Preserving a part of the Past
Woody & Ada Widness -Salem,
Oregon
. Close to 42 years, normal ups and downs.
Two girls, Michelle and her significant
other, between them they have 9 children.
Michelle with 4, Kevin with 3, and they are
the proud parents of twins. Marci-Jo and
Tommy have Mikayla and have adopted,
now 3 years old, Jazmyn. I retired in 2001
after 36 years with Western Electric,
AT&T, Lucent and they are now one of
those French companies, Lucent-Alcatel.
Ada, for the first 15 years or so. Was a stay
at home mom except for working in a day
care center, which saved us, as the kids went
with mom until they started school. She was
always a kid person, now working for the
State of Oregon. All these years we were
always playing with some old cars. 50 Chev
5 window, 53 Chev sedan, 64 Chev Impala
Conv. Always something. Then came
retirement time. By then we had no old cars.
So of course we had to find one. Along
came “Lucy”, 1955 Chev Bel Air Sedan.
That was early in 2001.
1955 Chevy BelAir Sedan
Then about Sept we went to Arizona and
purchased a 1955 Chev Pickup. Great
experience driving that truck home. Stopped
over in Tonopah, Nevada the first night out
of Phoenix. The second night was Sept 10
2001 and we stopped in Medford. Got up
the next morning and watched a terrible
thing happen on TV. The towers in New
York, the Pentagon, in DC and a field in
Pennsylvania. I wont forget that morning.
I also felt that I needed a 72 Chevy pickup.
1972 Chevy Pickup short box
1955 Chevy station wagon!
Found one on e-bay and since it was in West
Linn and I could check it out, we went over
to West Linn, fell for the Yellow Truck
(“Grumpy”) and purchased same. Then we
needed a Classic for Ada to drive to
work(on nice days). One of our club
members had a wagon for sale so we
decided to purchase her (“Kalani”). Yes
they all have names and are part of the
family. We had joined a car club. Obsolete
Fleet Chevys in Salem Oregon, early 2001,
shortly after the purchase of “Lucy”. The
founder of Obsolete Fleet Chevys and soon
to be good friend was Jerry, also the guy
who guided us into the Vintage Trailer
World and Rollin‘ Oldies Vintage trailer
group. We enjoyed going to car shows with
Jerry, Linda and other members of “The
Fleet”. Still going’ on except now we have
included trailer rallies/camping back into
our lives. Our first trailer was a 1968
Aristocrat. We purchased her in Sweet
Home and thought we had made a real sweet
deal. There were two stains in the panels so
didn’t think it would take much to fix her
up. Then I made the mistake of opening her
up. The fun began!! The front corner wasn’t
too bad, but there was suspect wood. I
probably didn’t need to put in new stuff, but
I did! Then I thought that since the little
spot in the front wasn’t too bad I would
open the corner by the toilet. Wow, what a
find I made. The whole corner of the trailer
fell on the ground when I opened the siding.
Rotted wood just crumbled. Since then, the
trailer has been all put back together and
used the last couple years. Not a bad little
trailer, but we wanted something older n’
bigger.
At Riverbed a couple years back you all
may remember the 1954 Anderson, that
Justin and Anna brought over from “Flyte
Camp”. Needless to say we fell in love with
their work and decided we wanted
something like that. We talked to Justin and
Anna about doing something for us. We
gave them a wish list, decided on a so
called budget and the hunt was on. We
looked at Airstreams, Boles, etc. Then in
internet sites, Craig list, Tim Can Tourists
and many more. Justin came up with a few
suggestions, we talked about them, then
after some time Justin calls and tells us he
had a 47’ Westwood. The build was on.
Then the Travel Channel wanted to film
them restoring a trailer. Ours just happened
to be the one they were working on at the
time. So the trips to Bend to be included and
watch what was happening, were on. Was a
real experience and a lot of interesting fun.
Of course our fine Oregon weather kicked in
and the Coach has been stored in Bend,
waiting for better weather. Finally on April
9th was her day to come home. So
“Paradise” came over the hill.
Paradise- reborn!
Check out the sweet birch interior,
dripping with honey!
Thank You Woody & Ada for sharing your
story with us! As a lot of you know Woody &
Ada have attended all ROVT rallies and we
became friends with them through a local car
club. From classic cars to vintage trailers,
sound familiar?
Please email me [email protected] a brief story
about yourself and your trailer, I would be
happy to email you a “outline” for our new
“Feature Member” section in our newsletter!
I will turn it into a feature story context and
also pass it along to Diana to publish on our
web site. I thank you in advance! Jerry
2012 River Bend Rally Update
Paradise waiting to be “reborn”
Her colors are a match to the 55 Chevy
Wagon. We hope that some day, “Kalani”
will be able to tow “Paradise”. For now she
will follow the Chevy Pickup to her
destinations. First trip will be to McIver,
Riverbend n’ more!!
Friends and fellow vintage trailer enthusiasts!
Get ready for some fun filled rallies hosted by
rovt member wagon masters at McIver State Park
in May, River Bend County Park in June, South
Beach State Park on the Oregon coast in
September, Culver KOA in Central Oregon in
October, we have the state covered! See our web
page rovt.org for dates in 2012!
Rovt is proud to host our annual River Bend
Rally June 22-23-24, 2012 , again for your
enjoyment. In case you are new to rovt and have
not attended any rovt rallies, your in for a treat!
Our River Bend rally has been the main
structured rally with meetings, entertainment,
group interaction , tech sessions plus much more!
