly and the results will be more
apparent over time because of the increased exposure to UV rays.
While these answers are technically correct, the non-technical answer to the question, “Can a clearcoat fade?”, is yes, but very
slowly. So slowly that most people cannot perceive any visual change over the course of normal day-to-day living or during
the length of the ownership of their car.
Can a clearcoat become dull?
Yes. Even more than yesterday’s paints, today’s clearcoat finishes look faded whenever the surface becomes contaminated by
above surface contaminants, things like:

Bird droppings
As contaminants build-up on the surface they reduce the reflective quality of the finish by creating a surface with somewhat
of a textured-feel to it. This in turn acts to diminish gloss (which is a direct result of how smooth your surface is), thus causing
the paint to look dull. The best way to prevent a clearcoat finish from becoming dull is to remove fresh contaminants as
quickly as possible with products like Meguiar’s Quik Detailer or Ultimate Quik Detailer and wash your car weekly with a
premium car wash solution such as:

Washing your car weekly is especially important if your car is a daily
driver and parked outdoors for any length of time. When contaminants
build up (you can tell if you have bonded contaminants by drawing the
clean face of your palm across the finish after washing and drying the
car and feel little bumps that are stuck to the finish), the best, fastest
and safest way to remove them and restore a smooth as glass surface is
to use Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay Kit.
Which Meguiar’s products are clearcoat safe?
Meguiar’s formulates its entire Consumer line of products for safe hand and machine application on clearcoat finishes. Some
of our Professional line of products can also be safely used on clearcoat finishes, such as our cleaner/polishes, pure polishes,
and of course, all of our waxes. Most of Meguiar’s paint cleaners, and aggressive compounds in the Professional line should
only be applied to a clearcoat finish by a professional painter or detailer who is experienced with the use of rotary buffer.
Which Meguiar’s products are safe for use on fresh paint?
Aftermarket / refinish paint jobs continue to cure for two to three months after being sprayed onto the finish. During this
curing time paint manufacturers recommend NOT to apply a “wax” or “protectant” to the finish. This is because solvents and
other volatile paint components are still evaporating out of the paint. However, you can safely use many of Meguiar’s washes
and polishes during this curing period on fresh paint without fear of causing any damage. Many of Meguiar’s polishes are wax
and silicone free, and will not seal the surface of the finish. This means the paint can continue to properly cure throughout the
recommended curing period.

SWIRL MARKS
What causes swirl marks?
Swirl marks are scratches in the finish. Sometimes these scratches are microscopic in size and only visible in bright light, like
direct sunlight or very intense artificial lights. Other swirl marks are very deep and are easily visible in just about any lighting
condition.
Swirl marks can generally be placed in two categories, which describes the origin of the swirls.
•
•
Cobweb-effect also called spider web scratches, car wash scratches, towel scratches etc.
Buffer Swirl or Holograms
Cobweb-effect
Cobweb-effect is the term Meguiar’s uses to describe the visual appearance of the
thousands, and even hundreds of thousands of tiny scratches inflicted into your car’s
finish through normal, everyday wear and tear. This includes:
•
Such as working from the bottom up potentially dragging dirt that has
accumulated on the bottom parts of the car to the cleaner upper section of the
car.
•
Using tatty, worn, dirty, or scratchy wash mitts, sponges, drying towels etc. It
doesn’t take much to inflict a scratch in today’s modern clearcoat finishes; every
chance you have to prevent inflicting scratches should be utilized.
•
Automatic car washes. Many automatic car washes still rely on spinning nylon
bristle brushes to scrub your car clean. While these brushes may clean really
well, they also instill many unnecessary scratches. Remember this also: any
automatic car wash system that relies on some type of material that comes into
direct contact with your car’s finish has the potential to instill scratches. You see it
doesn’t matter how soft, or state-of-the-art their system is, if the car or truck before you was a dirty 4-wheel drive, the dirt
removed from their finish can potentially still be in the system (imbedded in the brushes or what have you) whereupon it
can be rubbed across your car’s finish. Automatic car washes are usually not recommended if you want to keep your finish
scratch-free.
•
Hand Car Washes. Hand car washes while generally speaking are much safer as far as quality goes, you still have to insure
the employees are doing quality work and have been trained how to best wash a car without instilling scratches. As a
standard rule, anytime a wash mitt is dropped to the ground, it should not be returned to use but instead should be either
discarded or cleaned.
To avoid the cobweb-effect type swirls and scratches,
thoroughly wash all dirt particles from your finish before
applying polish or wax. Always use a microfibre polishing
cloth like the Meguiar’s Supreme Shine Microfiber or a
100% cotton, terry cloth towel for removing cleaners,
polishes, and waxes. Microfibre polishing cloths and terry
cloth towels have a “nap” (the little cotton loops), which
draws and traps abrasive particles or contaminants on
the surface up into the towel instead of allowing them to
scratch the sensitive paint. Avoid taking your car to car
washes if possible and wash your own car using premium
quality wash mitts, car wash solutions and follow by drying
your car using only a premium quality chamois, 100%
cotton towels, or Meguiar’s Water Magnet Drying Towel.
Buffer Swirls or Holograms
Buffer swirl, also referred to as holograms, are circular scratches grooved into the finish through either the improper use of
a rotary buffer, or using the wrong pads and chemicals with the rotary buffer. Buffer swirls can either be very deep or very
shallow, depending on how forcefully the were created and depending on the products and type of pad used while buffing.

