PEAK Brochure 2010
I n the sixth year of our annual Print Excellence And Knowledge Awards, entries continued to surprise judges with their sophistication and creativity. This year, the contest attracted more than 236 entries from around the world, encompassing everything from a rock ‘n’ roll diary to a 3D treasure hunt campaign for a national retailer. A beautiful printing job was just the first hurdle for these 42 Grand Award winners, who won recognition through smart solutions that solved real end user problems. PEAK winners meet customers’ needs through creativity in design, production, fulfillment and other services. presented by M A G A Z I N E 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER Affixed Products The Flesh Company, St. Louis, TFC Auto Form The Flesh Company met an end user’s requirements by creating a unique film material which could be applied directly to a laser form. The material could be easily removed without leaving residue or pulling fibers from the laser sheet. The form was laser compatible, and the material was a white, flexible vinyl with a low-tack adhesive, printed with water-based inks and a laser-printable topcoat. “All the other entries had a residue on the back,” one judge said. “This company took it one step further by creating a product without the residue.” Award of Excellence Printgraphics Inc., Vandalia, Ohio, Chrysler Warranty Card GRAND WINNER Barcoded Products Gill Studios Inc., Shawnee Mission, Kan. A Box Life Campaign Columbia Sportswear launched an eco-friendly initiative called A Box Life, allowing customers to track online the location of used boxes carrying their shipped merchandise. Gill Studios supplied a digitally printed label on white laser paper with 2D barcodes that gave customers two options for tracking the progress of the box. Within just a month after launch, 66% of Columbia’s customers were participating in the used box program. “It’s a fun idea to see what places the boxes have been,” one judge said. “The printing was well done, and the boxes are re-usable and have a very long shelf life.” Award of Excellence The Flesh Company, St. Louis, TFC Garden Rewards Form GRAND WINNER Best Distributor Kit Admore, a division of Ennis Inc., Macomb, Mich. Admore Sales Kit Admore created a sales kit to showcase a variety of product sizes, available graphics, stock selections and target markets for its presentation products. PMS and 4-color process printing, flood and spot coatings, standard and custom die cutting, foil stamping and embossing were featured. A fullcolor retail catalog, net price guide, order form and artwork submission guidelines were included in the kit. “This was well thought out,” one judge said. “The spot UV and embossment were nice touches, and the branding was very effective.” Award of Excellence Business Stationery LLC, Cleveland, Ohio, BSI Distributor Kit 2 2010 PEAK AWARDS 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER Binders, Complex Napco Inc., Sparta, N.C. Surfaces Flooring Material Sample Folder The judges were wowed with Napco’s large-format binder of sample material for Surfaces. The end user wanted a binder that could hold all of its product lines and color selections. Napco created panels that folded side-to-side and top-to-bottom to ensure it held all samples. The binder was wrapped and linked on all panels with 4-color printed litho paper; the binder and all panels were finished with gloss film lamination for extra durability. The flip-up panels were also made of 100% recycled paper fibers. “This is ultra durable,” one judge said. “A lot of hard work went into this.” GRAND WINNER Binders, Simple Napco Inc., Sparta, N.C., Vitamix Easel Binder Cookbook Judges were impressed with the easel binder cookbook Napco created for Vitamix. The cover wrap was made with 4-color printed litho paper and finished with a gloss film lamination. The cookbook was easy to clean, and the binder was produced with a chip paperboard base made from 100% recycled paper fibers. The interior pivoting metal ring attachment and horizontal crease allowed the binder to bend and stand up like an easel while cooking. “The added crease was a nice touch,” one judge said. Binders/Folders, Kit (No Grand Award in this category) Award of Excellence Independent Printing Company Inc., DePere, Wis., Meridian Health Admissions Kit GRAND WINNER Binders/Folders, Presentation Admore, a division of Ennis Inc., Macomb, Mich. Cup of Inspiration Folder Judges were impressed with the consistent coffee theme of Admore’s folder designed to showcase Neenah’s Espresso Texture Stock. The folder included custom die cuts to hold a wooden coffee stir stick and special offer coupons on the inside pocket. The coupon itself was custom die cut in the shape of a take-out coffee cup. The piece was mailed in an envelope with an image of an actual coffee-stained napkin with design notes. Award of Excellence Conformer Products Inc., Great Neck, N.Y., Kellogg School of Management Presentation Folder Napco Inc., Sparta, N.C., America the Beautiful