DORTE MANDRUP ARKITEKTER
As one of the most original and socially-engaged architects of her generation, Danish architect Dorte Mandrup represents the best of the Nordic architectural tradition. To the smallest
detail, Mandrup’s buildings engage with their surroundings without ever losing sight of the
individuals who will inhabit them. Mandrup’s playful relationship with form and space is
apparent in everything from her bold take on the traditional room layout to her delicate restoration of the Danish classic, Arne Jacobsen’s Munkegård School. Through an extensive
conversation with the architect, a critical essay and an illustrated presentation of her work,
this book documents the evolution of Dorte Mandrup’s groundbreaking practice, including
several exciting unrealised projects.

BUILT BY THE SEA – VILLAS AND SMALL HOUSES
LUND HAGEM ARCHITECTS
Norway’s Lund Hagem Architects is celebrated for their unique relationship with nature. For
each building, the firm deftly analyses the built and natural landscape, determining which
parts of a site should remain unbuilt, and which microclimates would best lend themselves
to domestic living. Established in 1984, the firm has staked their reputation on their unique
sensitivity to the interplay between form, material and the building’s already-existing surroundings. Impressions from the landscape and local buildings create a vocabulary they
use as their basis for creating modern architecture rooted in the Nordic tradition. This book
showcases the firm’s small buildings and cabins, in which the interplay between built and
unbuilt natural landscape achieves its maximum effect.

LEARNING FROM COPENHAGEN
Cobe Architects
Over the last decade, Copenhagen has undergone a major transformation – not just in its
appearance, but in the way the city functions and is experienced by its residents. COBE’s
projects are spread out over Copenhagen, but they aren’t cookie-cutter buildings that
are placed without meaning or context. Each structure is highly aware of what the local
markers mean in a globalised world. What unites them is the architects’ desire to achieve
a more sustainable, socially inviting urban environment for city residents. This refreshing
monograph speaks to all those who live and work in cities, with contributions ranging
from established architects and architecture critics to the those in municipal and urban
planning roles and the residents of Copenhagen themselves.

ARCHITECTURE AND FORM
Though ostensibly the works of Jonas Lindvall may fit into the Nordic tradition, his rejection
of any particular style or trend sets him apart from his contemporaries. Unlike the wider
Swedish design scene which largely revolves around Stockholm, Lindvall chooses to continue his work from Malmö, his hometown, and spans the disciplines of architecture and
furniture design. Among his most iconic designs to date are his Oak and Papa chairs for
Skandiford – simple, beautiful concepts with a nod to the Scandinavian modern style. In
addition to design and residential projects, Lindvall also takes on commercial architecture
and interior design – from offices to retail schemes – with memorable results. His interior
design for the Japanese restaurant Izakaya Koi won the Golden Chair Award in 2005. This
monograph invites readers to explore his impressive back catalogue and sneak a peek at
projects in the pipeline.

RESILIENCE THROUGH DESIGN
The theme of the third edition of the esteemed Nordic Architects series, Resilience Through
Design, can be interpreted broadly. Referring to the challenges faced by architects the
world over to create buildings and cities that are sustainable and inclusive, it is a theme
that has particular resonance in the world’s northernmost regions, where many look to find
benchmarks of innovation and problem-solving. Edited by David Sokol, each of the Nordic
region’s foremost architectural practices is presented through beautiful original imagery of
their most iconic works, as well as insightful conversations with each architectural office.

Future People’s PalaceS
Remaking the Architecture of the Welfare State
The mass housing produced during the Swedish welfare state’s “Million Programme”
(1965-1974) has been heavily debated since the Swedish society’s abrupt shift during the
oil crises of the 1970s. Future People’s Palaces provides an overview of this history and
presents architectural projects that take on the complexities of renovating those buildings
now. In part the challenges are technical, in part they are social and in large part they
concern how these projects live in the collective consciousness through their mediation.