How do I remove swirl marks?
•
Shallow swirls can be removed using light swirl removers such as ScratchX 2.0 (moderate), SwirlX (fine) or Ultimate
Compound (heavy). All of these products will safely remove swirls and fine scratches from your finish without using harsh
chemicals or sharp abrasives.
•
Light to moderate swirls can be removed using the Meguiar’s Dual-Action polisher, the appropriate Meguiar’s foam
buffing pad and the correct paint cleaner or cleaner/polish
•
Moderate to deep swirls will require a thorough machine cleaning using a rotary buffer, the appropriate Meguiar’s foam
buffing pad and the correct paint cleaner and/or cleaner polish.
Machine cleaning and polishing paint with a rotary buffer needs to be performed by a skilled and experienced professional.
Removing swirls by machine must be followed by an application of a polish and then a protective wax. If you are unsure as to
whether or not the swirl in your finish can be safely removed, take your car to a professional painter or detailer and ask them
for their opinion. Some swirl marks are too deep to safely remove and attempting to do so may result in buffing through the
top layer of paint.
WAXING & POLISHING
What type of wax is better? A paste wax, or liquid?
The difference between paste and liquid wax is primarily one of convenience and personal preference. Meguiar’s liquid
formulas provide the same protection as paste, and are easier and faster to apply.
Are polymer sealants safe/good for my car’s finish?
A high quality polymer sealant is good for your car’s finish, a poor quality polymer sealant may lull you into a false sense of
security because you think your car is protected when in reality, it’s not. Quality polymer sealants are noted for their ability
to offer longer lasting protection than traditional Carnauba-based waxes, but in recent years, there have been many inferior
formulations marketed at extremely high prices giving consumers the impression they are superior, thus justifying the
exorbitant price.
Are polymer sealants better than traditional Carnauba waxes?
If you’re looking for a highly water-resistant, detergent resistant, long lasting protectant, then a premium quality polymer

What is Carnauba wax?
Carnauba is the hardest natural occurring wax available. Carnauba is primarily harvested from palm trees in Brazil. The wax is
melted down and added to Meguiar’s formulations to enhance their durability and protection against the environment as well
as adding gloss to your car’s finish. Meguiar’s uses only #1 yellow Carnauba wax, the most costly and highest quality grade.
Do coloured waxes really work?
First, there are thousands of different colours used every year to coat the millions of cars
manufactured every year. Some paint companies offer over one hundred different hues of
white alone! There is no way that a limited selection of 8-12 different-coloured waxes can
even begin to hope to match the multiple different hues inherent in the particular colour of
your car, or anyone’s car for that matter. Second, most cars being manufactured today, and
in the last 10 years have a clearcoat finish. This top, clear layer of paint does not contain any
colour pigments whatsoever. It doesn’t make any common sense at all to apply a pigmented
or coloured wax on top of a paint that is as clear as the windshield you look through. To do so
would be to temporarily cloud, or discolour the original colour coat that is lying underneath
your clearcoat. You are creating an unnatural effect that will look even stranger as the
pigments in the wax fade.
If your goal is to have a great looking finish, then it makes more sense to spend your time and
effort up front performing good surface prep. This includes claying the surface to remove
bonded contaminants followed with paint cleaners like ScratchX 2.0 to remove defects instead
of trying to temporarily fill them in. Good surface prep is key to all great looking finishes, just
ask any professional detailer. For those of you looking for a one-step product that will restore