Quarter Map Folder 3 2010 PEAK AWARDS 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER Commercial Printing, 4C+, Multi-Component (Two Grand Awards) Documedia, Altadena, Calif. Oscars’ Governors Ball Keepsake Box The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences wanted a unique keepsake gift for attendees of the Oscars’ after party, The Governors Ball. The Academy’s director of education programs and special events and design firm KCD came up with the idea of creating a box and card set. The cards displayed a scene from every picture in all categories nominated for the 2008 Academy Awards. Aqueous coating was applied to all pieces. “This solution deserves an Oscar,” one judge said. GRAND WINNER Independent Printing Company Inc., DePere, Wis. Cochlear Alliance Kit The Cochlear Resource Center needed a 5-piece kit including materials for doctors to educate patients on Cochlear’s hearing aid technology. The materials had to withstand the wear and tear of everyday use. The 24pt. White Tango material provided a sturdy structure, and gloss lamination added a sheen to protect the kit against moisture and scuffing. “This was a very good use of color,” one judge added. Another said, “This is in fantastic condition. It held up very well, no cracks or bends.” Cochlear has since ordered several other projects through Independent Printing. Award of Excellence Dynamic Print Group, Menasha, Wis., Sargento Promotion Folder Adams McClure, a division of Ennis Inc., Denver, Spartacus Masks RBO Print Logistix, Maryland Heights, Mo., ’Zou Zone Promotional Campaign SureWay Marketing Services, Princeton, N.J., Positively Pink Campaign Wright Business Graphics, Portland, Ore., Spa Promotional Package GRAND WINNER Commercial Printing, 4C+, Single Sheet Dynamic Print Group, Menasha, Wis., Leibold Calendar Dynamic’s Liebold & Associates Design Firm calendar promotion was printed on uncoated Classic Crest Cover, die cut and perforated with tight tolerances. Award of Excellence Graphic Litho, Lawrence, Mass., Schweppes Large Format Poster 4 2010 PEAK AWARDS 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER Commercial Printing, Booklets Wright Business Graphics, Portland, Ore. Frontier Financial Booklet Frontier Financial Credit Union wanted a consolidated new account brochure which contained all of its primary products and discussed the core benefits of credit union membership. The piece also had to include a pocket to insert new membership documents. This solution became known as the waterfall brochure due to the staggered design and fluid crossovers. This piece replaced eight other brochures as well as a new accounts folder. It remains the cornerstone of new accounts marketing at Frontier Financial and also is offered in Spanish. Award of Excellence cmfi Group, Peoria, Ill., WIC Flip Chart Dupli-Systems, Strongsville, Ohio, Ohio State Senate Booklet Dynamic Print Group, Menasha, Wis., Wyndemere Calendar GRAND WINNER Commercial Printing, Books Dynamic Print Group, Menasha, Wis. Ernst & Young Paperboard Portfolios Ernst & Young needed a high-quality portfolio that could accommodate up to 1” of material for its prestigious “Entrepreneur of the Year” awards. Conformer created a custom 11¼ x 13¼” portfolio made from FSCcertified paperboard with a Velcro closure. The portfolio was designed to start flat and fit up to 1¼” of material. Because the portfolio was packaged flat in 100-count cartons, Ernst & Young also saved on freight costs to ship the portfolios to its awards ceremony. “This company was brave with this design,” one judge added. “It’s impressive that the folds didn’t crack. The die cutting was great, and overall this was very functional.” Award of Excellence Team Concept, Carol Stream, Ill. Loyola University Business Cards 5 2010 PEAK AWARDS GRAND WINNER 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER Commercial Printing, Kits RBO Print Logistix, Maryland Heights, Mo. Build-A-Bear Kit When Build-A-Bear Workshops needed help sourcing three separate components of its promotional kit in a tight timeframe, RBO rose to the challenge. The company printed a 3D map, 3D glasses and a carrying case for the client, assembled the kits and distributed them to Build-A-Bear warehouses throughout the country. Build-A-Bear ordered more kits before the promotion even began and received positive feedback since the promotion’s launch. “This was very light-hearted and fun for kids,” the judges agreed. Award of Excellence Team Concept, Carol Stream, Ill., Hadley Notecards GRAND WINNER Commercial Printing, Magazines Documation, Eau Claire, Wis. America’s Association Printer Magazine When Documation transformed its newsletter into a full-fledged, fullcolor magazine in 2006, the company devoted the publication to using unique designs, colors, pictures and paper to highlight its services. And, it did just that with its special wine issue. The cover was based on a wine theme, and Documation interviewed a local winery for the “Just for Fun” article. The magazine was printed entirely on FSC-certified