ADVENTURES IN CONCEPTUALISM
From the editor of The New Wave in Danish Architecture comes a new book that explores
the work of architectural offices working in a strongly conceptual manner, including BIG,
MVRDV and FREE. The book highlights signature projects through interviews and essays,
examining the motivations behind Scandinavia’s most radical contemporary architecture. It
tells the story of how globalization has affected local building traditions, focusing on a group
of architects who are sensitive to the character of the regional. The architects featured
work beyond the straitjacket of the stylish to explore the possibilities of each local site and
building program.

JULIEN DE SMEDT
Beyond a typical monograph, this collection of works by Julien De Smedt Architects
offers valuable insight into a practice developed over the course of more than three
hundred projects and several dozen completed buildings, installations, and objects.
Understanding design as a form of research, the book catalogues the evolution of
ideas applied to a broad range of architectural scenarios. From early housing commissions in Copenhagen as one half of the architecture firm PLOT (co-founded in
2001 with Bjarke Ingels), to later work as JDS, the monograph traces and records
the evolution of design strategies first explored in Denmark. At once documentary and
instrumental, the book is a shot of energy that reminds designers and those that rely
on them that experimentation is necessary in order to tackle tomorrow’s problems.

Characterised by her aesthetic understanding and admirable detailing, workmanship and
expressiveness, the works of Kristin Jarmund Architects relate to functionalism but with a
reinterpretation and refinement of this idiom. Founded by Jarmund in 1985, this leading
Norwegian architectural firm strives for solutions with simplicity in form and function with
an emphasis on the human dimension. This monograph explores the rich history of one of
Norway’s finest firms, tracing back to Fyrstikkterrassen, a multipurpose commercial building
in Oslo, which put Jarmund on the map as a rising star in Norwegian architecture. Since
then, Kristin Jarmund Architects have designed a plethora of important and iconic buildings
of varying sizes and purposes, including Nydalen Metro Station, award-winning Gulskogen
School and the Norwegian Embassy in Kathmandu. In 2010, Jarmund was awarded the
prestigious Honorary Fellowship of the American Institute of Architects’ Award for her
outstanding work in architecture and society.

PETRA GIPP
This book explores, for the first time, the Nordic Classical architecture movement of the
early twentieth century, which flourished between National Romanticism and Modernism
in Scandinavia. It includes the lives and work of Gunnar Asplund, Hack Kampmann and
Alvar Aalto, among others, and covers the many outstanding and architecturally important
buildings of the period, such as the Stockholm Woodland Cemetery, the Copenhagen
Police Headquarters and the Jvvaskyla Workers Club. An overview of this important
architectural movement is a timely exploration of the architects, their buildings and the
cultural and social changes to which they were responding.

Petra Gipp has emerged as one of the most interesting and innovative Swedish architects
working today. Her work seamlessly blends architectural and sculptural expression, while
her approach is one of sensitivity to location, light and volume. This book examines the
basic elements of the art of building to deepen the understanding of architecture’s values.
In exploring the relationship between the model and the built project, texts and drawings
offer analysis and readings of elements like the passageway, niche, promenade, core and
the interior lining of a building. With a fresh approach to Nordic architecture and contributions from esteemed architecture thinkers, this book is sure to satisfy cravings for a new

