If you have questions,
Tena Koutou,
On Tuesday 14th June, Madelein Breedt and I attended the
inaugural Marlborough Youth in Emergency Services Graduation at
Giesen Wines, Rapaura Road, Blenheim. We had two students from
our school graduating – Anja Dunlop and Olivia Partridge. Olivia’s
mum and dad, Dave and Mandy, were also present.
The two girls attended a twice a week course, out of school hours,
that required the generosity of their parents in taking them into
Blenheim (and further afield on some occasions). The ten week
course encompassed activities donated and provided by Civil
Defense, St Johns, Fire Brigade, Surf Life Saving, Bluebridge Coast
Guard, Marlborough Search and Rescue, Marlborough Helicopter
Trust, and the Marlborough Police.
The girls thoroughly enjoyed the experiences they undertook,
learning so many life skills along the way and feeling confident in
knowing that they could save lives in times of emergencies. The
mayor, Mr Alistair Sowman was in attendance. In his congratulatory
speech he commended the 15 graduates in their achievement and
highlighted their community citizenship and worth. A huge honour
for such young, yet responsible teenagers.
I don’t subscribe to Facebook (just not my thing) but someone brought to my
attention recently the following article from Northland College principal John Tapene
who forwarded the following words from a judge who regularly deals with youth.
“Always we hear the cry from teenagers, ‘what can we do, where can we go?’
“My answer is this: Go home, mow the lawn, wash the windows, learn to cook, build
a raft, study your lessons and after you have finished, read a book. Your town does
not owe you recreational facilities and your parents do not owe you fun.
“The world does not owe you a living, you owe the world something.. You owe it
your time, energy and talent, so that no one will be at war, in sickness and lonely
again. In other words grow up, stop being a cry baby, get out of your dream world
and develop a backbone not a wishbone. Start behaving like a responsible person.
You are important and you are needed. It’s too late to sit around and wait for
somebody to do something someday. Someday is now and that someone is you!”
A Facebook posting 100.9 KXOJ
I challenged our senior students with this article some weeks ago at assembly. This
article does not reflect their lifestyles. Like Anja and Olivia, virtually all of them
frequently engage in one (or more) of the following - have after school employment,
positive recreational activities, play sport, hunt, fish, help within the home, complete
their homework and read books. Our students do have backbones. They are playing
their part. Our community is in good hands.

Secondary School News
The term is nearly over and our students are very focused on achieving their credits!
It is great to see many parents and caregivers’ supporting their children by ensuring
home learning is completed every day and ensuring their children are well prepared
for learning with pens, books, PE gear and their diary. We have found students
completing study at home are ready for the next day’s lesson and are achieving at a
higher standard.
Fundraising – Rugby Game
Thank you the secondary students and teachers who assisted with a food stall at the
Nelson U10’s rugby game on the 18th June. Several hundred dollars was raised and
we still have another sausage sizzle to hold next week.
Well done to Bryce for winning ‘Forward of the Game’ and to Anton for winning
‘Back of the Game’.

Congratulations to Denva for achieving 40+ credits in NCEA Level 1, and to Taj,

2016, these students are well on their way to successfully achieving their academic
goals.

confirm your preferred time slots. Teachers will endeavour to meet your documented
times. For further details please contact Mrs Breedt, email [email protected] .

Mrs Richmond has organised Gateway placements and some students are starting
their placements this week. It is an exciting time to learning outside the classroom
and we thank employers who have accepted our students with open arms. Placements
include working on local dairy farms, to working with a local builder. Students
interested in Gateway please see Mrs Richmond.

to school. If your child requires a RVAS polar fleece jersey, please contact Heather
(571 6016) to arrange purchase and payment options.