paper. “The colors in this magazine are very sharp,” one judge said. “And, the binding was amazing.” GRAND WINNER Digital Printing, Short Run Gill Studios Inc., Shawnee Mission, Kan. “Kung Fu Panda” Poster Gill Studios produced this 37½ x 26¼” large format piece to promote the movie “Kung Fu Panda.” A removable adhesive made it easy to remove the poster once the promotion was over. The anti-slip, laminated vinyl ensured safety, while the textured, non-glare pattern enhanced the integrity of the blacks and reds. “The color used was very nice,” one judge said. 6 2010 PEAK AWARDS 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER Digital Printing, VDP B2B Proforma InPrint, Newburyport, Mass. Personalized Insurance Policy Forms Booklet Proforma redesigned policies and renewals for Amwins Insurance from single sheets inserted into a presentation folder to a booklet format. Variable data and internal perforations allowed the forms to be filled out and easily removed to mail back to the company. A return envelope was inserted into the booklet. With this solution, Proforma was able to reduce the postage to mail these policies and renewals by 52 cents and reduce error rates from 35 to just 2%. Award of Excellence Classic Forms and Products, Beaumont, Texas, Credit Union Skip a Pay Program Digital Printing, VDP B2C GRAND WINNER MPX, Portland, Maine Atlantic Funds Transpromo Piece Atlantic Funds Administration needed a system to streamline inventory management of its 18 different funds, which included 1,000 daily confirmations and 20,000 printed monthly statements. MPX recreated Atlantic’s statements to a full, 4-color VDP and transpromo piece for funds of all sizes. “We’re seeing more and more of this from distributors,” one judge said. MPX also incorporated an on-demand printed system, which eliminated stock mix-ups and excessive inventory, and added a 2D barcode to increase the inserting accuracy of each statement. Under the previous vendor, it took anywhere from two to three months for new funds to be set up in the system. With MPX’s solution, a new fund could be set up in just 72 hours. Award of Excellence Team Concept, Carol Stream, Ill., Cosi Table Cards GRAND WINNER Direct Mail, Lead or Acquisition (Two Grand Awards) Curtis 1000, Duluth, Ga. Strategic Account Puzzle Campaign In May 2009, Curtis 1000 began marketing directly to strategic account prospects. Multiple 1-to-1, personalized pieces were mailed to targeted prospects over a 5-month period, while sales consultants made calls to secure appointments. Seven separate pieces went into this campaign: a folded, personalized mailer; a puzzle box; a lenticular postcard; a 6x9” envelope with postcard and letter; an email; a pURL; and a brochure. “This was a great solution to adopt,” one judge said. 7 2010 PEAK AWARDS 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER Direct Mail, Lead or Acquisition, IGH Solutions, Inver Grove Heights, Minn., 3D Entertainment Campaign The goal of this campaign was to showcase the power and effectiveness of 3D and lenticular to 1,500 top Hollywood studio executives and creative professionals through direct mailings. This 5-month direct marketing campaign consisted of three 11x14” 3D lenticular posters, a lenticular brochure and a 3D postcard. Award of Excellence Colortree, Richmond, Va., Credit Union Transformailer GRAND WINNER Direct Mail, Loyalty Specialty Print Communications, Niles, Ill. Office Max Max Perks Card Office Max wanted to make its direct mail loyalty program greener by converting its conventional plastic cards to paper, without losing perceived value. Specialty Print Communications introduced the trademarked TracKard. The piece was printed, glued, die cut and imaged with barcodes and priority codes to track response. “This is not your traditional envelope,” one judge said. “It’s very nicely done.” The response rate of the paper card was no different than the plastic, and this process reduced the time to market more than 80%, which enabled Office Max to respond to real time market data. Award of Excellence Diverse Printing & Graphics Inc., New York, Overstock Jeweler Direct Mail Piece GRAND WINNER Document Security ProDocumentSolutions, Paso Robles, Calif. Clark County Nevada Marriage Certificates ProDocumentSolutions produced this certificate abstract of marriage for Clark County, Nevada. The document was printed on controlled true watermark security paper with an engraved border. It incorporated a highly-controlled holographic security foil stamp, dual combination embossed/debossed image of the county’s seal and a hidden message using thermochromic inks for field authentication. This solution provided a document layered with eight security features, both covert and overt with field and forensic verification, and prevented fraud. 