In K2S – Beyond the Wall of Sound, the architecture oeuvre of renowned young Finnish
architects K2S is at last published in its entirety – from the ovoid, remarkable Kamppi
Chapel to the large-scale, complex development of the now iconic Olympic Stadium
canopy. The work of K2S is based on the conviction that good architecture touches the
human soul, and does not submit to dogmas or a signature style. To Mikko Summanen,
Kimmo Lintula and Niko Sirola, the Finnish word for roots – “juuret” – is essential. Their
design philosophy is guided by principles of materiality and its sensory aspects, the
notion of context, Finnish building traditions and a fourth, innovative dimension. Edited
by Salka Hallström Bornold and designed by Dalston Creative, the volume also includes
texts by the group’s mentors, Pritzker Prize winner Toyo Ito and esteemed architecture
thinkers Juhani Pallasmaa and Hans Ibelings.
K2S: Beyond the Wall of Sound is their first monograph.
Their oeuvre is published in its entirety. From the ovoid,
remarkable Kamppi Chapel to the large-scale, complex
development of the Olympic Stadium, the iconic building
that launched their careers when they won the competition
for the new canopy.
In this volume, the group’s mentors, Pritzker Prize winner
Toyo Ito and the esteemed architecture thinker Juhani
Pallasmaa, reflect on K2S Architects, alongside the critic
Hans Ibelings. Indeed, their particular approach is lustful,
exploratory and represents a pivotal moment for contemporary, Finnish architecture.
K2S architects
“In architecture, every song must count,” say K2S Architects.
The dynamic trio from Helsinki started as a grunge band
and went on to become key members of a new generation
of architects in Finland – the first to depart from the
modernist canon.
Today, their work is based on the conviction that good
architecture touches the human soul, and does not submit to
dogmas or a signature style. To Mikko Summanen, Kimmo
Lintula and Niko Sirola, the Finnish word for roots – “juuret” –

MUSEUM IN THE DOCK
BIG Architects
SUPERKILEN
How does one breathe new life into an abandoned dry dock? BIG architects have designed
an extraordinary museum to revive Denmark’s proud maritime history. The Danish Maritime
Museum will fit into a unique historical and spatial context between one of Denmark’s most
important buildings – the world-famous Kronborg Castle – and a new, ambitious cultural
centre. In order to preserve the dock as an open, outdoor space, BIG has placed the
museum underground, just outside the wall of a dry dock in a formerly abandoned shipyard.
In this subterranean position, the museum appears as part of the cultural environment,
while at the same time standing as an independent institution. Through this extraordinary
museum, BIG once again confirms its position as one of the world’s leading architectural
offices.

The book Superkilen celebrates the dawn of a new type of urban public space. Designed
by BIG, TOPOTEK1 and SUPERFLEX, Superkilen is a kilometre-long urban park wedged
within one of the most ethnically diverse and socially challenging neighbourhoods in Denmark. The project triggers the imagination, exploring the idea of a plural “we” and advocating for community as a collective experience of otherness. Superkilen is composed of
globally-sourced objects from 60 different countries – the 60 nationalities of the people
inhabiting the area surrounding it – ranging from exercise gear from muscle beach Los Angeles to sewage drains from Israel, palm trees from China and neon signs from Qatar and
Russia. This book invites readers behind the scenes of the making of Superkilen, through
the reflections of its creators, and discusses the project’s relationship with changes in the
conception of public space and to the increasing expectations of public investments.

earlier role in visual communication, there has been a growing movement among talented
young Danish illustrators who are working at the intersection of art and illustration. This
book presents a documentary snapshot of contemporary Danish illustration today. It is a
physical and visual collection of 36 of the most talented and prominent Danish illustrators
and their work.

SEE THE LIGHT
See the Light is an inspirational book about Nordic light and lighting design. Generous
image material makes lighting easy to understand, and even complex concepts like visual
perception become lively and engaging. This book illustrates everything from spectacular
outdoor lighting to original interior solutions, as well as comparative images that teach us
to see the difference between various lighting designs. Author Svante Pettersson, a lighting
designer highly acclaimed both in his native Sweden and internationally, writes personally
about his philosophy of lighting, addressing everyone from architects to students and DIY
enthusiasts.
See The Light
See The Light
En bok om ljusdesign
Svante Petterson
breddgrader. Skuggspel, framhävd
ytstruktur i material och en varm ton i
ljuset är ofta närvarande.

ÅKESTAM HOLST
HALL OF FEMMES
FROM ZERO TO FAME
Named Sweden’s top advertising agency ten times since 2003, Åkestam Holst is the unrivalled leader of Swedish advertising bureaus. Their many accolades confirm the agency’s
aspiration since its founding in 1998 – the desire to build strong relationships with clients
who share a belief in the power and possibilities of alternative communication. Since then,
a long list of domestic clients, big and small, have added their names to Åkestam Holst’s
roster. On the international scene, the agency has won 20 Cannes Lion awards and was
crowned the world’s fifth best digital marketing agency by Britain’s The Won Report. This
monograph tells the story of Åkestam Holst’s rise to success through their unique talent
for reinterpreting the artificial and old-fashioned division between traditional and digital
advertising.