Do coloured waxes hide scratches?
No, Any concealment they do provide is temporary at best. Don’t be fooled by claims that colour-matched waxes can
remove scratches. Because most modern cars have a clearcoat finish, pigmented or coloured wax will only act to obscure
its transparency. This will not only look strange, but in the long run, it just won’t work. On a non-clearcoat paint, a coloured
wax may fill in and hide the scratch temporarily, but once the wax has worn off, the scratch will reappear. You are better
off removing the scratch with the right products then taking the band-aid approach of masking the defect. This is where

How long does a coating of wax last?
The life expectancy of a coat of wax depends on many things:
• How well the surface was prepared to accept the wax
• Local environment (normal conditions and extraordinary events)
• Condition of paint
• Number of hours exposed to outside conditions
• Quality of the wax used and method of application
• Quality of car wash used (dish soaps will remove wax)
Your best option in all cases is to rely on the highest quality surface care products available
and to try and match the wax to the surface to which you are applying it in conjunction
with the environment it is most commonly exposed to. For example: If your finish has been
severely neglected, you will achieve the best results using a three step paint restoration
system, which includes a specially formulated:

Are multiple coats of wax beneficial? (Layering)
That depends on what effect you are looking for: protection or beauty.
Protection
If your looking for the maximum protection possible, then one or two thin coats of wax, maybe even up to three thin coats
of wax, has the potential to create the most surface protection depending on the wax, the surface itself and whether or not
sufficient time has passed in-between each application. Of course the law of diminishing returns states that you will not
create exponentially greater layers of protection with each application, but Meguiar’s knows that a second, and sometimes
third application will insure uniform, thorough coverage over the majority of the surface, thus maximizing the protection.
Environmental conditions today demand more frequent washing and waxing in order to prevent costly damage to the outer
layers of paint. Just as important as a second, and possibly a third coating of wax is to provide the maximum amount of
protection in any one detailing session, (especially on the horizontal surfaces), it is also vitally important that you wax more
often to maintain your finish. This is especially true if your car is a daily driver exposed to the elements and parked outdoors
most of the time.
Beauty
Will more coats of a product make a finish deeper, darker,
and wetter looking with each additional application?
In a word: Possibly. Generally speaking, when trying to
take your car’s finish to its maximum potential for clarity,
gloss, shine and depth of colour, there comes a point,
or a plateau, that you will reach whereupon additional
applications of either polish or wax will not increase the
results of any of those categories. Of course, you are more
apt to reach this plateau if your skill level is high and if the
quality of your products is also very high.

Can Meguiar’s waxes be ‘layered’?
Meguiar’s waxes can be layered, but two things must be tended to when layering waxes. 1) You must use the right waxes
(“Layerable” waxes), and 2) You must recognize that at some point, “The Law of Diminishing Returns” takes effect.
Layerable waxes
A Layerable wax, is a wax that the protective ingredients used in the formula (natural and synthetic), are such that the
protective layer left behind will not only adhere to the paint, but in subsequent applications, will adhere to itself. It also means
that the carrying agents, be they solvent, water or something else, cannot be strong enough or in high enough concentrations
to re-liquify the previously applied layer, thus removing it during your attempt to add another layer. Layerable waxes are
primarily pure waxes, or protectants (as synthetic formulas are referred to) that do not contain chemical cleaners, or solvents
that will remove the previous layer.
There is an exception to this rule and that is that it is possible to first apply a cleaner wax, and then apply a pure wax or pure
synthetic over it.
The Law of Diminishing Returns
The law of diminishing returns as it relates to layering, a surface, such as an automotive paint, can only hold so much product
before all you’re doing is removing all subsequent coatings applied to the surface. That is to say, after the first, second and in
some cases a third application/coating, any more product applied to the surface is merely removed when you wipe the excess
off after waiting for the product to cure.
At this point you’ve reached a plateau (or limit), as to how much wax (natural or synthetic) a surface can hold. Once you reach
this plateau, all further applications of wax simply become excess that will be removed (and thus wasted), during wipe-off
because it has nowhere to attach and layer.
Why must I wax my car paint so often?
Your car is being constantly bombarded by contaminants each
and every day. All of these contaminants take a toll on your car’s
paint if the finish is not frequently washed and waxed. Imagine
what would happen if you only brushed your teeth once a year.
The buildup could lead to costly dental repairs. And your teeth
might never look as good as they did before. Your car’s paint
is constantly exposed to the elements and needs regular care
to keep it looking its best at all times. If you neglect your car’s
finish for a long enough time, a quality repaint could easily cost
over $6,000. If you decide to sell your vehicle without a new paint job, it could cost you anywhere from a few hundred to over
$8,000 in lost trade-in value, depending upon the age and type of automobile you have. You can expect substantially more at
resale time from a well-detailed, sharp-looking vehicle, instead of one that’s showing its age.
How often should I wax my car’s paint?
There is no standard answer regarding how often you should wax. Many variables influence the life of the wax:

What is right for a car kept outdoors all day in the Midwest is not right for a car kept 80% indoors in San Antonio. Another
factor to consider is your personal desires for how your car should look. If you always want your car to look like it just won a
car show, then you can and should apply a pure polish or premium wax often. Meguiar’s pure polishes can be applied as often
as you like, even daily with no negative effect, and in fact will keep you car looking showroom new for the life of the car if
you were in fact to polish it each and every day. Meguiar’s polish/waxes and pure waxes can also be used often for maximum
protection and eye dazzling good looks. Whichever product you decide to choose, the important point is to begin a regular
cycle of car care and stick to it.

How can I tell if I need to apply wax or polish to my car’s paint again?
Clearcoat paints make it more difficult to determine when your car needs waxing or polishing. It may need attention far
sooner than its appearance would indicate. Two simple tests can tell you if your car needs waxing: After washing and drying
your car, take a clean, dry 100% cotton terry cloth towel fold it until you have a thick towel that your hand fits comfortably
across with now fingers hanging over the edges, and then push down on it and twist it in a clockwise/counter clockwise
manner. If you hear squeaking, that’s a sure sign you need to wax. Another sign is when products like Ultimate Quik Detailer
become slow and difficult to remove, this is a sure sign you paint needs a fresh coat of wax.
Do car waxes provide real UV protection?
Some waxes do contain UV-protection agents, but the amount of protection that a microscopically thin layer of wax can
provide is limited The primary goal of a wax is to protect the top layers of paint that contain UV-protection agents from the
paint manufacture. If you wash and wax your car regularly, your paint will be protected and you should suffer no major UV
damage over the normal course of the life of the car.
UV protection in a car wax formula is only an extra-dose of preventative maintenance, not the end-all, cure-all that some
companies would lead you to believe. UV protection for paint is much different from UV blocking ingredients for human skin.
The two formulas are nothing alike and work in drastically different ways. There is no correlation between the ratings applied
to the different levels of sun blocking protection for products intended for use on human skin and the ingredients available
for use in an automotive wax formula.
What is a good way to remove wax from my car’s finish?
Meguiar’s recommends a Meguiar’s Supreme Shine Microfiber cloth or 100% cotton terry cloth towels - they both have their
place in the detailing industry.
100% Cotton Terry Cloth
A high quality 100% cotton terry cloth towel can be used for both applying and removing just about any Meguiar’s product.
For this reason 100% cotton towels are quite versatile. Some people prefer removing compounds, paint cleaners, and pure
polishes with terry cloth towels because of the larger fibre loop size that makes up the nap. This larger loop size can be quite
helpful when you’re trying to break-up continuous layers
of liquid, semi-liquid, and dried product. 100% cotton
terry cloth towels (or pieces of terry cloth towels) are also
quite useful for applying Meguiar’s products. For example,
a small piece of 100% terry cloth towel can be quite
useful for applying Gold Class Trim Detailer to narrow,
but long pieces of rubber trim, such as the rubber trim
around windows. The nap helps to clean the rubber trim
by agitating it and loosening any contamination on the
surface while pushing the product’s rich conditioners into
the rubber for a protective, long lasting dark appearance.
Terry cloth towels absorb water really well and are an
excellent material for removing water after washing and
removing quick detailers like Meguiar’s Quik Detailer, and
Final Inspection.
Microfibre
Premium quality microfibre polishing cloths like the Meguiar’s Supreme Shine are made using the highest quality microfibre
technology available. Microfibre is a unique blend of two tiny synthetic fibres - polyester and polyamide. Generally speaking,
towels made with traditional polyester and/or nylon fibers are too scratchy for use to remove polishes and waxes from highly
polished automotive finishes because they tend to inflict scratches and swirls. This negative characteristic is completely
eliminated however, when these same fibres are miniaturized to 1/100 the diameter of a human hair, and 300 times smaller
than conventional terry cloth fibres. In their miniaturized size, these fibres take on new characteristics that do not exist in their
larger size. This new characteristic is the ability to adsorb liquids