8 2010 PEAK AWARDS 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER E-Commerce Demand Bridge LLC, Norcross, Ga. Corporate Budgeting Automation A national life, property and auto insurance provider wanted to provide co-op dollars for its agents to spend online but didn’t have the resources to maintain accounts. Demand Bridge provided a web-based solution that enabled the customer to run its credit dollars program and have more flexibility for future demands. Each site had multiple spending accounts, accounts could be granted or revoked based upon the user, and restrictions could be put in place to control which items were available. Regional managers saved hours that were previously spent administering the program. Tracking this spending helped the customer regulate inventory, eliminate waste and reduce costs. “This was a great workflow solution that holds users accountable for their actions and eliminates waste,” one judge said. Award of Excellence Specialty Print Communications, Niles, Ill., TruGreen TruLoyalty Program GRAND WINNER Folders, Simple Admore, a division of Ennis Inc., Macomb, Mich., “What do you feel?” Folder Admore created this folder to showcase Soft-Touch Coating to customers, with possible applications and how to best use its treatment on marketing and sales materials. Four-color process printing was used, with Soft-Touch aqueous coating and clear foil stamping. A close-up image of a blooming rose bud was used to connect the paper texture with the soft, velvety feel of something tangible. Forms GRAND WINNER ProDocumentSolutions, Paso Robles, Calif. L.A. Unified School District Meal Tickets The L.A. Unified School District wanted to secure a manufacturer capable of handling its large volume of complex vouchers within a short timeframe. ProDocumentSolutions offered a solution that allowed schools to administer a secure food reimbursement program for a large number of students, including serialized daily food vouchers. ProDocumentSolutions created a contract with documents ranging from nine to 11 parts, with a two-part NCR top form glued to an inner monthly calendar sheet. The company used a magnetic die cut cylinder with UV curable inks to increase quality and run speeds. This solution provided a 10% reduction in labor costs and increased the quality of registration and consistency of each perforation. Award of Excellence The Flesh Company, St. Louis, Membership Contribution Card Wright Business Graphics, Portland, Ore., Oregon Lottery Form 9 2010 PEAK AWARDS 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER Green Solution, Product Wynalda Litho, Belmont, Mich. “Weeds” Season Four DVD Package Wynalda Litho produced a 3-disc DVD package that was both attractive on the shelf and environmentally friendly for season four of Showtime’s hit “Weeds.” The company created the DVD trays, a single disc and a double disc version using recycled water bottles. Recycled paperboard was used for the tray carrier. This allowed Lionsgate entertainment studio to reduce its overall impact on the environment, while offering an eye-catching DVD package. Award of Excellence Gill Studios Inc., Shawnee Mission, Kan., A Box Life Campaign GRAND WINNER Green Solution, Self Promotion E-Bisprint Pty Limited, Tuggerah, Australia, NSW Elation Products Promotional Campaign E-Bisprint wanted to provide its customers with practical promotional products information that matched the green theme of the company’s Elation brand, a line of environmentally-friendly envelopes. The solution provided an informative brochure, branded packaging, presentation folders, leave-behind coasters, desk pads, brown paper carrying bags, envelopes and eucalyptus-scented air fresheners to reinforce the fact that the envelopes are manufactured from farmed eucalyptus. “This company really went above and beyond on this solution,” one judge said. “This product proves the company can print on anything.” Award of Excellence Independent Printing Company, DePere, Wis., Frosted Folders GRAND WINNER Innovation (Two Grand Awards) Independent Printing Company, DePere, Wis. Flash Drive Holders Independent Printing wanted to introduce a unique way to package a popular promotional product—the USB flash drive. With flash drives being an economical solution for digital media storage, Independent Printing created a holder specifically designed to protect the drive. The multi-panel folding configuration maximized the area for graphics, logos and imagery printable on the holder, while the 2” pouch houses the flash drives. “This definitely solved a problem,” one judge added. 