ANTON ALVAREZ
THE THREAD WRAPPING MACHINE
Anton Alvarez has spent two years developing a machine that spins thousands of metres
of brightly coloured thread around pieces of wood and metal to join them, producing solid
benches, stools and lamps without traditional joints of any kind. The thread acts as an
joining element, allowing the raw material being wrapped to be extremely elaborate without
appearing so. Alvarez’s work has been exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum and is
represented by Libby Sellers Gallery in London. In photos, interviews and essays, this
book presents the evolution of the thread wrapping technique, with an essay by UglyCute
founder Andreas Nobel and a foreword by legendary British artist and curator Richard
Wentworth.

It’s Mine portrays 33 Swedish and international art collectors and artists who have
devoted their lives to art. In intimate interviews and at-home stories they tell what has
sparked their interest and what role art plays in their everyday lives. The narratives
presented in this richly illustrative book are about initial meetings – about desire, passion,
and acquisitiveness. And most of all, about the relationship between works of art and
their owners.

studio talks
thinking through painting
Thinking Through Painting is an on-going investigation of contemporary painting since
2009 involving numerous discussions and studio visits. The book was initiated after a
discussion between Swedish artist Jan Rydén and curator Jonatan Habib Engqvist about
how the contemporary institutional and theoretical art scene often seems to be uneasy, and
at times even lost in its relationship to painting. Together with the artists Kristina Bength
and Sigrid Sandström, they embarked on a project that would investigate painting as a
way of thinking with a group composed of a curator/philosopher and three theoretically
minded painters who all have different points of departure and dissimilar painting practices.
Taking the artist’s perspective as a point of departure, the book collects over 400 pages of
commissioned texts and transcribed conversations between artists, theorists, curators and
critics active in Stockholm, Oslo and New York.
Thinking Through Painting is an on-going
investigation of contemporary painting involving numerous discussions and studio visits over the past five years. Taking the
artist’s perspective as a point of departure, this book collects
commissioned texts and transcribed conversations between
artists, theorists, curators and critics active in Stockholm, Oslo
and New York. By exploring relationships between concept-based
language and an embodied form of thinking through material and
perception particular to painting, this book attempts to address
the discourse surrounding painting and contemporary art.

Contemporary Swedish art jewellery is a far cry from what is perceived as typically Swedish.
Today’s jewellery artists engage with and reflect on problems in society using a material
vocabulary that goes far beyond precious metals and gemstones. This book explores how
art jewellery has at last taken its rightful place in the world of contemporary art. Jewellery
historian Inger Wästberg has produced a volume that serves as a reference source for
curators, collectors and other artists. Thirty-one Swedish jewellery artists are represented
from the 1990s to today, with an introduction by Inger Wästberg and a foreword by David

MASTER AND HIS STUDENTS, 2nd EDITION
Norwegian artist Odd Nerdrum (born 1944) was a student at the Academy of Art in Oslo
when Modernism first made its delayed entry to Norway. sHe broke away from his peers who
rallied around Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and became a follower of Rembrandt
and a painter in the classical tradition. Art students from all over the world have since
sought out his teachings, and many have become internationally known in their own rights.
This book documents the influence of Odd Nerdrum, and his followers who went on to
become some of the leading artists of today’s figurative painting.

KAREN BIT VEJLE
Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway has a degree in art history and has been a practicing visual artist for many years. Her work with glass, jewellery art, photography and printmaking – as well as her collaborations with painter Ørnulf Opdahl and Kjell Nupen – are
documented in this book, which relates the fascinating history of the Queen’s artistic
development. Sales of the book benefit the Queen Sonja Print Award, which promotes the
development of paper-based art.
Danish artist Karen Bit Vejle uses her scissors as her brush when she creates her beautiful images of art on paper. The art of psaligraphy is thousands of years old, with master
artists in China and other areas of the Far East. This particular form of paper-cutting art
hit Europe with the wave of Eastern influence in the 17th century. The Danish tradition
of clipping images in paper is particularly strong in Scandinavia, and Karen Bit Vejle has
worked to master the medium since she was a young girl. The last couple of years have
seen her work grow in scope and sophistication, and she has been exhibited widely both
in her adopted home of Norway and abroad.

