TERM 4, 2015 - WEEK 02 - 22ND OCTOBER
Speech Competition
Welcome to Week 2
What an exciting week we have had with a
number of events throughout the school.
Welcome to Nehemiah and Zachariah Foua,
and Travis and Mason Puklowski. We hope you
enjoy your time at Ashhurst School.
We were lucky enough to have had the
opportunity to listen to some quality speeches
on Tuesday night at our school speech finals.
All of the children, including our two invited
speakers from the Turanga team, did an
exceptional job speaking in front of an
appreciative audience. Great job everyone!
Thanks also to Mr Smith for his organisation
and Ms Karen Allan for coming along to judge.
It was great to get the opportunity to attend and
watch our Year 7 and 8 children compete at the
Super 8 basketball competition on Tuesday.
The children represented the school with a lot
of pride, skill and determination. Many thanks
to Mr Smith for his organisation, to Nick
Godfrey and Robyn Cooper for their coaching
and managing of the team and all parents who
assisted with transport.
Next week promises to be equally as exciting,
with Lamb and Calf Day being held on
Wednesday 28th. This is such a fabulous day
and it will be great to see the children getting
an opportunity to share their animals, arts and
crafts.
Next Friday we will be having a Black Out Day
in support of the All Blacks; children can wear
black and bring a gold coin donation. We are
quietly confident the All Blacks will make the
finals.
Have a great weekend all

Lamb & Calf Day - Wednesday 28th October
A reminder that it’s Lamb and Calf Day next week.
Students with pet lambs or calves do not need to
come to school until they bring their animals,
between 10.30 and 11.00 am. Judging will start at
11.20 and classes will be open to view displays
from 12.00 - 1.00. Postponement day is Thursday
29th; this is only for judging the animals. Arts and
crafts will still take place on Wednesday.
Black Out Day
On Friday 30th October, students can come to
school wearing black in support of the All Blacks.
Please bring a gold coin donation.
Ashhurst School Cups & Trophies
Please return all Ashhurst School cups and trophies to
school as soon as possible. We require these for
engraving before prize giving at the end of the year.
Hats and Sunscreen
From next week can you please ensure your child
brings a hat to school every day, or leaves one in their
desk for use at school this term. We have a ‘No hat,
no play’ policy in terms 4 and 1. If students are not
wearing a hat, they will be asked to play in the shade
outside Room 4. Sunscreen is available on the bought
lunch table in the office for students to use. Children
also need a water bottle. There are water fountains
around the school to refill bottles.
ASSEMBLY THIS WEEK WILL BE HOSTED BY MRS GEARY AND ROOM 5
THEY WOULD LOVE YOU TO JOIN THEM IN THE VILLAGE VALLEY CENTRE AT 2.00 PM

“Calling all old mobile phones”
It’s that time again to rummage around in your drawers and toy
boxes and bring into school any unwanted mobile phones you may
have at home.
It is estimated that each year up to three million phones become
obsolete in NZ, of those only 2% are recycled.
Phones collected help our school gain valuable rewards and the
environment benefits as well keeping our landfills free of mobile
phones and their array of hazardous toxic substances.
Please drop any unwanted mobile phones you may have in the
collection box in the reception area at school.
Grace Swanston Year 7/8 Speech Winner
I think the most powerful word in the world is
stereotyping because of how it influences the way we
view the world and everyone in it. It can hurt people....
really hurt people. We all use stereotypes all the time,
without knowing it and without even thinking we pass
them on.
So what is stereotyping? Stereotyping is an overgeneralization about a particular group of people. In
other words… whole groups of society are thought of
as if they are the same, which is ridiculous right?? As
every individual is different in some way. At this point I
thought really hard about how to give an example that
would not offend anyone... in the end I came up with
this… “all blondes are dizzy airheads” but wait I'm
blonde does that mean I'm dumb?
There are lots of different ways stereotyping
messages are spread. For example television, fairy
tales, ads, movies and many more. Let’s talk about
fairy tales for instance. I want you to think about why
the prince always save the poor, helpless princess.
Why can’t we change that around every once and
awhile because not all males are strong, brave, and
have a leadership role. The same as not all women
are weak and helpless. These messages are
everywhere you look, every corner you turn. They
become our "normal" because we don’t even notice
that these messages are there despite the fact that
they are so widespread they are practically the air we
breath.
The effect these messages have on us can be
devastating. I can give you an example, I’m sure
you're all familiar with the term, ‘you run like a girl ’.
Run like a girl, what does that even mean? Whatever
it is... I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be an insult,
right! Does that mean that it is bad to be a girl? That
girls are incompetent at physical activities... maybe
unless that 'physical activity' is vacuuming!