10 2010 PEAK AWARDS 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER Innovation Promo Print Solutions Inc., Oshkosh, Wis. Bridgestone Blizzak In-Store Promotion Bridgestone Firestone wanted a new graphic effect to help grab customers’ attention, so Promo Print Solutions offered two printed pieces used for in-store promotions—a poster and a tire insert. The poster was printed on both a text weight paper and a board weight paper. The tire insert fits into Bridgestone Firestone tires. Holographic UV coating was applied to the design, with more than 20 patterns available that can be applied as an overall or spot coating. The added effect of the snowflake areas created shine and encouraged a second look at the graphic and the Bridgestone product. Award of Excellence Dynamic Print Group, Menasha, Wis., Maurices Gift Card Holder Integrated Products GRAND WINNER Wright Business Graphics, Portland, Ore. New York City Marathon Marker & Redemption Label Nike hosted a function for the NYC Marathon and needed a printed label that mimicked a running bib on which marathon participants could write the name of the person to whom they dedicated their run. The label then could be peeled off and stuck to the wall in Nike Town, while a message displayed underneath the peeled label revealed five grand prize winners or directed others to a specific store location for a smaller prize. Wright Business Graphics produced a two-part pressure seal look-a-like with a 2color face, then applied the label liner and message. Both plies were collated together and cross-web glued with two horizontal perforations that allowed the runner to write on ply one, separate the form like a pressure seal, read the message on ply two through the liner and stick ply one on the wall. In just 36 hours, 15,000 were printed and shipped overnight to New York. Award of Excellence FormSystems Inc., Pensacola, Fla., USA Children’s and Women’s Outpatient Form Labels & Tags, Prime (Two Grand Awards) Western States Envelope & Label, Butler, Wis. Alterra Coffee Label Alterra Coffee Labels approached Western States Envelope & Label looking for a quick, 48-hour turnaround for a unique series of organic coffee blend labels that would capture the look of several coffee-producing countries. The labels were printed on gloss over-laminate stock. The customer could print barcodes and imbed important information as needed on each label. The flexo ink used ranged from three to five spot colors and helped carry the label’s theme. 11 2010 PEAK AWARDS GRAND WINNER 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER Labels & Tags, Prime Western States Envelope & Label, Butler, Wis. Bean Greens Vet Treats Label Bean Greens needed two labels for the front and back of veterinarianapproved animal treats within a short time for an upcoming trade show. A rush order was placed and an economical solution was used. The front and back of the package required a round corner, rectangular, die cut label printed in four colors. “It was very smart of this company to use a generic bag then apply a custom-made label to it,” one judge added. Award of Excellence Labels West, Woodinville, Wash., Patterson Cellars Label Overnight Labels Inc., Deer Park, N.Y., Solgar Vitamin Rebrand Label Western States Envelope & Label, Butler, Wis., Excelsior Springs Water Bottle Label GRAND WINNER Labels & Tags, Workflow (Two Grand Awards) Trebnick Systems, Springboro, Ohio, Warning Label This warning label was created for AHRI, a company that sells heating and cooling systems. The team at Trebnick Systems improved the original warning labels by going from 8- to 6-color and using a different font, making the labels easier to read. The company also combined two separate warning labels on one perforated form. This allowed the end user to have all labels on one form to use for production. Trebnick also printed the new labels on a less expensive, more environmentally-friendly material. Trebnick saved AHRI money by printing with less color, less expensive material and on one form, but still produced a better overall product. “This was a great solution,” one judge said. “Several labels were consolidated on one sheet, so it allowed the customer to visit one source and pull different labels as needed.” GRAND WINNER Labels & Tags, Workflow Whitlam Label Company, Center Line, Mich. Patient Laserband A customer requested a band/tracking system to track patients during natural disasters. The customer also wanted a consecutive number barcode label that could be removed and used for patient forms samples, as well as a band for quick identification of patient status in triage. Whitlam created a solution made of film to withstand the rigors of disaster environments. It incorporated variable data for tracking and traceability. Whitlam integrated the customer’s requirements into one band with six removable barcodes that could be used for patient forms or samples as needed. Colorcoding allowed for visibility of patients’ statuses in triage. “Someone did a very good job thinking all of this through,” one judge said. 12 2010 PEAK AWARDS 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER Mailers Gill Studios Inc., Shawnee Mission, Kan. Casino Royale Card Gill Studios produced a unique lenticular mailing piece for the American Red Cross and its 10th Annual Red Cross Gala. Gill created a gradient background for the moving pieces. The line of movement was shortened while optimizing the lenticular illusion of motion for the dice. A 75 lpi lens on Universal Clear Lenticular polyester was selected, using full-color offset printing. The back of the card also was imprinted with the event’s details. The result was an animated postcard with a colorful, eye-catching design. “This was definitely