THAM VIDEGÅRD ARKITEKTER
Tham & Videgård Arkitekter are leaders of a new generation of Swedish architects. As Hans Ibelings notes in one of the
book’s essays, they are neither stuck in the functionalist past nor preoccupied with a conceptual image. By approaching
each assignment in a direct and uncomplicated way, they create opportunities for architectural exploration. For ten years
they have produced a singular and lucid architecture that owes as much to vernacular Nordic tradition as it does to the
international scene.

KJELLANDER + SJÖBERG
Kjellander + Sjöberg is a considerable part of the renewed Swedish architecture. During more than ten years, they have
created architecture far from the obvious that last over time after long daily use. It is architecture where housing, social
issues about how we live our lives and our need to participate in public life is central. According to Kjellander + Sjöberg,
architecture should come close. It should be practical and beautiful every day. “Kjellander + Sjöberg lets architecture
be what it should be,” says Hans Ibelings in one of the book’s essays. The book Kjellander + Sjöberg is part of Arvinius’
series of books on Nordic architects.

PUBERTY
The Munch Museum’s 1894 version of Puberty has not been shown to the public for more than ten years due its need
for conservation. This experimental painting was done by Edvard Munch on un-primed canvas, which made it increasingly

MUNCH THROUGH NEW EYES
HIS HOLY UNIVERSE
NORSKE ROM
NORGES AMBASSADE I STOCKHOLM
This book presents new research on one of the world’s greatest expressive artists. The book reveals new material about
several paintings, and draws astonishing conclusions. Through varying approaches, the book’s four authors let us see
Edvard Munch through new eyes. An important part of the book throws new light on Munch’s position toward religion and
philosophy, emphasizing the artist’s strong relation to the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. This is probably the most
unusual book ever on Munch’s life and work.

Although built sixty years ago, the Norwegian embassy in Stockholm is a striking building that still functions perfectly as
a meeting place for diplomats, people from the business and political communities with receptions, dinners and cultural
events. The building is also the residence of the residing ambassadors and their families. The house is the masterpiece of
the well known Norwegian architect Knut Knutsen, decorated with important works of art from the period between the wars,
many by Edvard Munch.

MUNCH BY OTHERS
KONGENS HUS
ALLE KONGEPARETS HJEM
Norwegian painter Edvard Munch’s (1863–1944) historical significance and continuing relevance are constantly being
reflected in today’s Norwegian and international art. Several of Munch’s iconic images have also assumed a role as collectively understood cultural metaphors. In Norway it is hardly possible to consider the term “anxiety” without referencing
The Scream. Although the artist never formed a proper ”school” around his work, he has been a direct influence to artists
spanning many genres and cultures. The most known is perhaps Andy Warhol, but this book reveals that there are many
others, including Robert Mapplethorpe, Tracey Emin, Marina Abramovic, Louise Bourgeois, Turner Prize nominated Enrico
David, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Mapplethorpe, Georg Baselitz and many, many more.

Since the King and Queen of Norway took reign in 1991, there has been a period continuously of restoration of the royal
properties in several parts of the country. The Royal Castle of Oslo needed a thorough rehabilitation after decades with no
major refurbishment since the Second World War. Ending like 20 years of restoration, all ten castles and houses, the royal
yacht and railway carriage has been documented through new photography and texts. H.M. Queen Sonja has written texts
to all the properties, probably unique in the history of European royalty.

a GUIDE FROM SOUTH TO NORTH
jan digerud
collage
“When I put together a collage, I think about architecture.” The famous Norwegian postmodernist architect Jan Digerud is
a collector of bits of paper: ”Together these bits of paper form my palette, textures and forms. The paper collages in this
book comprise a selection from my sketch books. My wish is that precedents from the beginnings of modernism are linked
to contemporary ideals, so the past and the present need not stand apart. The collages here are independent, finished
compositions. Yet even more so, they are exercises in design, inspired by time and place.”

SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN IN THE DOLL’S HOUSE
DESIGN BY NATURE INTERACTION BETWEEN NATURE
AND DESIGN/ARCHITECTURE IN NORWAY
Scandinavian Design in the Doll’s House takes the reader through the changing trends in Scandinavian interior design,
from 1950–2000. It was in Scandinavia that modernist design came to interest toy makers on a considerable scale
and this unique production of doll’s houses and doll’s house furniture in modern style is prized both by collectors and
by children at play. The book captures the Nordic way of life that has influenced interior design throughout the world.
Childlike in some ways, perversely voyeuristic in others, this book is a must for mid-century lovers and has the potential
of being a cult classic.

In spring 2011 Norwegian Snøhetta was chosen the world’s most innovative architect office by the American magazine
Fast Company. The interest for architects and designers from Norway continues to grow. Exhibition projects such as 100%
Norway have consolidated the country’s position as a design nation making great progress. In this sequel to Norway
Calling (2008) writer Staffan Bengtsson considers the Norwegian design world’s new and different relation to landscape
and nature. Today mountains and fjords are not purely magnificent visual scenery but also part of a design process that
perhaps ultimately is concerned with man’s future on the planet.

The companion book to Nordic Architects highlights the contemporary talents working in a region that is famous for
product, furniture, and industrial design. In design as in architecture, recent progress is defined by a clean aesthetic,
craftsmanship, and empathy for the human experience. But other recent movements, like the emphasis of intellectual
conceit over form making, have perhaps caught designers off guard. In informal interviews with 60 of the region’s bestknown designers, such as Peter Opsvik, Front, and Ilkka Suppanen, writer and editor David Sokol explores the once and
future Nordic identity, the exigencies of local manufacturing, and the competitive global marketplace.

winner of the Swedish Illustration Award 2011. With its in-depth collection, broad in content, the book is a must for those

NORDIC GRAPHIC DESIGNERS
Nordic Graphic Designers is the third volume in Arvinius’ series on Nordic architecture and design. The book demonstrates
the diversity among graphic designers from the five Nordic countries, but also tracks a distinctly Nordic identity shared by a
great variety of designers. The book serves as both an encyclopedia of contemporary expression and a catalogue of leading
designers, with established titans and rising stars side by side. We learn what sparks the creativity of Kari Piippo, Acne,
and Bleed. An introduction gives the reader a diagnosis of today’s Nordic graphic design. Each of the following chapters is
devoted to a single designer, beginning with a brief interview.

SWEDISH ILLUSTRATION 3
NEW GRAPHICAL SYMBOLS FOR MANY MORE
We all come into contact with symbols, when travelling, shopping or visiting libraries and hospitals. Properly designed, the
symbols are readily understandable and make life easier for us. Because pictorial symbols – graphical symbols – are so
widespread in public places, it is important, as a matter of democracy and human rights, that everyone should be able to
understand them. Graphical Symbols for Many More is a national development and standardization project aimed at making
public symbols more uniform and more serviceable in keeping with the concept of Design for All. This book contains the
competition entries, presented by category, Medical centre, Library, Travel centre, Source separation, Playground, Evacuation meeting point and Internet café. The winning entry, the nominated entries and the honorable mention are presented
in their entirety.

SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN BEYOND THE MYTH
FIFTY YEARS OF DESIGN FROM THE NORDIC COUNTRIES
Scandinavian design has become an established phenomenon, retaining its positive resonance. During the flowering of
postmodernism in the 1970s and 1980s, there was less focus on the concept, but by the early 1990s however, it had made
a comeback. Now the time has come for a serious reassessment of Scandinavian design, including all the countries in the
Nordic community that have contributed to the formation of this identity: Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