This year at River Bend we are asking that
instead of rock markers, as used in 2011, bring a
hub cap, (car-trailer) authentic or home made! It
must have your Name, trailer name, town-state
your from on the cap, (this is a option, but most
participate) placed near the entrance of your
campsite driveway! Questions? Contact me!
Our swap meet this year will be a progressive
swap meet, you can set up your parts or items
during the duration of the event at YOUR
campsite, we will not be using the large open
shelter this year.
We are working on setting up a tech question
and answer session for our participants on
Saturday in the open shelter., several of our
members who have an abundance of knowledge
in restoration, trailer facts, originality, will be
available to answer questions.
We have secured the services of Dick & June
Marie Bell, creators of “The Dump station
Revue“ comedy & Music to entertain us! This
should be a “hoot” of a time!
Our annual pot luck will be held Saturday
evening for all to attend, more on this in later
updates. A informal bicycle show & shine, trailer
open house, tea social, plus much more!
We will be hosting our annual “silent auction”
again, items are collected both by staff (we do
accept donations from participants), to be bid
upon during the event. Highest bidder takes the
item home.
Again this year you will be able to bid on spot to
be first in line at the pot luck, a fun filled option.
The money collected from the silent auction is
put into a special rovt account, funds are then
distributed to each rally wagon master to offset
rally expenses for their particular rally during the
year.
Note: Again we will be offering all participants
the chance to register for our June 2013 River
Bend Rally and keep your site you had in 2012.
This option will only be available during the
rally weekend. You must pay in advance ,(we
prefer check or MO), rates for our 2013 rally will
actually decrease a few dollars due to the
registration fee being reduced from $20 to $15,
the silent auction receipts have been good. We
are trying to make the rally affordable as well as
fun, plus the great camping experience many are
having with extending their stay.
If you should decide to extend your stay
beyond or before the rally, please contact Linn
County @ (541) 967-3917 9am-4pm weekdays
only. Tell Karri you are with the rovt rally, have
your assigned site number information ready.
You should get our discounted site fee for the
extra days with NO additional cancellation fees.
Signs, we will also be giving each registered
participant a small sign to hang on their door
during the three day rally and open house. This
sign is telling others if your trailer is “open” or
“closed” for viewing. Only one sign per campsite
will be issued.
We may also ask several participants in the
group “G” area to act as hosts for a short
“vintage bicycle” show & shine to be held
Saturday. Your involvement and help in the rally
is appreciated by all.
Because our theme this year is a “Happy
Day’s” , we will have several back drops at the
registration shelter for picture taking. Dust off
those tea cups and get those vintage clothes out
for our annual tea social to be held again this
year.
We are also working on securing our ‘57
Chevy golf cart to be used as a shuttle during
the rally, now that is service! Free bottles of
water, pastry will be available again this year
along with a few other tasty items on Saturday!
A few changes this year, we will have set
hours for staff to be available at the registration
table on Friday and Saturday morning. We will
open the enclosed shelter at 8am and close at
9pm Friday. Saturday I am still working on the
registration hours do to so many events going on
during the day. More about this later.
Because River Bend is so spread out, we
encourage you to bring your bike, good exercise
and show off that vintage bike! For those of you
physically challenged ,we will have our golf cart
“scooting” around the campgrounds for you to
secure rids. We will designate areas for pickup
of customers. With 70 sites reserved, we will
have a lot of foot traffic, please be aware that
dogs MUST be on leashes at all times, unless in
your vehicle or in a fenced compound!
That’s a general summary of what is going at our
rally in June! I will be sending out updates once a
month with more information and any changes.
Please review our group policy for attending
rallies and more info by going to our web site
rovt.org
A few of you are on my “wait” list to move
from a non-hookup site to a w/e site, at this time
I have not had any cancellations of w/e sites, I
am sure that will change as the rally time gets
closer.
Note:
The car show in Sweet Home
has been moved to June 30th.

Remember, only You can save
a vintage trailer from becoming
a utility trailer!
The building of a Vintage Trailer
To my friends and family; It has been
suggested that I keep some of you
informed with photos and text, as to my
progress in the construction of my latest
trailer. While not as fancy as the CADT
it is by far the largest trailer I have built.
This trailer is being built from the
ground up.
This trailer is my own design of the
1940s AIRFLOAT trailer and I call it an
AIRFLOE. It is 8 X 28 with a trolley top.
AIRFLOAT never used a trolley top.
Other than that it will have the vintage
look, but will be modern in every
respect. The shape is radically curved
front and rear and will have porthole
windows on the sides like the original
AIRFOLAT.
If you wish to check them out, I have
included some photos of the frame. You
will note that I have used two axles
instead of one. The original AIRFLOAT
always used only one; I did this to
increase the tow ability. I have the
tongue and the sunken entryway to go
and also install the holding tanks, then I
can move it into the shop.
Enjoy, Larry Boehme
Thanks Larry for sharing your project.
We will await more pictures and
progress on the building of your
AIRFLOE .
Awning for Sale
I have an awning for a 72 boles aero non
Parell.
Would like $150 or best offer, I have a
picture on Face book of the awning!

Sunday is a time to socialize with
friends and begin the process of leaving
the park. We will also be accepting silent
auction items; this helps us maintain a
treasury for ROVT to pay some of the
expenses for our three additional rallies
planned for the year and also buy silent
auction items. We appreciate the help!