a fun piece, especially the dice,” one judge said. Award of Excellence Wright Business Graphics, Portland, Ore., WBG Promo Mailer Money Maker GRAND WINNER cmfi Group, Peoria, Ill. Redbrand Credit Union Marketing Campaign Redbrand Credit Union’s goal was to increase loan volume and services per member. cmfi Group suggested Redbrand partner with another cmfi client, Steak ‘n Shake. The company agreed to donate food vouchers for the campaign. A ’50s theme was created using vintage photos. Posters, vouchers, web banners and postcards were produced, which highlighted Redbrand’s services and offered clients vouchers and other prizes if they “cruised” into Redbrand to add new services. The campaign was well received, and Redbrand was able to spread the word about its services while keeping costs low and showing customer appreciation. Packaging Wynalda Litho, Belmont, Mich. “Wallace & Gromit” DVD Package Wynalda Litho produced this “Wallace & Gromit” DVD package using three different substrates. The first element was a basic DVD O sleeve printed with 4-color graphics. The second was a thermo-form printed with 4-color graphics on polystyrene, which was thermo-formed to create the shape and depth of characters and tipped on the front of the O sleeve so characters appeared to pop out of the sleeve. The third element was a curved O sleeve manufactured on PVC, which bows on the front to enhance the 3D appearance of the characters. “The polish was very nice,” one judge added. “This company knows how to sell to kids.” Award of Excellence Fox Valley Technical College, Appleton, Wis., Merry Christmas Box McDowell Label & Screen Printing, Plano, Texas, D3 Bronzer Shrink Sleeve Napco Inc., Sparta, N.C., Volvo VIP box, Fleming Wine Glass Gift Box Set Wynalda Litho, Belmont, Mich., “Snow White” Blu-ray O Sleeve 13 2010 PEAK AWARDS GRAND WINNER 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER Plastic Cards Ward/Kraft, Fort Scott, Kan. The product was made of 10 mil. teslin core with 10 mil. gloss laminate face and back. The table talkers were scored to fold and stand upright. The products could be shipped flat and laid flat after use for storage. “This was well thought out,” the judges agreed. GRAND WINNER Promotional Products Pilgrim Plastics, Brockton, Mass. Catalog Promotional Card Deck Pilgrim Plastics provided this unique mailing for preferred customers of catalog marketer Spiegel Co. A 20-page custom card booklet featuring special offers and discounts was sent to preferred customers. The catalog used 4-color offset, one hole punch and was ring bound. Award of Excellence Gill Studios Inc., Shawnee Mission, Kan., McCafe Table Decal GRAND WINNER Screen Printing Repacorp Inc., Phoenix Neil Young Diary Project Judges were impressed with Repacorp’s vinyl replication of the original leather diary Neil Young kept on the road during his career. Though the final project was award-winning, Repacorp experienced several setbacks during production. Mix-ups in materials, deadline delays and mishaps with inks made production anything but simple. But, Repacorp succeeded in satisfying the customer with this project. “This is a winner,” one judge said. “Somebody did a really nice job compiling all of this.” 14 2010 PEAK AWARDS 2010 PRINT EXCELLENCE AND KNOWLEDGE AWARDS GRAND WINNER Self Promotion, Complex Specialty Print Communications, Niles, Ill., SPC Toolkit The judges said Specialty Print Communications’ award-winning self promotion is the type of product companies hope customers display for their competition to see. Specialty Print created this sales toolkit to introduce prospective buyers to its expanded offerings. Produced in-house, the toolkits were coupled with a revamped sales letter inside a simple shipping container. More than 33% of preliminary meetings with prospective customers were attributed to the toolkit distributions. And, at least a dozen new RFQs from national end users were obtained via this promotion. “If you went through a checklist, this product would outclass all other self promotions,” one judge said. Award of Excellence FormStore Incorporated, Fenton, Mo., Digital Magazine Covers Key-Man-Ya Co. Ltd., Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Single Line Calendar Standard Register, Dayton, Ohio, Training Playbook GRAND WINNER Self Promotion, Simple LASX Industries Inc., St. Paul, Minn. Building Opportunities Promotional Brochure Judges pointed out the “fine lines and cuts” in LASX Industries’ promotional brochure for Building Opportunities. The piece was designed to promote LASX’s Contour Creations Digital Finishing division and provide information on its capabilities and services. The division offers laser cutting as an alternative to conventional die cutting, so LASX used this pattern on the Building Opportunities piece to showcase the division’s abilities. “Well done,” one judge added. Award of Excellence cmfi Group, Peoria, Ill., Holiday Card Printco Inc., Omro, Wis., 2009 Trade Show Booth Promotional Campaign GRAND WINNER Time Saver e-Quantum Inc., Reno, Nev.