Adsorb versus Absorb
•
Adsorb means to attract and hold to the surface substances, liquids, or gasses.
•
Absorb means to take-up or draw something into itself through pores or interstices.
Microfibres adsorb liquids, semi-liquids, and dried product incredibly well. This includes both water and oil based products,
which makes them ideally suited for removing many Meguiar’s products. Another unique characteristic attributed to
the microscopic size of the fibres in a microfibre polishing cloth is the ability for these miniature fibres to get into small
microscopic surface imperfections and remove liquid and semi-liquid films like polish and wax. At the microscopic level,
your paint is not completely smooth and flat, but actually resembles a surface made up
of miniature hills and valleys, with holes (pores), and interstices (microscopic fissures and
scratches).
Microfibre polishing cloths are better at removing products imbedded into these surface
imperfections, dramatically better than the larger fibres found in terry cloth towels. Another
unique feature of premium quality microfibre polishing cloths is the unique triangular
shape of the cross-section of each of the fibres. This triangular shaped cross-section enables
these fibres to slice into coatings such as polish and wax lifting and removing them from
the surface (much like a miniature squeegee) as they are wiped across the surface. The
above three characteristics, 1) miniature size, 2) ability to adsorb, and 3) triangular shaped
cross-section, enables microfibre polishing cloths to lift and remove liquid and semi-liquid
films better than traditional towels and with dramatically much less pressure. This is quite
apparent when trying to remove oily smears after the majority of the product has already
been removed.
Diapers, T-shirts and Flannel – Flat sheen cloths
Meguiar’s research concludes that wiping cloths with a flat sheen or surface, like diapers, t-shirts and flannel, increase the
potential for inflicting scratches because there is no place for contaminants to go/hide/bury into should they become trapped
between your paint and the flat surface of these types of wiping materials.
On the other hand, both 100% cotton terry cloth towels and premium microfibre polishing cloths such as Meguiar’s Supreme
Shine offer a thick, plush nap that will draw contaminants up into it providing a level of protection that flat sheen cloths don’t
offer.

Another benefit to terry cloth and microfibre polishing cloths are they can capture and hold more product from the surface
because of their greater surface area compared to flat sheen cloths. Each of the fibres in a microfibre polishing cloth and each
of the little cotton loops of a terry cloth towel dramatically increase the total useable surface area of the cloth.

How do I remove wax from vinyl trim, plastic cladding and rubber parts?
The best way to remove wax from vinyl or rubber is to use Meguiar’s #39 Heavy Duty Vinyl Cleaner from our professional
range. #39 will emulsify and breakdown the dry wax residue. If you have a tough time locating #39, any all-purpose cleaner
should also do the job. Agitating the cleaner by gently scrubbing the surface with a soft bristle brush, like a toothbrush, can
help break up the wax Once you have cleaned the vinyl and/or rubber surface, bring back the natural colour and help protect
it with an application of a vinyl/rubber conditioner and protectant like NXT Tech Protectant, Natural Shine, Gold Class Vinyl/
Rubber Protectant, M-40 Vinyl and Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner, or Gold Class Trim Detailer.
How long do I need to let a wax dry before removing it?
Under normal conditions, Meguiar’s waxes and paint protectants take approximately 15 to 20 minutes to dry. To determine
whether the wax or paint protectant has cured enough to remove it, you can perform a “Swipe test”. To perform a Swipe Test,
take your index finger and swipe it across the film of wax or paint protectant on your finish. If your finger wipes away the dried
residue and the surface below is shiny, then the wax, or paint protectant, is ready to be removed. If however, you swipe the
finish and the product streaks or smears, you need to allow a little more time for it to fully cure. One popular misconception
that we would like to address is the false idea that the thicker the layer of wax or paint protectant you apply at one time, the
more protection you will leave behind. This is not true. Only a small amount of wax actually bonds to the finish during each
application, while the rest is simply removed when you wipe the excess off the surface. Multiple thin coats are better than one
thick coat. (See Layering)
What’s the best wax for my car?
Over the years, we have developed some very unique and highly specialized waxes that have attained their own following of
loyal fans. All of the waxes Meguiar’s manufactures are exclusive formulas, each offering the end-user its own unique features
and benefits. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of experimenting with our different waxes to find just the right one that best suits
your particular set of circumstances as well as your personal tastes.
Some things to consider when choosing a wax are the environmental conditions in your area and the amount of time you
are willing to invest in waxing each year. All new cars, trucks, and SUVs require a non-abrasive wax that is safe for clearcoat
paints. All Meguiar’s waxes are non-abrasive, this means Meguiar’s waxes contain no ingredients that will abrade the paint
or instill a scratch. You can safely use any Meguiar’s wax on any new car’s finish and easily produce excellent results. That
said, some Meguiar’s waxes are more suited for a finish that is new and in excellent condition, while some Meguiar’s waxes
offer a light chemical cleaner for finishes in less than perfect condition. A finish in new or excellent condition would benefit
more from a Meguiar’s polish/wax or pure wax because they don’t contain any chemical cleaners and instead offer a more
concentrated blend of polishing oils and protection ingredients.
A finish that has been neglected, or is a few years old, would benefit more from a Meguiar’s Cleaner/Wax because
the non-abrasive chemical cleaners will safely and effectively clean the surface by removing contaminants
producing a more clear and glossy finish. Remember, your end results are always determined by the condition of the surface
to start with, and the prep work you do before applying a protective coating. If your finish is severely neglected, you might
consider using a dedicated paint cleaner before applying any wax.

