News & Views April 2015 Volume 35 Issue 4 April 14 Danny Molloy, Addiction Prevention Coalition D anny Molloy was born and raised right outside of Boston Mass. Danny had various trials throughout his childhood which led him to make some very bad decisions which led to 20+ drug and alcohol rehabilitation and arrests. After a long recovery process, Danny went to the Foundry in Bessemer Alabama and turned his life over to God. Danny now resides in Vestavia Hills with his wife Haley Molloy and is the Program Support Specialist at the Addiction Prevention Coalition where he visits schools to warn the youth about drugs and alcohol addiction in the Birmingham and surrounding area. Luncheon Sponsor The Addiction Prevention Coalition is a local nonprofit that is focused on preventing substance abuse by fostering community collaborations, facilitating student-led, adult guided drug prevention programs and expanding access to services. The APC addresses the local trends of substance abuse, how to get involved, and how to help our students overcome the pressure of drug use. They will be partnering with Vestavia Hills High School in the fall with their prevention program. The APC recently awarded Vestavia Hills with a “Community Impact Award” highlighting the city officials and citizens joint effort in confronting the substance abuse issue. It woks in collaboration with the Vestavia Chamber, Help the Hills and local law enforcement. America’s First Federal Credit Union America’s First Federal Credit Union has more than $1.3 billion in assets and 18 branches throughout the state of Alabama. America’s First prides itself on its involvement in the community and providing benefits for local businesses. If your organization is having an event that requires sponsorship, or if you would like to learn more about how partnering with America’s First will benefit your business, please contact Jimese at (205) 320-4150 or [email protected]. Chair’s Corner D News and Views Page 2 ear Fellow Chamber Members, This spring we have the privilege of celebrating something that has become a beloved Vestavia Hills tradition – the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. Indeed, this much-anticipated event is now in its 25th year! Please join us bright and early at 7:30 a.m. on April 28th for this year’s event. It will be a special time to reflect on the blessings we enjoy as a community, and to offer up prayers for our city, state and country, and our leaders. Angie McEwen A friend of mine who’s lived in other parts of the country for a number of years once remarked to me about the uniqueness of this tradition. While many communities might not welcome such an event, ours rallies in support of it. We are blessed that Vestavia Hills is a community that pauses to recognize the rich blessings we enjoy, to reflect on those things that make our city strong, and to give thanks. Our Chamber members are certainly part of what makes our community great, and I’m fortunate to be able to see them in action every day. From our members who volunteer their time to ensure the success of our committees and special events, to our Chamber staff that works tirelessly to coordinate quality events throughout the year, to our Board members, to the citizens who support the businesses that call Vestavia Hills home – all contribute to the strength of our community. So in this time of reflection, I’m thankful for everything our Chamber does to add to the strength of our city. I look forward to joining you at the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast to give thanks for the opportunity to be a part of such a thriving community, and to ask for the guidance needed to help keep Vestavia Hills a wonderful place in which to live and work. Wishing you and your business a successful April! Angie Godwin McEwen Butler Snow LLP F News and Views Page 3 rom the President… We welcome Danny Malloy with Addiction Prevention Coalition, as our luncheon speaker at the April 14th luncheon. With the meteoric rise in drug use in our community, particularly heroin, Danny will share his journey with his own addiction and help us understand how to be vigilant and to put in safeguards in the business community. Be sure to make your reservation no later than Friday, April 10th at 4:00. Karen Odle The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28 th at 7:30 AM at Vestavia Country Club. This is always my favorite event of the year; when you top the hill going to the County Club and look out over the beautiful place we call home, it just takes your breath away! We are so very blessed to live in a community with such caring and compassionate people. IF you wish to attend, you must call the office to purchase tickets are not sold at the event. As of this writing, we have sold all of our sponsorship tables but have a few individual tickets remaining. You can order your tickets online at www.vestaviahills.org or by calling the Chamber office at (205)823.5011. Planning for the 2015 Vestavia Hills Living is underway and is on track to once again be a great publication of which our community can be proud. Each year I worry about producing a better product but somehow it seems to always be a great product and well received in the community. Don’t miss the opportunity to advertise your business in this magazine. Remember we mail it to every household in Vestavia Hills as well as print an additional 3,000 for distribution through area businesses, newcomer packets, etc. For further information regarding advertising, contact Lisa Christopher at 862-3445. The next Community Caucus is scheduled for April 21st at 5:00 pm at the Chamber office. This is a concerted effort to connect with the various clubs and organizations across the community in an effort to be better informed and connected with all of the happenings in our community. If you are part of an organized group, please either plan to attend or ask the leader of your group to plan to attend and let us know what you are working on. They may email me at [email protected] for more information. Some exciting things are in the works for this beautiful place we call home. Stay tuned for additional announcements to be made in the near future. In the meantime, please support our area businesses….they need us but we also need them to be successful more than ever as we strive together for “A Life Above”. Karen J. There are 18 branch locations throughout Alabama. America’s First was originally founded in 1936 at U.S. Steel’s Ensley Works in Birmingham to provide financial services to under-served individuals. America’s First has since grown to a full-service, one-stop financial institution with more than $1 billion dollars in assets and over 125,000 members. As a not for profit financial cooperative, our focus is on people, not profits. We operate by a “people helping people” philosophy that is hard to find at many other financial institutions. America’s First is a full-service credit union with a 5-star “superior” rating from BauerFinancial, a nationally recognized rating agency for banks and credit unions. Visit amfirst.org, any or our 14 Birmingham area branch locations, or call 205-320-4000 to learn more about how America’s First can help you reach your financial goals. Dr. Nicol Pettway-Summit Express Urgent Care L. Nicol Pettway, MD, the Chief Medical Officer at Summit Express Urgent Care, is an Alabama native and Vestavia Hills resident. She has been practicing medicine in the Birmingham area for the past 20 years. She earned a degree in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University where she was awarded a Harvard College grant. She received her Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham where she was awarded a Dean’s Scholarship. Dr. Pettway became board certified in Internal Medicine after completing a residency at the Baptist Health Systems in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1997. She has practiced emergency medicine for more than 15 years and urgent care for four years. The clinic, which opened in May of 2014, offers a complete on-site lab and digital xray services for children and adults alike. Summit Express Urgent Care has a unique distinction from the other urgent care clinics because it focuses on urgent care with Occupational Health services. The latest trend is to perform both primary care as well as urgent care. Dr. Pettway feels that during busy times such as flu season, critical health maintenance issues can “fall through the cracks”. However, people that can’t get in to see their private physicians are welcome. The clinic also has a system in place in which each visit can be faxed to their primary care physician. Therefore, local physicians can feel confident that their patients will not be “lost” to them and better patient follow up is ensured. The Summit Express Urgent Care family wishes to thank the City of Vestavia Hills and the surrounding communities for their outpouring of support and positive feedback that they have received since opening in May 2014.