How soon can I wax my new car?
A new car with a factory paint job can be waxed the moment it is rolled out of the manufacturing plant. Cars that have
factory paint jobs are cured at much higher temperatures, sometimes as high as 300 degrees in special baking ovens. At a
factory level, the car goes through the painting and baking process without any of the rubber, plastic, and cloth components
installed. This is why they can expose the car and its fresh paint to such high temperatures. These high temperatures and
special paints used at the factory level insures the paint is fully cured by the time the car is completely assembled. Aftermarket paint finishes however, are cured at a much lower temperature to ensure the method of baking or heating the
paint doesn’t melt non-metal components such as wiring and vinyl. For this reason, it’s best to follow the specific paint
manufacturer’s recommendations for care and maintenance of fresh paint.
Most paint manufacturers that supply paint to the refinish industry recommend that you allow anywhere from 30 to 90 days
curing time after the paint is applied before you apply the first application of wax. To maintain your car’s fresh paint during the
recommended curing time you can safely use any of the below Meguiar’s pure polishes, which are not only safe for fresh paint
but help to enhance the curing process while making your paint look its absolute best.

How do I repair streaking that occurs after a polish or wax application?

Which Meguiar’s products should I use on my tyres?
The rubber of tyres contain an ingredient called Antiozonant. Antiozonant is an ingredient that helps to prevent the exterior
rubber surface from cracking, checking, oxidizing, and deteriorating. The rubber is designed in such a way as to constantly
work its way to the outside of the tyre and as such, continually replenish the exterior surface with fresh antiozonant. After the
antiozonant works its way to the outside of the tyre and is exposed to the ozone in the air, it turns brown. The technical term
for this effect is blooming. This is why you see a brown film on the surface your tyres.
You can wash your tyres with soap or an all-purpose cleaner and remove this film, but in a few weeks, it’s back. That’s because
the antiozonant continually works its way to the outside of the tyres every time you drive your car. To maintain your tyres
and keep them looking sharp with a deep, dark black colour, Meguiar’s offers six unique tyre dressings that treat the rubber

What is the best and safest way to clean my wheels?
Use the correct wheel cleaner
The best and safest way to remove brake dust, dirt, and road grime from wheels is to match the type of wheel cleaner to the
type of wheel you’re cleaning. Using the wrong wheel cleaner can lead to discolouring, dulling, and permanent staining. When
in doubt, contact the wheel manufacturer and ask them for their recommendations. When cleaning neglected or extremely
dirty wheels with extra heavy build-up of brake dust and road grime, instead of relying solely on a chemical cleaner for its
cleaning power, boost the power of your wheel cleaner by using either a soft wheel brush or quality household paint brush.
When it comes to cleaning extremely dirty wheels, many people seek-out an extra strong wheel cleaner to do all of the work,
when all the extra strength they really need can be found in their arms. Don’t make the mistake of trying to take the easy
way out by resorting to an extra strength cleaner that can potentially damage your wheels because it’s too strong. This is a

common mistake people make when they rely on cleaners that are too strong, or use common under the sink multi-purpose
cleaners that were never intended for use on their particular wheel surface.
Twice is Nice
Instead of using a more aggressive and potentially harmful cleaner on your car’s wheels, try cleaning your wheels twice using
a soft bristle wheel brush. Even a high quality household paintbrush along with a little extra elbow grease will help you get
you wheels clean easily and safely. Your first wheel cleaning will remove a majority of the built up brake dust and road grime.
This will allow the next application of wheel cleaner to go right to work on the built-up brake dust and road grime that was
underneath the first layer. By using a high quality wheel brush or a household paintbrush, you will effectively agitate the builtup brake dust and road grime enabling the wheel cleaning chemicals to penetrate, loosen, and break their grip on the surface
of your wheels. A second application will only take a few extra minutes and it will do a much better job of safely cleaning your
wheels, versus trying to get the job done quickly with only
one application. Of course, as Barry always says, “Frequent
car care is easy car care”. This goes for cleaning wheels
too. Washing your car often and thoroughly cleaning your
wheels each time you wash your car, including all of the
nooks and crannies, will prevent excessive brake dust and
road grime from building up in the first place. Applying a

MACHINE POLISHERS
Which is better for applying cleaners, polishes and waxes, machines like the rotary buffer, Meguiar’s G-220, Dualaction polisher or the tried and true method of applying products by hand?
This is not a “one is better than the other” issue. Each method offers its own unique benefits and features. Machines like rotary
buffers, dual action polishers, and orbital buffers are simply tools. Depending on the surface condition and what you’re trying
to accomplish, one may be better suited for the task over another. While hand application of Meguiar’s paint cleaners, cleaner/
polishes, pure polishes and waxes can achieve brilliant results a majority of the time, professional painters and detailers prefer
using a machine such as a rotary buffer, dual-action polisher or an orbital buffer for a number of different reasons. Here are a
few:

Depending on the procedure, machines are nearly twice as fast as your hands.
Machines are much less fatiguing to your hands, arms, and back.
Dual-action polishers and orbital buffers apply a thinner coat that’s easier to wipe off.
Dual-action polishers and orbital buffers spread polishes and waxes more evenly, for more uniform results.
Machines do a better job of cleaning deeper and removing surface defects and oxidation more thoroughly.
Machines are better at removing swirls.
Machines force more polishing oils into the surface, for deeper gloss and reflections.
Machines are more effective at removing serious defects than your hand.
Either of the two power buffers Meguiar’s offers mimic your hand motions and will give you an impressive finish without any
risk of burning your paint, even if you’ve never used a buffer before. It’s important to remember that while a rotary buffer can
do a lot of good, it can also be dangerous, potentially creating swirls, or burning through paint if not properly used. Using a
rotary buffer correctly requires skill, good technique, and experience. Don’t expect or even try to learn how to use a rotary
buffer on any vehicle that is important to you. Instead, find an old junker, or go to a wrecking yard and find the hood off a
junked car to learn and practice on.
What’s the difference between a dual-action polisher, orbital buffer and a rotary buffer?
Dual-action polishers and orbital buffers
The motors and drive units on these two types of polishers
oscillate in an eccentric circular motion. This type of
motion is much safer to the paint because it’s virtually
impossible to apply too much concentrated pressure in
one place at one time. Chances are good that when too
much pressure is applied, the oscillating action will come
to a stop thereby protecting the finish. Because these
types of machines oscillate instead of rotate, they will
not instill the dreaded buffer swirls or holograms into
your finish as long as you use the appropriate chemicals,
buffing pads and bonnets. This safety feature makes these
machines highly popular with enthusiasts who would
like to use a machine but at the same time, are afraid of
burning or inflicting swirls into their car’s finish. Both the
G220 and orbital buffers offer a number of benefits:

Uncomplicated – Remove from box, attach buffing pad or bonnet, plug in, turn on, start buffing
Versatile – Can be used for cleaning, polishing, and applying waxes.
Takes most of the labour out of the process, the machine does the work, all you do is hold it.
Faster, more thorough - you can cover more area and do a better job with a machine.
Creates a more uniform, higher gloss finish than your hands.
Pushes polishing oils and protective waxes into the pores and microscopic surface imperfections far better than your
hands can ever accomplish.
In recent years, the porter cable dual-action polisher (G220) has become the machine of choice over the older style orbital
buffers for a number of different reasons:

Smaller size and lighter weight makes them easier for anyone to use.

or skill to use correctly.

Rotary buffers
Rotary buffers are drastically different in the way they work
compared to dual-action polishers and orbital buffers. The
drive unit used in a rotary buffer is referred to as a direct
drive. What this means is the auger, (the threaded part
to which the backing plate attaches), is driven directly off the electric motor. This results in a powerful rotating motion. This
rotating motion is typically clockwise as you look at the rotary buffer from behind, as though you were using it on a panel.
Because the rotary buffer is a direct drive machine, it can do a lot of work very quickly. By work, we mean, the rotary buffer will
remove paint.
Meguiar’s understands the average person doesn’t want to remove precious paint from their car’s finish. However, sometimes
removing paint is necessary in order to create a high gloss, defect-free finish.
Example: If you have a scratch in your car’s finish, say someone keyed your car, or a cat jumped up on the hood and left behind
claw scratches. From a horizontal point of view, these scratches would look like this, In order to remove these scratches, you
will need to remove enough paint surrounding the scratches in order to make the surface level.
As you can see in this example, removing the scratches will require removing quite a bit of paint material, and in the case of
the deep key scratch (where the arrow is pointing), you will not be able to completely remove it without exposing the base, or
colour coat of paint. This is a situation where you are better off improving the scratch, not completely removing the scratch.
Second Example: Many cars, after being painted, are wet-sanded in order to remove orange peel or to bring the surface to
a showcar quality finish. After the finish has been sanded, the way you remove the sanding marks is to buff the finish with
a cutting compound and a rotary buffer. The cutting compound abrades the paint, removing, or leveling the finish until it’s
completely flat. After the surface is buffed flat, it will then be polished with a cleaner/polish like Meguiar’s M-83 Dual Action
Cleaner/Polish with the rotary buffer to restore a swirl-free, high gloss finish. Rotary buffers are necessary to do both of these
procedures because both of these procedures require that some portion of the paint is removed. Dual-action polishers
and orbital buffers do not have an aggressive enough action to remove small particles of paint in an effort to remove most
defects, including sanding marks. This is the same reason dual-action polishers and orbital buffers are safe… they don’t have
an aggressive action, thus they are safe. However, because they are safe (do not have an aggressive action), they are not
aggressive enough to remove all but the finest of scratches.
Do not purchase a dual action polisher or orbital buffer hoping to use these to remove major or even minor scratches, as
they are just not aggressive enough. They can often be used to remove fine or shallow scratches and swirls, but they will not
remove any scratch that is deep enough to place your fingernail into. Remember, using a rotary buffer successfully requires
both skill and experience. If you use a rotary buffer and are not skilled in its use, you can easily apply too much pressure to the
paint and burn right through it, requiring a new paint job. This same result can happen if you use a buffing pad attached to an
electric drill.

Will an orbital buffer work with your products?
Yes. Orbital buffers are designed to help you safely produce a better shine with less effort on your part. Orbital buffers, offer
the safe oscillating-action that Meguiar’s G220 Dual-Action Polisher uses, the primary difference being one of size and design.
Traditional orbital buffers are typically larger than the G220 and typically have two handles on opposite sides of the buffer
unit itself. There are smaller orbital buffers on the market, and some with different handle configurations, but in the end,
they all do the same thing and that’s use a random, oscillating motion to safely apply cleaners, polishes and protectants. The
benefit to using an orbital buffer is, generally speaking, they will produce better, more even results than the results you can
achieve only using your hands. The only drawback to the orbital buffer is sometimes their larger size can make it difficult to
work on small areas, like windshield posts, or tight spaces like the space under a rear deck wing. Since most orbital buffers
use a large 8” to 11” buffing pad, you tend to use more product because the pad itself will absorb a certain amount of your
product. Note: Meguiar’s more aggressive Paint Cleaners
and Compounds in the Professional Line should only be
applied with a rotary buffer by an experienced technician.
Meguiar’s G220 Dual Action Polisher.
Unlike traditional orbital buffers, the G220 uses a backing
plate, which utilizes a Velcro Quick Change system so that
you can quickly and easily switch from a polishing pad
like the W8006 to a final finishing pad like the W9006. The
smaller 6” size provides plenty of cleaning and polishing
action while using dramatically less product because of
the smaller size. The G220 is also lighter in weight making
it incredibly easy for just about anyone of any skill level to
use. Its smaller size allows it to be used on smaller areas
and in tighter space making it more versatile all around.
OTHER TIPS & TRICKS
•
NEVER use household detergents. They will strip away
wax protection and shorten the ‘life’ of your paint
finish.
•
Wash vehicle from the top down.
•
If possible, use 2 buckets. 1 for the wash solution and
1 for rinsing the mitt (to help remove loose debris).
•
Final rinse should be done with a stream of water, not
a spray
•
When using a wheel cleaner, be cautious of the
plaster center caps. A cleaner might effect them
differently than the rim. Remove caps if your uncertain.
•
ALWAYS spray wheel cleaners from the bottom up to help prevent staining.
•
For safety reasons, DO NOT apply dressings to steering wheel or foot pedals.
•
While applying vinyl/leather sprays apply product to towel then wipe surface, do not spray directly onto surface. If you
wish to apply product directly we recommend using the Dash Foam, Rich Leather Foam or our convenient wipes range.
•
Wipe your windows in one direction for the interior and the opposite for the exterior. This will allow you to determine
where your streaks are.
•
Use the 2 sided or 2 towel method. One side of towel for the initial wipe and the other to produce the perfect streak free
final wipe. The Microwipe Glass and Window cloth is perfect for achieving streak-free results.
